Himaran and Carrûn invite you to play:

Flight from Rohan

Basic Storyline:

Heldór Hildeson was a brave knight from Rohan, who had fought on many battlefields; including Helms Deep in the War of the Ring. His career was abruptly terminated when he was framed for the murder of another knight at Edoras. Though innocent, he was found guilty of the crime and thrown into prison to await his sentence.

Heldór’s elder brother Brytta, has discovered Heldór’s innocence. Gathering around himself a small group of friends, also Rohirrim Knights, he devises a daring plan to break his younger sibling out of prison and deliver him safely to Bree from where he can attempt to hide out in the North Downs until the true killer can be brought to justice and the knight pardoned. Though they realize that taking part in this plan could very well cost them their lives, several of the brother’s friends agree to help. Only Brytta knows the exact name of the killer, but all are convinced of the accused man’s innocence.

They travel along the Old South Road through the Gap of Rohan, but are unfamiliar with the Western territories past that. Lost in the region of Eregion, they encounter a dark Ranger going by the pseudonym of Awyrgan. He offers to help them re-orient themselves and reach Bree, but refuses to get involved further in the situation, not bothering or wanting to know why the party is fleeing.

Fréa Forgoil, the murderer, had volunteered to guard Heldór and was on duty when he escaped. Too embarrassed to report it to the King personally, Fréa sets out after him with his two brothers. They track and harass the friends along the Old South Road and the two groups are set to eventually clash somewhere outside of Bree.

The Purpose of the Story is:

Free Heldór from prison and escort him out of Rohan, north along the Old South Road to Bree.

This means that we will know the story is over when:

1. The Knights and Heldór arrive at Bree and determine where Heldór is going to stay.
2. The story will not discuss the fate of Fréa or whether Heldór ever gets to return home.

Starting Locations: Edoras

Likely Destination: Bree

Timeframes:

1. This game takes place in the 4th Age during the year 1432 Shire Reckoning.

2. The story itself or plot covers about two months.

3. This game requires a time commitment of 6 - 8 weeks from the game owners and the major players.

Characters Needed:

NOTE: EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE MURDERER AND HIS BROTHERS, AND EXCLUDING AWYRGAN, NEEDS TO OWN A HORSE. (AWYRGAN WILL “OBTAIN” ONE AS NECESSARY)

1.Three Knights of Rohan (friends of the two brothers). Most likely male, but a single shield maiden might work into the story as a relative or close friend of the brothers.

2.The Forgoil Family – Three Characters:

a. Fréa Forgoil, the murderer: A knight from Rohan. He will lead the force that is searching for Heldór, knowing that until he is dead there is always a chance that the truth about the crime may come out.

Fréa slew a fellow knight during a drunken fight. He then covered up the crime by hiding the dead man in Heldór’s quarters. When the dead man was discovered, Heldór was immediately accused. The murderer should often chuckle to himself over how easily he framed the crime on Heldór.

Fréa is not altogether evil, more a man caught in a downward spiral of events and attempting to save himself in the easiest manner he can find.

b. Fréa’s first Brother: This character needs to be slightly older then Fréa

c. Fréa’s second Brother: This character needs to be slightly younger than Fréa, and just as, if not more evil. He is a small, “birdlike” man.

The three brothers will argue, fight, and generally pick on the youngest. Have fun coming up with their odd fraternal behavior.

A final character possibility is another guard of Rohan sent along with the Forgoil brothers on their quest to catch the fleeing men. However, he may have his doubts about his companions…(potential plot twist, etc. possibility)

Characters That Do Not Belong: Anything other than the ones mentioned.

The game owners will each play one major character (A Knight of Rohan and the Ranger), and any minor characters (i.e. residents of Bree) that may be necessary to complete the plot.

_____________________________________________

Himaran’s Character:

Name: Brytta Hildeson

Gender: Male

Race: Man, Rohirrim.

Age: 38 (His younger brother is 28)

Appearance: Brytta has blond hair, short for his race, and is fairly tall. Strong, quiet, and an excellent warrior he wears brown clothing with a black belt trimmed with gold, and dark leather boots. He has a slight limp in his left leg from an accidental wound he received during a training exercise, and prefers to ride rather than walk. He is often seen with a silver ring on his right hand, a gift from his mother.

Weapons: When riding, Brytta wields a long spear. He always carries a short axe on his belt, along with a knife. The Rohirrim is often seen with his short sword, his prize weapon and (as the eldest) a family heirloom.

History: Brytta had lived a happy life with his family, working on their farm as a young man, up until the fateful orc raid that changed his life completely. His parents were slain in the assault, and he escaped to Edoras. Later on with his younger brother he was among the defenders at Helms Deep. Both survived and served under the new king Eomer for several years by the time Heldór was arrested for suspected murder. Feeling responsible for his younger brother, Brytta now hopes to help him escape; even if it means sacrificing his career and life.

Carrûn’s Character:

Name: Awyrgan

Gender: Male

Race: Man, Ranger

Age: 30

Appearance: Awyrgan is of average height, shorter than many Rangers, but his overall presence makes him seem taller. He is powerfully built with jet-black hair, wears dark and weathered clothing, and his overall appearance is very forbidding. He looks much older than he is, but his eyes give away his true age. His eyes are green, but blaze red when angry and his gaze is said to bed pained, but also one of the most insightful and piercing of his time. He can move like a shadow and while he has no supernatural capabilities he has often been compared to a wraith. He has a limited ability to communicate without words. On his left index finger is a black ring with a green jewel in the center that he received from his father. He is a skilled hunter and tracker, and is deeply in touch with the nature that surrounds him in his travels.

Weapons: He carries a long sword with which he is very skilled, but often prefers to use one of his three knives. One is in his belt, another on his chest, and a third strapped to his boot. He sometimes carries a bow, and can use one when need be. He wears a black mail shirt under his cloak but seldom wears any other armor.

History: Awyrgan was born into the tribes of the Rangers of the North, the nephew of Halbarad. However, his father quarreled with his Uncle and led a small group of Rangers and their families away from the main camps. He grew up in a small nomadic tribe with little knowledge of his heritage. When his father died, he was still young but was made chieftain of the group and inherited his father’s ring. Shortly after, he returned with a companion from a hunting trip to find his village burned and all of his people, including his wife and unborn child dead. His companion killed himself in despair while Awyrgan watched. He then attempted vainly to pursue the wild men who had destroyed his home but was unable to do so.

Returning in a state of mental disarray he set about burying the dead. When he buried his wife he took the ring he had given her, heated it in the fire, and burned a scar into his face as a memory of his failure. He also gave himself the name Awyrgan, meaning “condemned one” or “strangled.” He wandered aimlessly until he was found by a group of Rangers and thus rejoined his people. He rode with his uncle on the Paths of the Dead and met Aragorn but did not give him his real name. He fought in the battle of Pellanor Fields but his only real function was to stand guard over the body of his dead uncle.

After the war he chose to leave the camps of the Rangers and live on his own, but maintained his contact with them. He found work as a guide, tracker, and occasionally a sell-sword. He is a skilled orator and will often tell stories of his travels during his stops at various Inns. He is fond of the Shire and usually remains close to it, but has traveled as far south as Umbar and even lived for a time in the wastelands of Mordor; the one land he chooses not to tell tales about. He speaks many tongues and is friends (and enemies) with many people of all races.

First Post for the Game

It was a rowdy night at the White Horse Inn. Flushed faces laughed uproariously as card games (and money) were won and lost, and rounds of drinks bought for the victors and the vanquished alike. The fire blazed and stung the eyes of those who came too close to its hearth. Outside it was quiet as the stars shone down on the still night in Rohan. A stray breeze whistled through the tall grass as if to signify that something was about to occur.

Inside three brothers sat bemoaning their misfortunes at the card tables for the night. The small birdlike member of the party turned to the one in the center, as if he was the natural leader of the group. “Fréa, we need to be going.” “Aye,” the other answered. Rising from his chair he turned and paid their fee, borrowing a few coins from the silent one of the trio, whose facial lines marked him as the eldest. As he made his way to the door Fréa was met by a stumbling, gray-haired man who fell heavily against his shoulder knocking the pair to the ground in the doorway. Fréa’s eyes blazed as he gathered himself up off the floor. “Thou art an old drunken fool! If your own eyes cannot guide you perhaps you should obtain a walking stick and use it to find your way!”

The old man looked through bleary eyes at him and shook his head. “Young one, you have much to learn…” He drawled off as Fréa’s hand rose, only to be caught by his eldest brother. “Come Fréa.” Cursing, Fréa was led outside. As the youngest of trio passed the old man, he gave him a shove that sent him out the doorway.

The three were walking somewhat unsteadily when they were hailed from behind. Rapidly approaching them was the old man, demanding an apology. He grasped Fréa’s collar, asking in loud tones if this was how they treated all of the men who had done their time in the King’s service. Fréa’s eyes turned bright red, and his memory went hazy as his fists flew into the man, pummeling him into the ground. His boots found a target and ribs cracked.

When he regained his senses his two brothers were dragging him behind a shed. He was covered in blood, his own and that of the man. “Fréa, that was incredible!” His younger brothers eyes were shining. “Fool! You’ve killed a man, you’ve killed old Folca.” his older brother snapped. Fréa found that his hands were shaking nearly uncontrollably as he rose to his feet. His fingers were dripping red. Walking over he found the old man lying in a pool of blood. He had to act. He had to act fast. “Help me.” He ordered his brothers. Neither of them moved. “Help me!” Slowly they followed him and helped him sling the old man over Fréa’s shoulders.

They passed stealthily through the rest of the town following their leader until he arrived at their destination. “This is the hut of the scoundrel that cost me a month’s wages tonight,” Fréa explained. Pushing the door open quietly, they filed in, the youngest holding a lit candle. They placed the old man so that he would appear hidden, but could easily be found with a little effort. Cleaning up their tracks they exited. Fréa suddenly felt calm, as if a great weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He allowed himself a soft laugh. “This may even work to our advantage.” Behind him his younger brother gave a cackle but the oldest wore a mask of grim defeat. Fréa turned. “Come, I believe father still has a few old bottles of last year’s brew left. Let us celebrate our card victory.”

And as the trio walked off towards their distant home the moon shone red on a young Rohirrim saying goodnight to the barmaids before he left for the evening.

^*^*^*^*^

“May I see him now, sir?”

“Yes, but remember; he may be your brother, but he is a criminal and a murderer. Do not think that he will be at all pleased to see you. He knows his fate; the penalty for murdering a former servant of the king is death.”

Pushing the guard’s words aside, as well as the man himself, Brytta Hildeson strode into the dungeon where his brother Heldór was being kept. As he sat down on a block outside the cell, his brother looked up and gave him a faint smile, attempting to throw some levity into his dire predicament. “Glad to see you, brother. What is life like outside this box that I’m living in?”

“Keep your voice down. It will be far better once you’re out of here.”

“What do you mean by that, Brytta? I’ll be out of this cell soon enough, but not by your hands.”

“Listen, Heldór. I can’t explain right now, but I know who murdered old Folca, and it certainly was not you. Several of my friends and I are going to break you out tomorrow. I’m not going to let you be executed just because of the cowardice of a lone man and his wretched siblings.”

“It sounds lovely, but where shall I go? If I am caught…”

“We’re going north. I have a plan to help us get you safely out of Rohan, and from there we will follow the Old South road to a small town called Bree. I can find you a place to stay there. Hopefully, I can prove who the true murderer was, and have you pardoned.”

Reaching through the bars, Heldór clasped his brother’s hand in a tight grip. “Thank you Brytta, thank you for everything you’ve done to help me; before and now.”

^*^*^*^*^

That night, Brytta ran along a path toward the White Horse Inn, stumbling over rocks and rotting logs in his haste. In his cloak the Knight carried a crude map of the prison area, complete with the markings of an escape route he had created.

Finally reaching his destination, Brytta hurried inside and found a booth in the back of the Inn, a virtually deserted area. Retrieving the map, he looked over it one last time while he waited for the others to arrive.

FIRST POSTS BY GAME MEMBERS:

The game will begin with Brytta stealing a map of the prison level and arriving at an assigned meeting area. Therefore, first posts by Knights of Rohan need to include a brief journey to the meeting site (a table in the back of the White Horse Inn), from wherever you were, and your arrival at the site.

DETAILS FOR MURDERER’S FIRST POST:

You are the one guarding Heldor inside the prison. Your first post needs to be some form of harassing Heldor while guarding him, but be inventive. Perhaps make jokes about his predicament and probable execution, or eat the food that you were supposed to give him. Be mean, as mean as possible without physically harming him.

We will not be requiring Fréa's Two Brothers to write a first post. They will not come in until later in the game, once Heldor has escaped and Frea asks for your help to track him down.

Amanaduial the Archer

Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – YES
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Which one? Both

Name: Archim Forgoil (said Ar-kim)- the younger brother

Age: 28 (a few years younger than Fréa, I’m not sure how much. Obviously therefore flexible on this point

Gender: Male

Race: Man, Rohirrim

Appearance: Archim is quite small, only about 5 ft 5, and quite wiry. His hair is surprisingly dark for one of the Rohirrim, and always seems to be greasy, and he has a habit of fiddling with one lock just behind his ear when nervous. His hair is in a middle parting, and is rather uneven, cut quite short. His dark brown eyes are quite narrow and have a tendency to dart around, and he has quite a sharp nose. These two things, along with his slim face and wiry build often put people in mind of a bird- not like a dove, more like a small scrawny crow. Wears darker clothing often, and very little jewellery- certainly any fine jewellery would have been taken by his brothers already. Just wears a thin gold chain which he took from an unconscious customer in a bar after a brawl and which he has managed to keep hidden from his brothers. Left handed.

Weapons: Two small daggers, which he is very handy with, one worn on his left side on his belt, in view, the other concealed under his cloak in his belt behind his back, out of sight- can be quite useful when people think they can rob the little, bird like man. His brothers know of it though- he cannot use it against them, for if they attempt to hit him, they are always careful to keep his left hand in sight. Also carries a short sword, which he is adequate with. He is better with his daggers, as they have the element of surprise because they are so small, because there are two of them, and because most opponents generally watch his right hand.

Archim and his brothers spend a lot of time arguing and fighting, and the other two generally pick on Archim. He tends to treat Fréa as the leader, because he is so decisive and stubborn, and because his quick temperedness means that it is best to stay on the right side of him. Archim is constantly trying to impress his brothers, to prove that he is as good as them, and backs Fréa on everything. His brothers have a tendency to call him ‘crow’, something which irritates him no end, but he doesn’t usually retaliate. Has quite quick mind, and is generally a few steps ahead of his opponent in a fight or argument, but is also rather pessimistic. He envies and dislikes Brytta and has done for years- when young, Brytta wouldn’t play with or hang around with ‘Crow’, and Archim became convinced that the other was spreading rumours about him and turning others against him. As time went by, Brytta far was better than Archim at sword fighting, and was tall and strong especially beside scrawny Archim, and on the night that the old man was murdered, he caught Archim cheating in a card game (a usual occurrence- cheating that is, not getting caught), losing him a fair sum of money. That is why it made it all the sweeter that it was Brytta’s own brother who was framed for the murder.

Despite his wiry frame and not being an excellent swordsman, Archim is a very skilled horseman, and owns a black horse who a travelling ranger, scorning Archim, named Korkoroch (Crow-horse) and the name seems to have stuck.

I am in: Corsairs and Corsets and Hunt for the Dragon, but the last one mentioned is ending today.. Those are my first two.

I haven't posted in The Green Dragon nor the White Horse Inn..

Name: Liol

Age: 31

Gender: Female

Race: Shield maiden of Rohan

Weapons: Liol didn't use to carry weapons a child. But soon she learned that a weapon might come in need. Her father bought her a sword. It's long and thin. The blade is silver and it's very sharp. Liol aslo consideres her horse Lannra, as a weapon, because it's willing to take her anywhere she might ask.

Appearence: Liol is not very pretty. She has brown eyes, her face is small and very thin. And when that big hair of hers grows even bigger, she looks like a mouse. Her body is thin and slender. She is not very tall either. People can therefore, misgudge her and think she is the worst warrior ever, that she will show you, is not true.

Personality/Strenghts/Weaknesses: Liol has a very strong will. She is not letting any obstacles make her turn away, when she has started something she consideres as important. Quick thinking and loyal are also two words you can use to describe her. She is very bad tempered and her tounge is as sharp as any blade. Her greatest strenght is though, her sword skills. And the fact, that people misgudge her is helping a lot. (The enemy not knowing how good sheis.) Liol's greatest weakness is perhaps her social life. She is not a very outgoing person. She doesn't like to have conversations with others, than her family. Only family members are her friends and only them will reach in to her mind.

History: Liol has no a lot of history, since she is only in her early 30's.
Liol grew up in Rohan, and she loves it there. As a warrior for Rohan she has been taking part in many perilious adventures. In The War of The Ring she missed out. She was sick, and everyone thought she would die. Yet again, was it her strong will who saved her.

_____________________________________________

Novnarwen's post

"What? Is it true?" Liol's voice was both alarming and desperate. She just couldn't believe it. The lady stood talking to herself. A note had just been left at her residence by her cousin Brytta. How can it be? she thought. In the little note, Brytta had left for her, was about Brytta's brother. "You have to come, we are saving him from the prison," she read out quite loud. She felt the rage inside her grow, and Liol discovered that she was growing quite red. She looked at the note, and knew exactly what to do. She had to go, follow Brytta and save Heldór. This situation was caused by a false accusation and Liol felt she had to get a grip on this whole thing. Liol wasn't going to sleep properly before she had her cousins safe and sound, not in a prison, just anywhere else.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About thirty minutes later she was on her horse, riding very fast. "How could this possably happen?" Liol couldn't think about that now, anyhow. She had better not wasting time on finding an answer now, she had to wait, until she met Brytta Liol concluded and rode on.
Brytta had sent word for her, she had to wait and see, and then they both could figure out what to do, that was all she knew for now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The White Horse was seated right by the road, taking every traveller in, as it was a good Inn for resting. Liol jumped off her horse, and walked for the door. Inside it was quite dark. Only a few lamps in the roof, which gave a little idea where the tables, chairs and the fireplace was. Liol stepped forwards and met an old man standing behind the desk.

"I am looking for Brytta," she said in a low voice. Liol wasn't comfortable talking with strangers. An old man was the last on her 'want-to-talk-too' list. He looked at her, and laughed.

"What is a young lady, like yourself, here, at an Inn?"

How dared he, of all, say she wasn't welcome here? I have got to punch that man, she thought with herself. The old man stirred at her, actually expecting an answer, Liol thought. For a few moments she just stood there glaring at him. Are all Inn keepers like that, she thought. Liol remembered back, when she had visited another Inn, and she was actually kicked out. Liol shuddered. Well I am not going to be kicked out tis time, she thought by herself. I am a decent woman. Liol searched for an answer, while the Inn-keeper grew more and more imaptient.

"I want to talk to Brytta, not you," she said in kind of a harsh voice. The Inn-keeper didn't believe his ears, but could nothing else then to point at a table in the eastern corner. "There," he mutterd. She nodded and turned on her heels. The Inn-keepee gazed at her while walking to the pointed table with his mouth pen.

"Brytta," she cried at the man, sitting quite uneasy on a chair. He jumped up and greeted her.

"I got your note," Liol said, and the man gave a nod.

Fréa’s first Brother

Character Description Form:

Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – well, I'm finished with The Hunt of the Dragon the 10th of July, and I'm also doing Corsairs and Corsets.

How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in? This would be my third, but since the Hunt of the dragon is finished tomorrow, I guess we count that as two....

Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES
Which one? The Green Dragon Inn (did it today actually)

For your character please include:

NAME: Graitwa Forgoil

AGE: 47

RACE: Man

GENDER: Male

WEAPONS: He is kind of flexible when it comes to weapons. He can use knives, swords and isn't really bad with bow either. As his little brother he always carries his knives in a belt. When he doesn't wear the belt he has his sword with him, he thinks it could come in handy.

APPEARANCE: Graitwa is a very large man, his shoulders are wide and he is considered to be quite tall. His musache and hair are dark indeed and he has a very frightening face, espcially in the drak. He has big dark eyes and huge eyebrows, which are easy to notice.

PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: He is a very silent person. It is almost like you wonder if he could talk sometimes. He is not very social and doesn't trust people easily. He loves to pick on his youngest brother, and doesn't think he takes harm of it. Therefore you could say he is very unthoughful. His strenghts are many; because of the large man he is he gets benefits that a small man wouldn't have. He is good with weapons and a talented horseman. He doesn't think he has weaknesses, but other people would consider that as one.

He has a black fine horse that he rides. It's called Drakwing. The name has no paticular meaning.

History: He as the oldest one of the brothers doesn't remeber his parents. He ran of when he was quite young. After he'd ran of he hs been traveling around in the wilderness. He came back to his home in later days and gained friends with his brothers. He consider them as his only family.

Novnarwen, could you edit your post to explain in a little more detail how Liol knows Heldór and Brytta?

Also, it's more likely that Brytta would have simply left a note at her residence than sent a messenger; based on the secret nature of their business.

Other than that, looking good.

Edit: If you went ahead and put your first post in the thread don't worry about sending it in a PM, we can be flexible, regardless of what some might tell you Himaran is actually a pretty nice laid back guy. smilies/biggrin.gif

Aman, I'd say yes, but because it's a co-owned RPG I have to wait for Himaran's $0.02 as well. That goes for all characters.

NOTE TO ALL: Most likely, if you sign up for a character you'll probably get it but to give more people a chance we are going to hold off on final decisions until we have almost all the character slots filled. (If that's a no-no as far as the moderators are concerned I'll remove my post and insert foot into mouth. I have a self-confessed flaw of being a perfectionist so I apologize in advance).

Carrun,

That's perfectly fine. You and Himaran are the game founders so you can set the requirements for joining as long as all people are treated equally.

Good luck with the new game. I read the proposal and thought it was good. Your revised version is even better!

When it says that one can only be involved in 3 RPGs at one time, does that include Rohan and Gondor or just the Shire? Does it also include the RPG one owns?

For example: If someone owned one RPG was participating in two in the Shire and one in Rohan could she still participate in this fabulous RPG that Himaran and Carrun have started? smilies/biggrin.gif

Probably not but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Hmmm. sounds like an interesting story. I may submit a profile for "A final character possibility..." He is a former Dúnedain Ranger whose mother was from Rohan, and he was there at the White Horse and could ride "along with the Forgoil brothers on their quest to catch the fleeing men. However, he may have his doubts about his companions…(potential plot twist, etc. possibility)

Anyway, I put it out there for your consideration. I'll PM a first post to Himaran and Carrûn.
(It would be necessary that Hanasían and Awyrgan would have known each other as Hanasían was 29 at the time of the War.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
I would IM Himaran, but he hasn't posted yet so I can use the little icon.
Here is what I submit:
Character for your approval for this part: A final character possibility is another guard of Rohan sent along with the Forgoil brothers on their quest to catch the fleeing men. However, he may have his doubts about his companions…(potential plot twist, etc. possibility) in the RP Flight from Rohan.
NAME: Hanasían
AGE: 42
RACE: Man (Dúnedain/Rohirrim)
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS: Sword, bow, knife
APPEARANCE: 6 feet and about 200 lbs, muscular, sandy long brown hair, and wears black leather breeches, boots, and vest with bare arms for mobility.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Hanasían is rather quiet, but says what he means when he does speak. He handles a horse well, and is an excellent bowman from a mount as well as standing. He could move with great stealth for a man and was hardened by what he had seen and done during the war.
HISTORY: Born somewhere near Lake Evendim in the year TA 2990 (1390 Shire Reckoning) He was the second of three children of Halasían, Ranger of the North, and Lady Forcwyn of Rohan. His brother was much older than he, and he would not meet him until the battle of the Corsairs in the War of the Ring, and he would only see his younger sister on occasion, for he started to ride with the Rangers at a fairly young age and the times were ever darkening. He learned much skill from the Rangers, many o f the elder ones knew his father, and he also learned the arts of the bow and movement from Helladin, an elf friend from Rivendell. These skills made him pretty good at covert ops before, during, and after the war and unlike his father, he was relativly good hearted. Having rode with the Grey Company in the war, and having assisted Rohan during the battles of the Isen before meeting up once again with Halbarad and the Rangers riding south, he came to know his mother's people, and was glad when they again came to live in Rohan. it was during one of these times he was visiting his sister that he came to be at the White Horse Inn catching up with some veterans of Rohan...
Edit: I will have to bow out of this RP and withdraw my character from consideration as my time allocation to RPs is limited and I wish to concentrate on the one I'm in (Corsairs & Corsets). I thank Carrun and Himaran for their consideration of my character for the part applied for. I will keep an eye on the read of this fine story, and will say my part in this RP was limited to be one of the many drinking at the Inn.
Sincerely,
He is friendly to those he knows but he shuns outsiders. He is very loyal to the King of Rohan. He isn’t the most social nor outgoing. He is quick thinking as well as quick-tempered. He also thinks almost anything is funny.
HISTORY: Rochil was born in Rohan. He became a soldier of Rohan at age 20. He took place in the events during the War of the Ring such as the battle at Helm’s Deep and the Battle of Pelennor Fields which he miraculously survived both with little injury. His younger brother however was slain in the battle at Helm’s Deep. He had served under King Theoden and now King Eomer.
With the ever-growing darkness in the south, Rochil’s parents and older brother decided they were going to move north to Bree. Rochil and his younger brother would not move to Bree and leave the land they loved where they had both become soldier. He now lives in Edoras alone. It was here where he met Brytta Hildeson and his family. They became friends.
When Heldór was accused of murder Rochil knew that Brytta felt responsible for him. That’s why Rochil accepted Brytta's summons. No matter what happens, because he is not only loyal to his King and his home but to his friends.
Also he ahs a horse named Rowan smilies/tongue.gif smilies/biggrin.gif
Here my first post:
Rochil sat down to read the note left at his door. It was from Brytta. Rochil reread the letter. Heldór accused for murder! He would never do such a thing. Rochil read on. Meet me at the White Horse Inn . Brytta needed his help and Rochil new he had to go. Rochil got ready and ran outside to get his horse Rowan ready. He patted his chestnut horse, and he rode of towards the White Horse Inn.
Rochil hoped of his horse and let him graze.
“Well here I am” Rochil said not caring who heard. He entered the inn. It was filled with many people. Rochil squeezed around people until he reached the desk. Behind it sat the old innkeeper. Not the politest fellow.
“I need to speak with Brytta. Has he arrived?” Rochil asked in a demanding voice.
“Brytta sure seems to be popular,” He laughed “Probably because his brothers in jail.” Rochil was confused and not in the least bit amused.
“I do not care to be educated about his popularity. Now show me where he is!” Rochil ordered. The innkeeper stopped laughing.
“Over there” he said pointing to a table where Brytta sat. He wasn’t alone.
“Brytta” Rochil said as he neared the table. “I got your message. I’m sorry bout your brother, I know he would never do such a thing.” Rochil sat down.
NAME: Aldwulf Wilfridson
AGE: 28
RACE: Man of the Mark (one of the three Knights)
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS:
Short sword, Spear, long-knife; iron helm; plain metal buckler (small round shield)
APPEARANCE:
Height – 5’ 9” (1.75 M); 155 lbs (70 kg). Brown eyes; dark blond hair, shoulder length; clean shaven except for a thick, light brown mustache whose ends extend just beyond his lower lip. Medium frame, muscular; tanned from working outdoors; hands are calloused and rough from working with the family horses; bears a small puckered scar across his left cheek from an Orc blade at the Battle of the Hornburg. Dark brown homespun breeches secured by a plain brown leather belt with plain brass buckle; natural off-white tunic; scuffed, brown leather, knee high boots with riding heel; brown flecked with black and grey hooded cloak; tan, work stained riding gloves; no jewelry.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
A cautious young man who keeps his thoughts to himself unless asked for his opinion. Not easily swayed by the crowd, he prefers to gather facts and think about how he will respond to a situation. He is devoted to his small group of boyhood friends, and next to the company of his horses, he prefers to spend his time with them. Slow to anger, but once aroused, is single-minded and capable of great cunning in his pursuit of retribution. This is also a weakness in that his natural inclinations shift away from his own safety needs as his focus narrows.
HISTORY:
Fifth child in a family of six children. Mother and Father still living now on the horse farm managed by him and his three brothers; the two older, of whom, have wives and families. His two sisters are married and live near. Aldwulf is several times over an Uncle, and much to the despair of his parents, has no interest in wedding someone and starting a family of his own. They are aghast that his youngest brother is of the same mind, and wish that Aldwulf would set the good example for him.
He was fifteen years old when he fought in the Battle of the Hornburg, side by side with his childhood friend, Heldor. It was he, in fact, who diverted the Orc’s blade enough that it only cut Aldulf’s cheek, and did not kill him. There is nothing he would not do to see to the safety of his boon companion.
Aldwulf still serves in the ranks of the Riders of the Mark when called upon and is committed to his King, Éomer. His family is one of the ones who supply the horses needed for the knights of the Riddermark.
Envinyatar’s post
‘Osric! Lend me a hand here, man! I can’t lift these wheels myself.”
The bright midmorning sun blazed down on the square before the smithy, throwing the shadow of the straining man into stark relief against the packed earth. Aldwulf wiped his forearm along his brow and looked up, frowning, for the whereabouts of his younger brother. He was nowhere to be seen, and Aldwulf grew increasingly irritated at being left to wrestle the huge oak wheels himself. Shirt off to catch what breeze he could, sweat glistened on the straining muscles of his arms as he fought to pull the cumbersome wheel from the flat wagon’s bed and stand it on its rim to be rolled into the smithy.
They had come to the outskirts of Edoras, the city proper, to have the great wheels of the hay wagon rebanded by the blacksmith. As was usual, Osric had seen a group of his acquaintances and gone running off to see them, promising his older brother he would only be a moment. Moments stretched into quarters and halves of the hour, and still no sign of him. Aldwulf commandeered the smithy’s boy to give what help he could and together they got the two wheels into the blacksmith’s shop.
It was late afternoon by the time the smith had finished and the wheels were secured in the wagon for the trip home, an hour’s ride south along the Snowbourn River . . . and still no sign of Osric. Aldwulf sat on the bench in the shade of the spreading elm, calming himself with a pipe full of Westmansweed and a pint of local ale brought out by the smithy’s daughter.
A fair one, that one is! he could hear his mother saying, and her father’s only child. She’ll bring a large endowment into the marriage she makes. And the forge along with her when the smith looks to hanging up his hammer! he could hear his father chime in. He ran his pipe-stem along his bottom lip, watching her as she smiled at him, then hurried away. Pretty enough, he thought to himself, idly, wondering how she would fare away from the city, on their farm.
His thoughts were cut off with the hurried arrival of his prodigal sibling. Words of remonstrance were on Aldwulf’s lips until he noted the paleness of his brother’s face and his wide eyes. ‘Sit down,’ he said to the out of breath Osric, pulling the younger man down beside him. ‘Tell me what’s gotten you so upset.’
Over the next few moments, Osric delivered the news he had learned from Brytta just previous to his returning to Aldwulf and the wagon. A murder had been committed – old Folca had been killed, and Heldór stood accused of it. He had been arrested by the city guard and thrown into the dungeon to await execution.
Aldwulf’s face was grim as he listened to the news of his friend. ‘This cannot be!’ he said in a low voice. ‘Heldór is no craven to have murdered an unarmed old man, and one who had spent time in the service of the King.’
‘Brytta shares your faith in his brother, Aldwulf.’ Osric looked about for any unwelcome listeners. ‘He has asked me to tell you he would like to meet with you tonight . . . to discuss the situation. The White Horse – he said you would know the table.’
Aldwulf rubbed his chin, thinking quickly. He bade his brother take the wagon back to the farm. ‘Tell them nothing of what you have just told me, Osric. Just say that I met some old friends, with much new to catch up on. Tell them I will return soon, and not to worry.’ He clapped his brother on the shoulder. ‘Make it convincing.’
He saw his brother off, and sat for a long time, thinking, on the bench beneath the elm. When the sun had set, he stood and tapped his cold pipe out against the trunk of the tree. Placing it in the pouch that hung from his belt, he drew his cloak on and made his way quickly to the Inn.
There in the dark, back corner sat Brytta, his hands cupping a pint of ale – gazing into it as if to discern the course of events he was about to set in motion. Aldwulf advanced toward the table, and catching Brytta’s eye, nodded briefly to him.
‘I’m here,’ he said in a low voice, leaning across the table as he sat down. ‘Heldór – what are we to do for him . . .?’
Snowdog, check your Private Messages.
Earwen, your first post should be about receiving Brytta's summons and making your way to the Inn to discuss escape plans.
All - You will all probably receive at least one response from me regarding things that might need to be changed/improved in your character descriptions/posts. I can't help it, my mom studied English for 9 years in college and her nitpicking wore off onto me. Just ask Himaran. Just remember it will make the game run smoother if everyone is on the same track.
It would help me immensely if everyone would simply put their first posts beneath their Character descriptions.
That way, when it comes time to open the game, all you need do is give me a list by writer's name of what order you want the initial posts in, and I will place them as I open the game.
EVERYONE
If you find an 'edit' by me on your post - I'm just putting it in an easy format for me to transfer to the RPG Thread itself.
Himaran, Carrun,
I am terribly sorry to say my mother is being rather difficult at this stage. To cut this story short, she has told me I can't go on the computer at all during the week- not on any weekday for the next 3 months.
I know it isn't reasonable therefore to hold my place in your RPG. It would mean only being able to post on Saturday and Sunday, days which I am usually quite busy anyway. As this is, I am therefore very sorry to say I won't be able to play. Damned shame, as I was looking forward to this- I have very few downs RPs going at the moment.
I wish you every sucess with this RPG, and others in the future, and I'm sure this one certainly will suceed- it looks to be a good show.
Yours, apologetically,
The former Archim Forgoil,
Thus, the remaining available spot if someone else wants to play is the additional Rohirrim that Snowdog was going to play.
NAME: Hama (named for the doorkeeper who was a cousin of his mother's)
AGE: 23
RACE: Rohirrim
GENDER: male
WEAPONS: a sword, a shield, and a pair of longknives that can be used in either hand-to-hand combat or thrown
APPEARANCE: Fairly tall, with sandy brown hair, about 180 pounds, somewhat fine-featured
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: He hasn't been in the guard for very long so he is a little nervous. He feels that he has to prove himself to the other Riders of the Mark. His skills seem to him to be only mediocre, esp. when compared to the heroes of Helm's Deep and those who followed Theoden to Gondor. He has a fairly bad temper, and is apt to fly off the handle when anyone but himself slights his abilities. He is very patriotic and has a very strict honor code, even a little stricter maybe than others.
HISTORY: Hama was too young at Helm's Deep to be one of the young men who were given arms even though they didn't have much training. His brother was, however, and died in that battle. Hama feels that if he'd been given a sword, his brother wouldn't have died. That's why he joined the Riders of the Mark; he wanted to protect Rohan from having that ever happen again. He began learning from the veterans of the WotR almost as soon as they returned from it and has studied the necessary skills nonstop since.
Hey, Himaran. Remember me from Erebor? Here's my proposed profile and first post for the murderer. Are they alright?
BTW, anyone know how they execute people in Rohan? If the scaffolding's no good, let me know what you prefer.
I've given Fréa an extra motive for pinning things on Heldór that has to do with his ambitions. Hope this is OK.
For your character please include:
NAME: Fréa Forgoil, the murderer
AGE: 35
GENDER: Male
RACE: Man, Rohirrim
WEAPONS:
He routinely carries a misericord, a narrow dagger used to deliver instantaneous death to an opponent already felled on the field of battle. On his right hip he bears a sidearm, a short utilitarian sword employed as a back-up when he finds himself in a jam. His chief weapon, however, is a heavy two-handed broadsword, a blade of considerable workmanship passed down in the Forgoil family from one generation to the next. Since his older brother Graitwa ran off when still young and only reappeared in the family sporadically, Fréa was regarded as the favored son, inheriting the fine sword once belonging to his ancestors. This mark of distinction, as well as the favoritism that underlies it, remains a constant source of friction between Fréa and his elder brother.
APPEARANCE:
Fréa is the most naturally distinguished of the siblings. Tall and muscular, he has reddish-brown hair that he wears pulled back and tied with a leather thong. His moustaches are long and wavy, his beard trimmed short and neat. Fréa takes great pains with his attire and appearance to impress those about him, especially his peers and superiors in the guards. His features are attractive in a rugged, masculine fashion. He has had more than his fair share of female admirers, young ladies of Gondor and Rohan won over by his handsome features and superficially winning ways who would willingly have importuned their families to set up a match. However, he has chosen to keep himself free until now, since he does not want anything to come between him and his chosen goal of attaining a position of authority within the King’s guards. Only when he has achieved this, will he pick a bride of suitable lineage and wealth who will carry him one step higher on the social ladder he hopes to climb.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES:
Much of the time, Fréa is careful to hide his ambition and short temper to anyone outside his family. However, he occasionally loses control and the results can be devastating. This is particularly true after he’s downed one too many drinks. He is not instinctively cruel, but can be so when it serves his purpose.
He does have a number of good traits. He is physically brave and adept with the sword. Unlike most of those he serves with, he fights with his head as well as his strong arm. He has an eye for tactics and understands the kind of influences and situations that motivate men. Unfortunately, he’s very cognizant of the fact that he has superior intelligence and tends to look down his nose at those whom he considers less generously endowed.
Despite his constant quarrels with his brothers, he has genuine affection for them, and sees himself as their protector. This is particularly true of his younger brother Archim. In some ways, it is his affection for his brothers which is the one thing protecting him against the corrupting influence of his overweening ambition. If he ever loses that sense of family loyalty, he will truly have lost the last remnant of his humanity and turned himself over to the service of the shadow.
HISTORY:
As has already been indicated, Fréa is not innately evil. But, over the years, his worldly ambitions have grown. He is frustrated that he is already thirty-five, yet is still struggling to rise above the rank of the common soldier. He is consumed by the desire to distinguish himself in the eyes of the world, to gain a position where he can control others and show that his brains and talents are superior to theirs. Passed over for promotion several times because of his explosive temper, he now resolves to let no one come between him and his intended goal.
Although he has kept it secret from his brothers, his choice of Haldor as a victim was not accidental or mere chance anger about gambling debts. Earlier that day, he had caught a glimpse of a list of recommended promotions for positions of command. At the top of the list stood Haldór’s name; his own appeared on the next line down in case Haldór should decline. While his slaying of Folca was not premeditated, his subsequent resolve to use the situation to his own advantage was more than coincidental. His fondest hope is that his rival Haldór will meet his death at the hands of the King’s authorities, but he will clearly step in to slay the man if he feels that his own self interest demands it.
FIRST POST:
Fréa stepped quietly into the cell and closed the door behind him. It was late in the evening; all the others on duty had already left except for old Balthor who was guarding the outside doors to the prison. Fréa could do or say anything he pleased to Haldór and there was no one to witness his actions or object.
Earlier that evening, he had seen Brytta stride into the cell block and talk privately with the prisoner. The two men had put their heads together in a conspiratorial fashion so that it was impossible for Fréa to hear what they were saying no matter how hard he strained. When he saw Brytta leaving the holding area, he’d gone up to the man and told him with a straight face and feigned sympathy in his voice that there was little help for his brother, and it was best if the family reconciled themselves to that reality and prepared for the worst. Brytta had not responded verbally, but had shot a vicious glance towards Fréa and clenched his fists quietly by his side.
As Fréa stepped inside carrying a torch to light the darkened cell, he glanced over towards the prisoner. “Not much longer,” he gazed steadily at Haldór. “I’ve been at these executions before. Usually, they come in the morning just before dawn to lead you out to execution. They place shackles on your legs, bind your arms, and blindfold you. Then, as you’re led down to the place where the scaffolding’s set up, the crowd will jeer and let you know how they feel about someone who murders an officer of the king. Such a pity you lost your temper and bludgeoned that poor man.”
Fréa acted as if he was about to turn aside and leave, then pivoted around at the last minute and spoke. His words did not hold a grain of truth, but then the prisoner had no way to know that. “By the way, there was something I needed to make sure and tell you. Oh, yes, I was with the commander today, and he mentioned that your brother Brytta was suspected of helping you hide the body. You know, the one who’s crippled. Someone denounced him, I believe. They’ll be charges prepared against him as well. Such a pity to see an entire family struck down. But then I guess you won’t need to worry about that since you won’t be here to visit him in prison.”
Fréa walked over to the shoddy, beaten mattress where Haldór was to sleep; the knight had taken off the chain he always wore round his neck and set it down nearby on the floor. The piece was a heavy silver chain of ornate workmanship with the insignia of the Hildeson family outlined on a golden crest. Woven in and about the frame of the crest were strands of silver hair, obviously from an older woman. Fréa reached down and fingered the piece of jewelry roughly, then picked it up and spoke with contempt, “What’s this? A family heirloom? And with your deceased mother’s lock of hair interwoven? Old Hilde of the famous Hildeson’s, the one who lost her life as Orcbait.”
Fréa lifted up the necklace and pulled out the misericord at his side, using its tip to strip out the strands of silver hair one-by-one. Then he held up the treasured locks near the flickering flame and watched as the fire totally consumed them. He halted for a moment to look over at Haldór and then pushed the jewelry deep inside his pocket. “We’ve got rules here. Prisoners aren’t allowed such trifles. This is mine by right. I don’t expect that you or your brother will need this back. See you in the morning.” Then he turned and left the cell.
Once you are satisfied with your character list – please place a list here on the Discusssion Thread telling me the order, by writer’s name please, for the First Posts of the 3 Knights of Rohan and for the Murderer. I will place them on the Game and then leave it open for you to play.
Tinuviel of Denton:
No, you do not need a first post.
Dain Ironfoor: Great to be RPGing with you again! Excellent character description and first post; you captured the exact personality I wanted Frea to have.
All possible players: Carrun and I will look over your descriptions today and mainly tomorrow. Expect results up Monday evening.
Ok, we are just about ready to get started. Everyone who had submitted a character is invited to play, if you've changed your mind please let either Himaran or myself know immediately.
for Pio - Order of First Posts
1. First Game Post (Himaran)
2. Evinyatar
3. Novnarwen
4. elf maiden Earwen
5. Dain Ironfoot
Pio, ideally I would ask that the game thread be opened up sometime early tomorrow afternoon (EST) if possible as I will be at work & Himaran at practice until then.
--------------------------------------------
Several of you are ready to run with the ball all by yourself which is great as it will make our job easier & the game better. Some of you will most likely be recieving some PM's from Himaran and myself throughout the game to give you some tips and hints on how we see the character being portrayed & to make sure everyone stays on the same page.
If you have any questions at any point during the game, don't hesitate to PM either Himaran or myself, one of us is usually lurking on the forums somewhere.
Carrun, Himaran,
Great! Can hardly wait.
Hey, I have a question. Do you want Frea to leave the jail and come back in the morning to find the cell open and empty? Or do you want Frea to stay there guarding the "murderer", then try and stop the rescue but get knocked unconscious?
It looks as if we'll need a lot of coordination between the two bands. Kind of like a cat and mouse game where the bad guys come within a whisker of success.
One more question..... I know most of the game is going to be the chase through the countryside. But do we need any time at the end where Frea tries to grab his victim even after he takes temporary refuge in his friend's safe house? Or do you want the game to end right after Brytta and company make it to Bree and ride through the city gates?
That's a long way off. But knowing that might help us keep an eye on the clock.
Your worst nightmare,
Frea
Dain,
Or do you want Frea to stay there guarding the "murderer", then try and stop the rescue but get knocked unconscious?
This is what we would prefer you do. You do not need to do anything with your character until we attempt to break Heldor out.
You are correct about the cooperation, but Carrun and I do not have any direct plans for the end of the game. As it moves along, we will give you more information on the finale.
Dain:
In my last post, I mentioned Frea being at the inn. This would explain his being suspicious about Heldor escaping.
To clarify things, could you edit your last post to include (at the very top of it) the the following text in bold:
1 Day Later
Knights of Rohan:
We will now need to commence the attack. Have your next posts describe how you got up early in the morning, and hurried to the meeting place near the Golden Hall. Once everyone has posted abou their arrival there, We will begin to get the horse and wagon, and began the raid.
Note About Knight' next posts: The time of day that your characters need to arrive at the meeting place is around 3:00 am. Thus, it is dark, and the streets are empty. Be quiet and wary, stay out of the center of the road.
The Inn is a great touch. It certainly ties in with my post.
But, don't be surprised if Fréa is always expecting things to go wrong. He is naturally suspicious of anything and anybody! It's part of his nature to worry and scheme.
I am really sorry!! In fact I just can't express how sorry I am... I went for holidays without telling.... Ooops.. It'll never happen again. I don't how it could 'slip' my mind. I knew I was going and I forgot to tell... I am a horrible person. Shame on me...*slaps herself, real hard* "Ouch!" I kind of deserved it...
However, I am back now, and the RPG is looking good. I have a question though. (You see, I am a bit confused)
Liol is going with Brytta to the prison, right?? And they do...... what??
This may be a silly question. Well it is a silly question. I just need to have it clear. In that way it's much easier for me to catch up and write a post as soon as possible...
Okey, I have held you too long...
Thanks in advance..
Novnarwen:
Check my last post. Your next post should be about Liol and Brytta arriving at the King's Hall, and entering it. We might have trouble with the guards, or a peasent, but make it hard for us to physically get inside. Once in, I will also post. Here is the general layout of our escape plan.
1. We get inside the King's Hall, and recieve permission from a guard to see the prisoner.
2. We go down a long set of curving steps into a small room, where the key master is. You distract him, while I take his keys and go into the cell room.
3. Frea is in the cell room. I go in, we fight, but I knock him out before he can call for help.
4. After a long, friendly and animated conversation, you distract the key-master's attention to some object in the room, and knock him out as well.
5. We then free Heldor, and lock the two baddies in his cell (gagging them first). After doing so, we signal to Rochil and Evinyater through the window, and they hand us ropes to tie around the window.
6. Once it is broken out, we help Heldor get out of the window, and Rochil and Aldwulf hide him in the wagon. They leave, having already dealt with the guard at the gate - - -
Speaking of that, Evinyater - in your post, add something about getting rid of the guard(s) at the gate. My suggestion is to get them drunk, then they wouldn't remember a thing.
Anyway...
7. With Heldor away, Liol and Brytta leave the way they came, locking every door behind them. They leave the King's hall without suspicion, and hurry down to their horses. They mount and ride out of Edoras, soon meeting Rochil and Aldwlf.
Dain:
About your question.
Yes, we will physically fight. The steps I made in my last post will be split between us.
THE FOLLOWING IS VERY IMPORTANT. Because the Prison break is a very delicate issue, we will need to post in the following order, covering the following details:
First Post: Novnarwen
What is covered:
We get inside the King's Hall, and recieve permission from a guard to see the prisoner.
We go down a long set of curving steps into a small room, where the key master is. You distract him, while I take his keys and go into the cell room.
After a long, friendly and animated conversation, you distract the key-master's attention to some object in the room, and knock him out as well.
I have edited my post - the young guards are well on their way to getting quite drunk.
Earwen - your character will have an easy time of entering into the big circular area (surrounded by a dike and wall) that holds the Golden Hall (the King's residence is there as well as the seat of Rohan Government). Your character in fact could comment on the fact that the guards seem a little tipsy and offered no challenge to your entry.
Aldwulf has one more skin of ale from the Inn - he'll toss that to them as we leave with Heldor hidden beneath the blankets and the hay.
elven maiden Earwen:
It is up to you and Evinyitar. Both of you may post if you like.
Novnarwen:
The King's Hall is a large barn-like building, with (of course) the King's Hall in the first room. We must pass through the hall the find the steps that lead to the dungeon.
The walls of the Hall are furnished with gold, and have various pictures carved into them. You do not need to be THAT descriptive; the important thing is us getting there.
Look over my order of posts, and put in a save for yourself even if you don't have your post ready. This will make it possible for everyone else to post.
Dain: Excellent Post! It fit perfectly into mine.
Everyone Else: This is what needs to be done next:
1. Novnarwen needs to send Child her post for the save block.
2. Himaran needs to fill in his save block for Liol and Brytta to escape.
3. Dain Ironfoot needs to post his awakening in the cell and escape, along with gathering the group to follow Brytta.
After this is completed, the next section of the game will begin.
On a less formal note, everyone is doing a splendid job. Good, solid writing; and excellent teamwork.
Thank you for saving a spot for me...
Nova's post
Liol stood waiting around on the back side of the King's Hall, when Brytta appeared around the corner. The cousins trudged up the hill side and to the castle, none of them said a word. The building was large and looked a lot like an old barn. Liol looked up, the roof stretched up and far above their heads. "Come on," Brytta muttered. "Lets do what we came here to do," he continued. The woman agreed with him, and was pleased to see he was eager to get started, just like her.
Inside the light blinded them. Liol rubbed her eyes trying to see clearly. "Alright," she whispered and her cousin led the way. The hall was a stunning place. The golden walls were filled with pictures. They were carved into the wall, and the motives were many. Liol got a glance of a woman, from one of the pictures, bending down to pick up a flower. Her eyes were deep and looked out of the wall. Liol shuddered; it was almost as if the lady watched them passing the guards. Brytta and Liol continued, hoping no one would notice them. They walked with careful steps, looking around in the room after some suspicious eyes.
"Oh dear. Where are you two going?" They had come to the end of the Hall. A tall guard looked down on them. Liol became all off a sudden insecure. Ouch, she thought, already noticed. Well, they had to explain their errand at least once, but to this guy? He looked like a rough guy who would cause problems, Liol thought. That one over there looks nice though. The woman looked around in the room, trying to get eye contact, maybe he would come over.
"I am Brytta, and this is my cousin Liol," Brytta explained. "We would like to see my brother Heldór," he continued. The guard looked at them with vicious eyes. "The guy who is going to be executed, you mean?" he said and gave a short evil, I-am-in-power laugh. Brytta grinned at him, while Liol just wanted to punch this nasty fellow. With effort Brytta held her back, but Liol was stilled upset by this guard's reply. "You ain't getting anywhere with that attitude," e said at last, after watching their reactions. He was especially looking towards Liol.
Now I've done it. Liol gave an I-am-sorry look towards Brytta, but he turned away saying nothing. The tall proud guard set his hands to his waist and it seemed that he really expected them to turn around and go. Liol was still mad but turned on the little charm she had. "I am sorry," she muttered while taking a step towards the guard. Liol made an innocent face, taking a hair lock and twinning it around her finger. "It's just that, this is my cousin, and he is going to die. Will you not let us see him one last time?" She folded her hands over her face and started whining. From between her fingers she saw a crowd looking at the tall man, now looking quite embarrassed, and he let his hand on her shoulder. The guard looked then around to make sure nothing was wrong and that he hadn't done anything to upset the little lady standing in front of him. Brytta on the other hand was surprised by Liol's play, but also surprised by the guard's reaction. The vicious man seemed finally to loosen up. Liol dried her tears away from her eyes with her hand back, just letting one tear left run down her cheek. "Don't cry," the guard said at last, now desperate in his voice. He drew his hand roughly from the lady's shoulder and grew red. "Alright, you may see him. Just go down there," he pointed at a set of steps and continued:” you’ll find him, I guess."
Brytta grabbed Liol's hand and dragged her towards the steps leading to the dungeon. However, before Liol disappeared down and into the dark she could swear to have seen the guard pick up a tissue from his pocket and dry his wet eyes.
Brytta and Liol hurried down the curving steps. The light from the Hall grew fainter and fainter. As they were getting tired they finally reached the bottom. The light here wasn't too much to brag about, they were just able to see.
"Oh hi there," Liol shrieked. Brytta got the hint and hurried over to the other side of the room, unnoticed. The Key Master got up from his chair and stepped forward. It was a young (probably new) man. She passed him, walking over to the small des. "Your office, eh?" she asked, settling herself on it. The man looked as if he was relieved finally to have company, but also flattered that someone had called his desk and office. "Come here," she bade, and pointed at the desk. "Sit," she commanded. "Here with me."
The man stirred at her and grew pale, but did as she had asked. Brytta sat still in the corner listening attentively to the conversation. Just then when the Key-Master turned his back to the desk, to ump up on it, Liol grabbed the keys which were placed so nicely there. Brytta ran from the corner, got the keys from his cousin and continued to the cell room, and the Key-Master didn't suspect anything!
"I want to know all about your job," Liol said after there crazy stunt. The young man did again as she bade and started telling all there was to know; about the different keys, the prisoners, (and to Liol's rage he mentioned Heldór and called him an evil murderer). It seemed that Liol was listening very carefully to what the young man said, but the truth was that her ears were somewhere else. The cell room was close by, but she could still not hear anything from Brytta.
Minutes passed, and suddenly Liol heard a faint voice let out a small shriek. The Key-Master continued telling about his job. Now or never, Liol thought.
"Is that a rat?!," she screamed while jumping up on the desk. She was standing and pointing at a spot on the floor. The confused man stirred first at the floor then at the screaming lady. Liol held her fot ready and when he turned, she kicked him so hard in the face he fell on the floor unconscious.
"Ooops," she muttered, while taking a long jump over the body. "I'll just have to drag you," she said determined. With great effort she dragged him through the door, leading to the cell room, where she stumbled over another body. And close to by were her beloved cousins, Brytta and Heldór. They gagged the two new prisoners and locked them up in Heldór's old cell. The signal was given by Bryttan and from the window ropes appeared. A few moments after, there were no barred windows anymore. The had attached the ropes to the bars and pulled as hard as they could. Liol gave sigh when Heldór disappeared through the window, but happy to see him in good hands.
"Have you noticed?" Liol asked Brytta happily.
"What?" he asked while making ready to leave.
"I, Liol, have almost become a social person," she laughed. Brytta wrinkled his browns before he too gave a laugh. He had understood.
Thanks...
Himaran,
I need to ask you a question...
I've gone ahead and put most of Nova's post into the save space that was reserved for her, but I stopped at the point where she kicked the keymaster and he fell unconscious.
The end of the post actually deals with later events:
********************************************
"Ooops," she muttered, while taking a long jump over the body. "I'll just have to drag you," she said determined. With great effort she dragged him through the door, leading to the cell room, where she stumbled over another body. And close to by were her beloved cousins, Brytta and Heldór. Do you want me to put the bit above in the same space as the other, just continuing on with the same long post? Or, because this part deals with later events, shall I put it at the end of your own first post, perhaps editing the words slightly so that the post fits better into the sequence (almost like a retrospective reflection)?
Please advise and I will do this or whatever else you prefer.
This is what I would prefer, to make the sequence flow better.
Everyone:
Here is a general idea of what needs done and how much time we need to take to do it.
In the next two weeks:
The baddies form their group and leave Edoras. It will be difficult to pick up their trail due to a rainstorm.
The good company will continue forward, with a few subplots along the way. Upon reaching the Gap of Rohan (at the end of the two week period), they are attacked by wargs and lose their horses.
+++++++++
The week after that:
The good company travels north on foot, and becomes lost south of Bree in the Wilderness. Awyrgan the ranger finds them and agrees to put them back on course.
The baddies continue north, passing the area in which the good company got off the path. They reach Bree, searching the town but finding no company.
The week after that:
The good company continues north with Awyrgan, passing by Bree.
The bad company leaves Bree, and north again. They eventually catch up with the good company, and the two groups clash.
++++++++++++++++++++
The final week:
Undecided.
Therefore, the game will take five more weeks. Keep an eye on the discussion thread for other information about more detailed plot issues.
Piosenniel and everyone,
I've filled in the save when Archim spoke to me.
If I get a chance, I'll post again late tonight. If not, I'll see you guys in 6 days. Himaran, please take good care of Fréa. smilies/biggrin.gif
Himaran,
I went ahead and pasted in the end of Novnarwen's post in the spot right after yours as you requested. I did some minor editing to help it flow smoothly.
There was one other change I made. You had stuffed the prisoners into Heldor's old cell. But you can't do that....otherwise Frea would have easily leapt from the window to make his escape since the bars were gone. So I changed that phrase to a "spare cell."
Hope this is ok....
Whatever works is fine with me. Actually, I had invisioned a cell block, with narrow walkway covering the length of the cells and a window at the end of the walkway; not physically in Heldor's cell. But it really doesn't matter, and your edit proabably makes more sense than what I wrote smilies/wink.gif
Everyone:
Here is my plan for the plot over the next two weeks.
The Bad Guys smilies/tongue.gif
When Brytta's party reaches the gap, they will lose their horses. Therefore, to avoid catching up with them (which does not happen until later), you need to lose some time following them.
Observe my last post (for Frea). Take SEVERAL DAYS attempting to find our trail again, as getting lost in the Middle of the West Emmet is not exactly a mess which is easy to get out of.
The Good Guys (and Girl smilies/wink.gif )
We need to be at the Gap of Rohan within about a week (playing time). Durin this period, subplots can be worked in.
Here is my suggestion: Along the way we see in the distance two scouts, patrolling the West Emmet. We quickly get Heldor off of his horse and hide him, hoping to bluff past them and then return for Heldor. But the guards spot him, and despite our claims that we merely have a spare packhorse, one of the guards is adamant that he spotted a fifth man.
Since no one is posting, or sure of what to do next, I will once again call upon a favorite evil tactic of the control freak: yes, you guessed it; SAVES!!!!
Place your posts in the discussion thread, and Pio or I will put them in their proper place.
Posts for the good guys:
To give us something to do before reaching the Gap of Rohan, we will just follow my idea that I mentioned earlier.
1: (elven maid Earwen: you already have your own save):
Have Rochil be riding along, and happen to scan the surrounding land and spot two Rohanian knights coming towards them from afar. Alert Brytta.
2: (Himaran) The group hides Heldor
3: (Evinyatar) The guards arrive and the one claims that he saw a fifth man with the company. He will not back down.
4: (Novnarwen) Liol "convinces" the guards that they are mistaken. The guards leave on their horses, and the groups gets Heldor and continues
After that: The Baddies:
The story as of now is mainly about yourselves. Here is what needs to be done.
1st post(Orofaniel): Frea and Company break camp.
2nd Post(Tinuviel of Denton): Frea and Company follow trail of horses north, eventually reaching the eaves of southern Fangorn.
3rd post (Piosenniel): The mangled, dead remains two horses are found, and the truth is realized:
4th post: (Dain; he should be back) The group realizes there folly, and heads southwest towards the gap, knowing that Brytta is there already.
Well, there you go: Confusing, but it works.
Here's my post - I'll PM Pio to place it if it's alright.
Envinyatar's post
The two guards drew near. Aldwulf could see their eyes dart about the place where the four of them now stood. The one on the right drew near his companion and said something, then pointed with his chin toward where Aldwulf and his companions stood.
Aldwulf was standing at his mount’s side, holding the horse’s leg in his hand as he picked at the inside of the hoof with his knife blade. He placed the hoof back on the ground as if he had finished his business with it, and turned smiling to the two men who had now drawn quite near, his knife held by its point hung casually from his hand.
‘Picked up a stone, the poor beast,’ he said shaking his head at the riders. Their eyes betrayed no friendliness and they glanced about the camp as if expecting to find something their eyes could not ferret out. ‘My three friends and I expected to make it to Halef’s holding by mid-afternoon today, but now it looks as if we won’t limp in until tomorrow.’
‘Your three friends, is it?’ challenged one of the guards, his gaze fixed on Aldwulf’s face. ‘We have been riding steadily this way ourselves.’ He raised a gloved hand, pointing west to a small rise just behind them. ‘We came down through there. Five riders is what we counted. Where is your other companion?’
Aldwulf said nothing, only noted that the guards had come closer by a few paces and separated their mounts. They had thrown back their cloaks, and he saw that their swords had been loosed of their clasps in the sheaths. ‘What can I say? There are only four of us. Perhaps it was just a shadow or a miscount – the trees are thick up there, our figures must have been cut from your sight as we passed along.’
The pommel of his knife came to rest on his other hand’s palm. They were close enough . . . one quick flick and he could take the man in the neck . . . the other could be dealt with quickly after that . . .
It was then that Liol stepped forward, her hand resting casually on his arm, staying the urge to bring the guard down . . .
from Envinyatar's post
It was then that Liol stepped forward, her hand resting casually on his arm, staying the urge to bring the guard down . . .
I don't think Liol would do that. I mean, Liol would never step forward volunteerly to talk to a guard if there was any other way.
from Liol's prsonality..
She doesn't like to have conversations with others, than her family. Only family members are her friends and only them will reach in to her mind.
Envinyatar- would you care to change that??
Instead, I was thinking that perhaps your character 'pushed' her forward. Once she stood there, Liol couldn't turn back. (Afterwards, I was thinking, that Liol could be a bit 'cranky' because Aldwulf set her in that position...)
Any thoughts?
I left that sentence in as a lead in for your character. It is now removed.
Aldwulf is focused on the guards and the threat they offer, and wouldn't be inclined to push you forward at this point.
So - go ahead and have your character deal with the guards as she will.
THIS REVISED POST IS NOW ON THE GAME
Liol grew almost motionless when she pointed towards two guards appearing and coming in their direction
Brytta hid Heldor and arrived when the riders were just about to unmount their horses. The others had set up a 'made-up' camp. The camp didn't really look like a camp, but Liol an the others tried to be as convincing as possible. The riders gazed at them, looking for something they could use against them. "My three friends and I expected to make it to Halef’s holding by mid-afternoon today, but now it looks as if we won’t limp in until tomorrow."
“Your three friends, is it?” asked one of the guards, having a threatening tone. “We have been riding steadily this way ourselves.” It was Aldwulf who spoke. "We came down through there. Five riders is what we counted. Where is your other companion?" asked the guard seriously, while haveing a stiff look in his eyes.
Liol felt a pain in her stomach; this was definitely going the wrong way. She couldn't see how they were getting out of this one. They knew they had been five, how was it then possible to fool them?
"What can I say? There are only four of us. Perhaps it was just a shadow or a miscount – the trees are thick up there, our figures must have been cut from your sight as we passed along." Aldwulf continued.
Liol stared at the guard, looking suspiciously at her and the others. "You, Milady, can you tell me what's going on?" the guard asked while pressing his lips together making it small and thin; just like a thread. Liol went all red, am I to speak, she thought.
"Well," she said in a frustrated voice. Liol couldn't breathe. What was she to say? The lady had no idea. And the warning looks from her travelling fellows didn't exactly help.
"The fifth man you saw, was.." she made a pause breathing like tired horse who had galloped for hours. An idea popped into her head and she said in a determined voice: ”It was my husband," she said, getting a glance of the others reactions. Brytta looked the most stunned, but Rochil was right behind, stirring down in the earth, trying not to laugh. Liol gave him a glare before the guard spoke again:" Then why did he leave?" The other guard laughed, thinking he had her, the place he wanted her; no escape.
"Well, his mother is sick, and I am going to my reletives, and he rode after me to say that, his mother had passed away," she answered, faking a couple of tears. The guard looked surprised at the lady. "Now, will you please let us do our business." she continued looking quite harsh at the harassing guard.
The man gave her a warning but also a pityful look, before seating himself on the horse again. "No trouble then?" he asked. Liol gave a nod saying: "You are a good man." But a stupid one too, Liol thought while turning around to the others.
As the guards disappeared, Brytta went to fetch Heldor. Rochil was the first to brake into laughter, Liol followed. "Guards are so stupid," she burst out. The others nodded. "I think the husband thing was funnier, though," Rochil cried out. The lady watched the man while he laughed. "Is it that impossible for you to imagine me, having a husband? I might have one in the future, you know" she snapped. "Am I that ugly?" she continued. Liol felt the rage inside of her just grow and grow. The man stared at her, quiet now. "But I didn’t mean...I didn’t.." he said quickly.
Brytta appeared with Heldor at the same time, and before Rochil could say more, Liol ran over to them.
It was really quiet when they continued, none said a word. Had Liol been too hard on him? Yeah, the lady thought. She had let her temper control her, and now, she was full with regret. The shield maiden rode right ahead of him, but she didn't look back. Liol was too ashamed.
This was a good post . . . But, you will need to delete your references to Aldwulf - possibly change your references to Brytta or Rochil.
Aldwulf was in a more serious mood than you suggest as shown by my post just previous to yours. He actually was considering killing the two guards. It is out of character for him to suddenly be laughing and commenting about how Liol has decided to handle it.
but Adwulf was right behind, fingering his moustache helping himself not to laugh.
Aldwulf was the first to brake into laughter, Liol followed. "Guards are so stupid," she burst out. The others nodded. "I think the husband thing was funnier, though," Adwulf cried out. The lady watched the man while he laughed. "Is it that impossible for you to imagine me, having a husband? I might have one in the future, you know" she snapped. "Am I that ugly?" she continued. Liol felt the rage inside of her just grow and grow. The man stared at her, quiet now. "But I didn’t mean...I didn’t.." he said quickly.
It was Hama's idea to camp for the night and so they did. Next morning they had decided to follow their only trail, even though they would be days behind they were all relived that they finally found something.
The night was drawing close and the darkness was kreeping over them. The moon was rising slowely over the horizon. They got to bed, and they all slept the whole night except from Graitwa.
He found it very difficult ot sleep, indeed. He lay with wide open eyes and let his thought flow with him like an uneasy stream. His thought were unclear somehow. They always were. Well, it would be a lie to say that Graitwa was a man that spent much of his time thinking about life, but this time he was. The unthoughtful man was thinking about his life situation for once!
The night grew dim and the morning fell over them as the sun was beginning to rise. The packed all their things in a hurry, because they wanted to to start going as soon as possible. They were heading north, and as they went, they all felt the burning sun in their faces. Graitwa was in the front, barking at the other to please follow.
That's my post! It wasn't so long but I didn't know what more I could write about. Anyway, just let me know if it needs. changes smilies/biggrin.gif
THANK YOU, OROFANIEL!
That said, here's my post.
____________________________________________
Hama rode at the back. He was neither a tracker, nor was he the eldest. It seemed to be more appropriate for him to ride there, rather than at the head of the line. Graitwa--at least, he thought that the older man in the group was called Graitwa--had woken everyone rather rudely right before the sun rose. Hama hadn't complained. He'd somewhat expected to be the general dogsbody in the group and had not been surprised. The older men had ordered him to do the chores that were necessary when taking down a camp and he'd complied.
They rode all day, stopping several times to check their course against the trail of the horses. Archim relieved Hama as rearguard. Near noon, they stopped by a stream to water the horses and to eat some waybread.
"Poor Lluagor," Hama whispered to his mare, stroking her sleek neck. "So much work for you, my lovely one. Don't worry, we'll catch that man and then we'll go home and you can rest. I hate to push you like this though."
The older guard and his brothers were arguing softly about something, but when Hama came closer, they stopped talking and looked at him angrily. Family troubles, he surmised. The three of them, though they were brothers didn't seem to get along very well. He couldn't help but wonder why. If he'd been able to ride along, tracking killers with his brother, he would never argue with him. Of course, his brother was d.ead, so that would never happen.
They kept riding after the noon break, Hama behind the two older brothers, with Archim in the rear. Hama didn't like where this trail was going. Would the murd.erer and his rescuers really go into Fangorn? The forest was full of creatures that were said to be unfriendly to killers. The whole thing didn't make much sense.
Then they reached the edge of the Forest. Hama felt as though there were eyes on him. Unfriendly eyes. It seemed that either Graitwa and Frea didn't notice, or that they didn't care, because they immediately started looking for where the fugitives had entered the forest. Hama looked as well, though he didn't really know what he was looking for...
It appears that all saves have been filled, so the game can continue.
Since our time of travelling in Rohan is up, I will bring us to the gap and begin the warg attack. Other members of Brytta's company will continue it. Remember, all horses are lost and minor injuries may be sustained; (i.e. Broken arm from falling off of a horse).
The number of wargs attacking will be roughly 10, thus it would be easy for them to kill the 5 horses.
We need to move along, so I culmonated the warg attack in my single post.
HOWEVER I did leave a save for other player's battle posts, should they wish to do so. Simply place them in the discussion thread and Pio, Child or I will put them up.
What must occur now:
Brytta and his company trek north. They decide to stay off of the main road, and get lost east of it. They then meet Awyrgan.
Frea and company find the disaster at the field, and are filled with new hope. They pass by the place wear the group lost the path, and they continue north towards Bree.
I have moved the company beyond the bounds of Rohan. They are now in Dunland, making for the ancient road that would take us northwest to Tharbad at the Greyflood River and from there up to Bree. It will be easy for the company to miss the road, as it is somewhat decayed, and overgrown.
We can go too far north, halting just before reaching Methedras (the last tall peak at the southern end of the Misty Mountains) and then turn west and be lost in the wilderness just south of the Sirranon River and the Glanduin River.
I do have a question. I might have missed it because I was on vacation before. Does our group know for sure Brytta was heading to Bree? When did they learn that? If we don't already know that, then why do we ride north and west after we get out of the Pass?
I assume we'd be heading north on the Old South Road towards the Greenway and eventually the Great East Road if we were heading to Bree.
Sorry if I missed something or am confused about this Bree thing. Himaran, Graitwa, Archim, Hama.....any ideas?
Here’s my reasoning for going Northwest. Having come through the Gap of Rohan, we are now in Dunland, the natives there are not all that friendly to the Men of the Mark (an ancient grudge).
Our group should by now realize that Brytta’s group is on foot. And I am thinking the Forgoils will reason that the Hyldesons will want to make for a friendly area of Men.
The easiest, quickest way to do that, would be for the Hyldesons to head up the Old North-South Road to Tharbad (We should stop there, and look for them.) Not finding them there, we could head for the next Mannish settlement – Bree. The Greenway (which is what the Old North-South Road is known as when it leaves Tharbad) ends in Bree, where it intersects the Great East-West Road. We can always think that they may have gotten horses somehow, and are ahead of us on the road.
Unfortunately, for the Forgoils at any rate, the Hyldesons have gotten off course and missed the overgrown track that used to be the ancient road and are now lost somewhere north of it. The Forgoil group should reach Bree before the Hyldeson group, and from there can scout the countryside.
Perhaps Hama could find more dragged off horse remains a little to the south.
Dain
Since you are scouting back a little – which is where the actual warg attack took place (an hours hike south east of the Fords of Isen, just along the foothills near Helm's Deep), then you could find evidence of the killed wargs.
Piosenniel,
Thanks for the explanation. It was very helpful.
I did see why Brytta headed northwest, but wasn't sure if the Forgoils understood the ultimate goal was Bree and how they could justify heading there in the storyline. However, your idea about stopping in Tharbad and not having any luck, then assuming the Hyldesons replaced their horses and headed on to the next mannish settlement (Bree) makes a lot of sense.
I'll drop a note to remind Tinuviel to post or put a save on the thread. I'll also try to do another post tonight to find those dead wargs in the direction you've spelled out.
Again thanks for the help. Geography has never been my strong point! smilies/biggrin.gif Just ask my teachers!
Alright - it looks as if the Hyldeson group is now set up to be lost in the sparsely populated wilds between the North-South Road and the River Sirannon to the north of it.
It is a low hilly area with some low-lying fertile areas nearer the road. Hillmen and shepherds sparsely populate this area.
I am supposing this is where the Ranger will find them . . . yes?
_____________________________________________
Hunters - the Forgoil/Hama group
The group of Hunters have now discovered all the horses are dead and that the escapees are on foot. They have reasoned that the escapees will head toard a safe Mannish settlement, avoiding any encounters with the foe of the Rohirrim - the Dunlanders, if possible.
The Hunters will go north a short way and find the grown over, Old South Road that leads up to Tharbad on the Greyflood River, thinking this is where they will find the escapees.
It is about 200 miles from the Hunters' present position to Tharbad - about 1 1/2 weeks of riding. We should sight the road after 2 days of riding north. The start of it should be just a little southeast of Methedras, the last tall peak of the Misty Mountains.
We will be on a much overgrown road going north west - a broad fertile plain will be to our left and on our right will also be fertile lands, broken up by small hilly rises.
Who wants to do a post for the Hunters getting them to the Road start?
After that, Hunters, we need posts encompassing two or three days of riding - thoughts on the countryside, irritations with the others in the group, etc. can all show up in this. Hunting might be poor and provisons getting short (perhaps they didn't plan that it would take this long to find the escapees). Whatever you want to do is good as the group passes along this long section of road.
Here is a map of the area we are all currently in:
There will be one final danger before the group meets Awyrgan. A group of Dunalanders will come down the road, causing Brytta and co to run off it into the brush. Then we get lost.
Pio, Dain, it is up to you if you want your company to have a run-in with the Dunlanders.
Hunting might be poor and provisons getting short (perhaps they didn't plan that it would take this long to find the escapees).
And of course Hama will be blamed for that as he is the one whom Frea sent to get provisions in the first place. One more reason for him to dislike the Forgoils, if they get mad at him for their lack of provisions. I sense tempers lost...
Look at the map link that is on my previous post. Keep them at the base of the low-lying hills that run about 20 miles east of the Old South Road that the Forgoils are taking.
Follow the course of the road and cross the Greflood River between Tharbad and and the little streams just north east of Tharbad (Swanfleet area).
Go directly north from there over the plain and pass between the Midgewater Marshes and the Weather Hills as you cross over the East Road. Just past the marshes would be a good place to find some place for them to stay for a while.
At that point, the escapees will be about 30 miles northeast of the upper limits of Bree-land. Near the Forest in which the little towns of Chetwood and Archer are.
See Shire/Bree-land (http://www.shirepost.com/ShireMapLarge.html) map - the far right of it.
Carrun and I and working out a route for the Hyldeson party. Now is the time for for Frea's group to hurry up the old south road, (possibly clashing with the group of Dunlenders), and arrive at Bree. Once this is done, Brytta will head north.
What happens at Bree?
Frea and his minions search the town and local inn, The Prancing Pony, for any sign of the Hyldesons. While they are there, the Hyldesons will pass by Bree, and head north.
The End of the Game?
Frea heads north from Bree, Eventually running into the Hyldesons... the outcome is undecided as of yet.
Hi!
I am really sorry to inform you that Orofaniel, my best friend in real life, has got a virus on her computer. The virus is like the worst ever. I was to tell from her that someone has to set up saves for her character, Graitwa, if you feel the he has to take part.
As for me, I am not really allowed on the computer either since the virus attacked over 30 000 computers in one day! I'll try to post when I am at the library in the weekends; this counts also for Orofaniel.
In the meanwhile you could do whatever you'd like with Liol. Orofaniel is also giving you the right to do whatever you want with her character Graitwa.
The virus has hopefully lost its power by 10th of September, I believe Flight from Rohan ends at 16th, which means both of us can join again the last week, if that's appropriate.
We are both very very sorry, and hope it will work out fine!
Thanks,
Therefore, Awyrgan will remain with us until the end of the game, after reaching the north downs above bree.
OK - the Forgoils and Hama are at the base of the Weather Hills. Four ruffians on foot have just stood up from the tall grass and ringed them - two with swords, two with spears. They are attempting to rob the Forgoils and Hama and will most likely kill them.
Archim has struck back at one of them, and we are now engaged in battle. Feel free to do one of them in or drive your opponent off.
We should then probably turn back west and high tail it for Deadmen's Dike (Fornost) and the North Downs.
With two of the bandits so readily dispatched, the remaining ruffians took off racing for the hills at breakneck speed, as they left their fallen companions behind on the ground. When it looked as if Hama might also decide to give chase and try to emulate Archim’s deed, Fréa raised his hand in warning and abruptly drew the band to a halt, throwing an angry glance over his shoulder. “You worthless curs, all of you.” Fréa bellowed out his rage. “We’ve lost enough time on this fool’s errand! If you’d listened to me, this would never have happened. We’d be far north by now, and Brytta would be in our grasp.”
Archim turned around and froze, “Cur? You dared call me a cur? Your own brother! Who saved your neck back there? Fréa, I did not see you take down any bandits. If Graitwa and I hadn’t saved your skin, you’d be lying in the dirt cold and stiff. If anyone deserves the name of “cowardly cur”, it is you, not me.”
Fréa felt his rage boil over as he automatically grabbed for the hilt of his sword and brandished it at his younger brother, swinging it wildly in his direction. Only his blind madness caused the blow to go astray and swipe harmlessly down into the grass. At this point, Hama intervened, recklessly positioning his own body between those of the two feuding brothers, crying out at them to stop, since Brytta and his band would go unpunished if the Forgoils managed to kill each other first.
These words jerked Fréa back to reality as he shakily slid his sword back within its scabbard and barked at the group to head north and west in the direction of Fornost. He took off at a wild gallop outdistancing his brothers and Hama, listening to the angry voice in his head that raged on. If it was not for Archim’s stupidity, we would be there by now. Why am I blessed with such idiots as brothers?
By the way - one league is about 3 miles.
Thanks! - E -
Envinyatar's post
They had been camped in the Downs for a number of days.
‘I’ll be going south then.’ Aldwulf crouched down and drew a crude map in the dirt with a stick. Opposite him was Awyrgan, who nodded his head ‘yes’ at the man’s statement. ‘About four leagues from here, and a short distance to the west,’ continued Aldwulf. Again, Awyrgan confirmed he had the right of it, then queried him on how he would approach the small settlement left in the ruins of Fornost.
‘I’m going south of it and approach it as if I’ve just come up from Bree. I’ll give some story if I’m asked that I’ve come up to see about some land for a small holding for my family. Goat farming, along the hills of the Downs. I’ll say I plan to stay at least a fortnight to cover my need for a quantity of food supplies.’
Aldwulf stood up, running the list of needed supplies through his mind one more time. He emptied his pack to make room for them, and shouldered it. ‘Look for me tomorrow, late,’ he said, fastening his sword securely round his hips. ‘I’ll come back as quickly as I can.’
The others saw him off, saying that they would post a lookout for him on the outcropping of rocks that jutted out from the low hillside that hid their camp. And that if there were any problems as he approached their camp, he should signal the lookout by stopping, as if weary, and readjusting his pack, then running his left hand through his hair, as if pushing it back from his forehead.
The instructions were repeated, and Aldwulf set off south at a brisk pace, keeping his eyes and ears open for any signs of trouble.
Please put this one just before Awyrgan's SAVE.
It will put the Forgoils in place near the unsuspecting company of Brytta et al.
Envinyatar’s post
It was very early evening when Aldwulf rounded the dip in the path he had taken south as he left the camp. There, visible now a short distance away was the rocky outcropping the others had said would hold a lookout for him. Whoever it was on the rock had hidden himself, or herself. He grinned thinking of Liol crouched down behind the tops rocks awaiting his signal.
But there was none to give. He had seen or heard no one in pursuit. All was clear, as far as he was concerned. He strode on toward the bend which would take him behind the outcropping, and down to the little dell in which his companions waited.
Shifting his pack on his shoulders, he looked up again at the rocks. Then, with a quickened pace he headed back to where Brytta and the others waited, his voice raised in the low singing of some ballad.
At his left shoulder, he heard someone hiss at him. ‘Quiet down! No need to let anyone near know where we are!’ Chastened, he kept quiet as he marched the last few yards into camp.
Unheeded the Forgoils drew nearer, taking up advantageous positions above their quarry . . .
Alright, here's my post:
____________________________________________
Following the Forgoils, Hama crept forward towards the Hyldesons' camp. Since the battle with the bandits, he hadn't really felt at ease with himself. Yes, stepping between the brothers had been the right thing to do, he didn't doubt that action, but there just was something not quite right about this whole mission. Things didn't add up, the Forgoils kept referring to something that sounded out of place on the road when they thought he couldn't hear them, and Frea--well, Frea just made the young man nervous. Something was rotten here. Hama just couldn't figure out what.
Archim. Well, Hama hadn't liked the man at first, but...he had been friendlier after that fight and it was getting harder and harder to keep things straight. Graitwa. He never said much, just...looked. He made Hama almost as nervous as Frea did. But, Frea, Frea had been ready to kill his brother. His own brother. And something about the whole thing just ate at Hama's gut.
Things were moving so fast; he didn't know what to do. It was like a dream, one that he would have given a great deal to be able to wake up and for none of it to have happened. He wasn't supposed to be here; he was just a jail-guard. The killer had been caught, given trial as was right and proper, and that should have been the end of it.
He watched the men in the camp, and waited for the signal. He didn't like this, and he was beginning to wonder if he'd made a mistake in joining the Guards of Rohan in the first place. He didn't know if he could take a life, which he might have to do when things came down to that critical point.
____________________________________________
You can put this wherever you think it would fit best.
Also, I'm thinking that, whoever may die in Brytta's group, Hama is definitely going to be a casualty. I've just now decided this, spur of the moment.
Pio, Himaran,
Could you paste this in the save spot where Fréa first sees Aldwulf?
********************************************
Dain's post
Fréa looked over at Hama and glared. "Today we'll stick together. I want no one running off on hare-brained errands and getting in trouble. We need to pick up a supply or two. More importantly, we need to keep our eyes and ears open to see if there is any sign of Brytta or his companions."
Fréa and his brothers trailed in and out of stores, filling up their saddlebags with needed supplies while Hama walked alongside Archim. There was little enough to buy in a poor settlement such as this. A look around suggested that things were definitely tight in this run-down excuse for a hamlet.
Fréa asked a few questions of people milling about the street, but with little results. The villagers merely shrugged their shoulders and indicated they'd seen no travellers who fit the description he'd given them. As the party came near the middle of what passed for a market square, the two brothers and Hama disappeared into a shop selling spirits while Fréa continued ambling further up the street.
It was then that he saw him. Fréa could not initially tell exactly who he was. But his dress and stride clearly marked him out as an outsider and, even more, as a man of Rohan. The fellow was stopped in a public square lifting a ladle of water to his lips, having stopped for a moment at one of Fornost's public wells.
Fréa crept up as close as he dared and was stunned by what he saw. Standing in front of him, no more than ten feet away, was the familiar figure of Aldwulf. He looked once, and then again to make sure that he was seeing things correclty, but always with the same results. The man was clearly Aldwulf.
Sprinting back towards the shop where he had last seen his brothers, he tugged impatiently at Graitwa's sleeve, all his personal anger and impatience dissolving as he considered the possibility of victory and freedom looming just ahead.
"Come now, quickly lead your horses through the street. I have seen Aldwulf no more than fifty paces from here, stopping at a public well to take some water. He gives no heed to his surroundings or those about him. I believe we can follow cautiously as long as we keep a fair distance between us."
Fréa grinned with pleasure. Perhaps Aldwulf was fool enough to lead them to Brytta's encampment. Perhaps tonight, they would attack the camp and all his troubles would be ended, so that he could return to Edoras and get the promotion he deserved. With these positive thoughts, Fréa guided his brothers and Hama out into the roadway.
I'll try to work on that next save space later tonight or first thing in the morning.
Thanks. Here's another one that should go in the save space in the middle of that very long post. Thanks.
********************************************
Fréa hung back at the rear of the column keeping a close watch on the others who were further down the trail. He could see Archim and Hama parading at the front of the line, with Graitwa following just a few paces back.
At this point, Fréa was as much worried that Graitwa or Archim would do something impulsive to blow their cover as he was about actually losing sight of Aldwulf. Aldwulf didn't seem to be going anywhere except straight ahead on the path; he was clearly in their view. Yet, every so often, Archim would turn to Hama, and the two men would engage in spirited conversation about the vagaries of the man whom they were following. Once or twice, Fréa turned to his elder brother and grimaced, letting him know that he didn't approve of Archim's loose tongue.
Graitwa picked up on this, and trotted forward to his youngest brother's side, "Pipe down, you two. You're chattering like a flock of young jackdaws. If you don't close your mouths, Aldwulf may overhear us."
Despite this warning, Aldwulf remained totally oblivious to his pursuers as he continued striding up the path. At one point in the late afternoon, Graitwa dropped back to Fréa's side and started a discussion of his own, this one focusing on what would happen once they arrived at Brytta's camp."
"Do you think we'll have the chance to attack today and put an end to all this," Graitwa queried.
Fréa shook his head, "I hope so, but let's not be in such a big hurry until we actually see their camp. Even if the layout looks good, we'd probably want to wait till late tonight under cover of darkness, when their men have fallen asleep."
Graitwa flashed back a grin, "So you think it will be as easy as following this one?"
Fréa shook his head, "That's hard to believe. If they have any sense, they'll post a guard. I do not think that Brytta is as big a fool as this one who walks ahead of us. If there's a senty, he'll have to be carefully taken out. Then we'll see what happens...."
Aldwulf came to a temporary halt surveying the ridge that stood before him. He hesitated for an instant, looking about in all directions and then moved on. The campsite, the goal of all their travels, had to be dead ahead.
Ok, the end of the RPG has been planned. Here it is.
NOTE: Currun's last SAVE will detail Awyrgan's leaving the group before the fight.
Timeline: (I have put up the necessary saves to make sure the ending goes smoothly)
Tinuviel: I do not like to kill off other people's characters without asking, even at the end of a game. If you have any problems with losing Hama, say so and I can edit the storyline.
1. Dain's Post: Frea and Archim argue about the best course of action, Archim leaves in a sulk.
2. Pio's post: Archim decides to sneak up on his own, knife at ready. He finds a great shot at Brytta.
3. Dain's post: Frea can wait no longer; he orders the group to sneak up and attack. But where is Archim?
4: Tinuviel's post: Hama charges into the camp, sword at ready.
5: Pio's Post: Archim throws the knife, but it hits Hama instead, wounding him.
6: Dain's Post: Frea, dazed at the events, calls a retreat.
7. FINAL POST by Himaran: The group rushes over to Hama, and recognizes him. Brytta trys to convince him of the truth, before he dies, but whether he knows in the end is unknown.
The End.... a mystery.
********************************************
By the time the Forgoils had reached the outer edge of the encampment, the forest was wrapped in darkness. Still, Fréa was able to see at least the broad outline of the camp and what the men inside were doing. A fire burned bright some twenty-five paces away throwing out at least a few slivers of light. Telling the rest of his group to stay put, Fréa cautiously made his way along the perimeter, lying flat on the ground and pulling his body slowly forward through the underbrush.
He did not particularly like what he saw. Brytta's men were wide awake and showed no eagerness to retire for the night. Daggers and swords were still strapped about their waists, with bows and arrows set down near the center of camp within easy reach if an unexpected attack should come. However foolish Aldwulf had acted in his trip to Bree, Brytta was showing a great deal more caution and common sense in the way that he had organized the camp.
A sentry stood beyond the clearing patrolling along the outskirts. At one point, when the man strode forward and stared off into the forest, Fréa had to jump back and cower under a bush to avoid detection. He scowled, cursing his bad luck underneath his breath, and then crawled back towards the others as quickly as he dared.
Reaching the spot where Archim and Graitwa were waiting, he turned to them and shook his head, his voice no more than a whisper, "No luck! We shall have to hold off. At least till later tonight after everyone has gone to bed. It's too risky to try and strike now."
Archim glowered back at him, "How long a wait?"
Fréa casually shrugged his shoulders, "I don't know. I'll need to get another look at the camp. But I will say this. From what I can see, they plan to be in this area a while. They're apparently gathering building materials. If that's true, there's no great rush. I'd rather be cautious than end up with one of us losing our necks."
He turned back to look at his brothers to see what they would say.
Even though it was very late, and the darkness had krept over both Forgoils and Brytta's camp, they were still awake. Brytta and co. made no signs, at all to take down their weapons, and leave their camp unguarded for a nice dinner at the fireplace. Graitwa laughed at the thought of Aldewulf, how the fool had acted in his trip to Bree. Brytta however, seemed to be much wiser, the camp was very well organized and he seemd to show much more caution. Graitwa was very much impressed by this, but he didn't say this to his brothers.
Graitwa had been standing looking at the camp, examing every inch of it. This would be difficult he knew that. To attack a camp that was fully guarded was on the edge to be...isane.
Graitwa returend to his brother Archim, the very same evening. They were both quiet and didn't say much, nothing of importance anyhow. The silence was broke when Frea turned up.
"No luck! We shall have to hold off. At least till everyone sets down their weapons and relaxes over their evening meal. It's too risky to try and strike now." He wisphered while he shook his head.
Archim didn't seem too pleased about this and growled back: "How long a wait?"
Frea obviously didn't know what to answer, or what to do, so he shrugged his shoulders. Then, moments later, he took a deep breath and continued: "However long it takes. I don't really know. I'll keep a keen eye on the camp and see what's happening. But, from what I can see, they plan to be here a while. They're apparently gathering some sort of building materials. I'd rather be cautious than end up with us losing our necks." Graitwa stared at Frea, and Frea noticed this so he turned his head to hear Graitwa's point of weiw.
"I think it's a good idea." Graitwa said shorthly. "We have to wait, or we'll blow our chances. It's no point going to the camp now. They are well armed, and to tell you the truth; we will not have the slightes chance to get what we want and to get out alive." Graitwa continued. "I've been watching the camp very closely this evening." He added. "I've been examing every inch of it." He said at the end.
Graitwa looked over at his two bothers. He glanced over at Frea and his eyes met Frea's. Then Graitwa turened his eyes over to Archim. Archim seemed to be in his own thoughts so Graitwa clapped him on the shoulder. "I suggest we hide in the bushes near the camp too keep an eye on them." He said to get Archim's attention. Graitwa sucseeded to get Archim’s attention, because Archim was now looking at him with great eyes.
Archim was about to say something when Graitwa interrupted. "As I said, we need to keep an eye on the at all times. So that we can be ready when they are not!" He said in a stern voice. Then he laughed of his own comment.
"You want us to wait???" Archim said to Graitwa's amazement. Hadn't his brother listened to anything he had said?
Hi!
I realise that it's a long time since I've posted, but I also realise that I don't think I'll be able to post more in this RPG either.
The time zones can be really annoying, and when the saves are not filled, it's impossible for me to post, because I have no 'schedule' to go after. If you want me to post anything, erm.. Anyway, I enjoyed playing with you all. This is truly an extraordinary RPG with a brilliant story! I look forward to read the complete story in Elvenhome!
Dain's post
Frea's eyes were rivetted on Brytta's encampment as he intently watched every move that the men made. Once more, he crept up closer to the clearing, being careful to keep his body hidden under the low lying bracken and overhanging bushes.
He watched with intent interest as Brytta's men finally settled down for the evening. One by one, they began unbuckling the swordbelts from about their waists, setting the weapons down on the ground and drawing closer to each other as they engaged in spirited conversation. A thick stew was bubbling in a large pot that hung over the central fire. The woman went forward to dole it out as laughter and joking rose from the circle and one of the men drew out some pipes and began to play. Finally, the sentry who'd been patrolling on the edge of the camp came forward to share in a bit of the supper and companionship.
Fréa's eyes alit with glee. Now! Now was the time to strike! He raced backed to his own companions, heedless of the noise that he was making as he clambered through the underbrush.
"Up, now. Their minds are elsewhere. Quickly men! Forward. This is our chance."
Fréa pivotted around to face the group, taking in the forms of Graitwa and Hama. His older brother and Hama sprang up instantly and began roaring towards the clearing with swords and daggers drawn. But, before they could strike, one last question rose in Fréa's mind. Where in the blazes was Archim? Where was his brother? Although rapidly surveying the encampment, Fréa could still see no sign of Archim.
Powerless to call back his own men or to stop time from advancing, Fréa did the only thing he could do under the circumstances, snatching out his own blade and running to catch up with the others. The lust for battle swept over him, and he was instantly overcome with only one thought: the desire to strike as hard and fast as he possibly could.
‘Get up Brytta! We are under attack!’
Aldwulf knelt down beside the dying guard. The man’s pulse grew weaker, the blood slowing down to a trickle. ‘Draw your sword, Brytta, and rally the others,’ he said, loosening the collar of Hama’s tunic. The knife was deeply imbedded; there was no hope of saving him. ‘I’ll stay with him. He is almost gone.’
Brytta stood quickly and shouted out orders to Liol, Rochil, and Heldór. Swords drawn, they advanced on Fréa’s band prepared to defend themselves aggressively.
Aldwulf closed the fading eyes of the fallen man of the Mark. Hama gave one last quiet sigh and then let go his spirit. Aldwulf bent his head near the other’s, whispering. ‘You were a good man led wrong and a faithful warrior. May the grace of the Valar be with you now.’ Then he drew his blade and ran up the small rise toward Archim . . .
Dain's post
The shock of Hama's death, the utter senselessness of it, at first swept away all thoughts of battle from Frea's mind.
Evinyatar: Good post, but could you edit it and post it here again? In Tinuviel's post, it is Brytta who stands over Hama's dying form, not Aldwulf. Actually, it would be more like Aldwulf to go after the Forgoils, anyway. Can you have him rally the troops, instead of Brytta?
Thanks, Himaran -
P.S. I can edit it for you, but you are free to do it yourself. If you don't care, say so in the D.T and I will make the few adjustments.
It appears that everyone ganged up on Dain while I was gone.
I was not planning on having there be a fight at all, Frea was merely going to have a retreat and Bryttas group, stunned, would merely watch them disappear. And the game would end.
I am okay with Archim fighting Aldwulf, but seriously, they hacked each other to pieces. It would have been more like Archim to turn and run, as much from the wrath of his brother as anything else.
But the only thing I have a real problem with is when the group started fighting with Graitwa and Frea. Evinyatar, can you PLEASE edit those posts to fit in with my original plan?
Thanks, guys,
Himaran
HI!
Wow, I thought this ended yesterday, so I was all sordid and feeling bad, because this great RPG was over. Now, however I discover that it isn't! YAY!
Can you, Pio or Himaran, paste this in after Evinyatar's first post on September 14, 2003 08:00 PM?
I think it's the first post on the seventh page, the third post on that post. (I don't think that made sense.. erm...)Anyway, I think you'll find it... Just PM me or something if not.. smilies/biggrin.gif
‘Get up Brytta! We are under attack!’
Liol heard someone calling. She recongnised the voice, it was Adwulf's. Was he joking around? The little lady soon figured that Adwulf would never joke about a thing like this, and certainly not when he knew that the company had been in danger since they had set out from Rohan.
‘Draw your sword, Brytta, and rally the others!" Brytta didn't need to urge Liol to draw her sword, she had already done so, when Brytta came running towards her and Rochil.
Liol discovered a man laying on the ground with a knife pierced in his chest. She turned away, not daring to look at the blood streaming out of his wound.
‘I’ll stay with him. He is almost gone.’ Adwulf said, in a low and caring voice. Liol admired that Aduwlf was willing to stay with a dying man who had followed them since they fled from Rohan, who had chased them and wanted to see his good friend, Heldor in prison.
Her thoughts were interrupted by orders coming from Brytta. Liol took a firm grip around the hilt og her silver sword which was glimmering in the twilight. She looked at Rochil before they ran together forwards to meet the attacker coming straight towards them, with his deadly weapon.
Sorry - I will be gone for the rest of the week.
There is no need to rally the troops now.
I asked Pio to remove all my battle posts.
Use Aldwulf as needed.
Nice playing with you all.
Himaran, is this OK? If so, please post.
Dain's post
Fréa watched in shock as Archim's knife hurtled through the air and found its fatal target. Too stunned to respond, he stood frozen to the spot, legs rivetted and eyes unblinking, unable to move forward or to bring his weapon down on Brytta's head. Fréa stared at the tiny rivulets of blood that were seeping out of Hama's wound and pooling idly on the ground nearby.
Normally, for such a fool mistake, he would have turned upon his brother in a rage and let him know exactly how he felt. But something inside stayed Fréa's mouth. And words did not seem to fit right now. He motioned to his brothers to retreat and pull back towards the horses at the edge of camp.
When he glimpsed Archim stumbling about in the dark, seemingly not knowing where to go, Fréa went over to his brother and steadied him with an arm about his shoulder, and then gave him a lift up onto his mount. There was dead silence as the three brothers turned and hastily rode off. If they were pursued by Brytta's men, Fréa did not see it. All about was silence, as the trio urged their horses forward and disappeared into the night.
