How about a Rohan vs. Isengard adventure in the days when they were first fighting the orcs and half orcs of Saruman before the War of the Ring?
That seems like it would suit the largest number of people.

PEOPLE

HOBBITS: Possibly employees of Lotho Sackville-Baggins, making a special delivery of pipeweed to the gates of Isengard?
ORCS/HALF ORCS: A new generation, bred in the service of Sharkey, trained to obey and do the bidding of the wizard.
ELVES: Perhaps scouts from Lothlorien. They would not wish to be in contact with anyone, but might be sent to observe and report.
DUNLENDINGS: These half wild folk have been lured into Saruman's service. They are afraid that Rohan will attack at any moment and think only Saruman and his orcs can save them.
RIDERS OF ROHAN: They serve Theoden King, who sits on the throne in Meduseld. He is grown old and weary.
EASTERLINGS: Mustered to serve the Nazgul at Dol Goldur...

PLACES

MORIA: Don't go there!
LOTHLORIEN: Don't go there!
ISENGARD: Don't go there!
...hmmmmmm....looks kind of adventurous!
MEDUSELD: I hope you have a good reason...
HELM'S DEEP: Needs work. Are you here to work?
FANGORN FOREST: Don't go there!

 Details forthcoming. Sign up here!

If you have an ezboard alias that does not fit this scenario, and don't want to create a new alias for the game, just do as we've done in Bree and Mordor.
Certain important characters, such as Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Grima, Saruman, Galadriel, Celeborn, etc. should not be used without permission!
Let's try not to break with what is known in the books, though we can bend things a mite. Read the BREE and MORDOR threads and the RULES to get an idea of how we RPG here at the Downs!
Combat rules are the "literary" rules, rather than the "gaming" rules. (Readers of the RPG threads will understand!)
In short, what we do for a major combat is what we did in BREE for the fight between the Beorning and the Wight. On the Barrow Downs chat, we called a series of coin tosses, best 4 out of 7, the winner gets to write, or make the loser write the post. The coin tosses determine the blow by blow account, the writer elaborates.
Please feel free to ask questions and sign in here as you create a character for a ROHAN RPG, coming soon...

Can I play?
I will be one of the Riders. I'll have to work a bit on my background etc. but I already have my steed, Telefax, who at present is just getting fat and out of condition in the stables of the Chat Room "Prancing Pony".

I think I'll pop in shortly after the start, when I see the moment as apt (as I did in Bree).
And I doubt that there will then already be too many of the folk of my character

Re: ROHAN DISCUSSION
Such audacity! :D
Hoooom. Hooo.
Let's not be hasty! Hmmmmm. Roomty tum hum hooom.
I'm working up a scenario that doesn't go in that direction, off the bat. But you tempt me!
A wandering Ent, perhaps searching for the Entwives, might chance upon the party (or vice versa) from Rohan. Like Sharkey's surprise choice, choosing something like an Ent means waiting for the right moment, which could take a little while.
But, having said that, I'm sure you'll do a fine job! (Having done so well in Bree!)
So, if you are not hasty, then you are welcome to play an Ent! :)
(Of course, you're also welcome to jump in with any standard character you want, but now you've got my thirst up for some Entdraft!)

Your posts are held until they can be edited (if necessary) and released.
Try not to do much of another player's playing for them.

Re: ROHAN DISCUSSION
I just read a certain post, and unfortunately, I had to delete it. :(
The writer did a very good job of playing another player's character, but that's his job! Please come up with your own character!
Folks, please make sure you are familiar with the rules, or you may waste quite a lot of inspiration and time!
Come up with a character and insert him at an appropriate time. If you want to play a Rider, now would be a good time. There are at least two unnamed Riders who have been mentioned so far, perhaps a couple more nearby, and relief riders on the way.
If you want to waylay Riders, greet Riders, meet Riders, then wait for them, do NOT write for another player in any major way. Each player must be able to make his or her own choices.
We can do a little bit of writing in which, in some minor way, another player's character takes part, but we cannot make major decisions for them.
Oh! And please do not use names used by actual major characters from LOTR. There is a world of other names that can be used!

Re: ROHAN DISCUSSION
Hi Gilthalion, this is Kate from chat in case you didn't know. :)
I would like to participate when the right time arises, if I may. I'm not sure if I have to put my character's stats, etc., here, but I will to be certain.
Name: Lathwine
Age: Old enough to think she knows everything (and to be offended at requests for the number), yet young enough to look foolish doing so. :)
Looks: Hideously, piteously ugly.
Attitude: Poses as a wise woman, demanding respect from younger people in a crochety manner. Unbeknownst to her, she's snickered at by all the townspeople.
I gtg now, but I'll jump in if I see an oppurtune time, and if there are any further developments, I'll be sure and let you know. ;)

Re: ROHAN DISCUSSION
This sounds intriguing -- I'm in, if you can accept me as one of the people in the group following Grima. How's this for a back story?
Thenamir is a man, as close to 6 feet even as makes no difference, short hair, beard, and moustache all sandy brown, which made him as different amongst the golden-haired Rohan natives as a Beorning in a group of hobbits. He is stocky but sturdily-built, a layer of fat covering a warrior’s body. He carries a family heirloom sword, Aranbold, and a bow, both wielded with passable skill, along with the normal accoutrements of a Rider of Rohan.
Born to a captain and raised in Minas Tirith, a lot was expected of Thenamir as a youth, and he earned his father’s trust and respect thru sheer will and hard practice and work more than inherited talent. He served under Boromir as a sub-captain (sergeant? Whtever the term is) over 20 good men. He fell in love with and married a fair and charming woman whom he had met in one of the outlying villages northeastward.
One year he was assigned to take his men for a rotating 3-month patrol in the outlying areas, and since it was near the wife’s family, he sent her ahead, planning to meet her there. They were expecting their first child in a few months, and this might be the last opportunity to visit her family for some time.
In the early dawn, just before Thenamir’s company arrived in that village, it was attacked by a band of strange-looking dark men, seeming looters but well organized, who overwhelmed the town’s small defenses and the men Thenamir was to relieve. Seeing the confusion from a distance, the enraged Thenamir rushed his men into the fray, charging the city. The dark men, thinking a larger force had arrived, began to panic and flee. Thenamir charged headlong into the throng, heedlessly hacking left and right, desperately trying to gain the place where he knew his beloved would have been staying.
Berganden was a proud bachelor, subcaptain of the men already in Lossarnach. When he saw the attack coming he ordered his small force as best he could at the gates, and ran to warn Linwen, wife of his friend Thenamir, and her family. Berganden was too late – the city wall had been breached and another band had reached them before he -- soon he too was slain, but not without taking over a dozen Easterlings with him.
One especially unfortunate invader picked up Berganden’s cloak and helm thinking them much nicer than what he was already wearing. Unfortunately for both Thenamir and himself, Thenamir came racing around the corner at that moment, slaying every moving thing, in a blind rage after finding his wife dead, not expecting to see the silver-and-sable cloak and helm that his sword had now cleaved one from the other. Thenamir stopped, looking at where the helm and cloak had fallen – near to the already fallen body of his comrade Berganden. In the confusion and heat of the moment, it appeared to Thenamir that he had slain not only a fellow soldier, but one of his best friends. Shamed! Disgraced by the indiscretion of a blind rage!
Heart pounding a grim tempo, Thenamir began to race back to where his men were driving out the last of the fleeing enemies. But there was almost nothing left. Thenamir slumped to his knees and now gave full vent to the sobbing which had been shoved aside in the fighting. His wife was gone, his friend slain by his own hand, as it seemed. For him, there was nothing left. To admit his crime would have meant death – to hide it would mean shame eating away at him for the rest of his life. But there must be a reckoning. He would repay this foul breed, and whoever their master was. And to do that, he must live.
Thenamir picked himself up off the ground and ran, ran for his mount. Sharply seizing the reins he wheeled the horse around, and to the astonishment of his men, galloped away, heedless of their cries. Yes, he would pay – he would win back his lost honor. But he would do it in his own time.
He made his way to Rohan, but only after ceremonially burning his signs of rank and office. The helm he kept, after removing the wings, so that it was unadorned and black as the Dark Lord’s fell heart. He dressed himself as a mercenary, approaching the sentries of Rohan at their border and asking to join their ranks. The sentries were suspicious, but allowed him to speak to their captain.
Thenamir’s well-rehearsed story – that of a mercenary tired of fighting alone and looking for a cause and comrades with whom to defend it -- persuaded the eored chief, but being a leader of men he could in Thenamir’s eyes that there was something left unsaid, something both sad and angry. Still, his instincts told him Thenamir was trustworthy, and he proved himself well in both archery and swordsmanship against some of his men in a mock battle. He allowed Thenamir to join their troop on a temporary basis until Theodred or Erkenbrand could judge him more thoroughly, and determine a more permament placement.
Thus it was that Thenamir came into the ranks of the Rohirrim, and came to be in this place, shadowing these followers of Grima Wormtongue, these dark strange-looking men…

~-~-~

You may want to edit your backstory so that other players are unaware of it. This is some years before Eomer is old enought to be in charge of anything. Erkenbrand is old enough to be a leader of men in these days.
Because Taradan is a dark haired fellow, of like descent, there must be a bit of a rewrite to my last post to accomodate you.
~Gilthalion

~-~-~

Done -- Thenamir is now brown-haired, enough to be different from the Riders, but not to be confused with 'Blackie'.

I'm sorry I got so upset about this, everyone. It just really bothered me that my post was deleted. Maybe in the future, Gith, you could send it back with the suggestions about changing it. I hope I didn't dampen the experience for anyone else. And Gith, I'm sorry for being so touchy about it. I'm a very sensitive person, and tend to take everything to heart. Re: Sorry everyone
Not a problem. I've deleted the pertaining posts. Forgiven, forgotten.
I've thought about your suggestion to send back posts with an editorial critique. Unfortunately, when a game like this picks up steam, there's no time for that, since several folk may post in a single day.
If I can, I will simply edit the post and release it. If you want to save your writing, please make and save a copy before you post it. Then, if there are changes, you can consult your draft and see what was done.
Sometimes it's very little. Sometimes it's a lot. Sometimes it's unusable. I've taken the time to completely rewrite such posts and have then had to take still more time to deal with the individual. Our system works well, edit/delete & release.
I make changes for grammar mistakes that mar the reader's understanding. I don't pick up on all of them, sometimes I'm editing very swiftly.
I make changes if a player abuses or misuses another player's character.
I make changes for the sake of continuity, both within the story and with the greater Tolkein Legendarium.
If there is a good cause, I can revisit a decision, in which case, you'll want to have your saved draft ready.

Re: The Game in Progress; (storyline)
KALOHERN is obviously destined to become a hero at some point but not yet. (He needs to train his horse and he is hoping to be admitted to the ranks of the Riders) He is partly based on Beaumains from the Arthurian legend, except that he works in the stable, not the kitchen. Like his horse, his parentage may turn out to be more exalted than he believes. (more shades of Arthur) When Rohan is very hard pressed they may have need of a good rider so he can bide his time until a good opportunity presents itself.
TELEFAX (inspired by Alexander's Bucephalos, hence his derisory nickname) will improve with training until he realises his true potential; again he is being kept in readiness until Rohan's need is great. He can be identified by any knowledgeable horseman as being of the noble line of Meordas because he bears the Ermine mark; a small white spot on his right fetlock. (This is a real phenomenum in some modern thoroughbreds)
My idea for these two is for them to develop in the background, at the same time witnessing the main events of the story until the time comes for them to be "revealed".
GUTHRIN: I introduced him as a kind of "dastardly rotter" to cause problems for Kalohern and others due to his arrogance and snobbishness. He has no scruples and is secretly a coward and a cheat. He is obviously destined to meet a particularly nasty end after he has wreaked enough havoc. I have no objection to another player "adopting" him if anyone wants to. (Gee, thanks!)
DERNWINE has arrived at the camp bearing fell tidings; he is not my character so I don't know exactly what this is. (I only know that he left the others to return to the camp.) Maybe it's just the news of the "aliens", maybe he has learned something else in the meantime. (to be decided in accordance with other players' wishes)
The next move my characters make will depend on what the news is and how Theoden and Co. react to it!

Re: The Game in Progress; (storyline)
OK. That's about what I thought! I didn't see anything there that needed to be kept secret, so I've released it.
I may, however, make some minor changes, since at this point, there is NOT major news to report to Theoden, who is away from the camp near the Isen at this time. Dernwine will report to Erkenbrand instead.
Save the imagery of the played out steed for another more perilous moment!
Also, I have trimmed the ages of your young rider and horse back a year. It's time for both of them to have a good growth spurt! Neither will come into their full growth before the end of this adventure.
I propose that they secretly follow the next day to the concealment at the Fords. I'll take care that Dernwine have a reason not to send them away...

~~~
I don't want the story to go into too many directions at once. Right now, we have a team that is off to spy upon the strange men. We also have a storyline that is centered around the camp. That's enough for now.
Try to stick together, with one story or the other. I'll try to merge them at some point.
Re: The Game in Progress; (storyline)
Theodred21, I've released and trimmed your latest post. I tried to keep the flavor and the intent of it, but just wanted to tidy it up a little. Try to keep the NPC's in character (let's not let the Riders look too ridiculous after falling for a practical joke) and try not to do too much with an actual Player Character (other than your own). Otherwise, a fine post and I can't wait to see your plan.
Re: The Game in Progress; (storyline)
I deleted the last post, Theodred21, so that you can repost if you like. Our Riders, even the NPCs, are no cowards! There's no reason for you to hate Thenamir, unless that's the kind of guy Taradan is! (If so, go ahead...)
Good point about what the rest may do when they discover someone missing. Who knows what they'd do? Y'all talk it out and think it through!
The Plan
Theodred21, I hope I did not steal your thunder for the plan you were going to propose. I wrote the post before I saw your intimation of a plan and modified it slightly when I saw it, leaving it to Gil to determine whether to toss it or not.
Looking forward to hearing your plan as well!
I don't hate him, I think he is a bvery good writer, that's just the way Taradan is, very hard to befriend and suspicious.
My last post wasn't so great, probably because I had to write it in 5 minutes, because I have to go to bed! :D
Re: The Plan
Give it another try!
Basically, if you have anything to add too, or something better than Thenamir's plan, or if you can find a problem in the Riders idea, then those would be good to address right now.
I'll pull it back and rein it in if your rhetoric goes over the top! While you might look with suspicion upon Thenamir, or even give him a dirty look, hastily written posts before bedtime can come out a lot stronger!
But your instincts are good! Keep playing with the idea you have about your ongoing relationship with the other outlander.
The Two Riders?
Hey Gilthalion, I have a suggestion!
I don't think the two other riders with Taradan and Thenamir are going to be personified by anyone. Why don't you give them names and make them secondary characters. It would be better to say a name than "the taller rider" or "the shorter rider" all the time. If anyone later on wants to personify them they can, it's just that they will already have a name. Maybe some people haven't created a character yet, because they can't think of a good Rohirric name. That is why you should name the two blond riders! This is just a suggestion, so you don't have to listen to this, but I just want to bring it up so I don't have to say shorter rider all the time! :D
OK, I'd take Storwolos (from stór, probably Swedish or Lappian, meaning 'great' and wolos, the Slavonic Russian god of harvest), the Dúnlending captured by the riders. Any other information I'd work into the first posts, or along the way. Just give me a chance to response before you drag me away ;)
I made the last post, and I am now technically unconscious. Are my friends going to fight back and rescue me? Or will they not notice I am gone till they leave the scene, and I will have to wake up tied against a tree, with a throbbing headache or something. That is if the ruthless Dunlendings don't jump on me while I'm down and stab me in the back or something. What will be my fate? I wonder....
A Special Request
In the battle and mop-up that is to come, leave Borleg *alive* -- I want Borleg to be the one who killed Thenamir's wife and friend. Unless there is strenuous and purposeful objection, HE'S ALL MINE -- not just yet, but somewhere near the end. So Ulfwine and I can deal with him in a manner worthy of his cruelty.
It is possible that you could join the game at some point in the near future. You would never get your revenge, since we know what happens to Saruman. You could theoretically be another Dunlender, willing to help the Riders against Saruman, distrustful of his people's leadership being in cahoots with the White Hand, and also not caring for the orcish ones who run with them.
I anticipate that the Riders will be picking their way through Dunland soon, following the ones who Wormtongue has sent to find the elvish ruins. There should be an opportunity very soon for you to join them.
Greetings,
I would like to play in this game. I am new to rp so have pateince with me. Gilthalion feel free to throw me in where needed, also feel free to change you of my charachteristics as you see fit
Charachter:
Name: Dwalin Thunderhammer
Race: Dwarf (gee what a suprise)
Age: 35
Skills: Blacksmithing. Very skilled with an Axe
Weapons: Sharp Steel Axe forged by the charachter himself, sledgehammer.
Items: (all armor forged by the charachter) Steel chain coat, Small steel shield with a gold inlay of a hammer, Steel helm, Pipe for pipe weed, a horse with a small horse-cart filled with various supplies (food, water, tent etc.)
Background: Father Doren fought in the battle of five armies and earned the surname thunderhammer for his use of a hammer instead of a mattox or axe. Earned the surname of thunderhammer for similar behavior when he was ambushed by a group of orcs while crossing the misty mountains. Left his home in the lonely mountain to help fight the growing shadow in the east and maybe get some gold.
I don't know if these forums have died but it's worth a shot.
Well, it's not dead, it's just that the players have been busy lately. I wish I could post, but I can't really do anything while I'm unconcious. (Pity I knocked my self out...) smilies/mad.gif
I know I'm not a mod, but I guess you could except some constructive critism from another player. Isn't 35 a little too young for a dwarf? If this question seems too stupid for you, don't answer, because I ask alot of stupid questions. smilies/wink.gif
Dwarin Thunderhammer
09-27-2001, 11:04 AM
That's fine! I'll be an old dwarf. I really don't care. How about 75 or 100 is that better? That way I myself insted of my father could have fought in the battle of five armies. Please keep the criticism coming, like I said I am new to this, and as of yet I have only read the trilogy twice and the silmarillion once so I am not too framiliar with tolkiens world. I want to be the most helpfull and fun as can be.
Theodred21
09-27-2001, 01:29 PM
Actually 75-100 would be middle-aged for a dwarf, since they live 200+ years.
35 would be a young-un. smilies/biggrin.gif
Gilthalion
09-27-2001, 09:37 PM
Welcome! Sorry I've been out of pocket!
A dwarf that age might have fought in that battle, though he'd be very young at the time. Beardless almost!
We need a pretext for him to be in the area. If he smokes pipeweed, then he would have to have been one of the dwarves that passed on errands through the Shire.
During these days, it is possible that Balin and his dwarves are in Moria...
Perhaps Dwarin has come down the South road, from the Shire, and Tharbad, seeking a way to the West Gate of Moria, since messages from Balin had suddenly stopped, and no messengers sent through the East Gate ever returned...
If this appeals to you (keep in mind that it is a suicide mission separate from any adventure with this party) then you may meet up with this party a little later.
It otherwise doesn't make sense that a dwarf of the north is in the south to fight the menace to the east.
Dwarin Thunderhammer
09-27-2001, 11:53 PM
"Do I smoke pipe weed?" he said with a chuckle as he drew a rather ornate silver pipe from his right pocket. He filled his pipe from a leather pouch woth the words Hornblower and Longbottom stamped on it. "Only the finest." He replied as he puffed a smoke ring into the air.
_________________________________
I guess that settles why I am in the south smilies/biggrin.gif . Oh and by the way for continuity's sake since I participated in the battle of five armies let's make me a tad older huh? Maybe 110 or 125? One last question, (I know this might be the wrong pace to ask it) do dwarf babies and women have beards? I've never heard it totally settled.
Well, it looks like we all managed to survive the first skirmish.
The question is, now what? Several of us are wounded, and need some time to recover. It looks like heading back, at least temporarily, to Rohan, unless one of the new and yet-to-appear characters is a healer or a mage/wizard with some similar skill.
We really need to get some more characters into the mix -- Taradan and I are carrying most of the story so far. Good to see Kalohern in with the group. I want to see Kal get in some verbal barbs on the cowardly Gurthrin, and how Gurthrin will scheme to avoid being shamed upon their return.
Gil? Got any new revelations or things we need to know before we decide what's next?
Hey, I have an Idea. Could the "shorter rider" (I cant remember his name) actually be a woman in disguise? I made up a nice background story. Her real name could be Haleth. She became a soldier when her twin brother and parents died of a disease. She joined the army three years ago instead her brother and no one knows who she is. She is 5,10 and fights with a sword. Speaks the languages of Rohan and Gondor, and of course,Westron.
PLEEEEASE!?
I don't have any objection (the shorter rider is Baranthol) -- but of course Gilthalion has the final say.
HEY YOU GUYS!!! We have two, count'em TWO people who want in. (I guess technically, Dwarin Thunderhammer is *already* in) and those who haven't posted recently (you know who you are) need to carry the story forward, get these people going. Let's roll! There are enemies about!!
Uh, no wizard/mages! Elf you are! A couple of riders are wounded. They could use some elvish healing arts right about now. As for background, you may be a scout from Lothlorien (this stretches plausibility less than any where else). You might have been tracking some of these orcish fellows mingling with the Dunlenders...
When can I start writing. If the idea of crossdressing woman/warrior is worn out (I hope that it is not so) I have another idea. What about a guy in his 50's,Burzost, an ex Pyrat from Umbar and now a tradesman who owns a ship and exports weapons and food to Isengard and want's to inport pipe weed to Umbar. Burzost travels with some crew and a daughter. He is 6,3,red haired, green eyes and fights with a long wooden rod. His daughter, Avarrodel, is redhead, too but has her mother's grey eyes (her mom is actually a descendant from the house of Dol Amroth but ran away to marry the pyrat, she died when Avarrodel was still a baby)Avarrodel throws knives and uses a wooden rod, too (and does it bloody good).
They are traveling along the river Anduin, destination Isengard. The riders of Ridermark could attack the ship while it is tied down to the shore and try to confiscate the goods (or whatever). Then there is that dwarf who trades pipe-weed...
But I would still prefer the first character,Barathol the crossdresser. Which one should I choose and when should i start?
Other people could take Burzost and Avarrodel.
I can't choose, HELP ME!!!!!
Follis is an old beggar minstrel. Long gray gold hair and oily stained beard. Used to beg out side the gate of the golden hall. Now wanders the land of Rohan. Shunned by the people of Rohan because of rumors about him being an orc friend. Basicly a coward but when the fit seizes him does some heroic deed. When in a tight position usally feigns madness. Clothed in soiled brown rags. Carries seed rattle, some type of a lute thing, a small stone knife and a small bundle of nick-nacks. Follis the Mad to other beggars he cackles like a witch and his eyes usally blank burn with green fire when excited.
Can he join?
Personally, while Thenamir does not have any experience dealing with elves, and may half-believe the old-wives'-tales about Lothlorien, I think he would be a bit more diplomatic to a stranger, especially one offering help in a bind...and while he may be angry, he is seldom foolish...
Could you revise it to something like this:
[Thenamir spoke again "Master Elf, I *am* angry and weary, having too recently fought hard and come near to death. And if I seem foolish, as Taradan said, it is from being overcautious of recent danger. If you are of a mind to forgive rash and hasty words, I too will accept your assistance."]
Hey you guys! Nobody else find out the secret about Baranthol/Haleth now, ok? I'm sorry I started it, and three is way more than enough for this early in the story...I would edit my message if there hadn't already been progress, but there has, so let's leave it at this, ok?
Sheildmaiden I hope you aren;t mad at us for doing what we have done. I would be perfectly willing to edit my posts to say that I hadn't discovered the secret. I had considered writing myself discovering the secret earilier but I decided against it. I had written another post in the current vein but I deketed it once I saw this post. So onewhitetree if you want to I wouldn't mind editing/deleting my posts at all. I'm sorry once more shieldmaiden smilies/frown.gif . If we change it, I will revert my message to the previously okayed form: Aspida will befriend Haleth and kind of adopt her as the daughter she never had...in her own persnickety way, of course, and the secret will remain one-on-one. Sound good?
No no no I'm not mad at all!!!! I actually think that it makes the plot more interesting but we should leave it this way , two persons (not including Haleth) who know the secret are more than enough.We should just edit our posts so that the time between Dwarin's finding out who Haleth is and Haleth's finding out that Dwarin knows a little shorter. I just couldn't wait to use "I'll make harp strings from your bowels". I imagined Hal as that sort of character, after 3 years with the riders she got used to talking dirty. smilies/tongue.gif
Well, simply because the Dwarves are the best iorworkers in middle earth. Thingol asked us for our help in preparing Thangrodrim. Simply we are natural talented in such things. Similar to Elves and their mastery of archery. They have no need of such aromr because they try to fight from a distance. Dwarves are really up close and personal, so the thicker the armor the better.
Dwarin, you should make some changes in your post:
1.Put Gurthden instead od Guthrin, because Guthrin is a young coward and Gurthden os "the tall rider".
2. Guthrin was not among the wounded riders in the house because he was not wounded, he's a coward rmember and didn't fight. Try to get him in there somewhere, no one has used his character in a long time.
Well that's all. Don't get mad i'm just trying to help smilies/smile.gif
I will change the names immediately. As for working gurthin in, I am not sure how to do it. I thought of portraying him as a traitor who had allowed the duneldlenders to attack, (slacking off on guard duties, being bribed etc.) but I didn't put it in for various reasons (length being one). I would love to hear any suggestions you might have on the subject.
Thank you again!
smilies/biggrin.gif Guthrin? Well, maybe something like runs around and screams like a woman and accidently kills a Dunlending (some comic relief)when he falls on him (or whatever). He doesn't have to be that bad, he's just a spoiled bratt.
At least mention him or whatever, cause he hasn't been mentioned in quite a long time.
Poor Aspida!!!!!
I didn't think that she would die. I thought that her last words would have been something like "Get off my foot, you idiotic Dwarf" and then she pases out (just uncouncious). Her death really cought me by supprise.
Always leave them wanting more!
STATE OF THE RPG
Y'all are doing a fine job! This might make a tale!
Just to make sure: the Dunlendings that the dwarf attacked are NOT Storwolos and his band. This has to be a different group.
I think that the map and the jewels are a little much. I can see that the map might designate her own travels, as a companion to her diary. I expect that these would be more about locations of herbs and mushrooms and the like. This would be helpful to adventurers.
I do not see how such magnificent jewels would be in her possession.
There is a possibility that her diary tells of a love affair in her youth with a man of the west, perhaps one of the people of the rangers. His name is Pelador. Perhaps a jeweled brooch was given her, and this is what was found, rather than grand jewels that are the sort of thing one finds in a great treasure trove. Pelador dumped Aspida because of family pressure not to marry a Dunlending.
Could Ost-in-edhil be marked on the map?
I doubt it. Let's stick with the directions to find the Ranger's, please.
The map will certainly prove useful. The diary less so. The jeweled brooch (if Master Dwarf will make the change) is nice, but not of extraordinary value.
Perhaps, Master Dwarf, if you ever meet Pelador, you will have something to say to him, and a token to give him...
Dwarin Thunderhammer
12-20-2001, 03:14 AM
Sure Gilthalion, anything you say! A brooch it is. The dieary was not for usefulness, I just wanted to give shieldmaiden something to wrok with. Th main reason I wanted jewels was to have something to "remember" aspida by in the story, sort of like a pbanner (I had planned to set the ruby in the forehead of my helmet, the brooch will work great for Shieldmaiden, but I would like something also. Any suggestions?
12-20-2001, 03:58 PM
I think you're thinking of this a little like a D&D game. We want to create a plausible storyline with few wasted or unecessary elements. Each element introduced should have some purpose, weather in "play-by-play" or "color."
In other words, throttle back a little, and don't be in a hurry for fantastic jewels and great treasures or rememberances. We are building a story. Characterization is important. But let's show it in actions.
I think the Dwarf would keep the brooch as a remembrance. And then, should you meet this Ranger, you might make a nice little scene...
Gilthalion, I am not sure if insulted would be the right word for my reaction to yor latest post. More like, unpleasantly suprised. (None of this is meant in anger or deviciveness.) Gilthalion, for your enlightenment, I have never played D&D in fact I am quite against it. Other than C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of narnia, Tolkien is the only fantasy author I have ever read in my entire life.
My object is not to go on fantastical adventures and great battles, but as you have stated, to create a plausible storyline. Most everything I have written has been run past Kate or Thenamir. I am not a very experianced writer, this is probabaly the most fiction I have ever written.
I took great care to make sure the Attack post was not simply: "Dwarin killed one dunedling. Another one tried to attack him but he killed him too." I believe it's just a difference in writing styles. I tend to try to move things along, infuse emotion et cetera. I am just not a fully matured writer yet. Like I have said before I am very appreciateive of any criticism, including this piece, it makes me a better writer. I just don't want you to think I am a D&D nut who likes magical swords and talking rocks. Please forgive me if this post seems angry or upset (neither of which it is).
Gilthalion is the one who normally makes the decisions and helps with new characters.
In the meantime, if you have an idea for a character and want to make a post, go for it. Posts are reviewed and edited by Gilthalion as soon as his schedule permits, so don't worry about making mistakes -- we can always revise the posts as we go along.
You can find a good primer on writing for the RPG's here in the Roleplaying Rules thread, which you can read by clicking here. (http://www.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=13&t=000003)
So jump in! If you screw up we'll be sure to let you know about it!
Serevian: what is the nature of your "magical sword"? Tolkien was not big on flashy magic items. Keep it simple and something less than "utter invincibility", please. smilies/biggrin.gif Other than that, it looks like a good character. Try to come up with some backstory to explain why he is so far from Bree, and a plausible reason why he might join up with out pursuit of the Dunlendings. Go for it!
Tanmarion, you might want to consider being one of the characters who is not being played at the moment, like Elwood of Lorien himself. The person who played Elwood has dropped out for some reason. Why don't you read the story and see if you can take him over.
Prince of Dol Amroth, see if you might want to take over one of the characters not already taken, like Guthrin (the chicken-hearted), Gurthden, or perhaps one of the Riders who came in as reinforcements during the first battle. Read the story and see what you think.
Or perhaps either or both of you could be one of the Dunlendings themselves in the party being led by Storwolos.
These are just my ideas, and I'm not in charge here, but give them some thought. It would be more difficult, I think, to try to introduce new characters at this point. See what you think!
I am more than pleased with the way things are going, and sorry my schedule has not allowed me to keep up. Thenamir has really been doing a great job in my absence.
Dwarin: Good writing! You are doing well. Please forgive my tone, if you were at all offended.
There are problems with Rivendell Elves (or the Dunedain for that matter) knowing too much of Saruman's designs. No one on the White Council knows of his treachery until Gandalf is imprisoned (years from the time of our tale).
Keeping that in mind, let's write on with the understanding that we don't want our story to create problems with the "real" story!
Gilthalion
01-02-2002, 11:12 AM
Just got back from reading the latest posts.
Hope no one gets mad, but I've had to delete a couple of them.
Tanmarion: the name of the elf is ELWOOD. He was with Thenamir when they were spying on Storwolos' Dunlenders.
Prince of Dol Amroth: sorry, but we won't have any rangers involved to a great extent in this story. There may be a ranger or two later, if the party takes the South Road to Tharbad as they seek the elvish ruins, but not here and now in Dunland.
The White Council can NOT become aware of the treachery of Saruman as a result of this story. A letter to Lothlorien, or intelligence gathered by the Rangers, or a herald from Rivendell would surely spill the beans.
At this time, Isengard is home to Saruman the White, the leader of the White Council and head of the order of Wizards. It is filled with trees and birds and is not yet teaming with orcs and wolves and half orcs. Only Rohan is aware that something is wrong on their border and this is the first inkling that ANYONE has that Saruman is involved.
There will be heroics and adventure, perhaps you will even thwart Saruman's latest scheme. Don't count on it.
If only one of you returns alive to bring word back to Theodred, you can count that a great victory.
You are all meddling in the affairs of the most powerful wizard in Middle-earth. He is more subtle and quick to anger than any other! You are, furthermore, far from any help, and seeking the lost ruins of an elvish city, hoping to follow a cunning warrior and his band of wild Dunlenders through the wilderness.
Do they know where they are going? Can you follow them? If you lose them, can you find them?
And what happens if you do?
Hello Newfolk!
I don't see a party of Mirkwood elves in Dunland. These elves were not great travelers.
A Wandering Company would be more likely, though not in Dunland. Children of the Noldor on an excursion to ancient Hollin, perhaps. You would meet the Party, if at all, in the wilderness east of the Old South Road prior to the discovery of Ost-in-edhil.
Absolutely no Valar Player Characters.
Leighlei
01-12-2002, 08:23 PM
Hello? Were you replying to me? I don't understand things... So you're saying I can or cannot play an elf? Not from Mirkwood, right? I'm sorry, I'm very dense... -_- Don't hate me!
Dwarin Thunderhammer
01-13-2002, 02:33 AM
Yes leghlei he was replying to you. Don't worry about not understanding, it's no big deal. The Noldor were one of the original lines of the elves that were scattered for the most part by morgoth. So yes you can play an elf.
However, at this point I feel I must make an argument (for lack of a better term) that has been runing around my head. Why all the elves? Firt of all, It seems to me that elves in this story would be a bit out of place. This is a story about Rohan, not exactly elf territory. This is a story about Men struggling against isengard. I'm even beegining to reget the introduction of a Dwarf.
Second of all it causes conflicts in the books. the elves remained hidden. When they were outside of their realms they made a marked effort not to be noticed, so I seriously doubt they would reveal themselves lightly. Also, as Gil as stated before, they would spill the beans about Saruman. If any mirkwood/lorien elves survive the story then that causes a problem. So, as I see it at least, all of the elves including Elwood and maybe even dwarin would have to bite the dust before the end (though I think dwarves would give it away less).
Lastly, why pick elves? There are penty of other races in middle earth to be. Dwarves, Men, Hobbits, Ents even! May I remind you that the elves were not a superior race, they had their advantages and disadvantages. The dwarves were Spesifically made by Aule to withstand the evils of morgoth. Yavanna made the Ents, and I think you know what they did to the orcs at helms deep. What of hobbits? A hobbit accomplished what is (arguably) the greatest deed ever, the destruction of The One Ring, nuff said. Men are by far not the least on the list. Most of the great deeds of ages were done by men, the slaying of glaurung, the tale of Beren and Luthien, Isuldur cutting the ring from sauron's finger. Do not downplay the part the race of men played in the history of middle earth. Elves are not perfect either. Feanors rebellious spirit almost estroyed the noldor. Thingol's greed led to the downfall of beleriand. What about the war of unnumbered tears that was certantly a mistake.
I hope I have made my argument, clearly, consicely and non-offensive. Leighlei, your presence is most welcome and! Stay long and post often and I hope I have convinced you to come over to the non-elf camp. If you want there are currently plenty of npc's that are ripe for the picking. That goes for everyone.
Leighlei
^^ I see your point, and I agree completely for two reasons
A) My character is only half-elf and
B) Elves are rather boring creatures who tend not to be struck by life-threatening dramas.
My character is Half-elf half human (Aragorn and Arwen's daughter) and posseses only the physical features of an elf, and not immortality or immunity to disease.
Ill explain;
Her father raised her as a warrior to fight for her people should the need arise, but her mother prevented it. ((Mixed int here was a big thing about marrying Legolas but I'm cutting it out in the RPG for the sake of...well, not being a newb.)) So she cuts her hair off to just below her jaw, disquises herself and basically runs away.
** Note: This is only the char for the RPG...My real char does some things slightly different, but I butchered her story for the RPG so she would have a bit more choice. WHen the fanfiction comes out, you'll understandf ~^
BTW- How do you change thte name that everyone sees (no tthe login name, the veiwable one)
Leighlei, your character can't be Aragorn's and Arwen's daughter since this RPG is setled before the war of the ring.
There are some other characters that aren't used by anyone and they are well developed. Those are:
Gurthden- a Rohirrim ridier,brave.(Ripe for picking as Dwarin says)
Guthrin-a Rohirrim rider but a coward and a son of a rich VIP
There are also two other riders wich still don't have names and haven't been mentioned much since they were wounded.
Ulfwine-a young Dunlending who joined the riders
Btw, what about Kalohern, he hasn't posted for a long time?
Nah, im only kidding, u guys have every right 2 have the same ideas as me (it just seems so unfair!) smilies/wink.gif
My original idea was 2 play an elf that had been banished from northern mirkwood, because he killed another elf in self defence (i can turn this into a storyif u guys want 2 no more). The fact that he had been banished would account for the reason he is wandering around. after he was banished, he decided 2 find his one friend that was not from his home in mirkwood, dwarin the dwarf, who he fought beside in the battle of the five armies. so he goes 2 erebor, 2 find that he has gone 2 rohan, and from there he tracks the dwarf, and then he tracks the company which the dwarf joins. when he catches up on them, he keeps himself hidden until the company gets ambushed by dunlanders.he paticipates in the battle, and reveals himself 2 the company afterwards.
im not sure if this would work now that we have 2 other people wanting 2 b elves. if this character is not possible 2 work in, i would b quite happy 2 do this wandering party of noldor elves, or b a man with a similar storyline 2 the elf (but the the battle of the 5 armies of course), or even another rider of the mark, but i would prefer 2 b an elf from mirkwood. i concede dwarins’s point about elves not being the best race or nething, but i dont want 2 b an elf cos elves r the best, i want 2 b an elf cos it suits my personality (well i hope it does neway) and i like the weapons they use, and the grace with which they go about there lives. I am sure there is nothing wrong with dwarves or men, dwarin, but elves r more like me, if u get what i mean.
lastly, id like 2 say im very sorry 4 posting such a long post, and say thanx 2 dwarin, sheildmaiden and gilathion 4 the advice.
Thank you smilies/biggrin.gif
leighlei, when i sed copy, i meant copy and paste using the computer (but im sure u r smart enough 2 have figured that 1 out)
and lastly (yes, this is trully the last statement!), the fact that my elf (whos name is rinurion, in case ne1 wanted 2 no) is an out cast from his people means that he wont go blabbing about the trechery of saruman 2 ne1.
It's still mighty hard to see Mirkwood elves in Dunland!
Now if there is enough interest, we can simply start another Rhovanion RPG, this time in Mirkwood. If we have a lot of folk who want to play Mirkwood elves, then I would rather start a new storyline than bend this one anymore than we have.
How about it? Do we have interest enough to sustain a Mirkwood RPG?
I have had to delete a post in which a person simply picked up the story, writing for other players, and not introducing or writing for a player for himself/herself.
Please only write for your own character, adding in responses and the like from other characters as little as possible.
You will see me write a post in which I try to handle player characters in a manner consistant with the way the players have written them. I am doing this to direct the tale along certain lines. (There actually is a plot to this that will make a story when we are done. I have no idea what you all will do along the way, but there are some things that are going to happen to make this a good tale! Already there is a lot of action and colour!) I also edit posts for continuity, excessive graphic detail, excessive spelling or grammatical errors, or just to remove things that don't fit.
I look forward to the story continuing to the lost ruins...
I'm not objecting to your charachter, I just think the position might be filled. Personally, I've had the majority of posts for quite awhile, and I didn't see the need for me to respond right away. To everyone, especially the newcomers:
I am *very* sorry I have not been writing and posting as much as before. I am starting a new business that is growing faster than my expectations -- until I get a handle on things, my posts will be fewer, but I am still reading, and I like what I've seen. I will try to post by this weekend. Can't have a good battle without Aranbold, my sword! Let me at 'em!
In the meantime -- if you have a post and can carry on the story, don't wait for me! I don't mind people writing my character a little, as long as they read what I have written before and try to keep my character, well, "in character".
SOME GENERAL NOTES ABOUT WRITING!
If you have a word processor, try writing your post in that, and take full advantage of the SPELLCHECK and the GRAMMAR CHECK!!! Then copy and paste the text to your post.
You don't have to make every change the wordprocessor suggests, but it will catch a lot of basic errors that I'm seeing.
Regarding style: Don't try to make everything an epic event!
WRONG:
Granduer the Wizard's bristling brows thrust dauntingly at little Bulbo and the red-clad conjurer cried out in a voice like rolling thunder, "I'll have two teaspoons of sugar, thank you! NO CREAM!!! IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, NO CREAM!!!!"
With a trembling hand, the frightened halfling spooned the sweetener into the cup of tea, each crystal falling with a mighty splash into the steaming brew. He was so nervous that his teeth were knocked to shards and flinders, they chattered so. Bulbo looked up with a bleeding mouth and dread filling his tiny heart, for the wizard seemed on the verge of a cyclonic sneeze that would surely blast him right through his freshly painted front door!
RIGHT:
Grandeur said, "A little sugar thank you, no cream for me."
Bulbo gladly poured the wizard's tea, but he was a little nervous and almost spilled it on the conjurer's fine red robes. But the wizard was too busy stifling another of his enormous sneezes to notice the timid hobbit at all.
Well, you get the idea!
If anyone wants to get in a quick post, do it before I bring on the wolves!
Thanks Rinurion. Glad someone likes my poor prose. And I do not put any 'twists' in the story that Gil does not approve -- I just write 'em, and he edits 'em to suit the needs of the story. He is the mover and the shaker in this RPG.
And I will second Rinurion's sentiments about Gil -- good work, thanks for the effort, and keep it it up! Things are getting interesting!
But anyway, i have come up with an idea to stall the dunelings...
It involves faking a message from saruman... a risky business, but one that has the possibility of stalling the dunelings for a small period of time.
We get kaloherns horse, and a member of our party that the dunelings have not encountered, and give the dunelings a message to turn back, while going for the ruined city. That should at least catch us up. I know that this will need some complicating, but ill leave that to people who would do it better than me smilies/smile.gif. Well, theres the bare bones... as soon as i get some feedback ill start working on the post. Well, no one can say I'm not doing *my* part...I'm doing my part (Thenamir) plus three others at the moment (four if you count my standing in for Taradan...)
Gilthalion, I have a new respect for the troubles you are going thru, but can you spare us just a wee bit of time to update and carry us forward? Thanks!
Mine is a lonely vigil...
Every day I come to the Rohan RPG and seek signs of life, but the body lies there on the crisp white sheets, unmoving and unconscious. I check the heart-lung machine to make sure it is well oiled and properly maintained, whirring and clicking thru the long days and lonely nights. Occasionally I charge up the electric paddles and jolt the RPG to see if the heart will begin to beat on it's own apart from the machine, to no avail.
Still I sit by the PC and check the RPG every day, hoping against hope that Gilthlaion will provide the miracle cure, that once he does everything will be OK...
Mine is a lonely vigil...
After discussion with Thenamir, I offered to try and move the story on and so I have written what appears to be a very long post. I have tried to keep all true to what was said before and yet move the story forwards. I am new to the thread and if people wish for me to remove my post or it offends participants in any way, I shall do so. If not, I hope you like it!
Gilthalion, likewise, if this was not the way you intended the story to go , I will be happy to amend.
Edit:
Also, I know I have twisted the rules a little by writing in other people's characters but I've kept it simple and all have acted in suitably heroic fashion!
Re Guthrin: - if you read the post you'll see I'll be playing him for now on. aAs I hope I made apparent, he is a man with a stranger past than it seemed at first. The idea for using him is simply that old chestnut that "the least turns out to do the most", or something close to that.
Re Storwolos and Smrtan: Troublesome me, meddling with characters thus! I see Smrtan as a direct swap for Storwolos, the idea for the change in leadership came to me after a saw the direction your earlier posts were taking. Hopefully it will revitalise that side of affairs.
A hypothetical interim direction:
I left it with the party scattered. The way I saw it is that both parties will make for the deserted City at pace...both will be delayed. Taradan/Thenamir's group by a stop for rest and recuperation that lasts a few days: good opportunity for some conversation / character building/ explanation of Guthrin amongst other items. The Dunedlings should be delayed by other means.
As classified, this is mere speculation and you are welcome to ignore. My motivation is simple; to re-ignite this pleasant RPG.
This was great Rimbaud, I liked it. You fit in the game perfectly.
But there is one thing, Thenamir didn't have a horse since all our horses but Telefax and Nim were killed by wargs.
Thanx Thena for taking time to persuade him to play. I have little time now but I'll post tomorrow.
Hurrah, the game is saved!!!
You can write your character's history here in this thread and wait for Gilthalion to approve it. Since Gil is busy and doesn't come here often maybe all the participants could say whether they think your character fits or not.
We have a problem of having too many characters without "owners" because they don't visit the site any more. Read the whole story and pick one. There's plenty to choose from: Kalohern, Ulfwine, a Dunlender, Leoden and Taradan.
Hi Ransom and welcome aboard.
I'm not exactly the moderator of this RPG, but I'm sorta trying to keep it together until the real moderator gets back to us -- he's dealing with several crises large and small, and is unable to spend much online time.
In the meantime, you can write for any of the characters Shieldmaiden mentioned (Taradan will probably be the most interesting, but the others are good too), *OR* you can write for one of the Ranger characters we sre getting ready to find to our north.
To the rest -- sorry, I have been swamped. I promise a post before the end of the weekend. (including Monday, which is a holiday for us Americans...)
In the meantime, great new posts, everyone! Glad to see some life coming to the RPG again! Rimbaud -- excellent addition to the storyline, although to you and everyone else I say, if you are going to take the RPOG in a *radically* new direction (as Rimbaud has, though with great effect), make sure to clear it with me or Gilthalion before you post -- this RPG is not "free-form", it is being carried in a particular direction, and rewriting the RPG out of an awkward direction is difficult. If in doubt, ask.
To the North!
P.S. Rimbaud, Ulfwine is not of the Dunedain (the Rangers, like Aragorn), he is a Dunlending. Other than that, Great Post!
Ok.
#1: Thank you for your responses. I look foward to RPing with you. smilies/smile.gif
#2: I think I shall be one of the Dunedain. I'm assuming they had a few members who were equiped as light, or even heavy calvery, due to their role in the raising of the Siege of Gondor. Here's my attempt to recreate one of the heavier armed Dunedain. Do inform me if I went overboard, or if I was incorrect with my thoughts on the Dunedain
Name: Volkmar Heidenhammer
Age: 30
Height: 6'4"
Eye color: Brown
Hair colour:Black. Shoulder length.
Physical Desciption: Volkmar Heidenhammer loved the winter. He lazily brushed a stray strand of hair away from his dark brown eyes. His skin was barely tanned, a unusual traight for one who had travelled for so long. No one who knew him well would descibe him as strong. Instead most would use the term 'tough' or 'hardy'.
Weapons: Warhammer Whistling Death, double handed bastard sword Ancalagon, calvary spear
Armor: Metal gauntlets. Mail shirt reinforced with metal plates. (E.g. leg grieves, chest plage, etc.) Left leg is fully armored. The armor serves as a brace, for the left leg was badly mauled by a Warg.
Various other items: Cooking utensels, bedroll, extra cloathing, walking stick, rope, tinderbox, shortbow (only for hunting, Volkmar can't shoot well enough to use it in battle).
Personality: Trained from youth to fight, Volkmar Heidenhammer went through the ususal motions of learning, never considering the cause of the fight. This all changed when he was twenty. His party of rangers were ambushed in the mountains by orcs. Half their number were killed and three more were badly wounded. Volkmar was one of these. A week later, he was the only survivor to stumble into the hands of the Beornings.
His physical wounds healed, abet slowly, save for the mauled leg. However, his body still aches like an old man's through bad weather and physical exertion. At first, the Beornings believed him dead. A year later, Volkmar returned to his breathern, his entire viewpoint changed. Fighting became more than sport, for he was now desperate that no more of his friends would die at the hands of the hated orks.
He taught himself the use of the warhammer, all the while forging a brace for his broken and half-healed leg. Escewing the ambushing tactics used by some of his comrades, he sought open conflict far more often.
Present situation: The rangers have heard of the march of the Dunlendings, and suspect some negative influence, or perhaps agents of the Dark Lord. However, their ranks have been spread thin in guarding the shire, and not many could be rased to investigate. Volkmer gladly took the asignment, viewing it as a distinct change from dealing with hobbits. So, one morning, he rode set out for the land of Rohan with his horse, intent on fulfiling his mission and looking foward to another change in his life.
#3 Not sure where I should come in....I'll wait for Thenamir to complete his post.
[ August 30, 2002: Message edited by: Ransom ]
On second thought, I think Volkmer may be a little overpowered. Some restrictions/disabilities:
Broken left leg: Volkmer's left leg did not heal right. Despite the brace, he still walks with a limp. Runing is much harder and more painful.
Scars: Though Volkmer has mostly healed, scar tissue and broken bones still bother him. Weather causes extreme pain. Physical exertian may cause pain.
Unstable: Two weeks of constant fighting and bleeding had left Volkmer emotionally broken. With the help of some of his comrades, he has learned to cope. However, he's a bit paranoid, and often needs to cope with deja'vu and nightmares. In additian, if he sees any comrades badly injured or (Valor forbid) killed, he will go insane, smiting his foes reguardless of tactics or safety. Afterwards, he's prone to depression.
Greetings Shieldmaiden,
*stops for a moment, hesitantly and even bashfully, wondering if it is appropriate to speak up here and intrude on this discussion*
We have not met on the Downs, and for that reason I am not sure I should say anything, but this comment of yours caught my attention:
It seems that she hasn't read the rpg at all. Maybe that kind of posts can fit into one of those freestyle rpg's but we have been working on this for months.
I am someone who posts in the Freestyle forum because I thought all the moderated RPGs were full and not accepting new writers. I would respectfully wish to say that I cringe at this statement. There certainly are slovenly, thoughtless posts lacking any Middle Earth integrity in the Freestyle room, but there are also are well-run, thoughtfully-plotted RPGs which are Tolkien-friendly and Tolkien-faithful.
*clears throat a little now at her audacity*
Please don't tar us all with the same brush. There are several of us down there on the southside of the RPG forum who would not accept that kind of intrusion, either.
Respecfully,
I hesitate to speak for others, but the "intrusion" of people into RPGs without permission or direction is one of the reasons that Barrow Wight and the other Forum Moderators are coming up with a set of guidelines for starting and running an RPG on these forums(fora?), to keep things from getting away from the intentions of the ones who start the ideas.
In my personal and humble opinion, I think the Rohan RPG has some of the highest quality fiction writing anywhere on the Downs (though I would think no less of anyone who might disagree). And it is so mainly because we have a good moderator (Gilthalion) who keeps us on-track within the bounds of an overview storyline. The mod is free to edit (or to delete entirely) any post he sees fit to keep that storyline intact, and communicates freely with the players so that no one's toes get stepped on.
I'd like to think that the Rohan RPG (and the Eriador RPG before it) can be taken as a model framework for better RPGs that make more interesting reading to an outsider. That does not mean that there aren't better ways of running an RPG here, and if so, please feel free to reply and point one out to me. I have so far avoided the Freestyle Room, not so much because I feel the writing or direction is poor, but because my time is so limited -- it is almost too much for me to post to Rohan regularly. So if you feel that there is a particular RPG in the Freestyle area that is of special merit, let me know about it.
I don't think you can just say on the whim of a moment, as is so often said in the Downs Chat Room, "Hey, anyone want to RP?" and expect it to be an instant masterpiece. Conceiving and running an RPG is work, sometimes a LOT of work. The ones who so cavalierly want to get a group together and just "wing it" don't seem ready or willing to put in that level of effort to make it a *good* RPG, one with purpose, direction, and clarity.
Anyway, I'll get off the old soapbox now. Flamers, fire at will.
Civil Greetings Thenamir,
You did not address your post specifically to me, but I suspect that you posted in response to my query of Shieldmaiden. I know what it is like to feel intense pride and ownership of an RPG and to have it rudely interrupted by unwanted guests, but I thought, first, that discussion threads were open to discussion from all, and, second, that I had posted respectfully and could not be accused of flaming or rudely intruding on this thread. It appears, however, that you have become defensive anyway. My apologies.
My query did not question the right of anyone in your RPG to restrict access to frivolous intrusions. Nor did it defend that frivolous post by any means. Far from it. All I tried to do was point out that some of us toiling south of the track do not deserve to be dismissed as frivolous writers.
I thank you for stating that it is lack of time which keeps you out of the Freestyle Room, but I would also respectfully point out that your last paragraph tends still to dismiss everyone in the Freestyle room as frivolous chat monkeys who post RPGs on a whim. While this is a true description of the flighty RPGs, it nonetheless contains an unfair and unwarranted assumption that all Freestyle RPGs are unplanned and cavalierly written.
So if you feel that there is a particular RPG in the Freestyle area that is of special merit, let me know about it.
I invite you to read Gandalf the Grey's "On Patrol" and Birdland's "The Gathering-In". "On Patrol" in particular will demonstrate how Gandalf has run a freestyle RPG, since it has run the longest. I also invite you to consider my thread, "Resources for RPGs", the title of which originally was "Resources for Substantial, Interactive, Tolkien-faithful RPGs." (That title drew flack, as you will see.) And I am fully aware of the need for the new policies in the Freestyle room. Please see my comments on Elenna's "A plea from your moderator" and on Mr. Underhill's thread to discuss the new policies.
I was not in any way attacking your RPG here, and neither denying nor denigrating the excellent work of yourself and Gilthalion as moderators. I was merely suggesting that not all of us in the Freestyle room belong to the great unwashed and I would ask that you accord our work there the respect which you quite rightly expect for your work here.
*hands soapbox back to Thenamir* It was a little too high for me, so I used my own podium. smilies/wink.gif
Respectfully,
Bethberry
Mea Culpa! Wow.
I thought, first, discussion threads were open to discussion from all
I did not say, nor did I mean to imply, that your post was unwelcome on our discussion thread. On the contrary, suggestions are always welcome, and while the discussion thread for a particular RPG is usually dedicated to discussions of what is happening (or is *about* to happen) in that particular RPG, as long as the post has bearing on that RPG, it is not going to be dismissed or deleted.
I thought...second, that I had posted respectfully and could not be accused of flaming or rudely intruding on this thread
You were indeed most respectful, and anything I said that might have implied otherwise was entirely unintended. My "flamers" comment was not directed to you, but to others who do indeed try to "wing it" from the chat-room, and who get mad at me as a chat-moderator for stopping them from RP in the chat. If they want to create a separate chat-room for RP, that is fine, but the chat is for general discussions (sometimes Tolkien, sometimes not) and at BW's behest, I do not allow RP in the chat.
your last paragraph tends still to dismiss everyone in the Freestyle room as frivolous chat monkeys who post RPGs on a whim.
And yet I freely request that if there are quality RPGs in the Freestyle Room, that someone point them out (which you did, thank you). Mithadan, one of the Forum Moderators, himself pointed out to the other Mods that there were a few worthwhile RP threads in Freestyle -- but he has time to read them all and sort them out. I don't, and I don't apologize for that fact.
I did NOT say that there is *nothing* good in the Freestyle Room. Having not read the room much, such a statement would be entirely presumption.
I did NOT say that all the RPG's there are "flighty", for the same reason.
I DID say, and repeat and clarify here, that if someone wants to create a quality RPG, it takes much more than 5 people who'd like to pretend they're elves, orcs, or hobbits.
And I DO say for-the-record that if there exists a well-written RPG that would be interesting to someone other than just the players, that was started by someone merely saying "Let's RP!" on the chat room, then I want to see it -- the last time a miracle of that magnitude occurred, 3 wise men came out of the east following a star.
If I have sounded defensive, it was unintentional. I was not defensive, but annoyed. I see now that my annoyance was not justified in your case. Please remember that I have to deal with all manner of immature imbeciles, starstruck droolers, and Tolkien-wannabees in the chat, and try to sort them out from the quality people who are there to socialize, mingle, and talk Tolkien when the mood strikes them.
Thanks for the recommendations for the Freestyle Room. I'll check them out when I have a moment. And by the way, while we did close the Rohan RP to new people sometime back, we have lost some of the people who used to post regularly. As a result, we have a number of Non-player characters who could use a good writer. If you are interested, please let me know!
Thenamir,
In my experience, I have found that crow can be made somewhat palatible by large infusions of red wine, followed by cinnamon, cloves, sugar, several varieties of mushrooms, and a healthy amount of taters. Some might also choose neeps and carrots, but not I. smilies/wink.gif
Should you ever find the time, you might also want to check out "The Lonely Star" which Mithadan writes for, along with Child, pio, Birdland, and others. I have not read all of it, but it certainly stands far above the rest of the Freestyle Room.
You are generous and gracious in asking if I am interested in writing for you and I thank you for that. Let me read through all the thread first! I also need to get my character established at "The Gathering", participate in the winding down of "On Patrol", and get to that stack of fanfic to edit for the Barrow Wight before he sees to it that I am doubly dead. *grin*
Moderating in the midst of barbarian hoards (I exaggerate tonight, for the wine was mellow) is a challenging trial. Thank you for remembering that mustard seeds can bloom in the most unlikely of places. I hope we can continue our acquaintance.
I have a proposition for BW Gil and those who have been faithfull in writing for the rohan RPG.
I enjoyed reading the Bree RPG very much and I thought it had a good premise and some very god writers. It's lifeless body has laid under the title of the Eriador rpg for almost a year now. I propose that we bring it back to life. Once the Rohan RPG is done I would like to see some of us that have written for it take up the banner of Bree. Just as Feanaro resurrected Mordor so would I like to resurrect Bree the father of the Barrowdowns RPG's. I would be willing to moderate it if need be, but I would rather have Thenamir or Gilthalion moderate because their skills far exceed mine. Thank you BW, Gil and Thenamir for your consideration.
Actually rimbaud I was rather playing elwood but If you want him you can have him. I think a better choice for you to play in addition to Guthrin would be Gurthden (I know it's confusing) Gurthden is one of the original four riders (Taradan Flandhere Gurthden and Leoden). Gurthden has proved himself to be a good soldier, valiant etc. etc. However I think an even better choice would be Taradan, he's been rather neglected, he was even at one point the leader of our little expedition.
I was acutally heading over here to post for elwood and gurthden so please let me know before you post.
As agreed in chat, D, I'll do Elwood and Guthrin, you do Dwarin and Kalohern. Esty will be Taradan when she catches up with the thread. We'll keep an eye on Gurthden and Leoden between us all...Thenamir, shieldmaiden, Areina and GreatWarg all seem pretty self-explanatory.
Someone for Ulfwine, our turncoat?
Direction, Thena?
Other writers welcome, obviously!!!
(Should any of the original writers return, feel free to assume your character again, although a post here would be great!)
