Arien and Maikafanawen invite you to play:
Title: The Fall of Greenwood the Great
Basic Storyline: It is the year 1052 TA (Third Age), two years after the Necromancer (who will later be known to have been Sauron) entered Greenwood the Great. Slowly darkness and evil have been flowing throughout the mighty forest and rumours have reached the Elven Kings halls that malicious and vile creatures are lurking in the newly made shadows. Less and less people are traveling through the forest and Elven scouts have been disappearing more and more. Now the Elven kingdom is almost cut off from any outside contact and is isolated. Thranduil has decided to send out a party of nine well trained and skilled Elves to see what has happened to his once great realm.
Note: All gamers must refer to Mirkwood as Greenwood as it has not been named Mirkwood yet. And the Elves are referred to as Woodland Elves.

Arien’s post
Prolog
The greatest forest in Middle Earth stood fair and tall. The breeze gently rustled her delicate leaves that draped down from her mighty trees. And all was silent, still. The sun bathed her in its never ending light, caressing the rolling midnight canopy. And below on the floor she hid away secrets of beauty, And all was calm, good. Years past in an instance and she never waxed nor waned, but held her grace.
Many people past dwelt within her, but none so as the Elves. And within her northern realm they lived. It was filled with immense wonder, for it was crafted in the image of the diminished realm of Menegeroth- once the most beautiful place upon Middle Earth. And all was peaceful, alluring. Time still fleeted past and she lost nothing but remained.
But one day a shadow of evil entered the south. Twisted forms marred her trees and killed her animals. And she wept. Then he came…….And from that day forth her beauty was no more. Slowly his evil spread and reached the Elves. And they in turn closed their doors to the world. And from then on she was Mirkwood.
This is the story of how the evil was found, some died and some lived but he was too strong. The fought but with their failure the doors of their hall were closed.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
“You do know that it is growing. Less and less peoples enter here and trade has fallen…..”
Ceros leaned against one of the great trees and breathed into the blackened night. It had been nearly a year now and he had noticed the changes in the forest. A year since the rumours started. A year since a shadow fell like a shroud of misery. No longer did the birds sing their songs of wonder in the south, and no longer did the beasts roam the pleasurable clearings, but lay hid amidst the newly formed darkness. Others had noticed the change too, felt it in the air, the ground, the water. But they were too afraid to speak up, troubled of being accused of being paranoid. For in this world things of shadow would always be. But this was no paranoia, no it was real and Greenwood no longer held herself as she once did.
“Yes I do know…” replied a voice in the night, “But what to do?” Orodhin stepped forward into the light of their small fire, so Ceros could see him. “But what to do?”
“At least try to fight it!” breathed Ceros deeply. He loved Greenwood with a deep passion and hated it that nothing was being done to counter the threat. The invisible threat as some had grown to call it.
The two were on guard duty tonight, protecting the southern road from any intruders, or unwanted guests. Everyone knew there was no real point in guarding it for no one had come from the south for over a year now, and they weren’t going to start now. Plus the rumour of the shadow had put off guards from patrolling these areas, and Cersos and Orodhin were two of the few who would do it. An eerie silence hung thick in the air, and nothing but the two Elves were there.
“We don’t even know what we are up against, how could we fight it?” Orodhin replied staring up into the canopy, “There are rumours,” he sighed, “Rumours of a great evil!”
“I have heard them too…….” Ceros looked down the Elven path, “that is why we have to do something….now…bu…”
“Shh,” Orodhin drew his sword and fell back into the darkness. Ceros had heard it to and silently stepped backwards into shadow. The noise was clear and crisp in the silence, the crackling of leaves underfoot was amplified in the stillness. As the thing drew closer Ceros tightened his grip, but as two figures drew into the fire light his heart jumped.
“Talas, Ranude!” cried Orodhin stepping out from his veil of darkness, Ceros too revealed himself.
“We have come to relieve you, but you are lucky someone came, many were reluctant to…”
“Thank you, goodnight ,” Ceros said and he and Orodhin made their way back to the Halls and left the other two to guard the halls.
Blessed by the Valar were the lives of Ceros and Orodhin, for neither Talas nor Renude were ever seen again, this is what drew the meeting together and this is where our journey starts.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Four months later a meeting was called:
To all the Elves of this Realm, the time has come to call into question the Shadow . . .
When Ceros had first heard the notice he had snorted, as if this was just another gathering to deal with rogue spiders or unwanted trespassers. But as the Council grew closer, realization hit him. This was serious, the heads of the guards were attending, along with scholars and Thranduil was to be present. Maybe this was actually going to do something. And about time too. There had been more disappearances of late and Ceros could never stop thinking that he and Orodhin might have carried the same fate as Talas and Renude. They had lost some of their best fighters too. Just vanishing into the night, no trace left. But al least no something was going to be done.
Ceros made his way to the meeting alone. He had just finished guarding duty, being posted at the west entrance. Luckily escaping duty on the South gate. No one wanted to guard their anymore. No, not since the shadow had got much thicker. As he walked down the Elven path he past the great trees, birds sang their songs, which were once so full of pleasure, but now alas they were filled with misery and woe. The sunlight glinted through the tree tops, and whispers of their Elven dwellers could be heard echoing throughout. Ceros was now nearing the Halls, there were beautiful trees lining the way to the Halls, and around it flowed a dark, strong, swift river and over it was the bridge. The bridge then lead to the mighty doors, which were now swung wide open. Two guards were placed either side of the large gaping hole in the mass of rock. Slowly nodding towards the guards her carried on inside the Hall. The walls were carved with amazing shapes and pictures, breath taking they were but Ceros had no time to stop and stare he was already late. Deep he went into the ground, following the endless, dim corridors but he finally reached it.
He made his way to the main atrium where the meeting was being held. Slowly he slipped into the room. There were fifty or so chairs in a large circle. At the head sat Thranduil, upon his fair head he wore a crown of woodland flowers, for it was spring again. But somehow it did not feel so. He wore rich green robes embroidered with golden stitches, and he sat upon his wooden throne. The rest of the circle was comprised of various Elves, some scholars, others guards and some Elves of high stature. The atrium, was a circular room with a high ceiling and broad walls. Large pillars were carved from the living rock and were decorated in spring flowers of many colours. The room was lit with many glowing candles and sweet perfume burned, filling Ceros' mind with the smell of Spring. Slowly he took his seat beside Orodhin, Thranduil rose.
+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*
Ceros leaned against the cedar chair, his arms crossed and his legs stretched out in front of him. With content he listened to Thranduil.
“…..they have been missing for four months. Two good archers and able fighters, missing in their own homes? No, the thought is absurd! We must now face this growing threat from the south, speak up those that will for we must do something now…… "

Maikafanawen’s character:
NAME: Ihwestaieleva i-linte-er Lauriëlas (Daughter of the Breeze, the swift one, Goldenleaf) Called Ihwesta by all who can’t remember her full name
AGE: 1000+
Race: Silvan
GENDER: female
WEAPONS: For range combat she uses a rich reddish coloured bow that is 1 ½ meters tall. Gold rose-vine patterns explode from the grip and run up the top and bottom of the bow, fading gradually. Arrows made by her mother—an arrow-smith and a bowyer—are of the same reddish wood with soft brown and white feathers and are tucked in her belt/back quiver combination. (Quiver has reversible straps enabling it to be wore on the back or hung from the belt—able to hold up to fifty arrows). Ihwesta also owns two slender long knives that hang in sheathes on both sides of her belt. The handles are also made of the rich reddish wood with identical gold rose-vine patterns. Elvish script that says Ihwestaieleva i-linte-er Lauriëlas runs down the blades, interwoven with gold lines. Ihwesta owns a sorrel overo with equal amounts of sorrel and white splotches. Her name is Lintequesse.
APPERENCE: Ihwesta is tall (5’ 10”) and slender. Her skin is a bronzish colour free of scars or blemishes of any kind; proof to her renowned swiftness. She has straight light brown hair. She has an oval face with sharp features. Her nose is narrow and slightly aquiline, and thin eyebrows arch slantingly above almond shaped, dark blue eyes. Altogether she is exceptionally plain. She refrains as much as possible from the garb of hunters and trackers. Instead she dons skirts from mid-calf to ankle length, in greens and grays with gold embroidery, and matching tunics that tie at the shoulders and belt around the waist. In her hair she wears decorative feathers and leather straps, and on festive occasions, even adds tiny bells. Around her neck, ankles, and wrists she’ll sport jewelry that reflects her dedication to the natural earth. The ornaments consist mostly of interweaving leather and reeds, with the occasional feather stuck in here and there. When her feet aren’t bare—which they usually are—she’ll slip on a pair of flat-footed, light brown shoes.
PERSONALITY/STRENGHTS/WEEKNESSESS: Has the ability to blend immediately into her surroundings, or flee in the literal blink of an eye. Ihwesta’s rapidity is almost magical. She is also an excellent tracker. Ihwesta can read signs left upon the ground by those who walk upon it, discerning how quickly they passed or whether they carried burdens. She can also listen to the ground to hear the movement of groups of men or orcs (since Elves and Hobbits make no sound when they walk) at a great distance. The Elf also has great weather-sense. She can determine what turns it may take or how much time will pass before a storm arrives. Ihwesta is sharp-eyed, keen-eared, observational, and a quick analytical thinker. Around common people, or strangers she is headstrong and argumentative. Though she is not of noble blood, nor any connection with the guards, she is respected and well liked by her friends and popular among the Silvan Elves. An exotic dancer, Ihwesta passes most of her time entertaining at celebrations and singing self-made ballads for renowned Sindar Elves in their homes. Ihwesta is not known for her skill in battle. She is very good with the bow, but nothing extraordinary
.
HISTORY: Ihwestaieleva I-linte-er Lauriëlas was born to Minyahiniwen Curu-ech-lúva Legolas (her mother) and Rildëoreion Lissi-lammen Lauriëlas (her father). Rildëoreion is a brilliant speaker and works in the palace of Thranduil as a scholar, educating other Elves and keeping record of the Elves’ library, and their history. Minyahiniwen is a fantastic bowyer (and arrow smith) who owns a successful shop just outside of the halls, where many of the guard come to purchase their fine weapons and replenish their arrows. Ihwesta’s older brother, Orodhîn linte-cham Lauriëlas, is learning the art of bow making and hopes to travel to Lórien with his skill. Ihwesta learned a bit from her father on the lore of the Elves, but was more concerned with the world about her. She picked up as much information as she could from the trackers and hunters of Greenwood. From them she learned weather-sense, tracking, herb lore, and how to use long-knives. Without a solid purpose or profession, Ihwesta roams the woods, thinking up new ballads, and drawing pictures of different trees and plants for her father to use in his books. Then the shadow began to spread. Orodhîn’s friend Ceros, a warrior for Thranduil, spoke of going out and discovering the source of the shadow, and conquering it. Though Orodhîn had obligations home with Minyahiniwen in their shop, Ihwesta offered to help in any way she could.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Maikafanawen’s post
She didn’t want it. It was drab and strident which wouldn’t help her dance at all. But the Elf was smiling and he looked sincere. Ihwesta extended her hand, accepting the pair of bell-adorned anklets from Ghiorden.
“Ah, thanks, Ghio, thanks a lot. They’re very—well you’re very thoughtful.” She smiled up at him tucking the anklets into one of the deep pockets in her skirt. Ghiorden was very kind, and Ihwesta had enjoyed his company a lot, though he was two thousand years her senior, while she was learning to arch, but lately he was growing into a bit of a nuisance, and she couldn’t piece it together.
“Are you dancing soon?” he asked eagerly.
“I have no events scheduled requiring entertainment from me as of now. I’m taking a break, but when I practice I-I’ll wear them.” She forced a slight smile, her mind buzzing for some excuse to get away.
The day had been long and hot. Ihwesta was forced now to take extra caution as she journeyed further from the palace walls, which meant going slow and studying carefully her surroundings. One of her brown hide shoes was ripping down the back and she lacked the tools to mend it now, and doubted returning home soon with Ghiorden drilling her with pointless conversation. When she thought all hope of repairing her shoe and getting to the Council on time, she was rescued.
“Ihwestaieleva,” said a voice behind her. The Elf turned to see [Elf #3] coming her way, probably on his way to the Council. “They are expecting us. If you’ll excuse us Ghiorden.” The older Elf nodded, disappointment slightly lining his face.
“See you later then, Ihwesta.” He bowed and retreated gracefully down the hall again. The she-Elf slumped her shoulders and confided in the guard Elf.
“I feel so nasty. But, there’s something peculiar about him and I don’t trust him at all.” [Elf #3] stopped and tossed a glance over his shoulder then looked down at the she-Elf beside him.
“Yes, he is eerie, I’ll give you that.” Ihwesta absently rubbed at the button on the side of her tunic.
“I know he wants to work with Minyahiniwen at the shop but, well, she’s picky about her work and only Orodhîn knows how to fletch or polish just the way she wants it. I wonder how long he’ll be at it.” They entered the Council hall where Elves were already seated, waiting for Thranduil to address their purpose for gathering.
The king spoke of the disappearances of the Elves in recent weeks and of the growing shadow that seemed to weave its way through the ancient trees taking the merry forest creatures and beautiful shrubbery with it. Then he called for action, action that would discover the perilous enigma that was soon to envelope the entity of the Woodland Elves’ home. Bravest among them was Ceros. He was first to speak.
“Friends of old, I know what must be done. A company of nine shall patrol to the depths of the wood to unveil this mystery that consumes our realm. I propose that—”
“Hold a moment! This is dangerous!” protested [Elf #4, brief description]. Madness to explore something we know so little about. No one who has met this peril has lived. It is insanity to risk the lives of yet more people.” His/her brow furrowed in disturbance as he glanced around the room for support. Another came to his aide.
“I agree with [Elf #4],” offered [Elf #5, brief description]. “No one would take up with you, Ceros, except the foolhardy and novice blinded with a false sense of honor towards the realm.” Ihwesta shook her head and stood also, asking permission to speak.
Thranduil nodded and she began, “I disagree with both of you and will follow Ceros. I do not mean to sing my own praises, but I am a decent tracker and if this power is not supernatural, the best among us could stand against it, I am sure.” [Elf #4, and Elf #5] shook their heads, retaking their seats. A few moments of silent echoed silently in the air. Ihwesta was one of the youngest there and felt awkward searching the gatherings’ faces for replies. Then, another spoke up, agreeing to take up with Ceros.
“I may be how you say ‘blinded with honor’, but to me that is a credit in itself,” stated [Elf #3]. “And I am neither foolhardy nor is my reasoning for reverence false. You have everything I can offer,” he said, bowing low to Thranduil and then looking towards Ceros. “I will go.”
“Have you no concern for your safety, [Elf #3]?” another interrogated. “You, Ihwesta, your mother needs you in her shop? Yes?” [Elf #6] leaned forward in his seat, honest trepidation for the young she-Elf impressed lightly on his face. Orodhîn spoke but did not stand.
“I help Minyahiniwen in the bowyer shop. Ihwesta is free to do as she chooses.” [Elf #6] scowled slightly.
“We need skilled warriors,” Ceros pointed out. “Our troupe will not be complete without many of you. [Elf #4], please reconsider.” The first to depress the idea stared down the Elf who stood by Thranduil before standing slowly.
“I shall go. [Elf #5]?” He stood beside his friend.
“Yes, I will join thy company,” he answered. After what was a short time to Elves, though truly two plus hours, a company of nine was ready to do the king’s bidding.

Everdawn’s character:
NAME: Bierayn Arië, known as Arië, the younger.
AGE: 702
RACE: Elf
GENDER: female
WEAPONS: A bow, given to her by her father, and two daggers, embossed with charms of the Elves, which she likes to think she never needs to use.
APPEARANCE: Five feet eleven inches tall, Fair of face, with deep green eyes and long white-blonde hair. Arië is beautiful, but no more than she would consider Greenwood. She wears the dresses of the Woodland Elves which are in shades of green. Her hair and garments are often adorned with tiny white jewels. However, Arië does not wear her dresses into the woods when she is tracking, but light boots, and a dark green tunic with silver Elven stitching.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Arië, being younger than most Elves considered warrior Elves; she is slightly intimidated by them. She is a dreamer, and likes to be among the natural energy of the wood. Arië will often walk for hours among deer and birds that flock to her. Arië has an aura about her, whatever she says is always important, which makes the older Elves respect her. She is an expert tracker, with a keener eye than most Elves. What she lacks in the skill of archery, she more than makes up for in hand to hand combat with her daggers. Though, she prefers to be a pacifist, but will kill if there is need. She will never kill an animal of grace.
HISTORY: Biearyn Arië, is the daughter of Menorë and Sendalien Arië, who are both loyalists to King Thranduil. Arië is an only daughter, though found brothers in many of the King's guards. Although young in the eyes of the Elves, she shows wises of an Elf twice her age. When Arië was younger, she grew a habit of exploring Greenwood, alone; this laid the foundations of her love of the nature and the animals within Greenwod. Often a quiet child, she would speak as if she were older, this enchanted almost every Elf within the Elf king's halls, including the King. Arië lead a quiet life, learning about the forest and tracking. Orodhin was one of her best friends who taught her this art. She has never had a need to attack and kill another creature.
*+*+*+*+*
Everdawn’s post
Once again Arië had wandered off into the wood, against many of the Elves wishes. Two had gone missing in the previous months, and the Elves still had no idea why. She walked barefooted through the woods until she came to a stream. The water was not deep, but the brook was a harbour for all kinds of small fish. Arië ran her hands through the water. Several deer had come from the surrounding woodlands at the sound of Arië’s voice raised in Elfish song. “I though it would be that you would not come.” She spoke to one of the deer who laid down beside her. “Tell me Aras, have you seen them, the guards that have gone?” she asked it.
“That deer can tell you nothing.” It was the voice of another Elf guard Noneil, he had a desperate look on his face. “Mae govannen” she said as he helped her up. “You mother sent me, to find you. Mellon, you should not go away like that now these days bring danger!” there was look of concern on his face. “Come, back to the halls we shall go.” Arië sighed, “You doubt me so, It is not wise.” She shook her head. “However, Noniel, If you think that I am unsafe why do you come alone?” He stopped, a look of surprise on his face. “Well, I did not think.” He said plainly. “I don’t think that my safety is at all threatened by this part of the woods.” He said.
“Precisely my point.” Replied Arië. Noniel looked as if he could not speak. “Do not let it trouble you my friend. Now, why did my mother really send you?” she asked taking a sideways glance at him while they walked. “The King has called a meeting, Ceros is also attending as he has something to say.” Arië interjected, “about the missing ones?”
“That is what I am thinking; I think he wants to send a search party. In which case I will not go.” Arië spun around. “OH! But you must! We must!” Noniel frowned, “We?”
“Yes, I will go, you forget yours Elf, I am a very skilled tracker Mellon, better than many guards. Not to make mys Elf better offcourse, but I could be a real asset.” Nonile began walking again. “You may discuss that when you hear what the King has to say, or after you discuss it with your parents. Who of course will not allow you to go.” This annoyed Arië, “You may not tell me what I can do, Noniel, You are far too protective of me, I can look after myself, better than you could. Now, lets not fight, I do not wish to find an enemy in you old friend.”
They crossed the bridge from the river and proceeded to the Elf King’s hall. Most of the inhabitants were there, including her mother Sendalien Arië, who was called Arië also by the Elves, and her father Menorë. “I have told you, daughter. Never to go out there, now these days bring peril.” He said solemnly. “She only wants to be closer to Ea, hervenn” spoke the elder Arië.
The king spoke.
“Ceros take me. You know as well as I no one here can track as well.” Ceros nodded, “Yes, you have a point young one. But for a woman to be out in the dangers of the woods, I am not so sure.” The king nodded. “I know what I am doing, you yours Elf Ceros have said on numerous occasions that I have been able to sense things before the others. And what if it could help you, I can fight, these guards have taught me from a young age!”
“Very much correct Arië. You are quite in touch with everything also aren’t you.” He stood thinking for a minute. I will speak for you, for I have much confidence in you, come you will, that is if Menorë and of course the King have no objections.” She glanced at her father. Who stood tall in thought. “I will allow her, if you shall speak for her Ceros. Even I know you would be foolish not to accept an offer form Arië the younger.” Said the king. Menorë frowned. The older Arië at his side, “If it is you wish King Thranduil, My daughter will go, and all blessing will follow her.” Arië breathed a huge sigh of relief. “Ah! It is done!”

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
From Maika:
There are no less than thirty of the most influential Elves (including Ihwesta’s brother, Orodhîn) sitting in a semi circle with Thranduil’s chair opposite them with I guess his wife and son(s) and daughter(s)—if any—on either side of him. The hall is in the design of a clearing in a forest. Columns are in the shape of trees from which branches protrude when they meet ceiling, reaching out over the room. Candelabras—with five uneven candleholders each—stand around the border of the room giving off an adequate amount of light. The chairs are made of mahogany, the most fine and rare kind of wood with carvings of vines, fruits, nuts and berries on them. [I’m going to say that it’s probably around early springtime?] Thranduil is wearing a crown of golden vines with budding flowers representing the time of season. His robes are of vibrant blues and golds and his golden blond hair is not plaited but let loose and wavy over his broad shoulders. In his left hand he holds his scepter: made of mahogany that is finely painted in motifs of lilies and daffodils for the spring season. The meeting is taking place in early evening around 5:00 pm.

NAME: Taurëwen Taur'ohtar (Forest maiden, Ranger/woodsman)
AGE: 2575
RACE: Silvan
GENDER: Female
WEAPONS:Taurëwen carries a long bow of silver grey beech wood inlaid with a green ivy leaf design, her plain earthen brown quiver hugs her torso to sit comfortably on her back. it is filled with silver tipped arrows, the arrow heads are made for her by Minyahiniwen the arrow smith , but the shafts and fletching she does herself using what ever the trees and birds of the greenwood provide for her. she has a light steel elven short sword with the same ivy leaf inlay on the brown leather hilt, it has elven runes of protection delicately engraved down both sides of the blade (The runes are for the protection of the woodland realm and not for her personal safety). from her waist sits a long knife, the handle of which is made from deer horn.
APPEARANCE: Taurëwen is tall and slender, about 5 ft 10 inches. her fine golden blonde hair sits just past her shoulders , the sides tied back in a number of various braids that are interlaced with woodland flowers or gold/red leaves depending on the season. She has bright piercing green almond shaped eyes and is always dressed in forest colours (Again depending on the season) Greens, gold's and browns in spring and summer, reds and gold in autumn and dark browns in winter..Taurëwen always wears a shabby green herb satchel on her belt. Her mother made it for her when she was still young in the world the faded yellow stitching can only just be made out 'Fallaner' (Healer). Her complexion is darker than most as she spends most of her time out in the woods.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Taurëwen is good natured and friendly but serious about her protection of the Woodland realm and she only raises her weapons in defence of the Greenwood. She is well versed in herblore and her abilities in healing are held in high regard by all of the Woodland Realm. She can be quite stubborn when she feels she is right and often follows her instincts.
HISTORY: Taurëwen is the second child of Ithildin (her father) and Nieninque (her mother) and younger sister of Talas, Ithildin is a captain of the kings guards and Nieninque is a healer of the Royal halls. From a young age it was noticed that Taurëwen shared her mothers gift of healing, so Nieninque shared her talent and her extensive knowledge of herblore with her daughter and Taurëwen became a great healer.
But being stuck to the confines of the halls of healing did not suit the forest maiden and she more and more went out into the woods to gather the herb's herself. She loved every little thing about her woodland home, she would sing with the birds as she gathered her herb's and listen to the chattering of the squirrel as she rested in golden glades and secret place that she found in her wanderings. She was never more happy than when she wandered the greenwood.
Taurëwen's father and brother did not like her wondering through the woods unaccompanied, especially as her walks tended to take her further and further from the safety of the halls, "There are thing out there that you are not equipped to deal with" they would often tell her. "Teach me!" she yelled at Talas one day after he saved her from becoming lunch for a rogue spider, on one of their walks. Talas had looked at his sister in surprise, she was skilled with the bow like all of their race but only once had he seen her kill anything with it, a deer, he remembered the tears that had streamed down his sisters face as the deer fell to the ground, she had even tried to heal the poor beast but to no avail and as far as he knew she had never hunted again and ate only what the forest and animals provided (nuts, berries, milk.....etc). But as he looked at his sister he could see a change in her, her eyes burned with anger, not at the danger to her own life but at the hurt that the spider had cause the Great Wood. "Are you sure!" he had asked her, "Please brother, I now know my purpose" she had begged him and there in the damaged glade she swore to do all in her power to protect and heal the Woodland Realm from all hurts.
Talas had kept his promise and taught her to use a short sword that he had specially made for her (This is the sword she now carries) he also taught her how to make arrows for her bow. Taurëwen had taken a thick branch that she had managed to save from a Great beech tree that had been poisoned by the evil spider and she gave it to Minyahiniwen the bowyer and asked her if she would fashion it into a bow so she could protect the rest of the woods from the same fate. Minyahiniwen had agreed and lovingly shaped the branch into the bow she now carries.
As the years passed Taurëwen became as skilled with bow and sword as her brother, and she was often permitted to take the watch with him and her healing skills never failed. Taurëwen also learned to read the signs the forest gave to her and the secrets they kept, Talas endearingly called her elle-Taur'ohtar (Little Ranger) and this is how she got her second name.
In the past year a shadow has fallen over her, her melodic woodland songs changed to laments and she became saddened as a great shadow rose in the south , the usual chatter of the squirrels had become coarse and bitter and their grey coats had turned black as night and even the once beautiful trees of the southern borders had become twisted and gnarled. When her brother disappeared her songs ceased altogether and she became quiet and withdrawn , but that grief has slowly turned to anger over the months and brought new determination to her, she had sworn in the presence of her brother to protect the realm and all in it and although she feared her brother was dead she intended to keep her promise.
____________________________________________
Nerindel's post
Taurëwen walk slowly back from her watch of the eastern borders, after her brothers disappearance four months ago she had ask the king's permission to join the watch in her brother stead, With a saddened heart he had granted her request. "The Song of the Greenwood is lost, but it shall ever remain in our hearts" he had told her sympathetically. He had been right after that day she had not had the heart to sing and even now she could not find her voice.
As she walked she suddenly felt a cold shiver run up her spine, she looked up to see the path that ran to the south gate, how she got here she could not fathom, her feet had merely brought her here. She pulled at her green and gold tunic nervously and took a few steps towards the gate, but as she did a short gust of spring wind blew and the trees shook their new leaves in warning. Shivering again, she heeded their warning and did not venture into the thick darkness that lay about the gate, instead she quickly turned and made her way hurriedly to the council halls.
As she neared the Halls she reached out her hand to touch one of the great beech trees that lined the way to the Halls, her heart gladdened that the shadow had not reaches these magnificent trees, she glanced back, the shadow could not be seen from here but it was still heavy on her heart as she crossed the bridge and passed through the great doors of the Woodland halls. Deeper and deeper she went until at last she reached the main atrium.
The meeting had already begun, so she slipped quietly into an empty seat at the back of the circle. She breathed deeply taking in the sweet smells of the wild spring flowers and sweet perfumes that filled the room.
"Friends of old, I know what must be done. A company of nine shall patrol the depths of the wood to unveil this mystery that consumes our realm."
These were the first words she heard as she had blocked out the others concerning the missing elves to prevent her grief from resurfacing. She did not need to look up to know the voice was that of Ceros the commander of Thranduil's army, She could feel her cheeks flush with anger as she listened to [Elf #4] and [Elf #5] speak of the dangers, off course it would be dangerous, but it would be more perilous to sit here and wait for the darkness to engulf us she thought heatedly, but as she was about to rise and air her protest another spoke.
"I disagree with both of you and will follow Ceros. I do not mean to sing my own praises, but I am a decent tracker and if this power is not supernatural, the best among us could stand against it, I am sure."
As she looked up she saw Ihwestaaieleva, Minyahiniwen the bowyers daughter, she drew strength from the younger woman's words and managed to calm herself, then another Elf rose and spoke his piece offering to go with Ceros. The other two were obviously still not convinced and spoke openly, she lowered her head as Orodhîn rose in the defence of his sister.
Taurëwen had harboured secret feelings for the male trainee bowyer before her brothers disappearance, Orodhîn and Ceros had been the last ones to see her brother and they had both been unable to tell her anything of Talas's disappearance. She had been unable to look the young man in the face the last time she had been in his mothers shop, she had practically bolted from the shop when he handed her the silver arrow heads he had made for her.
She continued to listen as Ceros convinced the other Elves to join him, Then she watched as the King consented to let Arië the younger join the company, A wise decision she thought for she knew of the young elf was more attuned to the nature of the woodlands than even she.
Seeing now her opportunity to speak she grasped it "I too will go" she called determinedly "Nooooo" she heard as all eyes locked with hers, she suddenly felt uncomfortable. The cry was her mothers and her father was now walking towards her, he placed his gentle hands on her shoulder and looked at her askingly, "Please understand that I must father " she whispered, " I have to know what this darkness is and from whence it has come ere it consumes me, it already eats at my heart by the taking my beloved brother and by the corruption of beasts and trees of our southern borders" she saw Arië nodding her agreement with her assessment of the border. Her Ithildin nodded then turned to the King and Ceros,
"If you permit it my lord, my daughter shall go with Ceros and the others. She will been of great asset as her healing skills are unsurpassed and she is quite capable in combat."
"You have no need to convince us we know full well the ladies skills " the king assured him "You have my blessing"
Ithildin embraced his daughter then went to reassure and comfort his wife.
Taurëwen took her place silently with the others and awaited the kings bidding.

Character list thus far:
Arien: Ceros - leader/warrior - male
Maikafanawen: Ihwesta - tracker - female
Everdawn: Arie - tracker - female
Nerindel: Taurewen - healer - female
Ok, since we have two trackers already, we don't need anymore of those, I guess we only need one healer. Let's concentrate now on getting some good male fighters. But if you really want to do a female elf we have one--maybe two--more openings. It has to be a good female bio though. smilies/wink.gif

Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES– The Green Dragon Inn.
NAME: Gilbereth
AGE: 1065
RACE: Silvan
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS: Long slender sword, primarily for thrusting and not cutting. It has a basket hilt made up of an Intertwining vine and leaf pattern that covers the entire front and most of the sides of the hand. The blade is of a strong flexible metal that only has a cutting edge along the last couple of inches of the blade. To accompany his sword, he has a matching dagger with the same long narrow blade. He also has a small iron buckler that has Elvis script around the rim and in the center his family crest. For armor he only wears a light-weight chest plate that also bears his crest, a hand bearing a tree branch and underneath it, a sword with the Elvis Inscription "Do not draw me without reason, do not sheath me without honor".
APPEARANCE: He is tall (about 6' 7") and has blond hair that is tied back in braids as is the custom of Eleven nobility. He has blue-gray eyes that always look somewhat sad. Because he is nobility he wears the robes of his rank, most of which are rich forest colors and are richly embroidered with leafy patterns. On his feet he wears Eleven slippers. His face is not much to look at and is fairly plain, but almost handsome in its plainness none the less.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Like most elves, he can walk silently over any terrain. He is an expert swordsman, and has been taught fencing for most of his life. He may be a skilled fighter, but will never start a fight ,but he is always the one who finishes it. He is always calm even in the most dangerous of situations, which he usually tries to avoid if he can. He is not overly brave, but not a coward either. His parents (both being nobles themselves) taught him at an early age that if he wants something in life he must get it himself, and not trust anyone else to help him. With this in mind, he has made very few true friends, and has always fended for himself. He is very popular in the court and is always up to date with the latest fashions, some may even call him a fop.
HISTORY: Gilbereth was born to Eladine and Sindarieo, both nobles in the King's court, his father actually being one of the King's advisers. Like his parents, when he came to the age when he must decide what to do with his life, he decided to simply remain at court with his parents and live the life of a noble. He has but one older brother, the captain of the Eleven Guard, but he was one of the first of the elves to disappear when the shadow came to their lands. Despite his parents every effort to find him, the brother was never found, but Gilbereth's parents still hold on to the secret hope that maybe he's still alive.
*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^
Eladain Moruviel's post
"Oh Mother, must I come?" said the young Gilbereth with an irritated tone "Those Council meetings are so long and boring ,I'd much rather be out with showing off my new spring clothes" "Yes you must come!" His mother shouted back at him from the other room "All the important nobles are coming, how would it look if you, the son of one of the King's advisers, didn't show up?" "Alright" he sighed" " I'll come if I must" And so, a little while later they both set out for the Council hall.
When they arrived, most of the other elves were already seated. They were hunters, trackers, and nobles for the most part. Also seated there, were some soldiers and some members of the King's guard, distinguishable by their green and gold uniforms. He and his mother found his father and took seats next to him. A few moments later the King started to speak, but Gilbereth wasn't paying attention, he was thinking about his brother, he had been doing that a lot lately "It's been what? A year since he had gone missing" he thought to himself.
The next thing he knew an older Elf by the name of Ceros was saying “Friends of old, I know what must be done. A company of nine shall patrol to the depths of the wood to unveil this mystery that consumes our realm...."what's going on he whispered to his mother "Good heavens child!" she whispered angrily "haven't you been paying attention?" "Well..um...no" he replied,s omewhat embarrassed "The King has been talking about the shadow that has come to our beloved forest. He says that we must send someone to find out what it is"
Just then an elf [Elf #4, brief description] jumped out of his chair and shouted Hold a moment! This is dangerous! It is madness to explore something we know so little about. No one who has met this peril has lived. It is insanity to risk the lives of yet more people.”
As Gilbereth watched another elf[Elf #5, brief description] stood up and nodding his head in agreement with [elf #4] said “No one would take up with you, Ceros, except the foolhardy and novice blinded with a false sense of honor towards the realm.”
Then, to Gilbereth's surprise a young female elf stood up and said "I disagree with both of you and will follow Ceros. I do not mean to sing my own praises, but I am a decent tracker and if this power is not supernatural, the best among us could stand against it, I am sure.” Elves [#4] and [#5} retook their seats. And a few moments of silent echoed silently in the air.
And so it went on for hours , some agreeing with Ceros, and some disagreeing, but in the end it was decided that 9 elves should go into the woods and search out this shadow.8 elves went forward, each in there turn, but one more was still needed. "Well" Gilbereth though to himself "Here is a way to show my parents that I am responsible, and maybe even find my brother while I'm at it. they need one more elf, why shouldn't it be me" And so, to his parent's shock, he stood up and asked the king if he could accompany the other Elves on there journey saying "You all knew my brother, he was captain of the guard, and well liked by all. you also know that he disappeared early last year. I wish to go along with the company, and see if mayhap I can find him, or at least something that could tell us what happened to him" His parents tried to convince him not to go, but he was determined and so there efforts were fruitless. And so, finally, the King accepted him as the 9th member of the company.

If you find an edit from me on your submission - I'm just setting the First Post up in a manner so I can transfer it easily to the game when it opens.
_____________________________________________
Also, please note when you run a line of characters across the screen (to make breaks between sections of text), just do it half-way (which is one length of the 'post a reply box'). If it is extended too long it pushes the entire screen out and makes it difficult to read.

Which one? The Green Dragon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NAME: Ainemetion
AGE: 675
RACE: Silvan
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS: A pair of long knives, with handles of deer antler. They were a gift from his uncle at his birth, and Ainemetion is never without them. He often practices alone, but has never had a chance to use the weapons in combat.
APPEARANCE: Fairly tall (6’4”) with long, tawny hair and very dark eyes, nearly black. He wears a plain brown tunic and is always barefoot.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Ainemetion is known for his quiet, acquiescent personality, and is considered a pushover. In truth, his attitude is not indicative of a lack of courage, but of a natural respect and submission. Ainemetion is truly passionate, and stands firm in his beliefs. However, he rarely sees profit in argument or battle.
Though he secretly longs to prove himself, he is content to appear passive until his time comes. This behavior makes him a disappointment to his parents. His mother is affectionate, but Ainemetion senses her secret dissatisfaction. His father is openly disapproving, and treats his strange son with contempt.
When Ainemetion does speak to and issue it is with power and conviction. Though he may be full of misgivings, he will hardly ever back down once he has finally taken a stand. His speech is resplendent with the knowledge he has gained in many years of watching others and listening to their discussion.
His mind is never idle, and Ainemetion can often be found in rapt contemplation, perhaps solving some imagined problem or conflict. This causes him to seem quixotic and oblivious, and maybe he his.
HISTORY: Ainemetion was born to Galanduin, an expert sword smith, and Evien, a smalltime healer. Both parents wanted a gifted child to help them in their work. Obviously, they were equally disappointed. Their son was born small and weak, and grew to be a quiet, daydreaming boy with no apparent talents.
Always aware of his parent’s displeasure, Ainemetion came to expect rejection. At first, he became servile and fawning, forever trying to earn approval of others. Of course this repulsive behavior did not get him any friends. Finally, he gave up on gaining friends, and turned to the peace and seclusion of the wood for comfort.
Since that choice, Greenwood has been family and friends to Ainemetion. He has a deep sense of devotion to the beasts and plants of the wood, and loves all as brothers. The quickest way to earn Ainemetion’s displeasure is to insult or harm anything living in Greenwood. He is just as loving towards the Elves of his home, for he has always believed that he was unacceptable, rather than that others were not accepting. This is, in a way, true, because his problem is one of not considering himself good enough.
One Elf has helped and supported Ainemetion since the day of his birth. His uncle, Annúneldaion, loved Ainemetion and saw something in him his parents did not. Annúneldaion has not openly befriended his nephew, but preferred to wait for Ainemetion to realize that he must take a stand and make his own way. Ainemetion always sensed that he had a friend in his uncle, and strove to please him.
Unfortunately, Annúneldaion is one of the Elves who have disappeared. When Ainemetion realizes what must be done, he will stop at nothing to avenge his uncle and shield others from the same fate. But first, he has to rise above 675 years of passive silence in two hours.
Kates Frodo Temp's post
The tall, well-built Elf named Ainemetion was just returning from a solitary walk in the wood. It was so beautiful in springtime, he could hardly keep away! Everything was so fresh, so alive!
When he reached home, Ainemetion was puzzled to see his father at the door to greet him.
“Council,” he growled. “You should go.”
“Oh, yes! Go!” His mother, Evien, rejoined.
“Alright. I’ll see you when I get back.” The door slammed shut.
Ainemetion slipped quietly into the Council hall, hoping he had not disturbed the other, far older Elves. He took an empty seat and settled in, preparing to hear what he knew would be a lengthy and intriguing conversation. He expected the council was concerned with the strange disappearance of several of the best Elf warriors. Ainemetion listened as a respected Elf named Ceros began to speak.
“Friends of old, I know what must be done. A company of nine shall patrol to the depths of the wood to unveil this mystery that consumes our realm. I propose that--
Ainemetion sat silently for a moment, staring at the intrepid Ceros. Did he really believe anyone would accompany him? Even if they did, what made the hotheaded Elf think they would come back? Ainemetion was the last one to reject a plan to protect his beloved home, but this was insane! He could not keep silent.
“Hold a moment! This is dangerous!” protested Ainemetion, leaping to his feet. “It is madness to explore something we know so little about. No one who has met this peril has lived. It is insanity to risk the lives of yet more people.” His brow furrowed in disturbance as he glanced around the room for support. Another came to his aid.
Wait! Arien, I thought that we had decided that our final count would be four female elves and five male.
I want four females and five males total: in a real outing in Middle Earth there probably wouldn't have been any females so it is most reasonable that there is at least a greater number of males even if it is just by one.
Pio: If you could, change the Characters Proposed to what you have pointed out in your last post. Thanks very much.
Hello, I was wondering if I could play in this RPG. I've been looking over the storyline for many days now, and it looks very interesting. I actually wanted to use my favorite character on this one. I used her in Cirith Ungol, though I must admit I have developed the character info a little more than when I posted there.
How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in? 1---Hunt for the Dragon
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? Yes, the Green Dragon
For your character please include:
NAME: Eruwen
AGE: 843
RACE: Silven
GENDER: Female
WEAPONS: She carries nothing other than a wooden bow crafter by her father and a small dagger. The bow is of great Elven design which includes writings of her ancesters throughout the engravings. The arrows held in a quiver around her shoulders are of the same brownish wood as the bow and are marked with her father's personal design. The dagger she carries is tied around her lower leg and is safely hidden within her shoe. It is of hard, grey steel with the name of her mother engraved along the blade. This design Eruwen did herself.
APPEARANCE: Eruwen's hight reaches around 6'1 when she stands at full length. Appearing beyond pale, yet also fair skin color and long, brown hair are the raging, sea-green eyes of her mother. She wears a light, green tunic embroidered with pale green and silver designs along the sleeves and near the brown belt at her waist. She wears lighter, brown trousers with strong, dark, brown boots at her feet. Underneath the dark, brown cloak tied at her neck, lies a small, silver flute which most know nothing of. This flute was given to her by her grandfather and holds a very close place in her heart now that he has sailed on across the sea.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Eruwen has a very high spirit. Her personality is split, in a way, as if it has two separate parts. One, she loves music and songs. The other, the stronger if you will, she loves to fight more than anything. She takes on the strength of her father by nature but also carries the weakness of a close relative of hers that has now faded from all life. Although quite skillful archery and able to defend herself, she has the fate of tending to make sudden decisions which are sometimes dreadfully costly.
HISTORY: Eruwen was born and grew up in Greenwood the Great. Her father, Aratar, is very close to Thranduil, the King, but he liked to keep a further distance from Thranduil's halls to gain some peacefulness from all the comotion around the palace. Though he made his dwelling on the further most northern outskirts of their people, they do have many neighboring Elves of which Eruwen has grown to love.
Her mother, Artue, who was a well-skilled scout for Thranduil, has not been seen for over a year. Sadly, she was one disappeared while searching the wood. Eruwen often liked to sit in the long branches of the towering trees around her home in hope that her mother would soon return. In spite of all the heartache Eruwen has gone through, it has helped her become a very strong and valiant creature among the Elves.
Eruwen does have a brother, by the name of Nárello, but she rarely sees him. Nárello is a warrior of Greenwood the Great and is posted for much of the time at the South gate.
Eruwen's post
Many years passed by after the disappearance of Eruwen's mother, Artue. Long the shadow had passed into their forest, and it was drawing even closer to the Silven Elves of Greenwood the Great. As always around the later part of the day, Eruwen rode through the deep wood closer towards Thranduil's palace and then on towards the South gate to greet her brother before she returned home again. Soon a break came in the forest as Eruwen rode into sight of the palace. She gazed up at the towering peaks before her as a soft wind began to blow. The bright sun shone through the tops of the trees down onto the land below her causing a shadow to be cast down on her, and it also caused the wind to become strangely cool.
As she passed by the palace, she began to notice many Elves, many she knew, slip behind the walls of Thranduil's dwelling. Curiously, she kept riding passed when suddenly she saw her brother about to enter the palace as well. Eruwen quickly dismounted from her grey steed, Mírie, and ran over to where he stood.
"Nárello!" Eruwen yelled catching his attention. Nárello froze and turned to meet his sister with a discouraged look on his face.
"Eruwen, go home," he said forcing her away. "You don't need to be here."
Eruwen looked at him strangely, but then she spoke again as she realized what was happening.
"You told me the council wasn't until tomorrow," she said. "Why did you lie to me?"
"Because I don't want you to come, now go home!"
"No!" Eruwen yelled causing many Elves to turn towards them. Seeing she caused a sudden crowd around, she lowered her voice again and continued.
"She was my mother too, Nárello." she said. "I deserve to avenge her disappearance as much as you do."
"But I don't want you to disappear as well," Nárello replied. "It's too dangerous."
"Well what about you? Don't you think I wouldn't want you to go either?"
"And I probably won't. Thranduil is sending only the most skillful of the Elves on the mission."
"Well then, I shall go," Eruwen said starting to walk towards where she saw the other Elves enter, but she was stopped by her brother. She looked up into his piercing, green eyes and saw the fear he held. "I'll be alright," she said finally, but it didn't seem to help.
Ignoring Nárello's wishes, Eruwen quickly made her way down to where the council was being held. Many Elves were seated already as Thranduil rose to speak. He spoke of many of the disappearances in the forest and of the shadow which was drawing close in the land. Soon a well-known Elf, Ceros, stood and spoke.
"Friends of old, I know what must be done." Ceros stated. "A company of nine shall patrol to the depths of the wood to unveil this mystery that consumes our realm. I propose that—"
His words were soon cut off by an Elf at the side which protested his idea. Many other Elves spoke up and both protested and agreed to going with the company. Soon many Elves already agreed to go, and, without much reguard to anyone, Eruwen stood suddenly.
"I will go as well," she said raising her voice above the crowd.
I wonder if all of you who have given a character bio have read any of the other's? You all have a family member who has disappeared ... which is fine ye know. Who wants to run an RPG full of heros ... *ME* smilies/wink.gif Kidding. Just thought I'd point out the irony...
Anyhow, Eruwen's character and post are fine. Unless Arien sees some area for improvement, you're accepted.
That means we need only two more males. Though if you wanted to submit a female bio that's fine, you will just have a very small chance of being accepted that's all ... *yawn* Well I probably should have waited to post this until tomorrow morning because *yawn again* I've v v v tired---ZzZzZzZzZzZzZ
I have a question which would relate to this a little. Were any of the Elves who disappeared ever found again? I just sort of got this spur of the moment thought on the later events in the story, and I was wondering if it was possible.
Before the game starts, I thought you guys should know my position. I have unlimited computer access for this week and next week, and will be taking full advantage of it. (I do need 5 hours of sleep, though! smilies/wink.gif After next week, the most time I'll be able to give is 2 hours a week. I'm committed for the whole 10 weeks, but I wanted to make sure that this is acceptable for the game. Thanks!
Oh, yeah. I'll be deleting this post after you get a chance to see it, unless Pio beats me to it! smilies/smile.gif
What do you mean 2 hours a week? Like ten min intervals twice a day or one day a week for only two hours?
It varies. Okay, here's the deal. I'm 14, and my parents limit my computer time to 2 hours a week in 30 minute intervals. I have to work that in w/my school schedule, my dad's work schedule (his computer has internet, mine doesn't) etc. I write out my post on paper when I can, since that's always available. I'll work hard to get time, and I can get on the library computer once a week. Internet just isn't a priority with my parents, and I have to work around that. If this won't work, I'm ready to forfeit my place in the game. Thank you for your patience!
It's not a problem at all. Thank you for letting us know. And since this is your first RPG here on the Downs, we won't jump down your throat. smilies/biggrin.gif You're a great writer!!
since a lot of elves have "disappeared" it makes sense that there are a bunch of people that want to find that lost brother or sister or mother. Thats why most of us seem to have lost a family member
Just my 4 cents worth (inflation)
Character Description Form:
Have you ever played in an RPG at the Barrow Downs? – no
How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in? one, Dark Seduction (cameo)
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Which one? both
NAME: Reynion (Reyn to what few friends he has)
AGE: 2658
RACE: Silvan
GENDER: male
WEAPONS: A sword named Lachril, two longknives and two smaller knives for throwing, and of course, the requisite bow. His arrows are always fletched with green-dyed feathers, and his bow was varnished in such a way as to make in nearly invisible in the deep forest.
APPEARANCE: Reynion is very tall, with black hair. His skin is almost translucently pale and he has grey eyes. He wears predominately dark green or black and usually wears a hood when outdoors. When he stands perfectly still, he tends to blend in with the trees and has often startled people when he suddenly moves.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Reynion is something of a lone wolf, and spends most of his time alone in the forest. He does not usually work in a team, as he is very opinionated and has a rather caustic wit that is not really the best way to win friends. He dislikes taking orders, but will when circumstances demand it. He is primarily a hunter and stays mostly near the borders of Greenwood. Reynion grew up in Thranduil’s halls. He was not very social as a small child, which has carried over to his hood. He has never really wanted to marry, which is fortunate, because he has had a shortage of elvenmaids who were interested in him anyway. When he was fairly young (five hundred or so), he discovered that he had an aptitude for throwing knives, after which he began perfecting the art to nearly the exclusion of everything else. His sword is carried more for show than for use, as he is not very good at using it. He focuses on the bow and his knives rather than using the longer weapon. His father is not on very good terms with him for this reason as the sword is his weapon of choice. That is one of the reasons he’s a loner. He has had some close encounters lately with spiders, and has decided to come to the interior for safety.
HISTORY: When Reynion was about five hundred years old, he began to use throwing knives almost exclusively. This brought him into conflict with his father because Eldarion preferred to use the sword, and expected his son to do the same. This led to his being kicked out of the family home. This first time, he didn’t go very far away and simply constructed a flet nearby. He continued to spend time with his mother and two sisters (he has no brothers) though he avoided his father. This in turn led to his father being even angrier with him, Eldarion feeling that this was something of a slight upon him that his son refused to visit him. Both parties said some harsh words when Eldarion interrupted a visit by Reynion to his sisters. Once again, Reynion left, this time building a flet somewhat farther from the family home. This happened several more times, until now Reynion is completely estranged from his family.
FIRST POST:
Reynion strode down the halls of Thranduil, lost in thought. He heard voices ahead of him and almost turned around to take another route. He thought he recognized one of the voices as one of the Elves he’d grown up with. Ghiorden, he thought. Oh, and the elvenmaid was one of Ghiorden’s old archery students, the one with the incredibly long name. She seemed to be uncomfortable. So of course he had to step in and “rescue” her.
“Ihwestaieleva. They are expecting us. If you’ll excuse us, Ghiorden.” To himself he added, and I hope he takes the hint. I don’t really want to explain the situation if indeed I’m understanding it correctly.
The other Elf nodded, disappointment slightly lining his face. “See you later then, Ihwesta.”
Ihwesta slumped her shoulders as Ghiorden drooped away. “I feel so . But there’s something peculiar about him and I don’t trust him at all.”
Reynion stopped, a little embarrassed at being confided in by a comparatively young elf, and a maid to boot. “Yes, he is eerie, I’ll give you that,” he agreed for lack of anything better to say.
“I know he wants to work with Minyahiniwen at the shop but, well, she’s picky about her work and only Orodhîn knows how to fletch or polish just the way she wants it. I wonder how long he’ll be at it.”
Reynion was saved from having to answer that by their arrival at the Council doors. Once inside, he slipped away from Ihwesta and stood in the shadow of one of the pillar-trees. The tidings were worse than he had realized. A spider or two was one thing, but accomplished scouts and trackers just disappearing? That didn’t make sense. Suddenly he was very glad that he’d returned to this area, even if it did bring him into closer quarters with his father than he would have liked.
As the arguing escalated, he decided to go, especially when two young elvenmaids volunteered. It wasn’t that he disparaged their skills, mind, he just didn’t think it right for them to be among so few. Besides, [Elves #4 & 5] were not among his favorite people. It would be nice to be in the right for once with them.
“I may be how you say ‘blinded with honor’, but to me that is a credit in itself,” Reynion stated blandly. “And I am neither foolhardy nor is my reasoning for reverence false. You have everything I can offer,” he said, bowing low to Thranduil and then looking towards Ceros. “I will go.”
Well, now I’m in for it, he silently laughed at himself. Well, one thing about this mission. His sword and knives would be much more practical than his sword.
********************************************
Okay, I inserted Reynion's name in wherever it says [Elf # 3] because those lines and actions seem to be more like the sort of thing I'd expect of him. If that causes problems, I can change it (though I'd really rather not.)
This is my first real RPG, so go easy if I seem a little odd.
How many RPG’s on the Barrow Downs are you currently involved in? One, ends tuesday.
Have you posted in The Green Dragon Inn or in The White Horse in Rohan? – YES – Which one? Both
For your character please include:
NAME: Airelómë Firith
AGE: 1867
RACE: Silvan Elf
GENDER: Male
WEAPONS: Airelómë has a long, slightly curved sword with fine lines running down its flat representing vines. He also likes to carry a medium length bow (about half his height) carved from ash. In his belt he has a long dagger, which he normally uses for carving extra arrows.
APPEARANCE: Medium length dark golden hair. It is quite often plaited at the sides to keep it out of his grey eyes. He is of average height and wears dark greens and greys so that he can hide easilly in the darkening Greenwood. He is sometimes seen frowning, thinking about the evil growing, but it isn't something he often does. Airelómë is a swift runner and a good climber.
PERSONALITY/STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES: Airelómë has a lively character when amoung friends, but can be very solem at times. He is extremely kind and cares deeply about his friends and their safety. Airelómë smiles most of the time as he is always cheerful, as long as nothing is troubling him. His strengths are his ability to make friends and protect them at his own cost, but he trusts people too easily. He is often taken in by people's lies and it has got him into trouble on more than one occasion.
HISTORY: Airelómë grew up in Greenwood and became part of the guard when he was still fairly young. However, he soon decided the guard was not for him, and gained permanent leave. He learnt many fighting skills when he was in it and now that Greenwood has begun to grow dark, he is using the skills to kill anything evil he encounters, if he can defeat it. His parents are connected with the trading between Greenwood and surrounding areas, but have little work now because the free peoples of Middle Earth are being to want nothing to do with Greenwood. Airelómë has often wondered what is causing such a fair place as Greenwood to become so dark, and wants to find out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Airelómë sat in a tree, a breeze blowing through the leaves causing them to make a sweet rustling noise. He sighed. Things were getting so bad now in Greenwood that seeing elves out in the forest was a rare sight. Airelómë neatly re-did his plaits, which he had taken out, to stop his dark golden hair blowing across his face. He looked to his right and nearly fell out of the tree in shock.
"Seré," exclaimed Airelómë. "You climb these trees too swiftly and silently. What is it?" He added, seeing the expression on his friend's face.
"A meeting has been arranged. Ceros intends to stop this evil growing before it destoys us. It will be held soon, in a few minutes I think. I thought I ought to tell you."
"Thank you Seré," shouted Airelómë as he climbed down the tree. He ran though the forest as fast as he could, his feet carrying him more swiftly than they had in a long time.
Airelómë walked down the corridor toward the meeting hall. The growing darkness needed to be stopped, and when something was done he wanted to be part of it. He didn't just want to be, but felt he needed to be part of it. Perhaps it was because his parents were loosing out on work now there was less trade, or perhaps he just wanted an adventrue, but he would help in whatever way he could.
As he entered the hall, he realised he was late, as per usual, and quietly sat at the back. Ceros, an elf Airelómë had seen and heard of but never spoken to, began talking and Airelómë listened intently, suprised when several elves interupted. When he heard that the company was to only be of nine elves, Airelómë knew he must join. He rose at the end of Ceros's speach and said what he had to say, though he had heard elves say it would be dangerous.
"Ceros," he began. "I am Airelómë Firith, and I will help you. But where will the quest lead us? Where do you think the darkness arises from?"
Ceros explained to everyone that their journey would take them to the southern parts of Greenwood and back again. He also said that both male and female elves were needed for each is skilled in their own way. Missing elves were mentioned, which Airelómë had heard before, but he had not heard which elves until now. Though he was not familiar with the names, they were elves all the same and needed to be found. Airelómë would not let the thought that they could be dead enter his mind.
"I too will join the company," Airelómë said after seven or eight others had.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry it's short. I'll try and add somemore, but I wanted to get it done before I went offline so I'm in with a chance of joining ^_^
Too bad Elentari! Bye bye. We'll dispose of Airelome. See below:
Outline for The Fall of Greenwood the Great:
Once the elves have gathered by the riverside and Arien gives the go-ahead, Ceros will lead the fellowship into the forest.
A few days into the trek (which will be summed up in one post) we start a fire and attract spiders—though we don’t know they’re spiders—and Airelome goes to investigate and doesn’t return. Whether that’s by the spiders of something else we’ll never know.
**Spiders: It is the multiple spawn of Shelob that infests Greenwood during the infestation of the Necromancer. I’m going to assume that the spawn of Ungoliant was present in Greenwood, but extremely rare. Therefore the company can believe that giant spiders are a myth until they are proven wrong.**
Then we begin our journey towards the south of Mirkwood—Dol Guldur.
Four days after they loose Airelome, a black mist covers the forest with its web that even the elves cannot see through and they stumble into a spider web.
After their escape they come upon a river, rushing too fast for any to swim and to wide for any to jump. They must find a way to get across.
On the other side awaits darker things that were not able to cross the river into the brighter parts of the realm. They are immediately attacked by orcs.
After a narrow defeat, they find sanctuary in a cave before torrential, black rains pound the forest. This floods the river and causes more problems for the elves that they circumvent only just.
They are now very close to Dol Guldur. It is now only a matter of days...
We will decide when the time comes what they find or do not find at Dol Guldur.
If you want to add some more obstacles for us to encounter post your idea here and either Arien or I will approve and add it to the Outline.
Try to read all you can about Greenwood during the infestation of the Necromancer so that you don’t post in the wrong.
Here is a good site: The Encyclopedia of Arda (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm)
There's also a fantastic book out there called the Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Core Book. It's brilliant. I bought it months ago for $40 (I'm kicking myself now) because it's on sale for $5.95. Yeah, feel my pain. Anyhow, Barnes and Nobles are selling them and they WILL go on sale. heh
Eladain Moruviel: If you can hurry to our Barnes and Noble that's where it is! I think I'm going today so if it's still there I'll pick it up for you. And we have to fence!!
Hey all, hate to do this, but I am going to this Cheer camp this week and I won't be able to post. I PROMISE I will post again when I come back, for I am tired of quitting on RPG's in the middle of them. I love this RPG and believe me, I will miss it so much when I'm gone. But anyway, I will be back on Saturday and I was hoping that you guys could do my character for a week cause I'm leaving tomorrow morning. This will be the last time I get to get on so I hope you all understand. Thanks!
NO problem Eruwen, this is expected during the summer vacations.
Which reminds me. If you are going to be absent during this RPG, please let us know so that we can work around it and decide how your character will be carried on and exactly what you want and don't want to happen to your character.
Thank you.
Great job everyone! You're doing a brilliant job thus far so let's keep going!! I'll give everyone another morning+afternoon to post their character's view thus far on the situation and then we'll camp and *tear* Airelome shall also disappear...
Be aware that Sauron is still in possession of his body as of now so it will not be some character of black burning flesh we have a chance of coming into contact with. He is a flesh and blood man. Read up!! smilies/biggrin.gif
I'll do well to put snid-bits of necessary information up now and then to help us get a better view of where, when, and what is going on around this time in ME history.
So so far is everyone having a good time ... any questions? comments? Keep up the good and interesting work!!
Maika thank you for posting in my place, I was absent as I was getting the Internet connection upgraded and so was unable to get on.
So fare you are all doing a great job, and can we remember to keep Eruwen in our posts, so not as to loose the character completely.
In my post I mentioned that we found footprints, just to let everyone know Ceros thinks that they belong to Orcs but does not want to say.
Ok thanks…
Hi everyone
just to let you know, I have posted my characters thoughts on the past events and moved us on to camp smilies/wink.gif
I thought camp would be a good oppertunity for some more character interactions, but as I could not decide which one of the superbly variated characters to interact with first, I just left my post open to anyone who wishes to join Taurëwen, gathering fire wood. smilies/biggrin.gif
Heyho!
I hope I haven't broken any elvish idiosyncratic rule by having Ihwesta and Arie enjoy a little hunting game.
Everdawn: I know, I'm aware that in your bio it is said that "Arie will never kill a creature of grace." If you want me to, I'll switch out your character for another in my post (because Arie aims at a deer), or I guess I can change the animal if you can think of one that will do well in its place.
Kates Frodo Temp: Your character is the only sort of 'idle' one that I would be able to switch out with Everdawn's should she decide that she doesn't want her character to attempt to kill a stag. If she wants me to take Arie out of my post, would it be okay if I substituted your character?
Alright that's all and great posting guys!
Reyn's worried about his companions, himself, and his home. He's stressed and that makes him lose his temper. It wouldn't have made me mad if you'd made him look bad, he's something of a jerk anyway. smilies/smile.gif
I hope that made sense. If it didn't, let me put it this way: Feel free to dislike Reyn. I won't mind.
He is going to apologize to Gilbereth. Eventually. Someday. (like when this is just a story to tell their grandchildren. smilies/wink.gif ) No, probably in one of my next posts.
Hey sometimes its a LOT of fun to have the hated character (though id say that Gilbereth isnt hated by everyone!) I myself had Énien in Truth in a Dark Place and she was a real B***h at the start (hey Arien and Makia!) but that was what made it fun!
And for the record, Arië hates no one, she is very gentle and empathetic, although she is not liking the tones that fellow elves are taking towards eachother... Not thats bad. (again) it makes for a good story line...
Anywho good job mates with your posting. A few typos here and there and if you catch them re-reading over your posts please take the time to edit it out. It makes the reading easier and more fluent for others to read--not that many do however. It's all brilliant work!!
[EDIT]: One more thing, Tinuviel: I wouldn't break the slight enmity between Gilbereth and Reynion. I like reading about it.
Eladain: I altered my post a bit from when you read it at my house to when I posted it after you left. You might want to re-read it. *ehem*
In my post--which everyone has seem to consent with since there have been no alterings suggested!--it follows thus:
“He’s a fop,” Reynion said in undertones so that Gilbereth might not hear. “If you think there’s hope in him, you teach him.” Ihwesta’s firm countenance faltered but her voice carried on.
“I will,” she said evenly. Then catching Gilbereth’s eye and beckoning him to join Arië and herself, stalked away from the seething Reynion.
If, Tinuviel you wish to teach Eladain's character I will have to edit my post. I'll need you both to please clarify!
As for me it's not a big deal. If the two of you are set on collaborating your characters in such manner I'll alter my post but I would like it to be clear. Thanks!
Here again is the outline for the RPG. We should get going soon to stumble into the mist or what-not.
Outline for The Fall of Greenwood the Great:
Once the elves have gathered by the riverside and Arien gives the go-ahead, Ceros will lead the fellowship into the forest.
A few days into the trek (which will be summed up in one post) we start a fire and attract spiders—though we don’t know they’re spiders—and Airelome goes to investigate and doesn’t return. The fellowship goes to search for him and are attacked.
**Spiders: It is the multiple spawn of Shelob that infests Greenwood during the infestation of the Necromancer. I’m going to assume that the spawn of Ungoliant was present in Greenwood, but extremely rare. Therefore the company can believe that giant spiders are a myth until they are proven wrong.**
Then we begin our journey towards the south of Mirkwood—Dol Guldur.
Four days after they loose Airelome, a black mist covers the forest with its net that even the elves cannot see through and they stumble into a spider's lair...
After their escape they come upon a river, rushing too fast for any to swim and to wide for any to jump. They must find a way to get across...
On the other side awaits darker things that were not able to cross the river into the brighter parts of the realm. They are immediately attacked by orcs...
After a narrow defeat, they find sanctuary in a cave before torrential, black rains pound the forest. This floods the river and causes more problems for the elves that they circumvent only just...
They are now very close to Dol Guldur. It is now only a matter of days...
Eruwen: To clue you in: Ihwesta and Arie were hunting and heard something they couldn't identify moving through the woods. When they returned and were sitting around the campfire, Arie sensed it again and Airelome went out after it.
After a long while when he didn't return, the fellowship suspected the worse and decided to go after him. Then Gilbereth and Reynion quabbled and Ihwesta stepped in defending Gilbereth. Then Ihwesta and Arie were sent ahead of the group to track ahead.
They were attacked by spiders! Eek!! smilies/wink.gif Now they know that the spawn of Ungoliath is not legend but true and Ihwesta and Arie saw Airelome killed by a spider (he had gone mad for some yet unknown reason, but only Arie and Ihwesta know that he was crazy).
Then they continued on to camp and recover (the only wound attained was a slap -from Airelome- on Ihwesta's face). Everyone else is fine. Taurewen and Reynion together killed a spider, Ceros and Gilbereth killed a spider, and Ihwesta and Arie killed a spider. It would appear as though it was a two man job eh?
I think that's as far as we've gotten.
Alright. I've posted for the last time in a week. Hopefully I left off at a good place for people to make replies and such.
The next week can be spent getting through the dense fog--which is yet a primitave, though strong, form of Sauron's Shadow. It should cause depression and hopelessness--things the elves will have to overcome to get through it safely. A few could even get lost for a while until the fog subsides.
All I ask is that Ihwesta and Arie sort of stay together since Everdawn is going to take over my character. That way it won't be too difficult for her.
It wasn't long before she felt someone beside her watching her work, she inclined her head and found herself looking straight into the soft blue-gray eyes of Gilbereth, he tensed slightly at her gaze, she smiled and he relaxed instantly. "Would you like to try?" she asked indicating the knife and the half whittled shaft in her hands, his eye's widened in mild surprise, "I don't think ...." he began, "Nonsense, it's easy" she interrupted pleasantly as she pressed the knife and branch into his hands.
The deer handled knife sat comfortably in his right hand, but he looked nervously at the half whittled branch in his left, awaiting her instruction. "Follow the grain and let the wood be your guide," she whispered softly as she put one hand round his and the handle of the knife and used the other to help him steady the branch , she closed her eyes and lovingly ran the blade down the length of the branch, in one fluid stroke, again and again she repeated the strokes slowly turning the branch in their hands. "see!" she smiled opening her eyes and looking down at the straight shaft that sat in their hands. She then lifted one of the silver arrow heads and showed him how to bind it to the shaft.
He watched intently as she showed him how to cut the feathers into flights and how to attach them to the other end of the shaft, he then handed her back her knife and took out a narrow bladed dagger of his own, He picked up a fresh branch and began to whittle it down for himself.
Taurëwen watched Gilbereth work the wood in his hands, the young noble seemed to take a great pride in his work, She nodded her approval as he held a finished arrow in his hand, as Gilbereth picked up another branch, she thought about the fact that he had no bow, it was then that she remembered the large branch that she and Reynion had brought to Ceros.
As she looked around the camp she saw the branch at Eurwen's feet she walked over and smiled at the elven woman, as she gently picked up the branch and took it back to her seat, the large branch would make an average sized bow, crude though it would be. Her hands worked lovingly carving the bow shape, as she worked she thought of those who had been lost to the growing shadows. Without realising it she had carved the image of the trees that had been damaged into either end of the bow, majestic and proud as they were before their marring. she then searched in her pack for the spare bow strings she carried.
After stringing the bow she picked up an arrow and nocked it to make sure they would fit, it felt comfortable in her hands almost as if the wood itself approved of her work. The bow was only waist high, but sturdy and durable. She turned back to Gilbereth and looked at him trying to find something unique to him to add to the bow, her eyes fell across the crest on his buckler, she delicately carved the hand bearing a branch, then underneath it she carved the sword bearing the delicate elven script " Do not draw me without reason, do not sheath me without honour." This carving sat just below the tree at the top end of the bow and at the bottom she carved the Elven runes of friendship and protection and also the elven words *"Nailya pilind rip linta'ar anwa." then down the length of the bow she carved the leaf pattern that she had seen on his court finery, the few times she had ventured to the courts of their realm.
Once finished she took out a small pouch of green powder and mixed it with a little water , she then dipped her knife point into the green liquid and traced the tip around the intricate carvings. The design on the bow now stood out a vibrant green against the slivery grey of the wood. She wiped the knife clean on her green skirts and slipped it back into its sheath.
She smiled approvingly as she turned back to Gilbereth, the young elven noble had managed to whittle and fletch fifteen arrows for himself, some of them could have been better, but this was his first attempt she reminded herself. "Is this enough" he asked uncertainly, "Yes, I think so" she smiled. She noticed Gilbereth staring at the bow in her hands, "Do you like it" she asked holding it out for him to examine, "It is wonderful " he replied taking it from her, and examining the design, his eyes widened as they fell on the crest at the top end of the bow, "this is the crest of my house!" he exclaimed.
"Only fitting for a bow belonging to one of that house" she chuckled lightly.
"for me!" he exclaimed, His thanks shining on his elven face.
"It is crude by elven standards and I do not have any wax with which to add as a protective finish," she replied frowning slightly.
"Do not frown my lady, I can only but hope that I can learn to use it with as much skill as the hand that made it" he smiled genuinely.
"for that you will require the aid of another for my bow is used only to stop those who would think to destroy or mar our woodland realm," she told him, not at all abashed at her words.
"I understand and would not trouble you further, Ihwesta has offered to teach me" he replied.
"yes, I think the bowers daughter would make an excellent teacher," she smiled back at him, "she may even have wax with which to finish the bow and maybe even something with which to make a quiver for your arrows." she told him.
Taurëwen and Gilbereth talked together for sometime, he told her tales from the courts and she spoke of the simple pleasures of the woods surrounding their home, others joining the conversation when they had something to add or to object.
Thanks! ~~ Piosenniel, Shire Moderator
_________________________________________
Fellow Shire Gamers:
Please read before posting further on the Discussion Thread
Our gaming comes with a cost; it is time to reflect on this fact and make some changes to how we run our games.
We RPG’ers use the most Barrow Downs resources. We use a game thread, a discussion thread, PMs to plan games, and are constant visitors to the site, often returning more than two or three times a day to keep up with developments in the game in order to prepare our own posts.
Why is this a drain on BD resources? Please take some time to read carefully and reflect seriously upon the Barrow Wight's recent posts in the "Announcements >> The Barrow Downs" forum concerning storage space and bandwidth, chat and discussion, and the costs of running the site, and then change your posting habits.
What this means is that our Games, because we need to be so active in them, and because the Shire has so many going at once, cost the site much more money thanother topics and forums on the Barrow Downs. In order for us to continue to have a good number of quality games for Shirelings to play in we need to make some changes:
What you, as participants in this game can do, personally:
What are the most beneficial changes in our posting habits? For one, we need to stop using the discussion threads for off-game-topic chatting, for personal comment. We need to restrict our posts to discussion of the games only, that is, to issues of plotting, character interaction, clarification, and notification of absences.
For most occasions, we don't need to make multiple posts about why we are absent or how we are doing and we don't need to make a string of 'see ya' posts in reply.
For personal comments, we can use the chat room or PM’s. (It’s ok to say a short ‘Nice post!’ or ‘Great post!’ if it is included with a post that has some other on-topic game information/requests on it.)
Please take the time to do several things:
Keep on topic for the Game.
Delete posts or run of the mill comments in the discussion thread that have no bearing on the game.
Refrain from such posts and comments in future discussions of the games.
Limit your daily visits to the thread.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ *+*
READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY. ALL GAMERS WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR UNDERSTANDING THESE CHANGES.
What we, as Shire Moderators, will be doing to insure these changes are being made:
We will be following the discussion threads more closely now. When we see an off topic post – we will give the poster a warning by PM and place a post on the Discussion Thread with the poster’s name on it and a request to remove that post.
Once the warning is given, all future off-topic posts by that poster will be deleted, and that poster runs the risk of being asked to leave the game by the Moderator if such behavior continues.
The Moderator also has the option to close the Game and Discussion thread if gamers cannot stay on topic in the Discussion Thread. It will then be up to the Owner and the players to sort out problems, by PM or email, and make an agreement to keep on topic. Owners may then contact the Moderator to reopen the Game.
*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ *+*
If we all help out, we can ensure that our games remain treasures in the Barrow Downs.
Thanks for being responsible gamers and conscientious members of the Downs!
Outline:
YOU ARE HERE:
Four days after they loose Airelome, a black mist covers the forest with its net that even the elves cannot see through and they stumble into a spider's lair...
After their escape they come upon a river, rushing too fast for any to swim and to wide for any to jump. They must find a way to get across...
On the other side awaits darker things that were not able to cross the river into the brighter parts of the realm. They are immediately attacked by orcs...
After a narrow defeat, they find sanctuary in a cave before torrential, black rains pound the forest. This floods the river and causes more problems for the elves that they circumvent only just...
They are now very close to Dol Guldur. It is now only a matter of days...
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
We will decide when the time comes what they find or do not find at Dol Guldur.
If you want to add some more obstacles for us to encounter post your idea here and either Arien or I will approve and add it to the Outline.
Alright. It looks like people want to get split up? So far it seems that Eruwen, Taurewen, and Gilbereth have gone off, and Tinuviel, do you want Reynion to get lost by himself? That leaves Ceros, Arie, Ihwesta, and Ainemetion.
Does anyone think we should reunite before we hit the spider's lair? Or should some of us get caught in the spider's lair and the rest find them and have to save them? Any ideas? speculations? impulses? smilies/biggrin.gif
Before anyone posts again let's decide who's getting lost and who's not. I would like for my character to be part of the larger group(?) or at least a group. Anyone have specific preferences whether it be group size or people within?
I think I also go for #2, Nerindel. #1 is alright, but not as fun. And #3 is not as sensible.
I mean, if you think about it, it would be like about 5 ppl getting captured and 3 rescuing them. That would be putting huge hero stuff on our characters...not that I'm against that smilies/wink.gif, I just think it would be better for the larger group to save the smaller one.
Everdawn: Group A: Ceros, Ihwesta, Arie, Reynion and Ainemetion.--Though Reynion is soon to be split from us. And Group B: Eruwen, Taurewen, and Gilbereth are in the other one. I think Group A should stay as is (except for Reynion) because they need to be able to rescue Group B--if this is the consensus.
So far it seems that Group B is going to walk into the lair first and meet with the spiders. The fog will clear enough for Group A to find them and still remain somewhat shielded from the spiders. Group A will need to come up with a plan to rescue Group B.
* * * * * * * *
This stuff seemed very compulsory and useful:
Information from The RPG Core Book: Small Giant Spiders can make their victim weak with a bite that injects poison into the person. They weave thick, sticky webs that are near impossible to break through.
Large Giant Spiders have a stronger bite that could be lethal to smaller prey--elves could probably withstand this better than other races (aside from dwarves). Their webs are probably stronger too.
Description: These horrible creatures, the children of Shelob and her kin, infest parts of Mirkwood and also live in other dark and evil places of the world. ALthough not smart, they are crafty, and can speak Westron (Common) in creaking, hissing voices.
Yes, our foe speaks! Spooky wooky.
More Information on Dol Guldur (this is the correct spelling): Dol Guldur ('Hill of Sorcery'), a dark tower atop a sinister hill, was responsible for the evil that turned Greenwood the Great into Mirkwood. Under the guise of the Necromancer’, Sauron used this as his new stronghold when he once again took physical form in Middle-earth, long after the loss of the One Ring. Even after he retook Mordor and rebuilt the Barad-dûr, he kept Nazgûl at Dol Guldur to menace the North. It was here that Thráin, son of Thrór, died after Sauron captured him and, under torment, took from him the last of the Seven Rings. Only one foe of Sauron ever entered Dol Guldur and escaped, no less than Gandalf the Grey himself, and even he was sore put to it.
Little is known of the interior of Dol Guldur, either the tower itself or the extensive dungeons delved below. No doubt it is foul and evil place, filled with Nazgûl, Orcs, wicked Men, Wargs, and many other dark and fell things in service to the Lidless Eye. Only the boldest and mightiest adventurers would even dare to approach it, much less enter it.
* * * * * * * *
I know it says that only one of Sauron’s foes escaped but for the sake of RPGing(!) we could always have one or two of our group return and decide to keep their adventure hushed. That would explain for it not being recorded in history.
Does anyone have anything they want to add? Ideas? This is really fun!!
Eladain there is plenty of opportunities for Gil to die in battle once we cross the river, as far as I can tell by Miaka's wonderful outline. But if you decide you wish gil to be killed by the spider/s? pm me and let me know what you have planned.
Rue, Ruta Graveolens: a sour smelling periennial with round leaves, also called 'the herb of grace'. Used to treat venomous bites. Do not use internally!
this might be a good herb to use to counter the effects of the poison, but Taurëwen also has some posion antidotes already prepared in her herb satchel,Do any of the other elves have herblore skills? if not it will be intresting to see how you will get the information required from a drowsy/delirious Taurëwen? smilies/eek.gif
a drowsy/delirious Taurëwen
*blinks in surprise* Whoa, that one caught me by surprise. Hey, Nerindel, remember what we discussed via PM? That could be a good reason for Reyn's wound to go untreated long enough. After all, Taurewen can hardly treat his when she's hardly at full capacity herself...
Yes, Reyn is going to get wounded, but I'm not sure how anymore, cause Maika said that they weren't going to run into either friend or foe in the mist, so...maybe he could run into one of the spiders while it's away from the lair hunting or something. I guess my post will be a little shorter than originally planned.
cause Maika said that they weren't going to run into either friend or foe in the mist
Right, Group B should probably walk into the lair when the mist is still active. Perhaps they get trapped in the webs then? Anyhow, the mist will clear eventually and Group B will realize where they are too late. The spiders will attack as the mist no longer effects their sensory perceptions.
Group A will come upon them later on to rescue!
Tinuviel: Don't be too arbitrary with what happens to Reynion--we don't want to get too sidetracked from the outline. I'm excited to see what you come up with!!
Well, like I said, I'm not sure how he's going to get wounded anymore, so...
What if he gets 'unlost' (if that's a word) after the mist lifts, finds the spider's lair, and does his best to get himself killed trying to rescue Group B by himself, gets wounded, and falls back, just in time to meet Group A when they're coming in and goes back in for another try?
I apologize if that was garbled, I'm a bit short on sleep. (A state that seems to be chronic ever since I discovered the Downs...)
Oh bother ... we're losing male elves! Would anyone be willing to take over Ainemetion? If not, I will, because he'll be good to sacrifice at Dol Guldur along with the other voluntary heroes! smilies/biggrin.gif
Tinuviel: Not garbled at all! That's a great idea! Have a go at it!
Everyone: The plan is for Group A, Group B and Reynion to split up. During the separation they can pretty much do anything just remember they can niether see nor hear. Then, when the mist lifts, Group B will stumble into the lair. Then Reynion will find them and try to get them out on his own. If Tinuviel still wishes it, he can be wounded, and then Group A will come in to help him and get a very drowsy Group B out alive.
We have seven more weeks and we're about one third (?) of the way through our outline. We're doing great!
Anywho, we should give ourselves enough time to figure out what it is we're going to find at Dol Guldur and who is going to make it back and who is not. SO! By Saturday, Sept. 6, we should be at Dol Guldur. Sound good? (Yeah I know ... I'm the master at strategic planning ...) smilies/rolleyes.gif
D'accord, I've hinted that the mist is beginning to 'lift' slightly so things will begin to get moving again in the forest. With a two-foot scope, animals will be convinced enough to get out and start moving around slowly. So whenever Group B wants to run into something very large, sticky and strong ... go right ahead!
I want to clarify something for future indication:
Rule # 20. from the Red Book of Westmarch:
Clarification of using 'SAVE' in an RPG
Reasons: Often, writers, because of work schedules, or time zone differences cannot post when the majority of the other players are on. In order to keep the game rolling along, they will post a 'SAVE' when they note a part of the game they need to respond to. They can then make their posts when their schedules are free to do so.
Uses: To provide an opportunity for the writer have a space where he/she can insert a post so that it will follow logically in the storyline.
Rules: Keep the 'SAVE' option to a minimum. Don't use it for a crutch, thinking you will get back to the post later - this usually doesn't happen.
*'SAVE's should be gone back to and posted on within a 24 hour time period (& preferably less time than this).
'SAVE's should contain a brief, even one sentence description of what the poster intends to post about.
Other writers are free to post after a 'SAVE' has been put on a space. It is the responsibility of the writer who has posted the 'SAVE' to work within the posts before and after it.
If you decide you are not going to use a 'SAVE', then it is your responsibility to DELETE it from the game.
I don’t have a problem with using ‘SAVE’s because sometimes they are necessary. However, I don’t want the RPG to be a list of consecutive ‘SAVE’s. There aren’t any interweaving plots and vast amount of players in this RPG so it’s really unnecessary to use them so often.
Just because you put a ‘SAVE’ up, doesn’t mean that the situation won’t have changed by the time you get back to it. Putting a ‘SAVE’ will not pause the game for you. Sorry.
*If you don’t post within 24 hours of your ‘SAVE’—unless reason for this is acceptable such as absence and necessity of your character’s reflection is needed—the game will continue to move on disregarding the empty ‘SAVE’.
Thanks!
Nerindel---
Just to let you know, you mentioned something in your latest post about Eruwen having a sword. I think the quote was...
She could hear Eruwen's bow ringing or was it her sword she could not tell over the hissing and clacking of the spiders infront of her,
Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that Eruwen doesn't have a sword. I mentioned in my character profile this comment...
She carries nothing other than a wooden bow crafter by her father and a small dagger.
So...ya know, I just wanted to let you know for further posts.
EDIT: Also, just to let everyone else here know...I'm not going to be here Wednesday through Saturday morning. I think that's the 20-23 of August. I could probably squeeze in another post before then, but still.
anyway seriously I think if Maika wants us to reach Dol Guldur by Sept 6th (2wks Saturday) we should move on, after all we still have the river to cross and orcs and other foul beasts that await us on the other side to contend with!
I just noticed this, but what dialogue I gave the spiders looks remarkably like that of Gollum.
Group A: Reynion's wound is kind of messy, so you'll need to wrap it up somehow before you go to rescue Group B. Also, there is no way in all of Arda that he will let on how much it hurts, but allow me to assure you, it is extremely painful.
So let's all give Gil a big hand. He won't be very handy at fighting, but maybe he can use a handgun.He sure is a handsome fellow *starts laughing uncontrollably* *wipes a tear away* Ok, sorry guys, I just had too
*exhales deeply* Phew! That was enervating!
Alright, the battle with the spiders is OVER. We are now moving to a clearing to regroup. Judging by our situation, it will take a good while to recover before we move on again. (Of course this will be summed up in one or two posts). Our next stop will be the river:
After their escape they come upon a river rushing too fast for any to swim and to wide for any to jump. They must find a way to get across.
On the other side awaits darker things that were not able to cross the river into the brighter parts of the realm. They are immediately attacked by orcs.
After a narrow defeat, they find sanctuary in a cave before torrential, black rains pound the forest. This floods the river and causes more problems for the elves that they circumvent only just. (I'm thinking that the cave is sort of ground level to the river so that while the elves sleep(?) the water seeps in and sort of blocks their way out so that they have to swim out of the cave).
They are now very close to Dol Guldur. It is now only a matter of days...
We will decide when the time comes what they find or do not find at Dol Guldur. Please read all you can about Greenwood during the infestation of the Necromancer so that you don’t post in the wrong. Here is a good site: http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm
"Ceros I need you to hold down Gil, I have to sear the stump to stop the bleeding or he will die from the loss!" Ceros did as she asked and held Gil's shoulders. Eruwen her hands heavily soaked in Gil's blood held his legs, realising what Taurëwen meant to do. lifting the now red hot blade from the fire she placed it on Gilbereth's stump searing the end and preventing both the bleeding and any infection. She winced as Gil awoke screaming with the added pain she had inflicted, but it was short lived as he passed out once more, the smell of burnt flesh filled the glade as she made up a yarrow root pulice and applied it to the wound, then with Ceros's help she bound up the stump, telling him to make sure that Gil also drank the sage soaked infusion. "It will numb the pain." she told them softly
Taurëwen then got up and walked, where she did not know or care she just had to get away. She only got as far as the outskirts of the clearing when she fell to her knees, exhausted both physically and mentally. The tears streamed down her face stinging the scratch one of the spiders had given her. "Why is this happening?" she cried staring at her blood soaked hands "I swear that I will not Rest until I see this darkness defeated" she yelled defiantly into the darkness of the trees, then she fell against the nearest tree and let her tears for herself, her friends and the once great wood fall, until her eyes had no more to give.
Arien Ceros helped Taurëwen aid Gilbereth! smilies/tongue.gif
Also Taurëwen is no longer in the clearing, but she left clear instructions to both Arië and Ceros to administor the sage infusion to both Ihwesta and Gilbereth once they regained consciousness. smilies/biggrin.gif
Use some of the destroyed trees to make a pontoon bridge, or a raft
Nerindel
08-29-2003, 12:22 PM
How about this : We attach rope to a tree then with an arrow and we fire the other end across the river into a *gasp* tree, then the lightest and uninjuried amongst us crosses the the rope to the other side and secures it for the others, perhaps even securing a second rope a little higher up, or if we don't have rope we could use the vines??? what do you think ?
Arien
08-29-2003, 12:28 PM
I think Nerindel has the best idea so far, I think a raft would get carried down stream quickly and take quite long to make, longer than the Elves want to stay there anyway.
Great idea!! I'd definitely say put up the second rope too for Gil especially. He'll never make it across on just one.
Make it exciting too! The most fun I had posting was in The Summons (run by Burzdol and Himaran) when we have to cross the Anduin by Amon Hen and we had horses! Oi it was so fun ... yah ... good times ... smilies/biggrin.gif
Sensibly Arie is the lightest and must uninjured so we should probably send her.
Well, Nerindel, if you want since it's your idea, propose the idea then leave off where the company decides on Arie to cross--give in a good fighting word from Ihwesta at her defense--and then Everdawn can post Arie's mini-adventure!
Sound good?
If I may make a suggestion of change to the plan to cross the river...
How about they shoot it into the ground at the edge instead of a tree? Then Arie can walk across (remember the elves doing that in Lothlorien?). For the injured elves (Reyn will not count himself among this category, btw) Arie can tie a rope to a tree at waist height for them to have something to hold onto.
I was thinking for the two elves with injuried legs rather than Gil! I know elven healing is good but not that good that Ihwesta's leg would be healed enough for her balance not to be affected???? Taurëwen's a healer not a miracle worker smilies/rolleyes.gif
I also find it hard to believe that between the eight of us, not one of us had rope, never mind not thinking to use it????
Taurëwen for one has rope:
There on her bed was her pack and as her mother had said, it was already packed, she opened it to make sure everything was there, Lembas, dried fruits and nuts, a pair of beech grey leggings and two spare tunics, spare arrowheads and feathers, several water skins, as healer she needed more for cleaning wounds, rope and a few other things her father thought necessary.
And so does Ainemention:
As Ainemetion carried his few belongings with him wherever he went, he saw no need for delay. Carefully, he checked the items off a mental list. His treasured knives, meticulously sharpened and cleaned, hung crossed behind his back; at his waist he carried a length of rope , a small knife he used for whittling, and a small pouch containing a pair of flints. When sure all was in order, he waited impatiently for the rest of the company. Now that the decision was made, he longed to be off.
Anyway just my observations smilies/wink.gif
smilies/frown.gif Elves are boring. But Ihwesta will probably have a little trouble crossing and those who were a bit dizzy with spider's poison might. Man, why did you have to bring that up?? smilies/biggrin.gif
Oh yeah, and when I said to make it exciting I was very serious. Now that Arie and Eruwen have crossed very easily they're going to have to be there to help rescue whoever falls in. AND I MEAN IT! smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif
Everdawn: Did you miss where I had asked if Nerindel wanted to post first and then you pick up after her? Oh well.
Eladain: I don't care which part of Gil is missing be it his hand, foot, or head! You decided to make him among the wounded and he will be treated as such. So don't "bloody" tell the rest of us what we can and can not do to make his passage across the river safe! smilies/wink.gif Unless you'd rather he fell... smilies/biggrin.gif
It makes more sense, if you go out there looking for him, get attacked and lose more people, it wouldn't have been worth it now would it?
We are trying to be realistic here. Ihwesta has already used that arguement during the mist and it cost the company much. It doesn't make a lick of sense not to go after him now. I'm sure Ainemetion will argue your point, Eladain, but they will look for Gilbereth IT JUST MAKES SENSE. After a few RPG days (consisting of two or three real-life posts) we'll stop and you can do almost whatever you please with him.
if you go out there looking for him, get attacked and lose more people, it wouldn't have been worth it now would it?
It doesn't really matter where we go in the forest we're likely to get attacked anyways.
So let's not argue this point any further. It's really not a big deal.
I can assure you, if it's a retreat, Gil will be there fighting with Taurëwen and they'll both have to be dragged away. Let us pray it won't end in retreat.
Btw, Gil will show up sometime during the battle with the orcs, he would't pass up the chance to kill orcs smilies/evil.gif
okie dokie!
I've posted again smilies/biggrin.gif sorry couldn't wait for the rest of you guys smilies/tongue.gif just impatient I guess smilies/rolleyes.gif
anyway Taurëwen was dragged away by Reynion and now Ceros has ordered us to surround the foul beast!
Is this hill troll Olog-hai?
A race of Trolls of southern Mirkwood and Northern Mordor, Bred by Sauron. Unlike other trolls, the Olog-hai were cunning, and could endure the sun when controlled by Sauron. The Olog-hai used the black speech; they knew no other language.
Taken from the complete guide of middle earth.
maikafanawen
09-09-2003, 01:59 PM
Nerindel: No. This hill-troll couldn't be an Olog-hai.
From The RolePlaying Game CoreBook: Bred by Sauron through his foul arts, the Olog-hai are larger, stronger, swifter, and far more cunning than other Trolls. They do not turn to stone in the light of the sun, and as long as the Dark Lord's will holds sway over them they suffer no other ill effects from it. Filled with Sauron's malice, they dwell in Mordor, awaiting only his word to go to war.
So, as you can see, Olog-hai's only dwell in Mordor. As far as this resource says, Olog-hai probably wouldn't be in Dol Guldur either. However, I'm not sure how trust-worthy this resource is. Does Complete Guide of Middle Earth say anything about the Olog-hai's location in Middle Earth? (Did you notice that a larger, stronger mutant Troll's name is hypenated with an '-hai' just like Uruk '-hai' Yeah I definitely just figured that out. Cool, eh?
More from the book on Trolls: Trolls have extremely tough skin and strong bodies but dull wits. Moreover, Trolls like sunlight even less than Orcs, for if it touches them, they permanently turn to stone.
Trolls are larger than Men and immsensely strong. They make fearsome opponents in battle. They most often wield huge clubs and hammers.
Many types of Trolls exist: snow-trolls, mountain-trolls, stone-trolls, cave-trolls, hill-trolls and others. THey typically live up in the mountains, in caves and caverns where they can hide by day from the light of the Sun. They do not build, though they may dwell within the ruined towers and castles of Men. They are particularly common in the Ettenmoors, the Troll-fells north of Rivendell. They eat flesh, including that of Men, Dwarves, and Hobbits.
Some trolls have more than one head. These monstrous beings, known as ettens, have extra perception due to their mulitple sets of eyes (but are probably not any smarter even with two Troll brains). However, at times the heads argue with each other, preventing the troll from taking other actions.
Ettens sound awesome, yes?
But anyways.... this Troll is a hill-troll from the Gladden Fields (and probably even previously from the Misty Mountains). I think it is the smallest type of troll reaching no more than fifteen feet tall--which is still huge, mind you. It's going to take a LOT to take him down.
Nerindel: Do you think surrounding it we'll have a better chance b/c we'll be attacking him from all sides & confusing him (since he'll be chosing b/w four groups of people) or do you think we should stay together and be strength in numbers? I'm not asking you to edit your post (because that does sort of seem like the better plan), but just consider it a teensy bit.
How are we going to defeat him anyways? His hide is too thick for us to pierce with any sword or arrow that will be fatal to him. Any ideas? Maybe we could push him into the river somehow...
Hey Maika, Thanks for all that smilies/biggrin.gif
Here is the passage in Appendix F of ROTK regarding The Olog-hai:
But at the end of the Third Age a troll-race not before seen appeared in southern Mirkwood and in the mountain borders of Mordor. Olog-hai they were called in the Black speech. That Sauron bred them none doubted, though from what stock was not known. Some held that they were not Trolls but giant orcs; but the Olog-hai were in fashion of body and mind quite unlike even the largest of Orc-kind, whom they far surpassed in size and power. Trolls they were, but filled with the evil will of their master: a fell race, strong, agile, fierce and cunning, but harder than stone. Unlike the older race of the twilight they could endure the sun, so long as the will of Sauron held sway over them. They spoke little, and the only tongue that they knew was the Black Speech of Barad-dûr.
But anyhow as we have established that it is but a mere ordinary hill-troll smilies/tongue.gif I'm sure the eight of us can take it smilies/wink.gif
Yes, I thought surrounding the stupid creature would confuse it, Standing together, I thought made us an easier target for it to squish!! smilies/eek.gif
So they are in Mirkwood later on....very scary thing to come across I'd imagine.
Oh and I meant to mention this earlier. I was thinking about all the stuff we had to do still and I think I want to reach Dol Guldur by Friday, September 12th OR Sunday the 14th. I've got to get together with Arien and make out the rest of the Outline but I'm definitely leaning towards the end of this week. We might skip the flood and just play out the rest of the Troll Fight.
I don't know, what does everyone else think? What would you like to see happen at Dol Guldur?
Hey, it's a troll, why don't we just shove a wand up its nose? It worked in Harry Potter. smilies/biggrin.gif
Seriously though, if the fellowship could kill a cave troll, we can kill a small hill troll. If all else fails, we can lead him into a grove with sunlight in it.
Arien: Please check you're PMs.
Eladain: Well if you've got a wand you're welcome to try but god, good luck! Actually...that idea about leading it into a clearing's pretty good. We could blind him (with arrows or rocks or whatever) and then lead him close enough or pull him with rope or something.
Well, even if we can't get it into a clearing, we can all hide in one and snipe it with our bows. That way it either gets turned to stone if it tries to attack us, or shot to death if it won't risk the daylight.
Alright, Arien and I have come up with the Outline for the remainder of the RPG. So take a look and you may begin posting accordingly.
OUTLINE FOR ARRIVAL IN DOL GULDUR TO END OF RPG
--Defeat hill-troll (nix flood) and get to Dol Guldur by 5 pm Sept 15, B-D time.
--They more or less decide as they look at the tower from where they hide in the woods that they have done what they've come to do and that was discover what has settled in Greenwood. They rest and resolve to go back and tell Thranduil what they've found.
--One person may argue that while they're here they try to find out what happened to the elves who are missing. (This should be someone who has lost a friend/family member).
--They could decide to stay, or they could decide to leave. Either way they're going to be captured by a half-orc and taken to Amon Lanc where they're forced into slavery.
--They will be split up. Females taken to help build things and the males drafted to be in Sauron's army. They will be kept in the same area of the work village however and see each other during the day (which is still very dark because of the fog the Necromancer has produced to allow the orcs protection from the sun) when the orcs cannot work so hot.
--Sauron will not be there. He will be out checking up on other things and therefore will not be included in our RPG. The Elves will be hearing the orcs and so on talking about the “Necromancer”.
--The elves will have to battle with insanity and the various Command spells that will take over their will. Some may even choose to give into the power.
--We will discover the elves. Most will have been taken over by evil and beyond help.
--After experiencing for a spell the arduous tasks demanded of them by Sauron's minions, the elves (including those taken previously that are still sane) will plan and carry out their escape. We will be able to rescue a couple (maybe two or three) of the originally taken elves. These can be either adopted as secondary characters by the Players or taken up by either Owners.
--The elves (the survivors of original company and rescued few) will make it out and head back to the realm.
--The journey back to the realm will be summed up in one or two posts.
--End Monolog where Players tie up loose ends concerning character relationships and other such things.
The game is set to close October the 13th I believe so we have a little less than a month to complete the game. I think this is plenty of time to make out a good 2nd half.
I will be posting shortly this evening to get us in view of the Tower.
Great job everyone!
Heyla!
Um, Maika, Nerindel, and I were discussing something via PM. I don't know how many of you actually remember Reyn getting hurt, but he did. He was bitten by a spider, and the venom has poisoned the wound. It's pretty bad, and Taurewen is going to have to amputate his leg because, well, because that's what I want to do. (I'm so mean to my characters...)
I think we decided that it's going to happen before the elves get captured, but only just.
I'm going to put up a save, to be filled in as soon as I'm certain of exactly what we're supposed to fill in there.
maybe we should start a slave rebellion
As much fun as that would be, Eladain, we'd loose drastically. This is Dol Guldur. A handful of elves vs. an assortment of halforcs, Nazgul, and the whole lot? We wouldn't have a bloody chance.
That did get me thinking though ... on something I'll PM you about the moment I've got a second to.
Tinuviel: See your PMs
I'm going out of town last minute and I leave in about 25 min. This is extremely inconvenient for me because I'm missing SOO much not only on BD but in real life and I'm extremely put out because of it. My relations WILL suffer for this. smilies/evil.gif Anyhow, If I am not able to have extended access to a computer while I'm out of town I'm sure you will all do fine anyways, but just so you know. We've got to get to Dol GULDUR!!! And if I'm not able to post this WEEKEND hopefully someone else WILL! NO LATER THAN SEPTEMBER 21st!!!!! We do not have that awesome an amount of time to spend at Dol Guldur. We've got to get imprisoned, experience the pain and torture *shiver* and get out by September 30th, and finish up the entire RPG by October 3rd. I think it'll work out just fine. I'd hoped to be well into Dol Guldur before I opened the Ambassador's Son *hint hint* (ALL ABOUT THE PIRATES. CHECK IT OUT.) But oh well, it'll work out.
So, I'll try to keep in touch over the Weekend, but please dont' wait around for me. Get a going! smilies/biggrin.gif
We will spend Mon, Tues and Wed morning deciding on whether we shoudl investigate the hill/tower or just return to Thranduil. Then we will get captured and fill a number of good lengthy well developed and descriptive posts on the horrors and great tribulations of Dol Guldur and head home on September 30th, wrapping everything up by October 3rd. Taurëwen slumped against one of the tall trees as she waited for the others, she saw Gilbereth show Ceros the helms that the larger orcs wore, the red eye upon them had made her shiver and although it was just paint she could not shake the feeling that something or someone was watching them!
As she looked round she saw Reynion coming towards her, She managed a weak smile, then gasped as he collapsed to the ground. Fear strengthening her she got to her feet and hurried over to were he had fallen, pushing passed her companions as they surrounded him.
"What happened?" she asked, her face full of concern.
"It's nothing, I--it's nothing. Just tired and I suppose my leg hurts a little. One of the spiders bit it, but it's not bad," Reynion replied.
"Spiders! That was days ago!" Taurëwen exclaimed as she gestured for those holding him, to gently set him down against the tree she had just come from. Kneeling down she ripped open the black makeshift bindings, though she really didn't need to. Reynions lower leg was black and Taurewen knew that even if she was at full strength her innate abilities would not be able to mend the dead flesh, she was surprised that he had even been able to stand, but as she removed the bindings she could see that it was spreading and that there was only one option left to her. She slowly raised her head and turned to Ceros as he stood over her supported by Ihwesta and shook her head, then turning back to Reynion her eyes filled with sorrow she told him that she would have to remove his leg, else the infection spread to the rest of his body.
"I will need water!" she told Ceros as the others again helped Reynion to his feet, He nodded and let Taurëwen lead the way. She had heard a stream to the south east so she made for it the others helping Reynion and the still weak Ceros behind her. 'Why had he not told me of his injury when we returned to from the spiders lair? and why did I not see that he was hurting?" she sighed and as she looked up she saw the stream. Her heart was suddenly heavier that she had ever imagined possible as she knelt down by the stream next to Reynion and told the others that she would require, "water; fire and a sharp long knife or dagger!"
Maika here is may post for Ceros (I know its not long, but I didn't feel the need for it). I think it will work better if you out in Nerindel's then mine and finally Tinuviel's.
“What do you make of this?” Gilbereth said “I found it on one of the dead orcs”
Ceros took the helmet from Gilbereth’s hands and examined it, turning it over and then tracing his left hand gingerly over the red eye. He had never seen any such mark before and he dreaded this new evil that it brought with it. His heart was disturbed by the new findings; no good would come of them.
“This is new to me. I have seen many orc and many have fallen by me. But never in all my years have I seen such markings,” he whispered to Gilbereth, “But no good can come of this finding and I dread that there is worse to come. Thank you for informing me of this Gilbereth. But we can’t delay leaving any longer than we have let us…”
”Ceros!” Hissed Ihwesta coming up behind him. He turned and looked upon her as she motion to Taurëwen. The She- Elf was bent over Reyn, her face full of concern and distress. Ceros threw the helmet to the floor and the three made their way over to Reyn and Taurëwen.
As he drew nearer Taurëwen looked up at him she was very upset as she told them that Reyn’s leg would need to be severed. Ceros rubbed his forehead, this was not good. Reyn was a valuble member of the company, as was everyone else. Ceros could not afford to loose any of them.
“I will need water,” Taurëwen told Ceros as she rose beside him. The others helped Reyn up and Taurëwen lead the way back to the river. The company entered the dark forest again; the air was stagnant and stale and not a sound could be heard but the oncoming river.
When the reached Reyn was lain down onto the hard ground beside the river. Before Taurëwen joined her patient she mumbled under her breath, “Why had he not told me of his injury when we returned to from the spiders lair? And why did I not see that he was hurting?" Ceros replied.
”’Tis not you fault, it is no ones but those wretched creatures,”
He was not sure that she had heard him as she fell to the floor beside Reyn, she told the rest what she would need:
“water; fire and a sharp long knife or dagger!"
Oh and thanks Nerindel for letting us know.
No, my mother has more taste than that and Reyn is not LEGLESS, he still has one of them.
Here's my post:
____________________________________________
Stunned, Reyn could only stare at Taurëwen. "Cut it off? But how—what can—what use could I possibly be with only one leg?" The idea sickened him. Lose the leg entirely? He'd expected to need a long time of recuperation for the wound, but could it really be so bad as to need amputation? There was no way he could even begin to grasp the consequences of such a thing. If he had only one leg, how could he live alone in the middle of the forest the way he did? How would he even manage to live alone among the other elves? He would have to live with his father again. And that he would not do.
"Is there no way to save it?" he asked, not daring to hope. He already knew the answer. If she said that he had to lose the leg or die, she spoke truth. He would be a cripple. A freak. There were no elves that were crippled in this manner. A few Men, yes, but never elves. None he knew of, at least. Surely, surely there was a way to save his leg. He just couldn't face a future of living on the charity of others. The idea horrified him. To depend on someone else for the very staples of existence, that, that would be terrible. He would have none of the independence he so loved. That, most of all, would be the worst thing about this whole business.
"I'm sorry, Reynion."
"You needn't be. It's not your fault." No, no, it was his own fault. He should have done something about it immediately. He shouldn't have tried to hide how bad it was. He should have, he should have. There was no use wasting time this way. "Let's do it." He looked at his legs, and knew that this would probably be one of the last times he would ever see both whole. It was like dying, at least partially.
****
He refused to let her put him to sleep for the operation. It would hurt dreadfully, she warned, but he didn't care. There was no way that he would be sleeping, oblivious to his loss. He didn't want to go to sleep whole, and wake up in pieces. He knew that she would do her best not to cause him undue pain, but he couldn't bear to look into any of the others' eyes. He didn't want to see the pity there. He knew it would be, just as it had been there when Gilbereth had lost a hand to the spiders. It had been in his own eyes, he knew. Somehow, he felt that he could understand the younger elf better now. At least he was given a little time to get used to the idea. For Gil, it had been hardly a moment, in the heat of battle.
They tried to make certain that there were no orcs or spiders about before Taurëwen set up for the operation. It was a surprisingly peaceful glade, with a little stream running through one corner. Reyn knew that Taurëwen had chosen that glade because there was a stream. They would all want to wash their hands once she was through.
"Are you sure?" she asked him a final time, meaning would he please let her put him to sleep for the duration. He shook his head, adamant. He didn't trust his voice. She told him to lie down, and had Ceros and Ainemetion sit one at each of his shoulders, to hold him down during the operation itself. It did not reassure him that she thought he would need to be held down.
He closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them. "Do it." Taurëwen nodded, trying to meet his eyes and reassure him, but he looked away. He didn't want any pity, from anyone. Especially not from her. Instead, he looked at the leg, now bared nearly to his hip. It was swollen and red above the knee, with angry swirls of color around the wound itself, while below the wound was black rotted flesh. It looked like a piece of meat, or perhaps that painter had lost his temper and dashed his palette against the canvas. It felt as though it were afire. He gritted his teeth, as she set blade to flesh.
If he'd thought that it was painful before, that was nothing compared to the pain when the blade parted his flesh and sliced deep into the muscle of his thigh. He arched his back, fighting to keep from screaming in agony. Ceros and Ainemetion leaned on his shoulders to keep him from thrashing. Taurëwen pressed down on his good leg, and sliced deeper into his leg. Reynion gritted his teeth again, determined that he would not scream. By the time Taurëwen had begun to saw through the bone, he wished he'd allowed her to send him to sleep; being awake for this was more painful than he'd imagined. He cried out, the last of his pride eroded by the intense pain.
Then, mercifully, the world went dark.
Reyn woke some time later with a mild headache. It paled in comparison with the dull throbbing pain from what was left of his left leg, but that was a far cry from its former pain and quite bearable. What was unbearable was the fact that his own stupidity in hiding the wound from Taurëwen had cost him his leg entirely. He was a cripple now. He would always be a cripple. For a moment, Reynion nearly gave in to the tears that threatened to seep out of his tightly closed eyes, but that moment passed soon enough. He wouldn't give any more cause for the others to pity him. He would not weep.
Someone tapped him on the shoulder. From the faint scent of herbs, and the gentleness of the touch, he knew it was Taurëwen. She was the last person he wanted to see. He didn't want her pity. He had wanted her affection, even, perhaps, her love. But now, certainly all she would find in her heart would be pity, if even that. He almost would have preferred dying to this half-life he saw stretching out before him. Perhaps there was no 'almost' about it. Perhaps d.eath would be preferable. Perhaps he'd been fooling himself when he thought that Taurëwen might possibly feel anything more for him than respect. And surely even that must be gone now.
He had never felt quite so miserable in all of his thousands of years. All he wanted to do was weep, but he refused to do even that. There would be no more show of weakness from him. His pride was truly all he had left, for his sword was useless, and he had never recovered his daggers from the body of the spider, and how could he manage to shoot a bow with only one leg? And there would be centuries of this, millennia, even.
Taurëwen seemed to sense that he wanted to be left alone, because she said nothing, merely walked away, leaving him with his morose thoughts.
Oh my goodness Tinuviel. That was awesome!! I cried! Seriously, I swear I cried. How Reynion was talking about his halflife and how Taurewen couldn't possibly love him because all she'd feel is pity for him. *sniff* That was one of the best posts I think I've ever read. C'est magnifique!!! *wipes tear*
Right ... to paste ... *sniffs*
