Hello, Gandalf me old wizard! I'm coming, with an oliphaunt and a horse in tow. This should be a fascinating journey.

Bethberry the herbalist/ healer in tow. Is this a walking tour or shall I bring my Bretton mare, Riverdance? My falcon, Wyrd, also begs to join.

erm...whats the actual setting and all?

Elenna:
I hope you're not too emotionally attached to the horse or the oliphaunt. The road holds unknown perils. Good luck.
Bethberry:
Gandalf is on foot, preferring the simple approach at present. Your falcon Wyrd may come along.
Amanaduial the archer:
Please read through the "Let's go to the Prancing Pony!" RP for background information regarding how the On Patrol RP got started. If you are interested in being part of a serious and high quality RP, you can arrange to have your character meet the company along the road ... and if it is decided that your character has anything to offer the group, you will be accepted into the group.

Gandalf!!! Can I join? I'll be Menelduliniel (like I always am), and I'll bring Salkadome, my big, 22 hand black stallion.
I can use daggers, CAN use an bow if forced...and is quite amusing when I try to use a sword...well: I'll go check out the RPG!

I also hope you have a goodly supply of herbal remedies for sore and blistered feet. The whole company will thank you for not having to put up with the kind of mood Gandalf would be in while suffering from foot irritation. smilies/wink.gif
Naaramare:
I admire you for travelling light (though I did caution everyone about food and water rations (except Bethberry, who wasn't present in the room with the rest of us at the time ...). Still, my compliment to you stands, Naaramare. smilies/smile.gif

Hi All,
Just a quick note to say that, when I reread my post asking about going through the Old Forest, I discovered a 'silent' typo, 'usual' when I had meant to type 'unusual.'
So, in revising, I added more about my character's response to elves. Nothing that ruins continuity with your subsequent posts, but just small runination on why Bb is a little perplexed about elves' failure to find joy in each day.
Can't stay to play much today. smilies/frown.gif

Author's Note:
Careful when you go off hunting or looking for herbs around the campsite for the evening supper ... remember, a wagon recently went missing and foul play is suspected. You just never know what type of shady character(s) you may run into out there in the Wilds South of Bree ... Am not planning to have any Orcs show up right now ... (Orcs are rather overdone in RPs and for that reason can be kind of boring anyways, having the same old type of monster all the time) ... but I do have a couple other plans for "surprise visitors" to show up and provide enough risk and danger to keep even the most daredevil Elf on his or her toes.

Birdland
06-20-2002, 06:39 AM
Birdland brushes off her skirt and offers a clumsy curtsey to the noble (she assumes, since most people who speak like Gandalf would be considered noble) Grey Wanderer.
"Hail and well-met, Gandalf the Grey!" (Birdie had heard an elf say that once, and always liked the sound of it.)
I am a humble "skin-changer", raised by the Beorning, but leaving in disgrace when it was discovered I could not "do" bear.
Now most would think that skin-changing would be a marvelous way to make a living, but it hasn't turned out that way for poor ol' Birdie. I can morph into a small black and white crow (good for delivering messages), a small Neekerbreeker (a fine way to watch things unobserved) or a 50' Mulberry Ent (great for seeing long distances, or if you're in the mood for mulberries)
In my last adventure, I was dropped in seawater, and discovered that I could morph into a dolphin. But that wouldn't be much help around here.
But the demand for skin-changing abilities are few and far between, so I can also wash dishes, chop wood, clean stables, and - well - borrow, small, unwatched things. I have a sling! Great for hunting coneys. And my own traveling pack, with a waterbag, cooking gear, flint and steel. I'm all ready!
Now mostly I tend to avoid great people like Elves, Rangers and such, since such folk tend to attract wars and battles like a dog attracts fleas. But to travel with such a wise and erudite Wizard such as yourself would be a wonderful thing. And maybe you can tell me if you've ever found other skin-changers like me?
I know lots of old songs. I can tell some great stories. And I hardly ever, ever steal from my traveling companions. Please, won't you pick me up on the road and take me with you? Please?????
Gandalf_theGrey
06-20-2002, 10:16 AM
Return greetings to you, Birdie.
Hail and well met. * bows a greeting *
Your readiness to put your skin-changing abilities at the service of our group ... one never knows when turning into a creature of air, earth, or water can come in handy (now what of fire?) * wonders aloud * ... and help with chores and the demands of staying alive in the Wilds is noble. We'd be happy to accept, and foolish not to. I hope in turn to be able to live up to your high expectations of me. As for finding other skin-changers like you, that is something that can never be done, as you are so amazingly unique.
I look forward to our exchanging songs and stories, knowing that a star shines on the hour of our chance meeting. smilies/smile.gif

(Birdie curtsies again to the Wizard. My, the noble races do love their formalities!) Indeed, great Mithrandir, I do consider myself unique, but not singular. For the great tome "The Encyclopedia of Arda" makes passing reference to skin-changers other than the mighty race of Beorning.
Since I can only assume my little understood abilities came from the parents who bore, then abandoned me, my opinion remains that where there were two, there may be more. (Barring plague, famine, war and the other daily mischances which Middle Earth is heir to.)
I await your cue to join your merry band, with pleasurable anticipation.
(Whew! Hope I said all that right...)

Hullo Birdie,
Well yes, there are werewolves of course. I'd almost forgotten they might be prowling about along our path, as I'd heard a report of one or two in the Old Forest. And as you said, where there are one or two ...
Please feel welcome to meet up with the company at your earliest convenience. I trust your judgment that your entrance will be fitting to the story at whatever point you make your appearance.

Feadolena Nolfare, many thanks for skinning that badger! (Are they edible? I have no idea, but I know they are common all over England.) I had a reply ready for Moridel's interesting comments about Bb, but by the time it was my turn on the computer (I share this with my kids), the story had moved on too far! I will try to work something in as a backstory without , ah, 'chilling' this new atmosphere.
All, my character has never carried a weapon in the past. Am not sure if she will carry one here....

Note:
Regarding the sword my character purchased from the pawn shop in Bree, I thought that the fair thing to do was to roll a ten-sided die to determine what kind of sword it was. I rolled a seven, meaning that the sword is of Elvish origin.
Based on my long years of role-playing experience, I intend to keep things interesting by rolling dice to determine the success or failure of any swordplay that occurs when I go up against The Fifth and attempt an offensive maneuver. The Fifth is meanwhile welcome to proceed as he has been doing all along, since the wraith character is being portrayed with commendable realism.
Nice posting everyone, much good quality, and it's good to see Naaramare and Elenna step up to the plate. smilies/smile.gif Now where is that Hedgemaiden of ours?

Thanks, Guys. This one is from Alan Lee's painting of the Withywindle. The first one was by Tolkien. It was nice and foresty but not necessarily scary enough. Hullo all,
I believe I am the new visitor that Gandalf was speaking of. Let me give you a little background info on Arcon, my character.
An elda, Arcon has been around since the first age. He serves Cirdan as a captain of the guard in Mithlond. His half-brother Haidan, who served Elrond, recruited Bethberry and Gandalf, and others as well, in a mission to Umbar. Haidan was killed in a troll attack and Arcon resumed the leadership role of the mission after his brother's passing.
This was around the year 2000 T.A. so quite a few years have passed since then. He has not seen either Bethberry of Gandalf in quite some time.
(In case your wondering about the amount of detail in this background, it was another RP in "another land". smilies/wink.gif )

Namaamare,
Thank you for the welcome, and I would like to coordinate with your amnesia with my character if that's alright.
I analyzed your name in Sindarin, the tongue of Arcon. By my translation, it means, roughly, "With Royal Earth". You could take this several ways, but I interpret your name as this:
Elves are of course, bound to Arda, a reason for their immortality, they co-exist with the actual earth they live on. "Royal Earth" could mean a kingdom of some kind, the "with" could mean you are directly connected to this kingdom. Could this mean that Namaamare is of royal blood?
Just some thoughts. What do you think?
The Fifth,
Thank you. It's good to be here!

Hullo all! It seems I've done things backwards as usual - jumped into the RPG before introducing myself.
Holly is a new character, just developing for me. She's a hobbit from Stoor stock - a little larger than the Fallohides or Harfoots, more independent, and inclined to wanderlust, adventurous, comfortable in the water, and quite capable of a certain ferocity if roused. She has just come from visiting friends in the Eastfarthing and is making her way to Tharbad where she has encountered this group on the road. From there, her intention is to go to Isengard and through Fanghorn to the Anduin; then down the Great River to Minas Tirith. From there she wants to go to Pelargir and take the road then to Linhir, where she has a dwelling. The object of this trip is purely for her own curiosity & enjoyment, She is sketching the countryside and sights as she goes and keeping a running description of the trip in her chapbook.
I hope we can enjoy each other's company for as long as our paths run together!

All:
May I direct your attention to the thread called "If You Can Meet Anyone from Da Barrow Downs.." in the Announcements Forum? A historic announcement was made there yesterday ..... I invite you to go take a look.
Also, since I'll be visiting relatives today and tomorrow, I do not expect to have access to a computer until Friday night. But I shall return! smilies/smile.gif
piosenniel:
I look forward to many rewarding interactions between our characters. Miss Holly Stoor sounds intriguing indeed. smilies/smile.gif As for where Gandalf intends to go after Tharbad, I am for now purposely not divulging the rest of his itinerary. If Holly's path diverges from that of the rest of the group, you always have the option of introducing another character.

All:
I am still on the road, with roughly an eight-hour drive ahead of me Saturday morning, to reach my destination of a bonfire deep in the heart of Amish country by 7:00 p.m. Saturday night. I then drive another couple of hours home after the bonfire, making for at least ten hours on the road and an incredibly long stretch with little rest. Thus, computer access will be understandably sketchy / uncertain through Sunday, though I'll do my best to check in.
As for how this affects the RP, please feel welcome to go on ahead with the action and continue your fine job as you have been doing, and I'll have Gandalf reappear and fit in with the action as best I can.

The meeting between Bethberry and myself was truly a most rewarding meeting of friends. One never knows the door to which one's road might lead. No problem, Orofacion - I enjoyed our interchange. While Holly can often be practical and sometimes reticent in her character, she has no qualms about rising to a challenge in an expedient manner. You will find her a good-hearted hobbit, but as ferocious as a wolverine when cornered by evil.

Right, if you are referring to the short lived career of Ulrich the Black, well, he was just some comic relief I interjected into that RPG. He's gone now!
As for Kewl, well, I missed Sunday, so I am not sure how you all reacted, but nevermind, I am role playing in Nine RPGs at the moment, I guess I should take a raincheck on this one.

Gandalf, many thanks for disposing of my sorry self for a bit. I am back from camp now, and ready to return in full force. Hopefully you will be around to explain what you know of the wraith situation, since the wraith seemed to have connexions both to the Downs (out of sheer proximity) and Mordor (the horse and various comments). Both I and Moridel are rather puzzled on that one.
Aww, I missed the songs! Well, I had great fun reading them in any case, and if the occasion arises Moridel shall certainly treat you all to one of her own. smilies/smile.gif
I hope I am doing alright, I have very little experience with RPGs.

* bows an honorable farewell, showing full respect and openness to meeting again at a more fitting future time and place *

Welcome back, it's good to see you.
Have no fear, Gandalf will make a reappearance ... though what he can explain about the wraith ... or chooses to explain, must be limited within the bounds of keeping what the wizard suspects may be the One Ring "safe and secret."
All:
What I envision as far as the timeline is that Bilbo Baggins has retired to Rivendell and been there about a year. Thus Frodo is in possession of the Ring and Gandalf is researching it, but definitely does not have (and will not now discover) all the answers. Meanwhile, Gandalf is also not aware of the ways in which Saruman is secretly working to undermine the integrity of the Shire. Gandalf is simply "On Patrol" at this point, puzzled by the growing dangers that he's heard whispered rumors of. Certainly Gandalf does not suspect Saruman, nor will any evidence pointing to Saruman come to light within this "On Patrol" RPG ... since the aim of this RPG is to remain true to Tolkien's presentation of Lord of the Rings. No mystery will be solved in the "On Patrol" RPG ... simply, this RPG will portray the daily skirmishes that a Ranger or other travellers would face at this time along the roads bordering the Shire.
As for songs, Feadolena, since we're striving to proceed in the best Tolkien tradition, there are bound to be opportunities for the good Hedgemaiden to share a melody along the journey. smilies/smile.gif
And as for your skill in RPGs, Feadolena, if it's true you have little experience, then you must be a natural. You definitely have quite a talent for storytelling.

Orofacion of the Vanyar:
Yes, this new attack action is open for anyone involved in the RP to participate in as they wish.
Please feel welcome to become involved in the melee against the smugglers. Because your character Arcon is around to witness that an ambush has taken place, he can now react.
The reason why Menelduliniel and Estelarion were the only ones hurt is because they drove their horses on ahead of the group and into range of the smugglers' missile weapons. Since the smugglers were hidden, the smugglers had what's known in ancient RP terms as "initiative" and were able to strike first.
As threadmaster, I rolled dice to determine how many smugglers there are, which thrown objects hit and which missed, and then to determine the amount of damage taken by Menelduliniel and Estelarion.
Please feel free to carry on with the story and post as you see fit, Orofacion. Don't worry about what I'm doing with the dice ... just go ahead and post whatever comes natural.

All,
A brief explanation of my recent elvish. Car-mae literally translates in Sindarin to "to do well", that is the closest I could get to "are you ok". Dar-si ned i band sad actually translates to "Stay here in the safe area". If you translate other such similar phrases from their exact language in other tongues, you'll get a similar English translation.
Example: In the french language, "Mais oui" literally translates in English to "But yes". This phrase is used as "Of course" in French. I'm probably just trying to make excuses for my lack of elvish lexicon and grammar, haha smilies/tongue.gif, but it's all I could come up with.

Birdland:
Am definitely looking forward to some rewardingly worthwhile interaction between Birdie and Gandalf, my friend, and having our two characters get to know each other better. smilies/smile.gif I admit that my approach to running an RPG is eccentric when compared to the norm ... The reason why I posted that your character didn't get noticed, is because I was taking into account something known in ancient RPG rules as a "melee round." A melee round is defined as that portion of an RPG in which every individual on both sides, the player characters/company side and the monsters/adversaries side, get to take their turn by choosing an action which fills up a certain amount of "story time." Since Birdland's chosen action had been "running towards the others," ... I took that to mean that she was not within range of being attacked, nor was she in range of, say, holding a conversation with Gandalf, unless it were a far-off shouted one. Okay, so maybe I'm strange. smilies/smile.gif
Also, topping that awesome plot collaboration between you and Bethberry in the scene where Wyrd swoops in to resuce Birdie would've been a tall order. * bows major compliments * smilies/smile.gif
Vanima Edhel:
Your character being unconscious actually goes along quite well with the story and is eminently logical when I look at it from my RPG background. Don't worry though, to my mind, the injuries Menelduliniel suffered should not be fatal and should quickly respond to treatment once you are under the care of a healer. As for Estelarion, his condition is more serious but even he should pull through.
Bethberry and Orofacion of the Vanyar:
I can relate to both the exhaustion and the intrusion of RL "real life" responsibilities this week. Believe me, I'm in a similar situation myself. When you're able to post, your posts will be welcome. * bows *

All:
Thank you for carrying the RPG forward in my absence. This past week, I've been battling water damage in my apartment ... caused by the fact that when the guy upstairs took a shower, the water leaked down into my walk-in closet and caused a mold infestation. We had to rip apart the entire closet, which means that many of my belongings are still strewn all over the floor in my bedroom and living room.
A computer training seminar further ate into my time.
Today, I'm headed out the door to participate in a living history program with the local park system ... good thing I'm an unpaid volunteer, because I'm going to be at least two hours late. Then again, "a wizard is never late, he arrives precisely when he means to." smilies/smile.gif

I took my cue from Oro when he said that we could use the agrimony but he still needed water. I was thinking that this would be an opportunity for your character and Arcon to have a truly 'elvish' discussion, away from those who might not understand or appreciate, especially because of your recent 'memory.'

I was more right than I realized when I jokingly quoted that comment about how wizards are never late. Phenomenally strange, the synchronicity of the timing, and on two counts.
1) First thing out of the supervisor's mouth was, "You're an hour early! Didn't anyone call you?" Seems they had changed the start time from noon to 3:00 p.m. ... and I showed up at 2:00 p.m., unawares.
2) At 2:30 p.m., I looked up from the blueberries I was eating, startled to see two friends standing before me. They had decided to surprise me by showing up with no advance notice. If I hadn't arrived at 2:00 p.m., I would have arranged to arrive at 3:00 p.m. instead ... and missed my friends by a half hour.
As for your artistic excuse, Orofacion of the Vanyar, how about this as an alternative of yours? "Artists are never late ... they just easel into the day." smilies/smile.gif
Naaramare:
Curiosity killed the cat. ... Satisfaction brought it back. The announcement will be worth the wait I hope, and thank you for your kind interest. * bows *

With all due respect, what's up with your last post? It sure doesn't seem to fit with what's going on in the storyline, unless poor Meneli is even more befuddled and lovelorn than I thought. smilies/wink.gif I've sent you a Private Message.
EDIT: Having gone back and read the posts again, the confusion is generated in the combined wording of both Yours AND piosenniel's posts ... piosenniel states that "MOST" are not paying attention to Holly, Meneli declares that "NO ONE" knows where she went. I interpreted "MOST" are not paying attention, to mean that Gandalf was one of the few who did, since he tends to be quite the observant sort and he definitely did notice Holly sitting with an unfamiliar Hobbit.

Yes, I recall. And your meeting with the rangers indeed could have been worked into the story as you originally intended, friend, * bows * ... Frankly, I had been expecting that Arcon would have been present at the same meeting with the rangers that Gandalf and the others were going to attend. To have your own private meeting just seemed a little odd to me ... Since you knew as an author that I as an author had already been planning a meeting with rangers, I would have thought you might have wanted to collaborate with me on it to avoid just this kind of confusion. I guess as threadmaster I'm going to have to keep closer tabs on you when it comes to coordinating things like ranger meetings, eh? smilies/wink.gif
But now that you've described your private meeting with the rangers as being "out of context," in your words ..... well, it only makes sense for it not to take place, wouldn't you say? smilies/smile.gif

Much apologies for my mistake on the board. I need to learn to put in my contacts and not have just woken up when I answer RPG's. I misinterperate things. I thought she said that she CONSIDERED talking to Bird, but thought better of it, since most of the people were deep in conversation. I just reread all my posts from this morning...early...so very early...and found about 14 times when I misread things. Luckily: it's the first time I went online in the morning since I started coming, and I don't plan on doing it again...after all the mistakes it lead me to. Well, I edited the posts, after nearly crying...no worries: I nearly cry about not being able to log online when it's to crowded. Haha...

No need for wink-wink, nudge-nudge about Holly going out with Olo. He offered to fill her in a little on the uneasy atmosphere and the two rushing strangers, but declined to do it in the tavern as he doesn't want to draw attention to himself from shadowy character and their snitches. I'm sure she will have all sorts of gossip and stories and opinions from Olo to reinforce whatever is learned from the meeting eith the Rangers.

Vanima,
Beautiful, I loved the song.
Gandalf,
I hope that my naming one of the Rangers is ok. I thought a conversation with one of them would make them out to be less "warden-ish" like the one that seems to be keeping all the company inside the inn. (Where's the steel bars and the bread and water?) The name is purely conjecture, it has no real bearing lexiconically, if that's a word. smilies/biggrin.gif

Oforacion of the Vanyar:
Yes, it's just fine that you've named the ranger Agluchel. smilies/smile.gif * nods approval * However, there are a couple of geographical references you may wish to correct. Gandalf is currently in Sarn Ford, not Tharbad. And Gandalf was headed South from Bree when Arcon met him, so Arcon would have met Gandalf on the road just north of the Trade Inn.
Birdland Neeker-Breeker:
Curiouser and curiouser. Especially since in your post as it stands at this time, while it is clearly stated that Birdie munches "parchment," nowhere is the parchment positively identified as the one which Gandalf had delivered "air mail" by Wyrd. There's another factor which seemingly has not been taken into account as well ... but it's all good. smilies/smile.gif Please, by all means, leave your post about Birdie in neeker-breeker form munching "the parchment" just exactly as it is. By the power vested in me as official threadmaster / gamemaster, I'm going to determine just how much damage (if any) Birdie has done, and to what, by rolling dice. smilies/wink.gif

On Rolling Dice
Hullo All:
Just thought I'd share with you a little behind-the-scenes information about how it was determined that Birdie had eaten through a letter from Elrond to Galadriel, so you can have a better appreciation of what kind of alternative outcomes may have taken place instead:
To-Hit Dice:
Decided this was not necessary, considering it a given that Birdie succeeded in her chosen action to eat some parchment:
8-Sided Die Roll to Determine Which Parchment Was Affected:
I made a numbered list of eight possible documents (3 of the possibilities I listed twice, since I deemed that these 3 would make for a more interesting storyline than some of the others):
1) Gandalf's message to the Ranger
2) classified (I'm not about to explain just EVERYTHING, since some of these documents might surface at some point in the RPG.)
3) Letter to Galadriel from Elrond
4) classified
... etc, etc
6-Sided Die for Damage Roll:
1) Birdie nibbled the edges of the parchment, found it not to her liking, stopped munching.
2) Birdie ate a modest amount of parchment, enough to leave several holes, however, the document is still quite readable.
3) Birdie ate half the parchment, message can be deciphered enough to get the main idea, but some details are missing.
4) Birdie ate a goodly amount of the parchment, allowing for a few words and phrases to be readable, from which possibly clues could be gathered about the meaning of the message.
5) The message is in tatters and completely useless to communicate anything of value. (I rolled a 5.)
6) Birdie ate the entire parchment, leaving not a single trace of it behind as evidence that it had ever existed. (Good thing I didn't roll a 6, or Birdie would have an even bigger tummyache than what she's got now!)
4-Sided Die Roll to Determine How Many Documents Were In the Ranger's Satchel:
I rolled a one, so the letter from Elrond to Galadriel was the only parchment affected.

As to piosenniel's question: "Should we be worried about the letter that Bird ate? Will there be trouble coming from that?" ...
... Only time will tell. (I could always roll dice, I suppose. smilies/smile.gif) It sure puts a new spin on things for me personally, however. I'd been kicking around the idea that when this particular "On Patrol" RPG ends at Tharbad, that I might start a new RPG dealing with a journey to Lothlorien. An alternative idea would be that when the "On Patrol" RPG ends, I could start a new RPG dealing with Maladil Castle. A third idea would be for me to start an "On Patrol II, The Continuing Adventures" at some point.
In any event, I foresee taking a bit of a break in between the ending of On Patrol and the beginning of a new RPG, maybe even a break of several weeks ... but methinks the best thing to do is play it by ear.

Short characterization footnote about Podo Cotton, regarding the clever plot twist where Olo finds a gold coin dropped out of Podo's money-box and spends it on new clothes for Bird: (Well done by piosenniel: and Birdland, btw!) smilies/smile.gif
If Podo were to find out what happened to his gold piece, he would be okay with it. If Olo had succeeded in getting Podo's attention and tried to return the gold piece, Podo would've just smiled and said, "Ah, keep it. Buy a round of drinks on me." A year ago at this time, Podo was a simple, honest country Hobbit whose biggest vice was thinking up practical jokes that he was always too chicken to put into practice, lest he be thought too adventurous. It was only after being approached by some Big Folk just outside Gondor some months ago that Podo decided to increase his profit by selling all his tobacco to an anonymous buyer, carrying extra cargo, and not asking questions.

AN old man cocked his ear upon a bridge;
He and his friend, their faces to the South,
Had trod the uneven road. Their boots were soiled,
Their Connemara cloth worn out of shape;
They had kept a steady pace as though their beds,
Despite a dwindling and late risen moon,
Were distant. An old man cocked his ear.

Good People! What has happened to accepting personal responsibility in Middle-Earth?
Surely the good Boffins and Baggins, Bracegirdles and Proudfoots, should not be reduced to the state of "victimhood" because they freely chose to participate in a wagering game under "house rules"?
And in a savage land, where brute force and "might makes right" are the order of the day, is it so wrong the we, of the "weaker sex", should use our minds and skills in order to make our way in a world wHere our rights are few, and the dangers many?
Yay, even as Good Bethberry harvests the fruits of Middle Earth in order to insure her own survival, making always sure that enough is left behind for others to share, (though could it not be said that the bees of the hive might have good cause to object to the taking of their honey?), so too does poor Birdie take only what she needs, leaving behind enough for others to survive, as well as offering a brief respite from the drudgery and toil which is the fate of most of the good citizens of Middle Earth.
And does not Birdie, by applying herself to learning feats of skill and an ancient trade, ensure that she will always live up to the Code of the Skin-Changers, which forbids her from using her natal talents for nefarious purposes?
So do not judge too harshly the actions of this poor skin-changer, 'lest you would all look to your own actions, before you would be assessed in the halls of Mandos. After all, if you prick a skin-changer, does she not bleed? (Well, not always, but most of the time!)
Oh, and Gandalf - I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!

Pio - Thanks for the quote. Boy, that lil' water rat gets around!
Where dips the rocky highland
Of Sleuth Wood in the lake,
There lies a leafy island
Where flapping herons wake
The drowsy water rats;
There we've hid our faery vats,
Full of berrys
And of reddest stolen cherries...

All,
I am off again, to the skies this time rather than the highway and most likely won't have any computer access until I return on the 22nd. In my absence, Gandalf the Grey will carry my character, as he knows 'her' best.
I trust there will be adventures left for me when I return. smilies/smile.gif

All,
My apologies for being absent for such a long time, but this summer has been extremely frantic and stressful. It's good to see the RP still going and I am greatly intruiged at the new drama that has arisen with Birdie.

Well, I'm back. (with apologies to Sam, as that is more fitting than can be imagined)
Thank you, Gandalf, for the wonderful surprise and great honour to my character. I had never thought of Bethberry as a kind of ranger character, but in your astute perception, I can now see many other possibilities for her. *bows with great friendship and gratitude* It is becoming quite intriguing also with Podo and Esmerelda and Merry. Our plot thickens, I guess we could say, although that reeks of cliche.
It is good to see the RP continuing despite the summer demands and responsibilities. *waves to Orofacion* I still have many time-consuming priorities and family responsibilities to complete before I can jump back into the full swing of things, but I do hope to get in at least one post today or tomorrow, keeping in mind the new "four line" requirement (or is it "four sentence"?) -- not that "On Patrol" could ever be criticized as not being a substantial RP! *pats without any modesty or humility all the Patrollers on the back*
*waves hello also to piosennial and Birdland*

Welcome back! * returns your bow of friendship * smilies/smile.gif I look forward to seeing what direction you'll take based on your well-earned rank of Honorary Ranger. As for Podo, Esmerelda, Merry, and Hardwin for that matter, I'm envisioning their subplot more as a way of introducing Podo and Esmerelda than anything else, the better for these two characters to possibly appear in a future RPG. But who knows what will happen?

Aauugghh, this figures. Just when someone returns to the RPG, someone else leaves! smilies/frown.gif Enjoy your time away and I'll look forward to seeing you back on Tuesday! smilies/smile.gif Meanwhile, your presence will be missed. Farewell for now, my friend. * bows with all best wishes to you *

Thanks, Birdie, for making that change. I hope that by next week, when my children are back at school, that I will have more consistent and regular access to the Net and to the RP.
Podo, Esmerelda, and Merry will make an appearance later today.
Speaking of RPs, your new one looks mighty fine. smilies/smile.gif

Gandalf, Bethberry, Bird, Pio and all,
You folk have a great RPG going on here. I have been tempted to join more than once, and I did skim over the whole thread. But, it would be awfully hard to pick up at this point when so much has happened. I'm not even sure who all the characters are!
If you ever conclude this and start a new one, let me know as I'd enjoy playing along.
(If wordiness is a requirement, I definitely qualify. Just ask Bird and Pio! (Small hobbit blows out many puffs of good hot air!)
Meanwhile, have a good trip!

Gandalf - the elves were correct. Peri and Midnight are also gone from the stable. In a previous post(page 9), she has gotten up very early to catch a certain morning light. After mucking out Peri's stall and feeding both of them, she and they are going down to the river - Vorondil has joined them.

I don't wish to be rude, VanimaEdhel, but your last post here in the Discussion thread has got me wondering. Do you have any idea when you might just feel like interacting with the rest of us on the RPG rather than only with your own characters?

All,
I must assuredly apologize for not contributing or being involved whatsoever in the past few weeks. My real world engagements simply left me far too drained to post anything resembling a substantial post in the RP. I barely had enough energy to keep an RP of my own going. Alas, two jobs and a slow connection tend to keep me from surfing for over half on hour at the most.
But Gandalf you appear to have read my mind, as we have each other many times before, or Arcon's purpose in the RP. I did not intend him to stay a part of the storyline past the meeting with the Rangers, and I thank you for handling the character appropriately. I must again apologize for simply "dropping" him in everyone's lap.
A note to myself, avoid joining new RPs during the summer, no good can come of this! Leave such endeavors for the fall. smilies/wink.gif
I wish you all the best and it was my esteemed pleasure to post with each and every one of you. Gandalf and Bethberry, I enjoyed RPing with you once more, it is of course entirely my pleasure I assure you.
Look out for Arcon this fall (or the "other guy" perhaps smilies/wink.gif ), I am considering a new RP storyline.
My best wishes and regards,
Oro

Let me explain where I am going with this: I'm trying to get them in a position where they are trying to sneak back in, then stumble upon the others. I couldn't think of any other interesting way to have them meet back up with you after so much happened while I was away for a month. My next post will be that they go back that night, trying to sneak in, then stumble across the others.
Trust me: I have the whole thing written out over here (literally...so much paper...): it makes sense eventually.

Well Gandalf, shall we have one more round, and wrap this up? As for winning or losing: I leave it to the dice. (Though if Birdie loses, she might never get that cushy job in Rivendell that she was daydreaming about. smilies/biggrin.gif )

Orofacion of the Vanyar:
Most understandable about your real-world commitments, my friend. * bows * It's been an honour and a pleasure having Arcon join us along the road while we've been On Patrol. May our paths cross again, in which case I'll look forward to sharing new adventures. smilies/smile.gif
Birdland:
Sounds good to me ... I'll bring my dice along on my travels this Labor Day Weekend. smilies/smile.gif Though actually, I'd thought it more likely for Birdie to end up in Rivendell if she loses. For losing the riddle-game would wind her up in Gandalf's employ, and then all she'd have to do is somehow survive Castle Maladil and hopefully pick up a fast horse along the way, to keep up with Midnight while making all haste to acquire a replacement letter from Elrond to Galadriel.
(We're getting slightly ahead of ourselves, for Castle Maladil shall be its own RPG, and beyond Castle Maladil, should be another separate RPG.)

Last Call for Posts to the On Patrol RPG!
Within the next few days, I intend to write the final post to On Patrol.
The reason why I envision that the action of On Patrol should end at the Trade Inn of Sarn Ford, is so that the upcoming Castle Maladil RPG can make a clean start from this same Inn. This segway will conveniently allow new people the opportunity to join the company before the company becomes embroiled in whatever dangers or challenges lie ahead.
Thanks and kudos to all my fellow adventurers who have made sharing the road such a wonderful treat. I look forward to our many successful future journeys together. smilies/smile.gif

Hail Mithadan:
You read correctly. Though I plan to take a break from being RPG threadmaster for a bit, an upcoming RPG tentatively called Castle Maladil is in the works. smilies/smile.gif
Now that I have made a final post today to On Patrol, I wonder if you could please close the RPG thread and archive it?
Thank you for your kind support. * bows *
