Aylwen Dreamsong invites you to...Search for the Book. Please do not post here until Aylwen has.

Title: Search for the Book

Basic Storyline: A storyteller in the market place of Dale told a tale once of a book that lay in a lone mountain not far from the Iron Mountain. The storyteller said the book contained the histories of a lost race, and spells and medicines they used. An interested Daleswoman in her nearby shop overhears, and decides to find the book, but there is no telling what she and a few companions may encounter, both in the mountain and in the wild.

Purpose of the Story is to: Find the mountain and successfully get the book
and return home.

The story ends when: Players find the book and return home.

Starting location: Dale

Destination: Hopefully they make it to the mountain, and in the end, back to Dale.

Timeframes:
This story takes place in the Middle-years of the Third Age, maybe 100 years before 770 when Smaug invades Erebor and Dale is destroyed.
The plot takes no more than a month and a half, two months at most. The game requires a commitment of a couple of months, not too long, hopefully.

Characters:
Main character types are: Humans of Dale, adventuring types.
Secondary characters may be: Bored Elves of Mirkwood looking for a good adventure.
People who don't belong: Hobbits, Dwarves.

My Character:

I plan on only playing one character, though if necessary I will play dual roles.

Name: Jadae Starfire
Race: Female human of Dale
Age: Eighteen

History: Jadae grew up the daughter of a metal crafter and a trader. She spent many a day sitting on the floor of her da's shop while he forged the metal. Such comfort Jadae found in the fire and the smell of the metals.

Jadae never agreed or got along with her parents, so when she was sixteen she left home. Knowing her love of welding and crafting, she worked many cheap jobs until she saved enough money to buy her own shop. There she worked making daggers, swords, and armor for anyone who had the money.

Personality: Jadae had always been a troublemaker and risk-taker. Still she puts her best foot forward while the other one stands still. Jadae is very impatient. She always looked for a new adventure and a new trail or path to keep her busy and occupied. Jadae often doesn't agree with people, but always has an unchanging opinion on everything. She likes to break the rules and rarely listens unless the topic is of interest to her.

Appearance: Dark, dark brown curly hair falls to Jadae's shoulder blades, and is often tied back while she works. Jadae has cool grey eyes. She wears comfortable breeches and tunics that she doesn't have to worry about dirtying while she works. Jadae had always been tanner than most, coming from her mother’s side. Short, about five feet tall, and slight but strong are words that describe Jadae.

Weapons/Gear: Jadae is not exactly skilled in weaponry or fighting, but any blade that is made by her and used by her finds it's mark, be it the right mark or no. Jadae's horse, Ronan, is always loyal to her. Jadae's most trusted weapon is her wit.

Hello!

Right then. Thanks Susan! Okay, if you want to join this RPG, please post your character's bio here. Please, no Dwarves or Hobbits. Men (women!) and maybe one elf. Anything else? Oh yes, and if it helps, the Book is said to hold cures/recipes for some diseases and ailments, and may be useful to merchants or loremasters. I was hoping to keep the characters varied. smilies/biggrin.gif

I don't think there's anything else. smilies/smile.gif

Hello Aylwen,

An imaginative, well-plotted story idea and an interesting character. I look forward to reading your game and cheering Jadae on. smilies/biggrin.gif

It's great to see your game here, too, "Frain"!

Hello there, would it be okay if I posted my character, you can refuse or accept it then! Right-oh here goes...

Name: Mattius Strife
Race: Man (just) of the Dale
Age: 18 years and 1 month smilies/smile.gif

History: Mattius grew up in his parents tavern, 'The Rusty Hilt'. Although he enjoyed his childhood helping out his folks and meeting new people almost daily he soon found his heart lay in 'The Guard'. At the age of 16 he left home to become a trainee soilder and two years later he became a full member of The Guard, thinking that it would be full of adventure.

Unfortunatly he was mistaken and soon tired of the job wishing to have more fun.

Personality: Mattius has always got along well with people, this skill comming from meeting so many citizens in his parents pub. As mentioned above however, he is activly looking for excitment as his job in The Guard is no more than a policing role.

Appearance: Six foot tall, spikey blonde hair and blue eyes. Usually found wearing the uniform of The Guard, strong silver breastplate over a mail chain tunic and armour over his legs. And a top his head a round helmet with a nose piece falling down his face. In cold weather this is all shrouded by his dark green cloak.

Weapons/Gear: Mattius carries a short sword issued to him and also a gift from his father, two bronze tomohalk axes, crafted by the dwarves of the lonely mountain and bought by Mattius' father as a showpiece for 'The Rusty Hilt'.

Okay there you go!

Bethberry, Thank you for the warm welcome, 'Frain' is always happy to see an old friend. smilies/biggrin.gif Maybe I should go to the White Horse and invite some adventurers along?

Mattius, Mattuis is accepted, and is allowed to follow Jadae in her search for the book.

Hopefully someone else will see this and join too. Is it just me or does January always seem really busy? Maybe it's just midterms.

Who are you calling old? smilies/wink.gif

That is a great idea. Come to The White Horse as Aylwen, Frain, or Jadae, post for a little while, and see what other characters are there, or if any gamers would be interested.

Ride to the Dark Side will be finishing this weekend, and so there should be several gamers who will have idle keyboards.... smilies/smile.gif

Yes. I think Frain would love to take a ride through Rohan, and visit Bethberry in the White Horse Inn smilies/smile.gif. Maybe tonight or tomorrow smilies/biggrin.gif .

Please, no Dwarves or Hobbits.
I was hoping to keep the characters varied.
...hang on! Something doesn't quite add up...

Garn! I was so excited when I read the first post, but you Dale people think you're so much better than we Dwarves! How about just one? I already have a Dwarf Loremaster character who would be ideal on this quest, and would provide some variety and spice. In the pre-Smaug years I imagine there were quite a few Dwarves skulking around Dale. Here's a little sample:
After the second tale had finished, and it is apparent that the will to tell his tales was not dimmed, a man asked of the longbeard:
"Sir, what is your name? From whence came you?"
"MY NAME?! MY NAME??!!" he roared, his eyes blazing, and the beer swilling from his mug, as he stomped over to the man and slammed his tankard down on the wooden table. His eyes wide and wild, he stared at the man who was now quivering in his seat.
"I have forgotten." he said, took up his drink and walked across the room again. It may be that through the course of his long life, all the Dwarf came to remember were the tales that he told. For they were his life as well as his craft, and he had desire to know nothing else. That is not to say that he brooded endlessly on his lore and his histories. But when not at task, he simply thought of nothing else. He could roast a boar, pour a beer, change his clothes, and do by instinct all things necessary to sustain him through life. But the only reason he lived, now that he had been consumed by them, was to tell his stories.

This quest would be earlier on in his life, though, before he has gone completely nutty. Let me know if I should post a Bio for him or not. Cheers.

...hang on! Something doesn't quite add up...

When I said that, I meant motive/history wise, not species/race wise. You caught me there, for a second.

I don't know. So is the dwarf a loremaster? I'm not sure we would need one, unless he knew of the book. If he was a linguist-type character (I wish I could think of a better word!) we may have more need of someone like that. When you can, post a proper bio for your dwarf. smilies/biggrin.gif I'll think of it. Though I thought people would complain about not being able to be elves. I like dwarves though, don't get me wrong. smilies/biggrin.gif

What's the book called?

As for the extent of his resume, my Dwarf could perhaps just be an accidental character, that is either picked up along the way or, hearing about the quest, follows along behind until he is accosted by the group and told to either join them or get lost.

Rosfin of Erebor

Dwarf of the Lonely Mountain, bard and loremaster to King... whoever is King Under the Mountain at the time of this adventure.

Aged 114, over the hill but not too far down the tricky slope on the other side. His home is Erebor, but he travels frequently around the lands. Has even been through The Shire to the Blue Mountains on several occasions. As a bard and loremaster the Dwarf has a certain amount of respect accorded to him, but also a certain amount of disdain. He has not the time nor the inclination for metalwork or battle, the two pillars of Dwarven life.

Fluent in Sindarin, Khuzdul and Westron, with a fair knowledge of Quenya, and even knows a few garbled phrases of Orc language, mainly the few words that are common throughout all Orc kinds. Rosfin has a large repertoire of tales and ballads, and also plays a large version of a wooden recorder (like a cross between an oboe and a flute). As a consequence of remembering such things, he occasionally forgets the most basic of knowledge, such as how old he is or how well done he likes his roast boar.

Catching wind of the search for the Book, Rosfin decides to tag along out of professional interest. Somewhat of a recluse among the Dwarves he cannot afford to dislike the other races as many Dwarves do. Aside from his recorder, his hooded cloak and his pipe, Rosfin carries a jewelled mattock with a diamond-tipped blade, given to him by the King of the Iron Hills. He refers to his weapon The Pride of the Fleet. The only other such item he carries is a small knife, made in Erebor, whose hilt is in the shape of a dragon with its wings folded down towards the blade.

doug*platypus , I like Rosfin! He sounds very interesting and unlike many other dwarves. I have also read some of your posts in other RPGs, such as Kidnapped! and The Hobbits Gift. You and Rosfin are welcome to join Jadae and Mattius in their search for the book. That is, if we get enough people to join. smilies/wink.gif

To tell you the truth, I hadn't thought about what the race would call their book, yet I'll think of that name once my brain has recovered from midterms next and this week smilies/wink.gif . To the Humans (and Dwarf!) I thought to call it 'Wanaparma', meaning 'Lost Writings,' though it is not very original, and if I had time I was hoping to think of something more exotic and interesting.

Sorry this took so long, I was busy. But here's the profile that I worked up...

Name: Arethin
Age: 24
Race: Man of Dale

History: Arethin was the son of a trader and an artist, with one younger brother. His family was fairly well-off until his father's death in a fire when he was fourteen years old. He began working as a laborer to help support his family, in supplement to his mother's income selling her paintings. He was always a bright young man, but could not finish his education after his father's death.

His mother fell ill when he was twenty, and since then he has searched for a cure for her. His brother, seven years younger than he, is ready to take up the burden of helping to support the family.

Personality: Arethin is a gentle, easy-going man. He's very strong, and knows his strength, and is all the more gentle for it. Arethin is fiercely loyal to those he is close to, and though it is difficult to anger him, if his friends or family are threatened he is a force to be reckoned with. He's not argumentative, and generally bends to the will of those in charge, but occasionally he will pop out of his shell and debate heatedly over decisions.

Appearance: Arethin is a little over six feet tall with mid-neck length sun-bleached hair and brown eyes. He is strongly built from his work. He wears a khaki shirt and dark breeches. Despite his build, most peoples' first impressions of Arethin are of a shy, introverted, but kind young man.

Weapons: Arethin, being the self-appointed protector of his family, is quite skilled with a sword, and in hand-to-hand combat. He can use a bow if necessary, but prefers no weapon at all; his size is an advantage over most enemies.

I'm trying out something totally out of the ordinary for myself- this will be fun it I get accepted!

Name: Angalos Stormaxe
Race: Man of Dale
Age: 27
Occupation: Trader with the wood-elves
Appearance: Dark brown hair down past his shoulders that he wears in a braid during the day; tanned and toned from working constantly in the sun, also quite well-featured. He wears a light shirt and trousers made from elven cloth for working hot days.
History: Growing up, Angalos' father and mother kept a general store, so they would often let him wander away and keep himself entertained on his own while they worked. Angalos would almost always go to the docks where the traders would unload barrels upon barrels of wine that came down the river from Mirkwood. He was fascinated with elves from the first, and whenever they came he would observe them with wonder. Naturally, Angalos opted to go into the trading business, where now he deals with elves quite often.
Weapons/gear: Throughout his life, Angalos' fascination with trading has not prevented him from learning to weild a weapon. Whenever he goes abroad, he carries his namesake with him- stormaxe, a silver, dwarf-style axe that is half his height and has a black handle.
Reason for going: He is looking for a little more adventure, but mostly it is because Angalos wants to see new lands and broaden his horizons, and perhaps be part of something great.

Anyways, we have only five people:

Me-Jadae
Mattius-Mattius
doug*platypus-Rosfin
Orual-Arethin
Ithaeliel-Angalos

Maybe some of the other RPG's will end today or in the next two days, and we can open the actual Rpg this week. If we don't get too many more characters, I'll probably decide to be another character.

Yeah, ditto, but no hurry. Whenever you guys are set. I'd also like to say that I'm glad there are no bad guy PCs. In the case of this RPG it seems silly to have the story seen from the bad guys' perspective as well; this seems more like an FOTR mission... quest... thing. And I don't think that only having five PCs is necessarily a bad thing, either (although I'm sure one or two more wouldn't hurt). Check out The Blue Mountains RPG.

Greetings,

I humbly post my request to join you on your quest.

Here's my character:

Name:Anuion
age:1938
Description: Anuion wear's green clothing and has light brown hair. He is 1.87 meters high(sorry I don't use foot measures and don't know them either) and carries a light elven sword a bow and a long knife. (just think of a crossing between Legolas and Aragorn only not so perfect as both.
Biography: Anuion is a Sindar elf and was born (and still lived) in Mirkwood where he was a servant of king Thrandhuil. When reaching the age of 500 he had enough of a life of serving and began to master the art's of fighting and weaponry. When he reached the respectable age of 1000 he went out of Mirkwood and became a ranger. He has seen many places from the shire till ithilien.

Yeah well he's a ranger. What is he doing in Dale?
Good point. Well Angalos Stormaxe is a trader with the forrest elves. As a ranger he ofcautse needs money so he could have been going with him for some extra cash. Or he could just be returning from a visit to his father in Mirkwood wich he does quite often. (Not just on Holyday's smilies/wink.gif )

Okay that's clear, why would he come with us?
Because he is always eager to help and the mountains arren't pretty at night if you know what I mean. Strange folk runnin around at night. Besides, it is always good to have a battle brused elve along.

Well here it is. Hope you like him.

If you will be needing any referances just look at the "Wolf Run RPG" and the "Shadow of Umbria RPG"

This WILL be my firsth RPG in Rohan (if I am accepted that is) so I will work my but of to see that I get it right.

Greetings,

Anuion

Wow! You're one step ahead of me, *Anuion*. I suppose you're used to the answers the game owners ask...

Well, I did say I'd let an elf go along, and you provided a reason as well. Lets see how the Elf and Dwarf get along on the journey smilies/smile.gif.

To Everyone:

My apologies for leaving this thread alone for a few days. I was hoping a few more people would join, but it seems 'Ride to the Dark Side' is taking longer than we thought. Plus, I have been a bit busy with midterms (Especially Spanish..) but after this Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday it shouldn't take up my time anymore.

So, I suppose we have to start the Rpg sooner or later. If miss Susan Delgado has time, we could start it tomorrow (Sunday) or the day after.

Thanks for the patience,
Aylwen

Helka- Master Rosfin of Erebor is our only dwarf. We haven't met up with him yet, but even so, he is a:

Dwarf of the Lonely Mountain, bard and loremaster to King

smilies/biggrin.gif

Maybe this will help a bit:

Mattius-Jack Strife, a Guard.
doug*platypus-Rosfin of Erebor, a loremaster and bard. ((Where are you, doug?))
Orual-Arethin, a worker/laborer.
Ithaeliel-Angalos Stormaxe, a trader with the Elves of Mirkwood.
Helka-Anuion, a ranger (right? Or did I get mixed up?)
Aylwen-Jadae, a smith.

So, we have not met Master Rosfin yet, but we should soon. Keep in mind that Jadae, Jack, Arethin, Angalos, and Anuion have never met before the game started, save maybe they have seen each other once or twice (It's a small Middle-Earth after all!). Where are you, doug?

I'm here! Just waiting for a while to introduce dwarf-boy. So that there's a little departure from the norm of first posts, I thought I'd let the quest develop a tiny bit and ambush you all on the way out of town, or on the way out of The Rusty Hilt or something.

My character saw a notice in The White Horse in Rohan notifying about the quest. This might not be very realistic, though, so if there is no note in an Inn, he's probably just been lurking about behind the forge. Be patient, and don't wait. Expect me when you see me.

I assure you that I probably WILL scare your elf when I appear. Most of the fair folk seem to become a little nervous, and perhaps self-conscious, when around Durin's people. Some of them even exhibit a curious form of beard envy, probably as a result of the feminine nature of all but a few examples of elven males.

Is there an existing description of the Rusty Hilt? If so, can someone please post it? Cheers.

It also seems that our new friend Angalos has taken a wrong turn!

Okay, I have a couple of questions: a trivial question and a more serious one.

The trivial question is this: Aylwen, how do you pronounce Jadae? Is it -day, or -die? I'm inclined to say -day, but I know that in Elvish the -ae is pronounced like -ie. Then again, Jadae isn't an Elf. This isn't important, but it's bugging me... smilies/rolleyes.gif

Okay, serious question. What are the limits of "bunnying" or "godding" or whatever, on this RPG? On my other major RPG, Nurumaiel's "A Hobbit's Gift," the rules are basically don't have any drawn-out dialogues and try not to make other characters talk at all. Just so I don't break any rules, what are the guidelines for this game?

Namarie and many thanks,

Orual-To be honest, I can't remember where I saw the name, but I have been pronouncing it Ja-day. I like names that start with J. smilies/biggrin.gif

When you graduate to Rohan, you can experience more independence, exercise your creativity more

I'm not sure if this refers much to what we're talking about, but I'm not going to say that you can't let Jadae or Jack talk during one of your posts. As long as you don't take them out of their character or move them around too much. If that makes no sense, sorry smilies/frown.gif smilies/redface.gif smilies/rolleyes.gif . What I mean is, don't go too far with another character, but you can post dialogue between your character and another, if you take my meaning.

I'm sure if you do something that I (or the character you use's owner..person.... smilies/rolleyes.gif ) object to, you can always edit.

Hope that helps... smilies/frown.gif

After talking with Mattius, we agreed that I could post this description of the Inn that I'd come up with.

A smallish Inn, cozy, old-looking and careworn from lots of visitors. Upon entering the inn the bar would be to one's right, and the kitchen out of sight behind it. On the left would be tables and benches, and a fireplace on the far left wall with an armless chair in front of it for passing storytellers or musicians (armless to make it easier to hold an instrument while sitting). The walls are sparsely decorated with paintings of Dale by local artists.

So there you have it! A description of the Rusty Hilt.

Dear God,

After reading of this latest development on the discussion thread, I did think it was a bit... presumptious. I knew that someone would do it. I personally couldn't see what was wrong with one of the party having a slightly different introduction, and was going to follow along behind for a little while first.

But after reading the post on the RPG thread, I changed my mind a little. While not in the exact words I would have used for him, that was pretty much something that the dwarf would do - he's a little bit eccentric. I had to laugh when he burst out of the shadows and stormed over to the group, especially since he's only a little over half their height! I think we'll keep going from there. At any rate, that was a great post Ithaeliel!

Okay, so almost everyone edited their posts for Angalos being hasty and Rosfin not believing? I believe Helka may still have to edit for our friend Ith, but he can always do that when he has time...

Now, I must ask: Does anyone else feel the need to play their Edit Card before we 'move on' so to speak?

I know that some, like Rosfin, would prefer to leave in the morning, or at least later than the evening. Yet Jack seems ready to leave.

Let's leave in the morning. It would prvide a little time for every character to wrap things up in Dale. Orual could send Arethin on a quick trip home to talk to his brother and mother. We can get enough supplies for the six of them.

Maybe Jack can get his new buddies a discount smilies/wink.gif on the rooms, if they are so needed?

Moving On!

Okay! We're all leaving Dale! It has been exactly a month (I think!) since Susan started the Game Thead. This game was only supposed to last from 2 1/2 to three months. We have barely left Dale (if you could call it 'leaving'). As I said earlier, it will not take long for us to get to the Mountain. And it won't be hard to find, either. Just north of the Iron Hills. Though we may run into some sort of evil group (I haven't quite decided yet) to give us a little taste of battle. Then we'll get to the Mountain. As I said in the White Horse:

the most exciting part of the Rpg will come when the travelers have to get through the mountain (pyramid!) and avoid all the booby traps and tricks in the place and get the book (and get the heck outta there!).

Yeah. Thus, it won't be as easy as you may have thought to get into and through and out of the mountain.

If none of you want to post about us really leaving Dale, I will sometime soon. Though I'd really prefer it if one of you did, so that I'd be giving you all more of a chance to 'take the itiative' so to speak. Did that make sense? I hope so.

Just kidding. The mine.. I mean moutain will contain boobytraps. What kind of traps will that be? Are they like pits with walls closing in and chrushing and giant rolling boulders kinda traps or more like wild animals kinda traps?

Hm. I haven't read page 3 of the discussion thread in a while. Looks like it's probably best not to. Funny, despite the attention on the discussion thread, I've only received one PM. PMs are the way to get peoples' attention. Cheers, Aylwen.

Apologies for my unexplained absence. University, moving house, and family have been insurmountable lately, and what little spare time I do end up with I pretty much use for sleeping and eating. When you're older, Helkahothion, perhaps you'll understand.

This weekend I should be able to find enough time to post. Feel free to "god" WITHIN REASON for the rest of the RPG. If you become immensely frustrated, I will allow the Gameowner to drop Rosfin off at the Iron Hills or wherever, but do not kill him off.

Since doug is occupied in RL (I think we all understand, doug...I was AWOL for a little while there in February), should we go back and act like Arethin never asked for a tale? Because I think that godding a whole story from a character might be going a bit far, and it wouldn't be that difficult just to delete that and keep on, Rosfin just being Dwarvishly quiet.

Sí, Orual. Makes sense. We (Or at least everyone but Helka! smilies/smile.gif) understand.

So, Helka, if you could, please delete or edit your post to a SAVE. I think I'll just edit for a song from Jadae.

The song in my post was taken and horrible disfigured a tiny bit by me, and was written by an unknown author/poet (I'm pretty sure) who lived in Maine in the early 1900's. I saw it in my midterm test booklet and had to write it down. I was waiting for a chance to use it.

Hola, everyone.

Everything is going great, and (hopefully) our group will be at the Mountain by this weekend (Real Time), Friday.

Our group will have a bit of trouble getting into the Mountain, and I will be PMing Helka and doug*platypus this afternoon.

And, as Sadbh's sig states so well: 'Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow (Today) we take the Standerdized Tests.' At least we get out 3 hours early, eh?

So...keep it up and hopefully our travelers will safely get to the Mountain by Friday (or Sunday, at the latest). And, Helka and doug (if you read this), you guys will be getting a PM about your character and/or getting into the cave.

Stupid Cable company! *Bites lower lip to keep from screaming inappropriate words*

Anyway...*Breathes*, LoL. No worries, Ith. We've got plenty (a month and a half, I think) of time to develop our characters a little more.

I'm still waiting on a response to a PM I sent doug*platypus, but I think if he doesn't show by Monday or reply by then I'll have to figure something out. Of course *Glares at Helka* there'll be no hard feelings if we have to find away to slip Rosfin out of the game, for everyone has RL issues.

Okay, so by Sunday we'll be figuring how to get into the Mountain. If you want to post (Ith smilies/smile.gif) before then, go ahead and bring us to the Mount if you feel like it. They can take a nap or something smilies/biggrin.gif. But please, please, please don't post about them getting into the cave. Thank you!

EDIT ON MARCH 17: With great regret, I had to pull Rosfin from the game. No hard feelings, doug*platypus, if you're reading. I understand how hectic/busy RL can get. If you cannot participate in the game once or twice a week though, I'm not sure it will be an easy task with Rosfin. Of course, we enjoyed having him along, and I'm sorry we had to make Rosfin leave. If any details of his departure are inadiquete, please feel free to tell me!

To Everyones:

Sorry about my not being on, The server went down here and we've just gotten it back. I am still defintly in for the cameo.

For the record, I posted on Friday

Just in the nic of time! smilies/wink.gif

Here bes my bio

Name- Crystwen
Age-3921
Sex-female
Eyes-drk blue
Hair-Light brown w/ blonde streaks
Physical App- Athletic build, light skin color, wears drk blue longsleeved shirt, black pants and boots, over the top of the long sleeved shirt, she wears a mithril chest-plate and mithril gauntlets that come up to her elbow, often wears a drk blue hooded cloak as well.
Weapons-carries a leather quiver of metal tipped arrows and a short bow. She perfers to use her sword. The sword hangs off a belt in a very detailed scabbard
History- Crystwen was born at the end of the first age. She and her mother and father lived together on the mountain. Crystwen's father was a captain of the elite soldiers on the mountain. When Crystwen was older, she wished to join them. At first, her father did not think that she would be able to handle the pressures of the postion, but at letting her try, Crystwen proved herself to be a capable and ruthless soldier.
Demeanor-Very stoic, trys to think things out first before acting, suspicious of strangers to the mountain. When around her own people however, Crystwen is more lighthearted and aimable.

Once again, sorry I haven't been on, I would post more, but know I have to go play catch up on the RPG! See ya'll in there. smilies/evil.gif

Where is everyone? We've got to finish this game up soon, in say, three or four weeks (or maybe that's too long?). Since I have little time nowadays I think I'll just write where you all go and what you all see in this post, is that all right?

Ithaeliel/Ransom~What can I say? It's a kitchen...kind of...that Angalos finds next, and you can describe it any way you wish, and Ransom will follow you in there, being the suspicious guy he is smilies/wink.gif.

Anuion/Jack/Crystwen~Hmm, okay. Helka wanted a battle scene, he's getting one. Hopefully, you two guys are smart enough to find the ladder and figure it's the way out. If you do pass this tremendous mental obstacle of finding the rope *sarcasm*, you enter the Weapons Storage room, where Crystwen is waiting (dun dun dun). Whether a suspicious Crystwen or one of the warriors starts a little fight, I don't think it matters. Just...don't kill each other...please.

Ari/Jadae~Yippee for Jadae, the first stop after the pairs' duct crawling, is the SMITHY! Woot! Anyhoo, seems a regular smithy, so if you have time Orual, you can bring the two from the beginning of the ducts and into the first few minutes in the smithy, but then I'll take it from there smilies/evil.gif.

Any questions? After this, I think I'll have one or two traps left, then we'll begin winding the game down. smilies/frown.gif

Fine, I guess it's ok that you told her. But could you edit something? Or add??

"Surely the immortals in here have been able to learn the curings by heart considering that you can't get a lot of different deceases inside a cave. You have had a lot of time to learn a book that would have taken a lot of elves only a few years to master completely."

Technically, diseases can spread quickly throughout an enclosed space. It's like how people say, "there's a bug going around." Since the Elves of the caves (the Ti'Lavan, by the way) are in such close quarters, any communicable diseases can be easily spread throughout the cave. I think...but I'm no doctor. Also, the book isn't just a medical-type book, it also holds the customs and the histories of the Ti'Lavan. So it's not just that they can give away the book because they have memorized the contents of the medical items within it, but they also have to consider that the history of their kind are stored in the book.

So, can you edit a little bit, Helka?

Then, the group will go find Angalos, since after waiting for a while in the common room they will decide to go to his rescue smilies/wink.gif. We'll find Angalos, probably run into Ransom's character Llu, and then I'll post with us actually getting to the book (finally!). Once we get there though doesn't mean it's over smilies/evil.gif. What happens after that I'll get to later. smilies/smile.gif

Yay! Ith is back after her long absence! SHE'S ALIVE! smilies/biggrin.gif

Ith, since Angalos failed to show up in the Common Room (which was mentioned in Mattius' last post but I'm sure will be edited once he gets some sleepy time!), his buddies are going to go look for him. What I had planned for Angalos was for him to get locked in one of the kitchen pantries by Ransom's Lluniach (that's still his name, right, Ransom? You haven't posted a bio so I'm getting that from memory smilies/smile.gif). But you really have to watch out for spiders... smilies/evil.gif.

So, next person to post for Ari, Jack, Anuion, and Jadae (and I'm hoping that person is Helka, since he's only on once or twice a week now) will follow the path Angalos took originally...which was into the library. Let us take a look at the library, then I'll see what goes on next.

Then we'll see to getting into the chamber with the Wanaparma. smilies/biggrin.gif What do ya'll think?

Ith will hopefully posts when she is done with a choir competition, but until then, we really need to get moving. We need to:

1) Get into the kitchen
2) Save poor Angalos & meet Lluniach
3) Go back to the common room

After that, I need to talk to Orual about after that. It involves her character. So can someone post to bring us into the Kitchen? As long as anyone is alive out there?

Awww Helka!

Please, please do not split up the group. Why would they agree to let the two of you go when they're out to find the book as well?

Also, does Anuion have some sort of magic power that lets him see into other people's thoughts or something? As the reader/writer, you might read things that are secrets, or something else that people don't actually know about (ie, other character's thoughts/feelings). Just remember that your character does not know everything that you know about from reading. Unless Anuion is told something, he doesn't know it. Don't make unrealistic leaps like that.

Please edit, Helka man. Watch your dern spelling! smilies/tongue.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Also, once we're all out of the kitchen and are a whole group again, DayVampyre, can you bring us back to the common room (but don't do anything once we get there).

I think she was supposed to be back from some sort of choir thing today, but I don't know what is going on with her anymore. If you could post by Wed. Ransom, it would be great. It would also help if you started getting things in the kitchen wrapped up, since we're practically running overtime on this game.

The reason I say it is my last post is because, for those who didn't already know, I will be taking a leave of absence for a month or so and will not be able to post again here.

--Ith, Kidnapped! Discussion

So, Ith apparantly is taking a month-long hiatus and won't be returning in time to finish the RPG (I think...), so we will just have to carry Angalos around and just assumed she doesn't want him killed.

So Ransom, until we leave the kitchen, Angalos is yours to command and do what you will with him, within reason of course.

1. Re: overtime. No. It depends upon the circumstances.

2. Do not attempt to read the Moderator's mind.

Can't we just cut him up a little?

Please see the comments concerning "wack and slash" on the RPlague thread from Child of the Seventh Age and Rimbaud. Games in Rohan should provide more thoughtful character and plot development.

On the other hand, the point bears repetition. Here's the comments:

Tolkien's Middle-earth, although a dangerous world, was a place where there was a great deal more going on than folk taking hacks at each other with weapons. I don't think we do enough to explore those other aspects: character development, outwitting your opponent through brains and deception rather than sheer might, exploring historical trends like migrations, etc.
[Child]

The other side of the coin is less well explored; the male characters that ring perhaps more true than our myriad shieldmaidens (and in the hack 'n' slash routine so ably described above by the estimable COT7A, they do) are all flawed, albeit seemingly quite unintentionally. Their comments are frequently misogynist, they have no recourse but to violence, and as for emotional depth, its scarcity in most stories here borders on deliberation.

The avoidance of violence and suffering is a stronger and nobler aim than the indiscriminate use of force. Might does not make right. When you have a conflict between two characters, try and resolve it, work through the issues. Or, leave those issues festering in their minds, while the night turns black around them, which is invariably easier and more enjoyable.
[Rimbaud]

Both of these statements express concepts of writing which can very productively be explored in Rohan.

Well, Mattius' character, as they were leaving the mountain, said the book could help impress and convince the father of a certain Elven Maiden that Jack should be able to see her. Since Anuion is an Elf, perhaps they could travel together to wherever the Elf lives? After all, Ari only needed a cure, Jadae only needed adventure, and I have no idea what is with Angalos, we didn't get much out of him in this game.

Hope that helps.

Aylwen

Oh, and I was thinking sequel too, maybe. Once Rohan busies up again and we can have everyone back, and maybe a few more players (dedicated ones). But we'll see, and I'll put something to that extent in my last post of the game.

Fellow Rohan gamers,

Our gaming comes with a cost; it is time to reflect on this fact and make some changes to how we run our games.

We RPGers are the most voracious consumers of Barrow Downs resources. We use a game thread, a discussion thread, PMs to plan games, and are constant visitors to the site, often returning more than two or three times a day to keep up with developments in the game in order to prepare our own posts.

Why is this a drain on BD resources? Please take some time to read carefully and reflect seriously upon the Barrow Wight's recent posts in the "Announcements >> The Barrow Downs" forum concerning storage space and bandwidth, chat and discussion, and the costs of running the site, and then change your posting habits.

What are the most beneficial changes in our posting habits? For one, we need to stop using the discussion threads for idle banter, for personal comment. We must restrict our posts to discussion of the games only, that is, to issues of plotting, character interaction, clarification, and notification of absences. For most occasions, we don't need to make multiple posts about why we are absent or how we are doing and we don't need to make a string of 'see ya' posts in reply. For personal comments, we can use the chat room or PMs. A discussion thread that is far longer than a game thread is often a signal of a misuse of the discussion thread.

Please take the time to do several things: Delete posts or run of the mill comments in the discussion thread that have no bearing on the game. Refrain from such posts and comments in future discussions of the games. Limit your daily visits to the thread.

If we all help out, we can ensure that our games remain treasures in the Barrow Downs.

Thanks for being responsible gamers and credible members of the Downs!

Bęthberry
