View Full Version : A new story, with the real feel of Middle-Earth.

I was hoping to keep this topic kinda serious. I would like the people that join in to try and write more then one or two lines when posting a reply. That way this thing can become a real middle-earth story rather than some stupid futuristic discussion. All people that want to join in should try and create a character that is fitting the story. Also the character must be of a race existing in middle-earth or a character that is like a middle-earth character. The same feeling if you know what I mean. Thanks and let's enjoy a great tale. Maybe if it turns out a good story I will collect all replies and turn it in to a printed story that others can read as a complete middle-earth story.
Well, enough of conditions and stuff, because we all hate those. I was just hoping to get more out of this freestyle rpg than I have been reading here so far. If you have any questions post a reply or mail me at jimi_rules@hotmail.com. If this freestyle rpg turns out to be not exactly what I know some of us are looking for in an rpg, we could maybe start some other form of rpg by email. Let me know what you think of it. That way I think it will produce a better store and more fun.

I like your idea greatly. I'm not much good at debates on the other forums but love letting my imagination run riot in Middle Earth. I would be happy to join in with this and write in as Tolkien a style as possible too if you like (although that is quite tricky as I am definately not on his intellectual par!) Would there be room for Radgast the Brown or perhaps Wormtongue in your tale? If you tell me to 'get lost' politely I'll take no offence.

There is certainly room for the characters you mentioned and I think we would do a great job together. Any ideas on the location? I was thinking of maybe starting off somewhere nice and quiet. Some beautiful place, but not Rivendell or Lothlorien or something. I think we should pick a location no other person on this forum has thougt of. I'm going to check the lotr maps right away!

What about the forest in the valley near the Blue Mountains. Just far enough away from the Shire. The forest on the map hasn't got a name attached to it, so we can use our imagination big time. Maybe we could speak of some lost little village inside or just outside the forest. Maybe two races living in peace together. Elves en dwarves maybe. But we have to leave some room for lots of different characters too, at least in the beginning of our story. So that others can join in any time.

Name:Faye Took

Personality: Faye is a very nice hobbit and loves to go on adventures. She hangs out mostly with the boys on acount on she loves sword fighting and things that mostly boys would like.
Apperance: Long straight blonde hair, very bright green eyes, the most beautiful hobbit in the Shire (sorry always wanted to be beautiful).

I like this idea. I hope this one develops into a great RPG, because it certainly seems to have potential if the RPers abide by your requirements. I know I shall, if you'll allow me to join.
I'll have to think a bit. I'll post my character profile later.

The forest by the mountains location sounds fine and a great place for imaginings. I am not very good with plot lines because no matter what you do it always leads back to quests (no bad thing) but I will have a think and also look in old books about celtic and saxon mythology to see if that helps. I'll just get Goldberry and Wormtongue ready for whenever you're ready to start. If you've got Ith (above) on board this could turn out well, she's very good.

Aww... *blushes* smilies/smile.gif
I'm using my (modified) Althanas character for this one:
Name: Endereth Naurelyr
Age: 2876
Race: Noldorin Elf (originally a drow, but that's not a ME race)
Rank: Commoner
Appearance: Icy blue eyes, fair of face, long straight black hair, wears heavy dark blue cape and hood and mithril mail under it.
History: She was born and raised in Lothlorien, but has more recently gone a-shouldering with a small group of rangers to the western parts of Middle-earth (Shire, Lake Nenuial, Blue Mountains, etc.). After her fellows were slain while she was out on errand (similar to the situation of Beren and Barahir), she now wanders alone, grieving for them.
Personality: Quiet and placid, yet independent; doesn't like violence but is not craven.
Weapons/gear/abilities: She carries a sword only for when she is in dire need of it, some waybread, rope, and some medicines for minor injuries. She has extensive mental prowess and can sometimes see the future in dreams.
Approved? smilies/smile.gif

You all sound like you are the right people for this kind of thing. I agree with what is said above: That if everyone follows the requirements I've set this could turn out to be a great tale full of adventure. Next I will pick my character. It seemed about time to do that.
Name: Rothallë the Black (Combination of different languages from Middle-Earth, Mostly Quenya in which it means rider or horse-rider (horse=rocco,to ride=rotha), she has many names and even some names that are already forgotten. This is the name most people use for her nowadays.
Race: Sorceress
Age: She's older than anyone really knows, but she doesn't look quite her age.
Personality: She's very brave and wise. She comes from a long line of Wizards and Sorcerers. Her grandparent went by the names of Alestar and Oïre, long forgotten by now.
Then there is a missing link. Nobody knows, even not her, who her parents were. She is determined to find out, because she feels there is something about herself she should know. The name that is mostly used for her is Miurë which means feminine or cat. Through out the story you will find out why.
Weapons: Of course her powers as a sorceress. She bears a staff made out of the wood of fangorn, of course with the permission of fangorn itself. Also she carries a small sword which was given to her by the Elvenking of Mirkwood.
Any other details we will find out later!
Love to everyone. I intend to start off soon, so pick your character and if you have any ideas on location or story plot let me know.

Certainly Iaurlachien.....
Name: Lómion
Race: Mage

Lómion is fairly tall, has dark hair and dark eyes. He often finds himself alone, thinking or letting his imagination get the better of him, he is not however, an unsociable person. Lómion is a talented poet, although very shy with his works.
History: Born within autumn, he feels he belongs in those surroundings however wanders ME to seek adventure and to meet new creatures. His homeland is unknown to most of ME, and his people prefer it this way. He grew up surrounded by magicks, his ability runs in the family.
Not too futuristic I hope.....

I haven't done an RPG before, but I like to write and would like to try this out.
Name: Calentoliel
Age: unknown- probably somewhere in her 20s
Weapon: a sword called Quickening (if anyone can translate quickening into elvish, I'd appreciate it)
Race: unknown- appears to be high elf
Past: unknown- she was found wandering near Rivendell when she was young
Personality: calm, quiet, and sometimes cheerful, but can have a slight temper if annoyed (one reason why her race is questioned)
Appearance: black hair and eyes that are as black as midnight
Unusual Gift: she is the only bard ever known, meaning that she has the ability to sing magical songs. Though this magic is very powerful, she will only use it when she needs to. How and where she got her magical gift is unknown, which is why it is questioned if she is really an elf at all.

You asked me what was going to be the plot of this story. I have given it a bit of a thought but I'd appreciate some help from y'all. We have to be able to tell a story which is complicated and has many different plot lines. On the other hand we have to keep it understandable and clear. If we make it too complicated we're sure to be going nowhere.
I suggest:
*Every character having a tale for itself. For example the character I chose doesn't know who her parents are and is determined to find that out because she feels she doesn't know quite everything there is to know about herself. So try to make your character part of something important. Maybe he or she is highly honourded by it's race or has a very interesting and mysterious history.
*On the other hand we should create a story line that is most important. The main plot line, if you understand what I mean. Suggestions on this are always welcome. Post any ideas, please. To answer your question: THE MAIN PLOT LINE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A QUEST. I think we should try and create a story that is different from any other story on this forum and we should try to let go of tolkien's main plot line. We would just be copying his story and putting in other names otherwise.
If I have any ideas, I'll post them later today.

Hello you lot. I am fasinated by your idea for a good RPG, the others seems very thin and titter out too easily. I would like to add my charchter if I could and then if you don't mind I could add the 1st part of the RPG, if that is okay with you..? Anyways get back to me on that, here is my character-
NAME: Mattius
AGE: 19
RACE: Elf buts acts as a Man (see below)
APPEARNCE: Short spikey blonde hair with icy blue eyes. Six foot tall clad in black and dark green. His long sword is 'Angamarth'- Iron Doom in Elvish (his fathers sword, given to him by the Elves of Lorien). He also carries many knives and a medium length bow. Attached to his belt and hidden under his cloak is his adaopted father's great Black Mace.
BIOGRAPHY: Mattius was born in the woods of Lothlorien ten years before the War of the Ring. On his first birthday his parents (names unknown) travelled to Rivendell bearing important news for Elrond from the Lady of the Wood. The two of them decided to take young Mattius along with them to show him to the Elves of Rivendell and in particular Elrond. Upon passing the Misty Mountains they were attacked by a creature of great stregth and darkness. Mattius' mother was killed and although his father battled gallantly he was also slain by the beast. Baby Mattius, however, fell down the mountainside and against all odds survived to be found by a young married couple travelling from Bree to Minas Tirith. Selsfihly they took Mattius with them and brought him up as their own (although seemingly selfish they could bear no child of their own and they took it as fate that this child had been put in their path). Indeed, it was them that named him Mattius. They both saw he was an elf but decided to raise him as a man of Gondor and reveal to him the truth on his 18th birthday. Unfortuantly his adopted parents did not live to see this as, when Mattius was only ten, Sauron unleashed his armies from Mordor upon Minas Tirith. Only ten was Mattius yet he marched to war with his father and his mother, such was the need at the time. Both of his parents were killed in the war yet some elves saw the Elven child in the battlefield and after the war was over they took Mattius to Lorien to discover from Galadreil that he was an elf and his true parents had been killed nine years ago. Up untill his 18th birthday Mattius was ordered to remain in Lorien, never knowing his true elvish name as he never wanted to know it. The elves taught him all he wished to know and on his 18th birthday the elves gave him leave of Lorien and allowed him to live his life as he would. He decided to find out whom killed his true parents and now searches ME in hope of acting out revenge on behalf of his Elvish parents.

The sun was beginning to sink behind the trees of the un-named forest as Mattius rubbed his chin in thought and worry. The tracks had all but disappeared in the dense woodland and darkness was approaching, fast. Mattius didn’t like tracking the Beast in the darkness, not at all. He loosely felt the hilt of his sword, Angmarth, and took security in it. He noticed something on the floor, something small but helpful to him, a small piece of broken flint. He crouched down and took a closer look at it. I seemed Dwarvish in fashion. ‘Strange…’ he thought to himself but his thoughts were cut off when he heard screams coming from the thicket some five hundred yards away. He sprinted forward, not heeding the cuts he was receiving from the branches either side of him. As he got closer to the sounds he realised that the screams were that of a child and probably a small girl at that. At last he burst out into the opening unsheathing Angmarth and caught the glimpse of the Black Beast sprinting back into the forest away from him. Quick as a flash he began to run after the shadow but he was stopped in his tracks by the whining of someone on the ground. He turned around to see the small figure hunched up against a tree. Caught in two minds he quickly sheathed his sword and bent down to the tree. Now he could see that the little girl that he thought had been attacked was in fact a young female Hobbit!
“Are you okay?” Mattius asked sternly. The young hobbit moaned and mumbled ‘yes’ to him, eventually.
“Stay here, I will be back soon. Don’t move.” With that Mattius leapt into the woods the way the Beast had taken.
After around thirty minutes Mattius returned to the opening to find the hobbit still sat up against the tree. She looked up and her blonde hair trailed down her face. Mattius helped lift her to her feet.
“You’re a tough little hobbit and no doubt. Perchance you would tell me why you are out here in the un-named woods and how it came about that you were attacked by that Thing that I hunt.”

Hmm... sad but true, I can't think of any plot line that is not quest-related. I'll have to think about this some more.
The Orcs-attack-questers plot I think is way overused here, so let's not have that... but I do like the idea of all the characters' internal conflicts coming together in one journey to find out the unknown about themselves... this could go places without really going places, if you know what I mean. And I like Mattuis's beginning. So all wrapped up in one package, here's what I think would work:
All of the characters somehow come together in the area described by Iaurlachien. Finding that some of us have empty holes in our lives (like Faye and Brinn with no past and me wallowing in grief at my companions' demise), we help each other in trying to mend them by searching for clues as to what happened in the past that could affect them this way, and we make this up as we go along instead of having it all planned out (we can discuss it of course). It will be difficult to write this, but I'm sure in the end it'll be worth it. How does that sound?
BTW, Brinn- glad you decided to jump on the bandwagon. Welcome to the wonderful world of RPing.
Brinniel

Why, thank you, Ith! And I'm sure I'll enjoy it too.
I can't think of any plot w/o a quest either. I like Ith's idea of having the plot unplanned, though. Perhaps we could have a several mini quests along with the characters' issues. Unless someone can think of a plot w/o a quest. I'll keep on brainstorming and let you know if I come up with something else.

I came up with this, kinda like an unplanned plot.
It was extremely cold in the forest, being winter. The wind was rushing through the trees. Their leaves seemed to sparkle in the soft morning sunlight. It had stopped raining and everything was quiet and peaceful. Through the un-named forest walked a black thing. One that would have come upon the beast could hardly have told what it was, it being as black as the forest itself. It’s fur was shining like polished silver, water dripping from it. Almost cat-like the animal seemed, by watching the way it moved. No-one was usually out at this hour, and the beast knew it. It was looking for something, but did apparently not quite know what, because it was wandering around in no particular direction. It looked about the trees and turned its head up to the sky, day was coming. The night was fading quickly now. The cat sat down to lick the water from it’s paws. Suddenly, a flash, a black flash it seemed. The sound of hooves on the wet soil ground. Then it was gone. Quickly the cat got up from the ground and disappeared behind a big strong oak tree. When coming back into sight, the beholder would not have known what to do or to thing. First one bare foot stepped onto the wet grass, then another. A hand was trying to find a grip through the branches. Then a black figure climbed out of the bushes behind the oak tree. It was a woman, Rothallë was her name, Muirë she was also called. She swung her black hair behind her delicate shoulders. Drops of dew fell off it sparkling like a thousand stars on a clear night. Clad in black she was, wearing a black cloak around her shoulders pinned with a silver brooch that looked like a leaf. Her eyes shone, bright green with spots of yellow. One could say that the sparkles of the brightest sunlight were in her eyes. Then, another black flash came, but she did not appear to be afraid. She cried out in a language unknown to most of the living creatures of her age and only spoken when being with beasts. Out of the thick forest stepped a horse. It was a fierce and noble steed, it was her horse Winter’s Sorrow. Rothallë leaped upon its strong back and grabbed its long beautiful manes, for the horse had no bridle on. “Quick”, she said to the horse, and away it leaped into the breaking daylight, heading South.

Galadel Vinorel
08-25-2002, 08:05 AM
May I please join? Here's my character. I have been working on her for a long time.~
Name- Galadel Vinorel (my name means- "Light of the Stars"- named this because my eyes seem to shine like stars, especially when lights are around me, "Morning Star"- named this because I was born on Midsummer's Day, when the Sun rose over the horizon, and also for other reasons which few know.)
Race- Noldor Elf
Lineage- Second Daughter of Lord Celeborn and Lady Galdriel of the Golden Wood
Hair Color- Golden
Eye Color- Crystal Blue
Height- 6"8
Other Names- Palintirel- "Far-Seeing Star"- named this because I have had visions since I was five years old, Phaore- "Heart of Gold"- named this when I was young because I was considered to be very sweet.
Other Features, Etc.- I am as wise and almost as beautiful and powerful as my mother, and I am as strong as my father. I fight with the sword and the bow, though I prefer the sword. I was born in the First Age, and I was five (by the age of the Elves) when Morgoth fell. I fought in the Battle of the Last Alliance as the Commander of the Lothlorien Army of Elves. I can speak most every language. I am the the sister-in-law of Lord Elrond, and the aunt of his children, who I taught how to use the bow and the sword. I ride very well.
Personality- Very calm with a firery temper. She is very effected by the changes in the world (especially the sad ones), and, so, she is often very sad. She is young at heart, though, and she looks and sometimes acts only to be about the age 22. She has a merry laugh that is often heard ringing throught Lothlorien. Though she does not liked to be served by Maidens and such very often, she is indeed very noble, though she does not usually act that way.
Usual Outfit- White dress with silver, red, and gold acccents, and a silver, white or gold cloak. Her hair is either in braids, or is down. She, if she wears them, wears silver or gold shoes.
Traveling Outfit- Green pants and shirt with silver accents, and a green cloak made by her mother that blends in with most every scenery. Her long hair is either in braids or half of her hair is pulled back, with the rest freely flowing. With this outfit she wears Elvish boots.
Sword Name- Ruinel (name means "Flame of the Stars".) The blade is clear, and it was a thread of red (which some say is lava from the fires of Mount Doom) running through the center of it. THe handle is silver with red and gold accents
Horse's Name- Celelith (name means "Silver Star") She is white, with a black tail and mane. On her forhead is a silver birthmark in the shape of a star. She is a gift from King Theoden to me, for she is the daughter of Shadowfax. She is very fast, and knows all the lands of Rohan and Lothlorien by heart.

yea she sounds like a cool charachter, have a look at mine (Mattius) a few replies above and u can see that he spent some time in lorien so maybe there could b a link in there somewhere.
ANYWAYS.....i have been thinking for the start, the characters could meet up in a place mentioned somewhere b4, in the woods to the very left of Eriador. they could b there 4 different reasons, Mattius tracking the Black Beast, Faye Tooks simply looking for adventure, Rothallë also searching the evil Beast etc etc. from here they could travel middle earth and aid in each other's problems.
only an idea but tell me what you think

I think we're off to a great story. The two started plot lines should work perfectly together. I'm also very pleased about the fact that there is no one who chose a character that comes in The lord of the Rings trilogy. That will really help to make a good story. I find also very many links or possible links between the characters a very interesting fact. If we'll work on it, it'll be a great story. Then let's start. I'm going to start a new thread. I'll copy Mattias' story part and mine and put them on the new thread. From there on, type away, please. I'll call the new topic The Blue Mountains. Ok? We'll keep this thread to discuss what is happening in the story, so that we can keep both story and discussion seperated. I hope this will work!

Mattius, are you 19 in the Elven age, or are you 19 by human standards, then you would be a very young elf. So, do you want to be friends? Idea!!- Maybe you could have been a guard for Lothlorien for a while, and I met you while wandering the woods, as I love to do. Or, we could have just met near Lothlorien or something? What do you think?
Idea for my character~
I am traveling in the woods in search of the beast to get revenge. A few days before some of elven gaurds of my land and I had gone out to hunt down the beast. The Beast found us first, though. I am the only one who survived the attack, so I know hunt the Beast in anger, seeking revenge. As you can tell I have a very fiery temper. smilies/wink.gif smilies/biggrin.gif

Keep up the good work ppl. I think everyone is trying very hard to make a good story and that we have succeeded so far.
Matthias, a question for you, does th beast have to be catlike (since Rothallë is also able to turn herself into a cat: Muirë=cat, remember. In my first post on the blue mountains she dissapears behing a tree as a cat, to come back in her sorcerers form)
I suggest the beast should not be catlike, or be catlike and people will get confused whether it is something evil or Rothallë in the form of a cat hunting the forests. That would create mixed feelings about Rothallë in the forest and village (Hillfoot, just outside the forest).
Let me know what you guys think of these ideas,
Love,
Rothallë the Black/Iaurlachien
Mattius
08-29-2002, 03:50 PM
Indeed.
Originally I had no intention to make the beast cat-like in appearnce. I thought it maybe some twisted creature of Sauraman's evil experiment to create the perfect soldier before he gave life to the Uruk-Hai. Perhaps we could make it sort of like Beorn from 'The Hobbit' in that it can change its shape from different animals. I am sure we can fit it into the story anyway.
And regarding the age of my character, yes Mattius is 19 in normal years and is very young as an elf, this is part of the reason why he belives himself to be more akin to the race of men (for more reasons see my profile above).
Till next time,
Matt

If you keep the beast non-specific in shape with many traits it can be much more menacing. Everyone has something they fear, a polymorphus creature that feeds on those fears is always good so that those who fear cats- see cat like 'qualities' in the beast, if you fear the Uruk-Hai it those you see. Am I making sense? I do tend to babble, sorry. Welcome back Faye, see you in the story in a moment.

I think that's a great idea, because I didn't really know what to make of this black beast so far. We'll go with the idea of the beast being able to change formes to match different persons fears (sometimes even at the same time, like in: two people looking at it and both seeing something else)
Love,

You guys, something not really relating to the story here. What do you think of faye took. That is, are you happy about the way she's acting on this thread and the blue mountains thread. Myself, I've got a bit of a problem with her. She seems a nice person and has posted many posts (but if all her posts are like the one I've seen on the blue mountains so far, that is not something great). On the other hand,
* the piece of the story she put on the blue mountains is hardly three lines long and does not follow or contribute to the story at all
*she uses a character that she has used in a lot of "fake" rpg's on this topic
*apparently she does not read what is said in important posts on this thread because she put a post that wasn't a story on the blue mountains thread, telling who her character was.
*I've recieved email from her several times telling me: Let's boycot that intruder Mattias. I do not agree with her for Mattias is a great writer and contributes a lot to the story.
Faye, if you read this, please take no offense from me, but I would very much like it for you to WRITE A PIECE OF THE STORY INSTEAD OF JUST HANGING AROUND RUINING A GOOD RPG. You seem to not even know what the story is about and from now on, posts not belonging to our rpg should be on this tread - which we decided to be our discussion thread.
Love,
Rothallë the Black,

If the message above should not be read by most of the people in the rpg the blue mountains I will have to take the post above to the thread- the blue mountains. Just for once, because I think faye should adapt herself to our standards or be gone one way or another.

I'll go with whatever you think best Iaurlachien as you developed this thread. I am not usually an RPGer and just fancied coming here to exercise my brain and will go with whichever rules you set, as RPG instigator. As far as I can see the whole point was as the title suggests 'having a real feel of Middle Earth' and we must all abide by that whether we've just arrived or have been mulling over this for a week or two.

Name: Borin Iceplate
Race: Dwarf
Age: dunno, how old wud he have had 2 b to fight in the dwarf-ork war at moria????? anyone know??
Bio: Borin lives in the Blue Mountains where Thorin used 2 live b4 he tried to re-capture the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. He did not wish to travel as he dislikes it and only wishes to remain in peace for the rest of his days. the only time he fought was i the terrible Dwarf-Ork war at Moria and afterwards he returned to the blue mountains

Sorry, I've been so busy with school!
Reading this discussion that has been going on lately, I don't know if I should ignore Faye's post or not.
Sorry Faye, but I don't think it was a convenient time to bring in your character. Not only does it make it hard to answer the first questions and yours at once, but you're not supposed to wake up until a day or two. I'm sure we'd all like you to keep posting, though. Just pay close attention to the story and write more than a few lines at a time.

I think the time has come to discuss what is going to happen next regarding the plot.
I had the idea that it could sort of attack the shire or something and, seeing as though no man is allowed to enter the shire, radagast the hobbit and an elf could go and talk to some of the hobbits.
Get back to me on it anyways,

I think Faye got fed up with us. Sorry, Faye.
Mattius- I wouldn't mind if you played the female hobbit, though I wonder if you can keep up with 3 characters. Since you are becoming this character, I suppose I'll ignore Faye's last post and continue.
As for a name for the hobbit, how about Emerald or Lily?
Mattius

Forgive me for posting so sparingly... I've been really busy, and I'm also a part of a lot of other RPGs at the moment. I also haven't been posting with as much quality as I should. I'll try to improve that, although writing is something my brain wears the batteries out on fast... see?! I can't even do a good (or at least well-worded) analogy right now!! Gah!
Anyway, I'll try to post more often and better form this point on. This RPG is going pretty well. We've all met up without any problems.

09-11-2002, 09:25 PM
Hey, Faye! I'm glad that you didn't get upset with us. If you'd still like to be a part of the RPG, you're welcome to, though you might want to let Mattius know, since he's planning to play the hobbit girl as Lily.
The soonest time you should introduce your character in the RPG is probably sometime the next day (in the story). If you wish to continue playing, please remember these two things:
1. Post more than 3 lines. Your contribution to the RPG should be fairly long. Remember to have your character interact with other characters.
2. Read the story carefully. Whatever someone writes in the story, you must follow along with it.
If you listen to the suggestions, I promise that none of us with have anymore problems with you. Just get along with everyone else, and if you have any questions about the rules, you can always read the topic, NEW FREESTYLE-RPG POLICIES. I hope that helps.
Mattius- I will email Iaurl tomorrow, as it is too late for me to do so right now.

What don't you understand? We will need a female hobbit soon. Who knows, perhaps I or someone else will write that the hobbit stirs in her sleep, and then you will know when to come in. If you still are confused and don't wish to be part of the RPG, you're welcome to leave. You shouldn't be part of an RPG if you don't want to.

Alright, it has been three weeks since our story owner has posted. I emailed her last week, but she has not replied. Maybe Iaurl is on vacation or something, or perhaps not. The thing is that we cannot go on much longer without anyone playing Rothalle, and we especially cannot go on without a story owner. So, what do you suppose we should do?
P.S. Sorry I haven't contributed much in the RPG lately. I've been feeling so busy lately and haven't had time to think about it. I promise I'll try to find that time as soon as I can.

Yes I agree with Mattius. Maybe she got called back to home for some reason.
Mattius
09-22-2002, 12:09 PM
well, i have made the group split into two so maybe Rothalle could leave this group for some reason but she is an important character cuz she influences Calentoliel. One thing that could happen is that Rothalle cud tell Calentoliel about her real past, whatever it may be, and then be captured for some reason with only Endereth and Calentoliel being able to rescue her
anyways these are only ideas

Greetings all ye fellow RPers,
I have noticed that all of us have some unsettled issue in our past. In the post I made where the Black Beast communicated his thoughts, I was subtly suggesting that a resolution be made (far into the future) in which it helps us settle these. I also think that it could become a situation where we all came together because of these fates, that we are 'specially selected,' so to speak, to have our prayers answered. I think we could work this into the plot very nicely.
Does it sound like a good idea or is it too cheesy and complicated?
Please let me know!

I'm trying to think of something, Mattius, but today I am completely brain dead. I am mentally drained. Hmmm. Perhaps we should create more obstacles in finding the black beast.
Ithaeliel also wants me to tell everyone that she is extremely sorry for not being on lately. Apparently, her dad's computer has a virus or something.
Brinniel

Faye-
About that last post. Your character transforming is a good idea, but could you delete that post and put it back in later in the story? Right now it's not a good time in the story to add it in. It would be better if that part had an explanation or reason why it was happening at that moment. For example, you could have her do something signifigant or save the group before she transforms. (Kind of like an angel earning her wings.) Also, it'll make it easier for me to respond considering my character is unconsious at the moment.
Also, could you please post a new profile for your character? Since she's not really a hobbit anymore, your bio is not really accurate.

I'm pretty sure she was only playing Rothalle. I'm happy to carry her along until she's back with us so to speak and I won't do anything shocking to her character without consultation or if someone gets to her first. Hi guys!
I have contemplated for some time copying this entire RPG into a fanfiction. It's one of the best I've ever seen as far as organization and originality, and I think it wil continue to go well in the future. Tell me what you think of this idea and I will act accordingly. Brinniel
10-09-2002, 04:38 PM
What a great idea, Ith! I've been actually thinking about this myself and it would be really cool if we turned this into a fan fic. If we did this, it should probably be done in chapters. Where each chapter should end and begin is for us to decide.

Whoa, calm down, Ith. The last time someone posted was about five days ago and you don't really have to worry about it until day ten.
I would post now, but I don't feel like it's the right time for me to post, if you know what I mean. Personally, I think the way Mattius ended his last post, Auriel should be next to continue. But if you would like to post, Ith, you're welcome to.

So so sorry for holding everyone up. I've pmed everyone with the reason why and if I've missed anyone just know I'm sorry and I do have a good reason, honest. Back to normal posting duties now I promise. For everyone's information, I have taken everyone in the vague direction of Tom Bombadil's house as according to the map I'm keeping of prodeedings that was fairly close to where we were. I've left them at the edge of the barrows. Perhaps someone could come up with an idea for next. Suggestions to be rejected or adapted or adopted by everyone:
Mattius ends up 'Barrowed' until he gets back from the US when someone can save him or he can save himself.
We stay with Tom Bombadil and he helps us in some way.
We reach their house and they are missing!
Oh, who knows. Turn us round and take us somewhere else if you wish. It was just a train of thought to help us along. BTW, I thought the fanfic is a neat idea.
Many apologies again, I hope you enjoy the US Matt. Bon voyage.
Brinniel

Don't worry about it, Auriel. You had a good excuse and we all have other lives besides the Barrow Downs. *gasp*
As for your ideas, they're good. If Mattius ends up in trouble, it'll add more excitement to the story, And then when he comes back from the US, he can decide how he wants to be saved. I also like the idea that we go to ol' Tom's house and he and Goldberry are not there.

Thanks for being so supportive. I had only a vague idea so I'm happy to put poor Matt in the hole and we can go to the house and find it's residents missing or the other way round but we've all got to come up with the details together. I have no reasons for the events in my head!
Ok, Matt we won't bury you till Friday!

ps- quick note about the protectors i am slowly introducing to mattius' story. i thought they could have been sent by Manwe "at the beginning of time" to guide chosen indivduals to destroy the beast (similar to the way the wizards were supposed to guide but not fight themselves). maybe mattius could have been chosen or whatever but i want to get a bit, after i get back from the USA, where Mattius speaks person to person with the head of the protectors in private but we'll see later anyways
good night!

Olo Gamwich-
I don't know if you've read this thread, but hopefully you have. Your post was great and we could probably use another character in the story, but you should've let us know on this thread that you were joining. You need to give us a full warning and wait for an ok by one of us before posting.
Also, you need to write a profile for your character. It is important that you do this before you write your next post.

I'm afraid I am rather confused with your last post, Auriel. How did Mattius get back to the others unharmed, yet without his sword?
When I wrote my last post, I meant for Mattius to be captured by something, but if he is not, then we need some explanation on how he escaped and why he did not help Calentoliel. Otherwise, I will edit my post and cut Mattius out of the end of it. Let me know on what you think we should do.

Olo hasn't written in this thread yet and he hasn't responded to my PM. If you don't mind, I'm going to post an ooc post in the RPG so that Olo will see it. I promise I will delete the post as soon as I get a response from him.

First of all apologies again for my stupidity, you can tell why I was hounded out of the main site. Sorry.
I have altered my post, disappeared Matt and left his sword in the wood as you wanted. I hope that is all O.K.
I'm working to mad deadlines off in the Mortal World which are resulting in me typing gibberish, sorry. That combined with the fact squirrels have got into my loft from the beech tree that overhangs my house and scamper around above my computer is all making it difficult to concentrate. So, so sorry, run me through with a Mordal blade.
Brinniel

Don't worry about it. We all make mistakes. And the way you fixed it was excellent.
My only concern for now is Olo. From what his last post said (which he later deleted), he is no longer planning to be part of the RPG. So, my question is should we find a way to drop Olo out of the story or should we carry another unplayed character for awhile?

Goodness, good luck with it. I had no idea it was that long. It's hard to tell how long a non-forum based story would become when we're used to seeing it scroll along here. Brin and Ith, it may be easier to spot continuity errors once it's cut and pasted somewhere else and correct them. Just a thought. Better get back to posting in the tale itself or poor Radagast may be killed off by an orc who doesn't like people who can only post sporadically!

Faye's been around, but she doesn't seem to post often.
As for Olo, I'm pretty sure he left for good. If we need someone to play him, I have a friend that I MIGHT be able to talk into playing him. She an awesome writer, a huge fan of Tolkien, and I've been trying to encourage her on this site; especially in the RPGs.
Ithaeliel
11-30-2002, 07:50 PM
Would this be Elizabeth you are referring to?
If she doesn't agree, I'd be happy to take on Olo's character.
Another idea would be to 'kill him off,' although it sounds somewhat cruel and morbid.
Brinniel
11-30-2002, 09:20 PM
Yeah, this would be Liz of course. :D
When she came to my house last week, I gave her a tour of the Downs and we ended up hanging out in the Mayhem section. She hasn't read this RPG yet, but I think I'll email it to her along with a plea to join.
Two unplayed characters does seem a bit much, but I'd hate to kill Olo off. The way he came into the story was quite interesting and it is a shame about the misunderstanding we had with him.
We can't kill Rothalle off either; she is too essential to the story, plus there is still a chance that Iaurl might come back someday. But still, we can't go on with this many unplayed characters. The more players, the faster the story will go.

I'll do my best not to let you down. You're very talented young people. You should think about getting things written outside this genre and possibly look into publication.

Is it possible to change the name of our RPG cuz "The Blue Mountains" really isn't a good title. Anyone got any ideas?
Ithaeliel
12-03-2002, 10:02 PM
......anything that doesn't have to do with a location, because we really have been taking a lot of switchbacks so far when it comes to that. Here's a few ideas that my lame title-phobic brain came up with:
The Black Beast (so original, ne?)
Bared Souls
Hunting Fear: Quest to destroy the Black Beast
Speaking of such matters, I was just remembering how in the beginning we didn't want this to be a quest. Well, our hopes were in vain, but I frankly don't regret it, because this is the coolest quest I've ever embarked on smilies/biggrin.gif.
Edit: The only problem with needing a title change is that only the RPG starter (Iaur, who has taken an extended leave of absence) can edit the title post. Our only other option is to do some begging towards the moderators.

I'm happy with 'Blue Mountains' even if it does remind me of Laurel and Hardy (unpleasant but true). It was where we met and if our story follows the cyclical nature of Tolkien (which it should if we still want that 'real feel' thing going on) that is where we will take leave of each other. Either way I don't mind I'm just glad to be here. I've been persuaded into the 'Shire' and although enjoyable and challenging down there it's not quite as spontaneous as we are. I plan and redraft all day, it's nice to just tap away freely here. When we eventually wind this down I hope we can all play again.
Brinniel
12-04-2002, 05:14 PM
Speaking of winding down, have you seen Mithadan's latest thread here? He says to start winding down our RPGs.
Unfortunately, I feel that we aren't even close to winding down yet. Since this thread haven't even been going for 4 months and we have short number of players, we have been moving at a slower pace than the other RPGs. Perhaps the mods will understand if we tell them that we need more time, but still I think we all need to start posting more often.
Mithadan
12-04-2002, 10:31 PM
As I said, winding down does not mean today or even next week. But I would like an estimate of how much longer this RPG will run. One month? Two?
A major part of RPGing is actually finishing a game. This was seriously lacking in the old Freestyle forum; it was open for about 8 months and only 3 or 4 games were actually completed. The rest were abandoned or wandered around. When there is never an end in sight, players eventually get bored and leave.
If you finish a game, you can always spin off another with similar characters, or try something new. There's a number of people who want to join a game, but the older RPGs are either closed for new members or are too far along for someone to step in comfortably.
Brinniel
12-05-2002, 07:26 PM
Thanks for clearing that up, Mithadan. I didn't expect for you to force us to close by next week, but was afraid you would in 3-4 weeks, which I'm glad you won't.
As much as I hate to talk about winding down (I love this RPG and have never had so much fun), we probably should have an estimate of when we will finish this game. I'm guessing maybe 3 months? What do all of you think?
Ithaeliel
12-05-2002, 08:09 PM
I think this RPG could wind down within one and a half months if everything goes smoothly (which it will). In my next post I plan to start "winding it down" so to speak. I think at this point we need to form a resolution, and it must include explanations to all the strange events that have occurred within the RPG. First, though, I wanted to OK that with everyone. If you think we need more time and you don't want to wind down just yet, please say so.

Yes, a couple of months sounds good to me.
I'm planning to do a lot of explaining in my next post when Calentoliel awakens and begins her recovery. That might not be for a few days though.
My reasons: 1) It is too late for me to write now (it's nearly 2:30 AM) 2) I'll probably be busy with schoolwork for the next couple of days (I hate history) 3) My computer is....oh no....broken! Luckily, my old computer is now hooked up to the internet so I could tell you this, but it's (arg) Windows 95, and is sooo sloowww that I don't think could stay on here for hours and have the computer still in one piece (I am very impatient). But hopefully I will be able to get on more often by the end of the week (as my good computer should be fixed by then).

Sorry, just trying to draft something with the right atmosphere. I'm trying to gently increase Radagast's powers and remove his doubts etc over a period of time so that when we finally face 'Beastie'he can be of some use. He's not a dramatic blast it with a bolt of blue light kind of guy (which is more my own personal style) so I have to get into character!

I know that I said that I would post on Friday, but I suppose I forgot that I was busy that night. I was also quite busy today shopping. I'll try to post tomorrow, but it is my mom's birthday that day, so I can't guarantee anything.
I'm sorry if I'm holding any of you up on posting, but this time of the year is very stressful for me. This is the time when I'm busy with extra schoolwork, orchestra concerts, volunteering, going broke on shopping for gifts, and finding time to wrap them all.
I'll feel much better when Christmas break begins. And even then, I'm not sure I will be able to post here for a week. I am going to California for Christmas, and I'm not sure I'll be able to use a computer. I'll try, though.

Greetings All,
I am 'making' banners for all the stories on Rohan; these banners are hanging from the rafters of The White Horse Inn.
I've planned your banner to be a silhouette of a mountain peak in blue on a white background. If you would prefer something else, let me know!
Also, if you still want the name of the RPG changed, I can do it for you. Just give me the new name.
One tip which might help out with all the absences during the holiday season: Write your post(s) ahead of time and send it to a fellow gamer, who can insert it where appropriate, or, allow another gamer to "carry" your character in your absence. You can also do this for characters whose writers have disappeared for more than two weeks. I hope these suggestions help you move the game along faster.

Welcome back, Mattius!
I wonder where everyone else could be... have they all gone on vacation? This RPG is beginning to lag because of the long periods between posts. I suppose after Christmas break is over we'll be going again.
I had a question: this is quite a memorable RPG, and I'm a bit sad that it's winding down finally. Perhaps, if it gets accepted, we could do a continuation, an entirely different story, that takes place after the quest is finished, but with the same characters and all. Is that a far-fetched idea, do you think? smilies/rolleyes.gif

France, Mattius? *Brinn unsuccessfully tries to hide her jealousy* I spent my entire vacation in California visiting family (exactly the same thing I did last year). My family visited El Cerrito, Placerville, and Woodland, but we couldn't even bother with a trip to San Francisco (stupid rain). Well, I hope everyone had a more thrilling Christmas and New Year than I did. (I'll stop babbling now)
I like your idea, Ith. BTW, are you still working on that fanfic?

Brin, it wasnt as good as it sounds believe me, anyways I thought on the fan fic it said they were no longer excepting new stuff smilies/frown.gif very sad as our rpg is a great piece of work
i would love to keep these characters for something new. However i would say this, that it will probably be the ones of us who post most of the time who keep their characters ie myself, brin, Ithaeliel, Auriel and i would like Iaurlachien if at all possible as we owe it to her as she gave life to this rpg!

01-05-2003, 01:14 PM
BTW, are you still working on that fanfic?
Yes, but as you know, I can't send it in. I wonder when fanfiction and art are going to be up and running again?
All right! People who like my ideas... smilies/biggrin.gif wow, that's a first! (Kidding) In that case, what kind of plot should it be? Maybe something that has more to do with the populated places in Middle-earth (Gondor, Mirkwood, etc.). And I think we should also keep it open to other players as well, besides Calen, Ender, Mattius, Radagast and the others, but I am way way open to suggestions.

I didn't take it that way; I'm just saying it could be one of those invite-only things or it could not. Sorry!

I think the BW is trying to get caught up on all the fanfic that has been sent in. Hopefully he'll be ready for new stories sometime soon.
I agree that we should bring only the active players of this RPG into another one. I really don't want to deal with inactive characters again. I do wish Iaurl would return, as her character is quite important, but I believe her gone for good :( . I do think we should leave the RPG open to new players. It'll be fun with new characters, plus the RPG would move at a faster pace.

Auriel, what was your idea of how to get the group back to the Blue Mountains? I don't want to post unless I spoil your idea see!

Yay! The thread's up again! Looks like we lost several posts, so I guess we'll have to catch up on what was lost.
Sorry I haven't posted in the RPG. I don't really have any ideas at the moment on what to write. I was hoping Faye would post next, but apparently she disappeared. So keep posting and I'll come up with something.

Yes, I wondered what had happened. We may not be the most regular postees on the site but we do keep going religiously.
Keep thinking my dear, I think I'm ready to face that beastie!

Auriel, in reply to your PM I think that Radagast should come to the aid of Mattius.

This past week I have not been able to get on the computer and I apologize for not posting recently. Unfortunately, I'm feeling rather tired at the moment (it's 11:05 PM here) and am not up to posting. I will try to post ASAP.

The new RPG forums have been up for three months now. You are invited to come and discuss how well they are working on the thread A Measure of Success (http://forum.barrowdowns.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=21&t=000012).
Come and share your thoughts, Folks!

Well, I've just read the final post everyone. It's been a joy to write this and a pleasure to work with you all.
I suppose the thread will have to be closed and sent to Elvenholm. If you read back over it, it's surprisingly good you know!
Au revoir and anyone fancy a drink in the 'pub'?
Ithaeliel
02-11-2003, 04:15 PM
Actually, I thought that it would be nice to have a final post from everyone, describing a little bit of where they are headed after their experiences, and perhaps summing up what exactly went on with the opposition between the beast and the companions.
Also, I wanted to discuss a bit of a plan for a proposed sequel to The Blue Mountains, then expand on it enough to submit to the reviewers for Rohan. Until then, the Pub sounds wonderful! smilies/biggrin.gif It's been a real joy to work with all of you. This is the first successful RPG I've played in, and I'm so glad to see it come out as such a great story.
Thank you all,
Endereth, Ranger of Lorien

Hey!
Three things for me to say!
1) Ith, I am so sorry!! I began writing my post and I just kept writing it and it became really long and ended in the beast's destruction. I went to school and I sat on the tram and then it suddenly hit me! I had forgot to mention Endereth in any of it at all. My apologises!! It was not intened.
2) Ith, great final post, was absolutly perfect!!
3) It has been mentioned before but I just want to kind straighten it out, are any of you interested in a new RPG with the same characters (if you want)??
Thanks!
Matt

Hey, there's no problem Mattius smilies/wink.gif. That's perfectly okay.
As I said above, YES!!! Let's start discussing the new RPG. Hmm, I'm thinking contributions for a starting place... it could be in our separate homelands, or we could meet up in one place. For some reason Bree keeps popping into my mind.
Brinniel
02-11-2003, 04:47 PM
A sequel sounds great, but I still don't feel as if we're done with the current RPG yet. Like Ith said, I think we all need to contribute one more time. It is time for the group to divide and take their own paths, for now at least.
Bree could work as a meeting except for the fact that it's a place I don't think my character would normally go to. But if she was sent an invitation to go there, I suppose it'll be all right.

I like the idea of one last post each but concerning a new RPG I thought that you had to choose from a list or can you offer one to the mod's to consider?
One last thing, Auriel, what you think of the idea that Radagast and Mattius stay togther as mentor and pupil? I think it would be good as he has no real father figure and is only 19 and this is extremly young in elf years. I guess he has come to full growth as he has spent some many years in the world of men!

Same with my character, even if she is a ranger. I don't know; it could be anyplace- Rohan, Gondor, Rhun, Misty Mountains, etc. Could even be Mordor. Also, another advantage is most of us are immortals, so we could set it for a much later time than The Blue Mountains, even after the War of the Ring. Or we could even be part of the War of the Ring. Really this has endless possibilities for location, time, and purpose.
Mattius- choosing a storyline from the list is a common thing in the Shire, but in Rohan you are expected to submit an original proposal.

Oh ok then thats okay. I think it would be good to set it a fair while in the future. Anyone got any ideas? What about Moria? Harad? Anywhere is a possibility!
I think it would be good to include other RPGers who wern't involved in The Blue Mountains and perhaps not include Rothalle or the hobbits as they seem to have completely vanished! Thats why I mentioned Khazard-Dum, perhaps an attempted re-take of it by some dwarves so a few more people could be involved!
Also, I think 1 last post by everyone going their seperate ways is a good idea and I will post mine when Auriel has replied to my prior question about Mattius and Radagast.
Finally...
so we could set it for a much later time than The Blue Mountains, even after the War of the Ring
Mattius was born in the woods of Lothlorien ten years before the War of the Ring.
eek, I thought it was set after the War of the Ring, by nine years!

As Mattius just said, I believe our story has already taken place after the War of the Ring. But you are right on the fact that we are all immortals. We could meet up much later.

Hi Folks,
Give me a shout when you want me to close the game and move it to Elvenhome. That should also include this discussion thread, which should not be used to plan a new game. Please do that through PMs or at The White Horse Inn. Discussion of gaming can also take place there, and not just development of characters. You can also use #Elbereth to chat about a new game. smilies/smile.gif
Looking forward to seeing what new game you come up with,
Bethberry

I liked the end of that post, Matt. LOL :D
Honestly, I think that post sums everything up. I really don't have anything else to add. I think we have our ending, unless anyone disagrees with me.
I've had a great time writing with you all (and I mean it). I believe I'm extremely lucky to experience my very first RPG with you guys. :)
I can't wait to start up our next game together. So, what do you say about meeting up at The White Horse Inn?

I did a short epilogue for myself, if that's all right. If it's innappropriate, just tell me and I'll delete.
Indeed, to the White Horse!

In the White Horse Inn, shall we use our nicks or our names from the story? (I think we should all do either or)
Bêthberry

I would suggest you use the names which help you best develop your ideas for the game.

PS. Shall I close the threads now?

I don't know if Auriel has seen the RPG since it finished. Perhaps we should wait until she does see it before closing the threads. We want an opinion from her to see that she's satisfied with the ending.
Ithaeliel

Indeed, I think we should wait for Auriel's opinion before closing the thread. Speaking of which, Auriel, doug*platypus said that he really liked your characterization of Radagast in the thread "Favorite Roleplaying Characters" in the Barrow-Downs. He said it ws very well-written and much different from the whiny Radagast the Brown who visited Gandalf. Big compliment, ne? I'd have to agree with doug, though, you did a great job with Radagast.
On a different note, I did this nice sketch of all the characters (my interpretations- some aren't that accurate) a while back, and I was thinking I might scan it in and post it here. Better hurry, though; don't want to drag this thread out too long!
Brinniel
02-15-2003, 01:43 PM
You did a sketch, Ith? Well, that makes my day. smilies/biggrin.gif I remember begging and begging you to do one since I knew you were such a great artist. I didn't know you actually did it though.

Oh thanks everyone so much for waiting for me. (Over worked as usual and neglecting you all)
Yes, I am more than happy with the end. Very cinematic. I'm happy to have Radagast accompany Mattius for a little while longer too. He's still got a lot of wizardry to re-learn as well!
I had no idea about the nice message by Mr Platypus. I've just signed up to work with him! I am blushing profusely. I think I need a pint. See you in the pub lads!
