Sorry if this is a stupid question to all you learned people in the field of middle earth, but in the book 'the hobbit', Gandulf and the dwarves mention the necromancer. He seems to have disapeared in LOTR though, or is he Sauron.

Sorry, I have probably got everyhting confused.

That's not a stupid question. Yes, the Necromancer from the Hobbit is later discovered to be Sauron.
