The nature of Myth
This promises to be interesting; I'm a relative newcomer to this space called cyber, and I've never had the chance to be in at the beginning of something like this. Are we inventing ground rules as we go? A discussion of the Proffessor's books necessarily leads to his influences and sources. Old literature and history have always interested me, and reading the trilogy in junior high (somewhere about the Second Age of my life), helped me with concepts I later studied in classes concerning things like "Beowulf" and the Arthurian cycle (silly me-hobbitlike, I had thought that they were just great stories!). Will we be straying too far afield to discuss Joseph Campbell's theories on the need of the Myth and the Hero, or shall we content ourselves with what a hurried snack on the road to Rivendell might have consisted of? Either way, I think I'm going to like it here.
Happy Beltane,

Re: Welcome!
Well, Alan, that is a good question. And one I already know the answer to. We are going to discuss all of that! And more.
But what I'm going to do is keep the Middle-Earth snacks and facts in THE BOOK forum and add a new forum for more heady subjects such as you mentioned (though I am positive that some of the Tolkien talk will get very heady, too ... at least I hope it does).
Hmmmm....I wonder what to call it. Got any suggestions?

Welcome, Celebringnar! Glad to see you've started by posting. Some people seem shy about saying anything.
Again, welcome. Enjoy!

It's really impressive how this board has grown over the space of about a year.

How very cool. The first post on the book forum I believe? It's funny to see how the old posts look like. The first thing I really apreceate: A line between the post and the signature. I can imagine that it could lead to confusion. Way the go BW smilies/biggrin.gif

Comming back to our roots. The first posts and the beginning of a legacy. I was interested in seeing how it all started, and here it is on paper...I mean computer screen.
