Speaking of obsessions and religions and geekery (not suggesting the three are the same, either), just this afternoon, I was thinking that after I leave school, I should get a job in a bookshop, and then I realised that I'd put them out of business.

Customer: I was wondering if you could recommend any mystery novels?
Me: Stuff mysteries! Read Tolkien!

Customer 2: Do you have any Starwars books?
Me: Starwars? Are you joking? What kind of idiot reads Starwars? You freak! Here, why don't you have a look at this nice copy of the Silmarillion?

And so on... <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

But yeah, Tolkienist sounds good, but I'm sure there's got to be a better word than that. &quot;Tolkienist&quot; looks strange in print.

Tolkien - toll' keen

Tolkienist does sound awfully professional. Like an academic who gets paid to research and teach Tolkien's works.

Tolkien Fan is probably more descriptive of most of us.

Tolkien Freak/Geek/Nerd is certainly an accurate description of quite a few!

Now Tolkienista has a sound I like! Sort of a revolutionary junta feel to it.

Tolkienian I suppose is descriptive of things that are like Tolkien's writing

A Tolkienary is one who follows his &quot;teachings.&quot; These are the folk on the street corner!

Incidentally, for those who didn't know, his own faith, and the teachings he would recommend, is Christianity. The Tar Ost-in-Eruhir link in my signature is available for those with such an interest.

I know toll-KEEN is right, but I still say toll-KEE-en most of the time because it was my original interpretation. Just like I can't bring myself to say SOW-ron.

&quot;Tolkienist&quot; sounds more like someone who performs Tolkienistic feats, like an &quot;alienist&quot; or a &quot;hypnotist&quot;. There's an air of charlatanism about it. How about &quot;Tolkienite&quot;? &quot;Tolkienism&quot; as a form of government?

Here are a few more terms to describe different Tolkienistic disciplines:
&quot;Tolkienology&quot;
&quot;Tolkieneneology&quot;
&quot;Tolkienography&quot;
&quot;Tolkienophonics&quot;

See, it's an issue. Gilthalion said TOLL-keen (if I read his post right). H-I says toll-KEEN, as does the BBC dramatization of LotR. I say TOLL-kin or TOLL-kee-in. Oh well.

Btw, the dumbest JRRT mispronunciation I ever heard is in the BBC dramatization of The Hobbit, in which Gollum is accented 2d syllable -- ga-LOOM. I swear to God.

I personally pronounce it TOLL-kin (or "The great one," depending on what mood I'm in smilies/smile.gif ) I've heard somebody pronounce it TOLK-yin. Strange

I personally don't think I'm a Tolkienist, I consider myself a Barrow-Wight. smilies/biggrin.gif But for those who don't know what a Barrow-Wight is (Oh so poor uninlightened fools), I'm just a "REALLY REALLY REALLY big Tolkien fan"

"Speaking of obsessions and religions and geekery (not suggesting the three are the same, either), just this afternoon, I was thinking that after I leave school, I should get a job in a bookshop, and then I realised that I'd put them out of business"
Hmm, I was thinking the exact same thing not very long ago (there is also the prospect of getting deals on books)
AAAAAHH!!! I just had another great idea. A bookstore that carries only Tolkien and Tolkien-related books. It would be awesome (however, probably not too profitable; would have to be internet based)

Just so people know, a few things to take care of just so you know. J.R.R. Tolkien's FULL name is: John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Naturally, you'd think he'd go by "John" but he didn't. That was his first legal namel, but by friends and family he was addressed as: Ronald.
Another thing, Tolkien is pronounced: Tol-ken. So many people pronounce it wrong, it drives me crazy.

Aosama, I like Ent-Hugger smilies/wink.gif. Though I'm trying to imagine Treebeard's reaction to a frenzied embrace by something 1/3 his size and can't really picture him being anything but extremely puzzled.

My nearest and dearest have usually referred to me as a Tolkienphile, which is a word I rather like. Tolkienista works too, though it implies a level of militancy (in the sense of being able to recite the Silmarillion from memory and have aneurisms about whether or not Bombadil was a Maia) that I'm not prepared to live up to.

I swear I replied to this...but I guess it got lost when the forum moved...

Tolkiendili may sound Tolkienish, but it sounds too much like 'Tolkien dilly'...:p

I like 'Barrow Wight' personally...or Elf...but then that would not describe all Tolkien fans. But then...should we all be under one title? There are many types of Tolkien fans- film fans, book fans, both fans, book obsessors....perhaps we should come up with lots of names?

As for me, I like the term Tolkienist much better then Tolkienite, which sounds like a name of a fossil. Even though it does have the implication of a religious characteristics, but going around convincing our friends to read Tolkien and virtually forcing a lotr copy into their hands doesn't seem a lot different from going around preaching Christianity and giving out little booklets. At least, that's how I see it.

I've been called a "Tolkienatic," which is apparently a cross between "Tolkien" and "fanatic". Hmm...

Tolkienistas!! To arms!! Lets take over!!

Hehe! I saw an interview by Jonathan Ross with Sean Astin and Andy Serkis on the premier of the RotK film, when Andy Serkis described the "Tolkien purists" who were up in arms at some of the "liberties" taken by the films as the Tolkienista . I thought it was rather a good label myself.

On that basis, of course, I would not describe myself as one of the Tolkienista. And I certainly don't have sufficient in-depth knowledge to pass myself off as a Tolkienologist. A more moderate and less knowledgeable Tolkienite, perhaps.:rolleyes: :D

Neil, the bathroom's free! Unlike Middle-earth under the Tolkienite Junta!

I'm most often called Tolkienite or Tolkien Fan. I really like Ent-hugger and Middle-earthling though! :) How about Tolkienoholic? :rolleyes:

I pronounce it 'Toll-Key-En', which is probably wrong.

Tolkienist sounds like you are AGAINST Tolkien like 'racist' is for people who are against people of different race. Heh.

I'm a hobbit, most days.

But here's a story: I usually dress very casually for church (torn jeans? plus hobbit-shirt & jacket) , and that was OK with my pastor until I started leading worship. Then he bugged me to tidy up a bit. So I wore my very best elven-dress to Sunday morning service.

I was up at the microphone just before the service when he said: "You look nice."

I said: "I'm an elf."

Dead silence. So I started the service.

I've always gone by Tolkienite, but I'm growing pretty fond of Ent-hugger. I think, that as the frequenters of different sections of the 'Downs have their own nicknames (for example, Mirthies), there's no reason why different types of fans can't have thier own. Example: Ringer might go for a movie fan, and Tolkienite/ist for a book fan. But then again, there are specialized interests, as I've noticed by the developing terms (thank you, Keeper of Dol Goldur) that I've heard in reference to myself: Glorfiholic, Viggonite, Faraboriholic... Why can't we all just pick what we prefer, instead of trying to decide on one name?

PS- It's Trekker, not Trekkie ;)

Well, Ringers seems to be a popular term, so I guess we on the Downs would be Dead Ringers, right?! :rolleyes:

But of course!

Ringies seems to be used a lot, as well, but only really by those who profess to fans themselves.... I've never been called a Ringie by a non-fan.

... the Ring is... bad. I don't want to be called a Ringer or a Ringie any more than I'd want the nickname "Frodo's Torment." :(

Silmarilli? .... Mithrillite? :rolleyes:

Wood Elf. Hobbit. Sinda, Noldo.

Even "Tolkien Fan" is better than ... Ringer. "Frodo's Torment." Augh!

Middle-Earthling - too sci-fi
Ringies - never have heard that, but it just sounds weird
Ringers - I always connect that label more with movie fans, than with fans of the books and works of Tolkien

But the only label I personally really dislike is Tolkien Freak, because it just makes us sound like we're crazy or something ;)
Anything else is fine by me :cool:

Hm... I've heard Tolkien Freak. I take it as a compliment that they've noticed, but the freak part gets to me a bit. That's when I want to start going around saying "He's a Mario freak" "He's a greasy food freak" "She's a makeup freak" "They're Legend of Zelda freaks". Honestly... who really cares what other people are interested in? It's our lives and our brains. Just because we choose to be interested in things that can EXPAND our intellect... Yep. I guess that makes us freaks. I still prefer Tolkienite.

I think that Tolkienists sounds ok, though I've never been called that before. People just call me "That girl that likes lotr"
So compared to that term, I'd say Tolkienists is a reasonably good name for us!

I like "Tolkienite" and "Tolkienista," the second one makes being a LotR freak sound fashionable! I have also heard "Ringnut," but I think my favorite is "Middle-earthling."

And it can be "Trekkie" or "Trekker."

Proud to be a Middle-earthling and a Trekkie! ::hugs Grima and Spock plushies::
