It's not your turn Lamadia, please read the quiz room rules first. You need to answer a question correctly before you get to ask one.

have fun!

The Saucepan Man 03-21-2003 10:37 AM

Thank you, Tar-P. Well, without further ado, what do the following have in common?

Aragorn
Aredhel
Bilbo
Frodo
Gandalf
Gollum
Melian
Pippin
Rian
Sam

Tricksy

Annunfuiniel 03-21-2003 11:14 AM

They all left their homes at some point for a long "journey", voluntarily or out of necessity, some for longer period than others and some never returned. But is that the right answer?? You tell me!

The Saucepan Man 03-22-2003 09:31 PM

Nope, that's not it.

The Saucepan Man 03-25-2003 07:56 AM

*bump*

Any takers?

Lalaith 03-25-2003 08:19 AM

My word, that *is* tricksy. Is it anything to do with captivity?

Lalaith 03-25-2003 08:30 AM

Oh, wait. Is it wood-elves?

Annunfuiniel 03-25-2003 09:17 AM

They all felt deep love/desire for someone/something (and it let them to a trouble of some sort)?
If that's not the right answer, and I'm preeetty sure it isn't, then could we have a small hint please?

The Saucepan Man 03-25-2003 12:14 PM

No, no and no!

Think less about what they do in the books and more about where they appear in the books.

Gil-Galad 03-26-2003 06:10 PM

they all appear first use less but then there honuored among most

(Gandlaf, old man but then great wizard
Sam hobbit gardener but then warrior among Men)

The Saucepan Man 03-26-2003 07:16 PM

No, I'm afraid not.

Another hint: They all open something, some of them more than once ...

Lalaith 03-27-2003 11:34 AM

*emerges hot and flustered from library rummage*
Ok. Their names all open book chapters.

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2003 11:48 AM

Hurrah! You are correct, Lalaith. Well done.

In fact, those are all of the characters whose names begin chapters in TH, LotR and the Silm (my own library rummaging was done when I first set the question ).

Over to you ...

Lalaith 03-28-2003 05:30 AM

Strewth. Setting these questions is a lot harder than answering them. I'll be with you again shortly.

Lalaith 03-28-2003 05:42 AM

Ok. All you clever people are going to think this is just easy-peasy.

Beren
Aldarion
Bilbo
Arwen
Galadriel

Tar-Palantir 03-28-2003 12:43 PM

They are all thieves:

Beren - stole a silmaril
Aldarion - stole the spirit from his wife
Bilbo - stole the Arkenstone
Arwen & Galadriel - stole my heart...

Lalaith 03-28-2003 03:02 PM

Ah, that's cute. But sadly not the right answer.
Although you're quite close, in some ways...

Lyra Greenleaf 03-29-2003 12:21 PM

did they all choose different names or something? i have to say i'm not sure bilbo ever did!

Lalaith 03-30-2003 03:11 PM

No, that's not right.
Like I said, Tar Palantir was kind of close.

Lalaith 04-02-2003 05:43 AM

*bump*
Would y'all like more clues?

Lyra Greenleaf 04-02-2003 11:47 AM

That'd be good

Lalaith 04-02-2003 11:58 AM

Well, Tar Palantir was closest with Bilbo and Beren.

elven maiden Earwen 04-06-2003 10:41 AM

Beren - saw a silmaril
Bilbo - saw the Arkenstone
Arwen & Galadriel - saw elasar???????? okay im done

Lyra Greenleaf 04-06-2003 10:52 AM

are they all associated with a jewel, Bilbo with the Arkenstone, beren with the Silmaril, Arwen with the Evenstar, Galadriel with Nenya, and Aldarion with...something?

Lalaith 04-06-2003 02:29 PM

Lyra, you're really close.
They're not just associated with the jewel, they did something with it...and Galadriel's isn't Nenya...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-06-2003 02:58 PM

They gave away a jewel? Bilbo gave the arkenstone to the wood-elves and men (although it was eventually returned and buried with Thorin), Beren gave the silmaril to Thingol in exchange for Luthien's hand, Arwen gave the white stone to Frodo, Galadriel gave the Elessar to Aragorn... I can't find Aldarion's though

-Sophia

Lalaith 04-06-2003 03:05 PM

yay! Sophia's got it.
Aldarion gave Erendis a jewel, a diamond to wear on her brow, before he married her.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-06-2003 03:07 PM

Yay! It'll take me a few minutes to think of a good one, but I'll be back with you pretty quick.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-06-2003 06:03 PM

Ok, this should be sufficiently difficult.. although you guys are pretty good... here goes.

Ingwe
Glaurung
Telperion
Finwe
Durin
Fangorn (the ent)

-Sophia

elven maiden Earwen 04-06-2003 08:15 PM

they all lived in the first age??

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-07-2003 12:46 PM

they did... but I was looking for something a little different.

Lyra Greenleaf 04-07-2003 12:59 PM

Are they all the sort of fathers of a race: Durin was one of the seven fathers of the dwarves, Fangorn one of the threee chief ents, Glaurung was father of dragons, telperion was the elder of the trees of Valinor, Ingwe and Finwe were two of the first three leaders of the elves? Or are they known as the "oldest"?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-08-2003 02:39 AM

Lyra, you're super close... Finwe's a bit of a stretch to get his link...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-09-2003 06:02 PM

I don't know if this clue will help, but here goes...
Ingwe
Glaurung
Telperion
Finwe
Durin
Fangorn (the ent)
and not Feanor (according to Mandos)

elven maiden Earwen had the key word...

-Sophia

Lalaith 04-09-2003 06:31 PM

They were all first? Finwe was the first to be slain in Aman, was he not?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-10-2003 12:08 AM

Bingo!

Finwe was the first slain in Aman
Ingwe was the first high king of the elves (his name also means 'first one')
Glaurung was the first of the dragons
Durin the first dwarf-father to awake
Telperion was the first tree to flower
Fangorn must have been the first of the ents if he was eldest...

Continue, Lalaith

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-14-2003 02:51 PM

Lalaith? Are you about?

Lalaith 04-15-2003 06:02 PM

So sorry! I went away for a few days and forgot I'd left an answer for this...anyway give me til tomorrow and I'll come up with something.

Lalaith 04-16-2003 04:50 AM

Here we go:
Gildor
Frodo
Galadriel
Legolas
Sam

This is a bit hard maybe so I'll give you two clues.
The answer is to be found within the text of Lord of the Rings. And there are others who also do this but they are not named specifically.

alaklondewen 04-16-2003 07:55 AM

They all sailed into the West?
