This is what it says under the Novices and Newcomers FAQ:

What you need to do is find a picture you like on the web somewhere, then right click on the picture, a little box will pop up, click on the bottow where it says Properties. Then another box will pop up, and towards the middle of the screen will be the part that says Address. Simply copy the address and then go to your own profile, and in the space where you are given to add your avatar pic, simply paste it there.
