Wow, just found this thread...

Name (that you go by): Lynn, Lynnie, Lynnard, Mom, Grandma...
Age: let's just say that if I were Frodo, I'd be leaving for Valinor next year with Gandalf.
Occupation: customer service rep for major insurance carrier
Future Aspirations: to retire and still afford my current lifestyle
Goal in life: to be a reflection of Christ's love
Short term goals: make it to Rivendell before the release of TTT
Passion: Christ, my Redeemer
Hobbies: reading, hiking, camping, watching movies, reading and posting on the Barrow Downs and other LotR sites
Famous for (okay this is where you get to brag about yourself): homemade salsa (hey, I'm from Texas!)

Fave book: LotR & anything else by Tolkien, anything by **** (system edit--just think diminutive for Richard) Francis, the Thomas Covenant double-trilogy by Donaldson, the Left Behind series by Jenkins/LaHaye, Maeve Binchey, early Robert Ludlum, Star Trek:TNG, DS9 & Voyager, and too many others to mention...
Fave movie: FotR, TTT, the 4 Star Trek:TNG movies, On Golden Pond, Shrek, and the HBO movie version of Greater Tuna.
Fave sport: soccer, equestrian events
Fave store: Half-Price Books, Barnes & Noble, Elf-Mart (or Wal-Mart to non-Tolkien people)
Fave music: Michael W. Smith, Third Day, Chris Rice, Hillsongs Praise, Steven Curtis Chapman, The Chieftains, John Denver, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger...

What you can't stand: rush-hour traffic
What you plain dislike: Jerry Springer & others of his ilk; & mindless reality-TV shows
Who you admire: ordinary people who perform extraordinary deeds when required by circumstances
What you most love to do: spend time with family and friends (both IRL friends & cyber-friends), read
Your self-confessed flaws: impatience & procrastination
What intrigues/fascinates you: all aspects of Middle-Earth and its inhabitants
What scares you: snakes, spiders, scorpions, and other such critters...
Quotation to live by: "Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world"

Additional comments: Even after 37 years of reading LotR & The Hobbit, the world of Middle-Earth is still as wondrous as it was the first time I visited. Only now, I'm not visiting...I'm going home & spending time with close family & treasured friends.

The reason you can get a pilot's license so early is because to be a fighter, you have to pretty much be under 25, or 30 anyway.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-21-2003 12:02 PM

Name (that you go by):Rebecca, Becka, Reebok

Occupation: LotR fanatic...hopefully a waitress soon!
Future Aspirations: Move to Scotland
Goal in life: To become a horse trainer and teach others the right way to train horses
Short term goals: make it to Rivendell before the release of RotK in theaters
Passion: Horses
Hobbies: Reading, working with horses, swimming, Barrow Downs.
Famous for (okay this is where you get to brag about yourself): My weird sense of humour...

Fave sport: Equestrian events
Fave store: Elf-Mart, Spencer's.
Fave music: Great Big Sea, Three Days Grace, Yakoo Boys, Moxy Fruvous

What you can't stand: People that pretend to know what their talking about.
What you plain dislike: Ignorant individuals, racists, bigots, idiots.
Who you admire: People who can put up with the aforesaid people without killing them.
What you most love to do: Go horseback riding, read, listen to music.
Your self-confessed flaws: I am really, really loud and it takes me forever to make a decision.
What intrigues/fascinates you: Middle-earth and its history.
What scares you: Unattended fires, the thought of being buried alive, tornadoes.
Quotation to live by: "Don't wait for your ship to come in...row out and meet it."

Additional comments: Middle-earth and its inhabitants are...the most fascinating things I have ever looked at. It intrigues me how many people love these stories on such a high level. Dead Ringers Unite!

Mattius 06-23-2003 08:06 AM

Well, I haven't put my profile down for a while so here goes.

Name (that you go by): Matt, Pagey.

Age: 18

Occupation: Student (tax dodger) and part time shop assistant.

Future Aspirations: Get into University of Sheffield to study History.

Goal in life: Get a book publsihed.

Short term goals: Get through summer holidays without any annoying distractions, ie too much work.

Passion: Writing

Famous for (okay this is where you get to brag about yourself): Nothing at present but hopfully I will be the first person to walk on the Sun, hey I'll do it at night so its not so hot.

Fave book: The Hobbit, because its just so damn funny and great.

Fave movies: Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Terminator, T2, Alien, Aliens, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Star Wars past and present, Spiderman, Goldmember, Predator and loads more.

Fave sport: Football, you know the proper one where you use your feet, not big shoulder pads and get called 'jocks'.

Fave store: Free Spirit where I work because I get half priced stuff.

Fave music: Incubus, Hed (PE), Rage Against The Machine, System Of A Down, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Green Day, KoRn, Hundred Reasons, Less Than Jake, Lost Prophets, Guns 'N' Roses, Puddle of Mudd, Static-X, Nonpoint, Lit, The Offspring and NOFX to name but a few.

What you can't stand: Big Brother the reality TV show. It is without a doubt the most pointless show on TV. It is made even worse by people who don't even know who George Orwell is and that his idea is used to promote such tripe.

What you plain dislike: Idiots, they are taking over the world. There is even one in the most important job on the planet.

Who you admire: War Vet's. Not the kind who cure liitle cats and dogs though.

What you most love to do: Spend time with family and girlfriend and read and post.

Your self-confessed flaws: Too laid back.

One thing I've noticed about this thread is that the vast majority of posters are in their teens or early 20's. And congrats, Earwen, on being the youngest at 11! What I want to know is, who is the OLDEST Barrowdowns member? I can tell you I've got the Saucepan Man beat for attained physical age (but not for number of operating brain cells). I am also enjoying this thread for the obscure things that pop up on it: for instance, I thought I was the only person who saw and enjoyed "Puma Man," but apparently it is a Burrahobbit favorite! . I'd do the form, but I'm out of time and I think about these things too long when I try them. I'll leave the rest to your imagination if you wish to go there!

Cheers!

Yeah, it is. For a long time I actually thought that Helka was nineteen, and I thought Aman was, like, twenty-two or twenty-three.

Then there are those nice little moments when you think someone is a guy, but turns out they're actually a girl. Very embarressing...

No, it isn't. You just have to get your parents or legal guardian to sign a slip to say you can come on. That or lie about your age, but no one would ever dream of doing that now, would they...?

Diamond18 06-26-2003 06:13 PM

I'm stalling because I have other stuff which needs doing, but I'm too lazy to do it. It's time to fill this out again.

<font color=red>Name: Diamond, or Sarah Rose.

<font color=red>Age: Still 18. My birthday is September 30th if you'd like to send me a present.

<font color=red>Occupation: Library page, pseudo-Librarian, author.

<font color=red>Future Aspirations: To be published. Buy my books, would ya? They'll be under the name Sarah L. Rose.

<font color=red>Goal in life: I still don't really get that question. It's the same thing.

<font color=red>Short term goals: To get psyched up enough to work on reviewing someone's story, then work on writing the chapter of my own story which I've been writing and erasing for the past couple days.

<font color=red>Passion: Writing.

<font color=red>Hobbies: Pulling wings off of faeries.

<font color=red>Famous for: *Snerk.*

<font color=red>Favorite book: I'd rather just say favorite authors. It's easier. Tolkien, LeGuin, Lewis (though I have a few beefs with Narnia) Dickens, J. Austen, Jan Karon, Frank Peretti and some people I know from FWW (see link). And other ones which I've forgotten.

<font color=red>Favorite movie: Indiana Jones, LotR, O Brother Where Art Thou? among others. I watch a lot of movies, so things change with my mood. I like Spielberg's movies, and Shyamalan's, and sometimes I'll watch stuff 'cause Mel Gibson or Harrison Ford is in it.

<font color=red>Favorite sport: The over-hyped, glitzy American Football. Hey, it's entertaining. Stuff actualy happens on a regular basis. *cough*

<font color=red>Favorite store: I shop very little. And when I do I just go to whatever place has what I want.

<font color=red>Favorite music: matchbox twenty, matchbox twenty, matchbox twenty! Acutally, I listen to all sorts of music: rock, classical, soundtracks, folk... and a wittle bit of country pop (just Nickel Creek). But I like rock best. Bands like Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, Evanesenence, Puddle of Mudd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Everclear, Saliva, Train, Live, U2, etc. Oh, and Santana.

<font color=red>What you can't stand: Writer's block! Argh!

<font color=red>What you plain dislike: Um... the Beasty Boys. And most forms of rap, really. Also, elitist snobs. But I'm in a languid, happy mood right now, so I won't list all my pet peeves. It would overload the server.

<font color=red>Who you admire: Lots of people. My family, some friends and internet acquaintences. Otherwise, I'm becoming apathetic towards most public figures. But I still admire J.R.R. Tolkien.

<font color=red>What you most love to do: Well, it's a toss up between writing, listening to music, chatting or emailing online, and pulling wings off of faeries. But, considering that I can do all those things at once, there you go.

<font color=red>Your self-confessed flaws: A short temper and tendency to become depressed. When I am depressed, I could overload the server with all my real or imagined flaws. But I'm happy right now. Mowing the lawn does that for my moods.

<font color=red>What intrigues/fascinates you: Human relationships. Any sort: strangers, acquantences, co-workers, customers, friends, enemies, siblings, parent/child, extended family, lovers, etc.

<font color=red>What scares you: The future, and driving in heavy traffic.

<font color=red>Quotation to live by: Let it slide. (Hey, I told you what kind of mood I'm in).

<font color=red>Additional comments: I really think we need some new questions for this thread. Maybe someone should post a new questionnaire sometime. This one's nice, but you know. I'd be interested in some new stuff to mull over.

Future Aspirations: join the FBI and enlist in the Army Reserve

Fave movie: HBO's Band of Brothers, Gods and Generals, Les Misarables (the one with Liam Neeson), Dumb and Dumber, A Beautiful Mind, The Count of Monte Cristo, FOTR, TTT, Gettysburg, both Ace Ventura movies, The Lost Battalion, Hamlet with Kenneth Brannagh, Signs, Dances with Wolves...I love movies!

especially arguing with liberalists
Ha ha! In one of the classes I'm taking this summer I've had to do that a lot. Normally I just sit back and let people say their silly ideas, but the kids in this class are really extreme (they want capitalism to die, they want hard working, successful people to give all their money to other people even if they're lazy bums who just sit around having babies and aren't even trying to get a job, they oppose anything having to do with standards or morals, and they preach tolerance all the time yet they are completely intolerant of people who don't share their views).

I can't let behavior like that slide, so I've been making them look really silly in our in class debates. You know you're arguing well when they always respond like this "Well... ummm... I can kind of see... well, I don't know... I think I still disagree because... ummm".

Quote:

Do the weird girls in Wisconsin love sports though? Another big reason we broke up was because she couldn't name a baseball team. Well, I'm oversimplifying, but her complete lack of sports knowledge was a major annoyance.

Well Diamond, you should try and come to our little Mid-West meeting in Indianapolis. I'm going to have all of Everclear's music along with me. Then you'll hear what you're missing.

thats horrible! hippie's with communist idea's ...I think I'd get high blood pressure in that kind of class. I bet their parents were "flower children." That would explain their low morals and dislike of capitolism. They should get out of the '60's...

Earendil Halfelven are you still in school right now, or are you on summer vacation? (Do you go to all year school?). I am too going to be a senior (or maybe I could already consider myself a senior but it still just does not sound right calling myself that) the class of 2004 rocks!!!

*Varda* 06-29-2003 04:58 AM

It's been so long since I did this, I just decided I'd do it again.

Name:Varda…oh, my REAL name? Lindsay
Age:16, 17 in November
Occupation:A penniless high school student in her last year, job searching.
Future Aspirations:To go to university and do a degree in something I enjoy (hopefully, I’ll work that out before the summer ends, when I have to apply)
Goal in Life:Is there much of a difference? Uh…to be happy in whatever I do
Short Term Goals:Do well in my highers, find a job, hopefully do well in advanced higher English.
Passion:All things LotR, reading, writing, getting to know people
Hobbies:Same as above, though I like singing too, although I’m not great at it.
Famous for:I’m totally unfamous.
Favourite Book: : LotR, the Silm, His Dark Materials trilogy, Harry Potter, Tess of the D’urbervilles, The Chronicles of Narnia.
Favourite Movie:Both LotR movies, although I still have issues with #2, Shrek, Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet.
Favourite Sport:Sport? Exercise? Don’t do much of that…my favourite is probably anything that won’t involve a trip to the hospital.
Favourite Store:: H&M…it sells so many clothes…heaven
Favourite Music:I love the LotR soundtracks, I like Pink, Evanescence, Destiny’s Child, TLC, Amy Studt. I like a lot of things at the moment, it’s too long a list.
What you can't stand:Selfish people, ignorance, bullies, war.
What you plain dislike:Spiders, although I’m less afraid of them now. Oh, and I dislike Blazin Squad, Avril Lavigne and many other music out there.
Who you admire:: People who achieve their aims through peaceful means, my friends and family.
What you most love to do:Read
Your self confessed flaws:: I can be quite short tempered sometimes, not as tactful as I could be. I also tend to bottle things up far too much.
What scares you:Death and what comes after
Quotation to live by:An eye for an eye and the whole world will be blind.
Additional Comments:Is this the part where I'm supposed to make a witty comment? If so...I'm uninspired, so I'll just say that I love the Barrowdowns *tear* and happy posting!

Orual 06-29-2003 01:07 PM

Name (that you go by): You can stick with calling me Orual.

Age: Older, younger, or the same age as you.

Occupation: Unemployed student, though I have been paid for my writing once. (Okay, it was a contest that I placed in, but I can colour the truth a little bit...)

Future Aspirations: To be a successful writer, shopkeep, and to "live so that when [I] come to die, even the undertaker will be sorry." (Mark Twain)

Goal in life: Leave it a little better than I found it.

Short term goals: Learn all of the songs from "Once More, With Feeling" on the piano.

Passion: Writing. Then acting and music.

Hobbies: Writing. Then acting and music. (Plus the Barrow-Downs!)

Famous for (okay this is where you get to brag about yourself): My cartwheels, my rapid speech, and (among my circle of friends) my writing.

Fave book: The Lord of the Rings, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, the Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

Fave movie: I'm not much of a movie person...the LotR movies, Cool Runnings, the Sixth Sense, What About Bob?, and I'm sure that if I saw the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie I'd love it. I love the series. Would the musical episode count? It was an hour long...

Fave sport: I guess surfing the Internet doesn't count...lol, basketball and swimming.

Fave store: Barnes & Noble, Hot Topic (don't even bother calling me a poser, I've learned to tune it out.)

Fave music: Alt. rock (or radio rock), such as Everclear, matchbox twenty, Good Charlotte, Live, Lit, blink-182, etc.

What you can't stand: Intolerance. I know it sounds clichéd, but it really upsets me.

What you plain dislike: Well, intolerance, of course, but also bad grammar and spelling (call me picky).

Who you admire: Anyone who makes it through with a smile on their face. And James Marsters. (Five points to anybody who knows who that is.)

What you most love to do: Read, write, act, play music, listen to music, hang out with my friends.

Your self-confessed flaws: Me? Flaws? (Egotism! Not to mention uncontrolled anger, irritability, pessimism, and occasionally, mild despair.)

What intrigues/fascinates you: Acrobats. Especially Cirque du Soleil. Humans aren't supposed to move like that.

What scares you: Where should I start? The declining state of the environment, corrupted politics, corrupted religious leaders, lack of civility, respect, and honor among people, and shall I continue?

Quotation to live by: The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

Gorwingel 06-29-2003 05:54 PM

You have exquisite musical tastes, O.

And Phanty ol' boy, that's awful tempting. But I could just rustle up a few minutes time at work and put in an Inter Library Loan request (ILL... haha...) Maybe I will-ill-ill... (Is there an echo today?) And yes, Wisconsin is known as a sports loving state—what country have you been living in??
