We have a winner

Kettle of Fish it is.

Eomer of the Rohirrim 02-28-2006 09:46 AM

So bloody obvious when you see it...

I think you two just made up that user. I've never heard of such a name. :p

JennyHallu 02-28-2006 09:51 AM

GAH! Exactly Eomer...so bloody obvious...

And the reason neither of us have heard of Kettle of Fish is that he hasn't been here since before the Barrow-Downs used a vBulletin Board.

Only old fogeys like Squatter have ever heard of him... ;)

EDIT: Oh wait, you're an old fogey too... :D :p

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 02-28-2006 09:53 AM

No we didn't.

The thread's gone now, but Underhill once told Belin that every member apart from the two of them was invented by him. You know who to blame now.

JennyHallu 02-28-2006 09:57 AM

Old fogeyness

And neither of those two names are particularly active, hmm?

That was a good riddle, I enjoyed it!

Eomer of the Rohirrim 02-28-2006 10:10 AM

Last activity 1970? A signature which I cannot fathom without a dictionary (Squatter hallmark)? I sense trickery! ;)

Seriously though, that was one of the more enjoyable questions on this thread. Most of the time someone gets the answer within a few hours.

Now, is that "him" Underhill or Kettle It likely explains Kettle's role in Belin's game, now, doesn't it? Explains the game, too. ;)

A bit of Kettle memberabilia:

I quite like the Loathsome Black Rider bit. The Durtinco doesn't sound like a flowing elvish name.

Clearly a case of the kettle calling the Rider black.

It would appear that it is also highly unlikely that any remember it. :p

Mithalwen 02-28-2006 12:16 PM

This is a hard act to follow and is bound to be a disappointment.... heigh ho....

Lissom serpent initially after ash

Hilde Bracegirdle 02-28-2006 03:02 PM

I don't suppose you'd believe I had the old and fishy answer scribbed at my desk at home over the weekend, and promptly forget ere Monday rolled in? Thought not....

Ah well, on to more adventures with the member's list! Serpent...Hmmm.

Gil-Galad 02-28-2006 05:38 PM

bah... i want to say Sharku and Mithadan, cause i remember one of them had a "Smiling is for hipocrites" Avvie with a snake in it...

Lhunardawen 03-01-2006 05:46 AM

Say this isn't cryptic....say this isn't cryptic...say this isn't cryptic...

Mithalwen 03-01-2006 06:39 AM

Well I could if that would make you happy.... but it would be a big, fat lie....

Gil this has nothing to do with Avvies it is just a (I hope) fairly straight forward cryptic clue which will let you construct the Downers name.

Mithalwen 03-04-2006 04:30 AM

Time for a clue? If you work out what "ash" is the rest should be easy. Americans may be at a disadvantage and anyone who knows why menzies is pronounced mingies may have an advantage......

I don't feel like I have an advantage, but with ash you might be talking about the Anglo-Saxon rune then? I think it's the ae, but I'm not sure.

Knows why? Well, that's something to do with the archaic Scots letter yogh, but how that links to anything I have nary a clue...

Mithalwen 03-04-2006 05:21 AM

Oh Anguirel... some of us are rather fond of Archaic letters.......

Anguirel 03-04-2006 05:36 AM

I like digamma myself.

Mithalwen 03-04-2006 05:48 AM

Maths?

I think I have told you enough to get you started.... :D

Anguirel 03-04-2006 06:39 AM

Nah, not Maths, Greek...

Digamma is the reason lots of really really ancient Minoan Greek words end in inthos. I forget exactly how or why. It's pronounced something like a w.

Now I'm crawling back into the linguistic waste whence I came. But I hope my yogh contribution is of some help to a sharper aftercomer...

Morsul the Dark 03-04-2006 09:56 AM

aelithes

Mithalwen 03-05-2006 11:50 AM

A winner

You are right though the rest of the clue was intended differently.

æ is indeed called ash and is just the most beautiful letter to my mind..like a little flower.

So we have ae

Lissom means much the same as lithe

and the initial letter of serpent is s

aelithes indeed.

Your go Morsul.

Oh Cailin - I am so sorry - I was on a library computer yesterday and somehow I didn't see your response else I would have acknowledged it ....... So while I guess Morsul has the turn you get a lot of Kudos

Morsul the Dark 03-06-2006 08:26 AM

Anguirel 03-15-2006 11:50 AM

Fateful seamstress, do you venture
Still upon ideal waters?

Glirdan 03-15-2006 01:42 PM

I'm going to guess at Spawn.

Anguirel 03-15-2006 01:51 PM

No...a member with a lower profile...

Mithalwen 03-15-2006 02:01 PM
