Could you possibly give us a hint?

Anne S 10-23-2003 05:58 AM

A dwarf could tell you something about this character.

This character was long dead when Bilbo found the Ring.

The type of this character was immortalized in a poem by a famous American writer.

Nope NightKnight, not Istar.

NightKnight 10-24-2003 01:25 PM

Ah, there. Found it:

Elu?

Anne S 10-25-2003 04:37 AM

NightKnight, you certainly deserve some bonus points.

But Elu is not the right answer.

Nóm? It was a name given to Finrod Felagund by Beor, meaning Wisdom...

Anne S 10-25-2003 06:24 AM

No, not Nom.

Another clue: this character is not as obscure as the names you are coming up with. (Goodness knows I wouldn't come up with names like that as I am not that familiar with the long histories). His name appears in "The Hobbit," although he is dead by then.

Anyone care to venture a guess?

Otherwise I'll just give the answer and someone else can have a go.

The Saucepan Man 11-04-2003 06:27 PM

Aha! I think that I have finally found it!

Carc, father of Roac the Raven.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-05-2003 01:06 AM

Commendable work, Saucepan, by jove!

Anne S 11-05-2003 05:00 AM

Well done Saucepan Man!!

I was beginning to wonder if Carc was a figure of my imagination.

Over to you...

The Saucepan Man 11-05-2003 07:07 PM

Thank you Anne. It took some finding.

OK, a relatively straightforward one now, in that there is only one word in words to find.

Mountain climbing is not a pursuit which should be undertaken lightly. Much preparation is required. Frequently, those seeking their thrills on hazardous mountains take the wrong kind of stuff, or go ill-prepared, and more often than not they regret it.

Forgoil, meaning 'strawheads,' a (derogatory?) name for the Rohirrim.

The Saucepan Man 11-06-2003 04:00 PM

There we are, nice and straightforward.

Well done, Nuranar, a perfect answer. The thread is yours.

Anne S 11-20-2003 05:30 AM

OK, time has elapsed so I'll have another go. There is one word to be found.

Undercover police activity has become a standard feature of the contemporary political terrain. Disclosures in recent years indicate that environmentalist, anti-nuclear and animal rights groups are likely to be targeted for surreptitious investigation. This can take many forms, from an inconspicuous stranger who turns up to help at a demonstration, to a trained "deep cover" operative who may spend many years working within an organization.

Telchar 11-20-2003 08:04 AM

Indis? Arandan?

The Laurenendorian 11-20-2003 08:51 AM

Roper? Anor?

Anne S 11-21-2003 04:55 AM

Roper is the correct answer - well done Laurenendorian. Your turn now.

The Laurenendorian 11-21-2003 09:03 AM

If you wish to follow the tradition of Tolkien's earlier writings and create a spell which makes use of objects, to find relevant words in irrelevant background waffle, you should do the following: first, take a dragon tooth and infuse it in a granite basin of ram's blood for at least a week. Next, add three drops of water collected at dawn on the Elves' New Year (yestarë), pass a raven's feather over the thing once (from the right unto the left), and with all the ebuliance that you can muster, toss cat hair into a fire that has been burning for three days, has never burned anything but the bark of birch trees. If this is all done, the correct words should appear in your mind's eye, as if by magic, so to speak.

Mad Baggins 11-22-2003 06:02 PM

I found Scatha...

The Laurenendorian 11-22-2003 07:14 PM

Good find.

There's another word in there.

LePetitChoux 02-21-2004 01:47 PM

Stagnant? Stagnant?

And it was doing so well...

A week has, in fact gone by, so I'd guess that it's anyone's turn.

:)

Samwise 02-21-2004 06:38 PM

Arrgh. I always liked this game; 'fraid I can't see anything in that, though. :(

NightKnight 02-21-2004 06:38 PM

A week? Rather three months...:p

Samwise 02-21-2004 07:06 PM

Hope it's okay if I start it up again...:)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Every day it was the same thing. To and fro, to and fro, do this, do that.

" I am tired of this!"

She lobbed her water bucket and list of chores aside. "I'm going to work for someone besides the Sackville-Bagginses! "
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Only 3 words really meant to be found in that. Should be easy.

Samwise 02-21-2004 07:09 PM

PS: If it's not okay, somebody who should be going please go. Sorry, would have edited my message to add this, but every time I try, I'm told I don't have permission.

The Saucepan Man 02-21-2004 09:38 PM

Glad to see this one back again

Of course it's OK Samwise. :) And I hope you don't mind if I have at it. ;)

Thank you, Mr. Saucy, sir, and you would be correct on all three counts. ;)

The Saucepan Man 02-22-2004 07:16 PM

A nice easy one

Dear Wendy

Having a great time on holiday. The sun is shining. We have spent a lot of time in the swimming pool. We took a boat ride round the coast yesterday and saw a puffin. We also went fishing and I caught a mackrel. We plan on cooking it for dinner tonight.

Today we had lunch in the café. An oriental gentleman served us. I tried the shark’s fin (*arf*) in white wine. Tomorrow I may try the shark’s fin in black bean sauce. All they seem to have on the menu is shark’s fin.

Golfing is on the agenda for tomorrow. Then, after that, we’ll see how we feel.

Ron dearly misses you.

By for now.

Nine to find. :)

The Saucepan Man 02-22-2004 08:12 PM

Spot on, NightKnight. Please continue. :)

NightKnight 02-22-2004 08:38 PM

I will do that tomorrow. It's 3:30 AM here, and I'm too tired to make something good up. :p

The Perky Ent 04-08-2004 03:44 PM

Guess not

Guess you didn't make one up NK, so my turn!

If you like shopping, go to a mall. They have lots of goods and cloths and toys and junk. But if you want food, don't go to a mall. Unless it's something like subway, where you can get something to eat!But i'm talking about food to stick in your fridge! One store that i particularry like is Sav-a-Lot! Ho! If you haven't been, you have to try their fruit! It's to die for! Also, try going to it's rival, Sav-a-center, where prices are really cheap. The food quality is equal and they have a ten item or less line!

Well, have fun!

Samwise 04-08-2004 03:49 PM

? ? ?

Eh...NO clue....?

Dom ?

The Perky Ent 04-08-2004 03:52 PM

Um...no! I see a Don, but no Dom! PS, when you answer, please quote so i know what you're saying!

Samwise 04-08-2004 03:55 PM

Ugh...

Sorry, got this mixed up with another thread. ;p
Are are the words spelled correctly, or phonetically?

The Perky Ent 04-08-2004 04:19 PM

it's correct, or at least the area where the word is is correct! ;) Having a little trouble are we?

Samwise 04-08-2004 04:36 PM

:(

Well, I've never been good at this game, truthfully, and I don't see anything remotely LOTR related in that paragraph.

The Perky Ent 04-08-2004 06:56 PM

oh Really?

That's funny, because i see something very LOTR related. Need a hint?
