I live in Middle Earth

I'm sure I'm not the only one who tends to superimpose Middle Earth on his/her surroundings...

NYC = Mordor + Gondor.

Some very Barrow-Downs like structures can be found in a park in Buffalo, except instead of wights, they contain garbage.

Ithaca, I think, makes a nice Rivendell, and the general central finger lakes region is the Shire. The Misty Mountains & Fangorn would both be Adirondack-ish...
and the Gray Havens were temporarily located in Rochester (while the fast ferry lasted) - which, I suppose, makes Canada the Undying Lands.

EDIT - Why, oh why, do I always have to be the first to post on a new page? It's a curse, I tell you!

Amanaduial the archer 11-20-2006 01:12 PM

I've added Cuthalion, Maika - underneath your name, of course ;)

Also added Naria who PMed me today, in O Canada, O Canada...

Rune Son of Bjarne 11-20-2006 01:19 PM

Telchar is Danish too. . .

With so few Danish members we need to count everybody. ;)

Ooh, how did I miss this? It's so true.

I usually sneer a little at t-shirts with overplayed logos, but I'll never get sick of 'Ithaca is Gorges,' nor will I become bored with places like Buttermilk Falls and that fantastic bridge over the gorge alongside the Cornell art museum. *melt*

Ithaca is one of the few places in Upstate that I actively like. Watkins Glen is similar in geographical spirit. I absolutely love driving along and seeing unexpected tall waterfalls coming over the edge of cliff faces. Pretty, pretty.

Rikae 11-20-2006 03:21 PM

My official location, minus fantasy:

Rikae, New York, USA
;)

Amanaduial the archer 11-21-2006 02:27 PM

There: minus fantasy, you're added, Rikae :)

Elmo 01-28-2007 01:29 PM

The Might 01-28-2007 02:11 PM

Elmo 01-28-2007 02:12 PM

...apart from it being grey and cold I suppose, I've always wanted to visit Germany good beer there i suppose?

The Might 01-28-2007 02:16 PM

yes, there is...
I live in the north-west so we have a pretty well developed wine culture here as well, but further south you've got much much more beer
Guess Scotland isn't so bad either. I remember visiting Glenfiddich, that was nice

Legate of Amon Lanc 01-28-2007 02:32 PM

Well, if you like good beer, I'd direct you right to my homeland, which is Czech republic, city Prague... it's not much far from Germany, you can visit both countries at once, if you happen to go our direction ;)

Elmo 01-28-2007 02:34 PM

I'll try and do that one day, Cheers!

The Might 01-28-2007 02:40 PM

You live in Prague?
I love that city!
I was there twice or so, it's awesome, really medieval, but a lot of cool modern stuff
*dreams about going to Prague again*

Legate of Amon Lanc 01-28-2007 03:36 PM

Yes, I consider Prague a nice city (even though I live here all my life :D ) Okay, it starts to be a little off-topic, since we were meant just to introduce ourselves here... so, just... if any of you really were longing to see Prague... (*searches for a thread where the Downers plan their meetings, and prepares for PMing*)

Elmo 01-28-2007 05:08 PM

I am intrdoucing myself, I like beer, I want to go to Germany and Prague to drink beer, so now you know :D

Holy crap, Fea, did you grow up with me?! :p

Yeah, my town's so unbelievably small, it's ridiculous. Then again, it's Nebraska, so it's to be expected. And before someone asks me:

A: Yes, you FoaT, we have electricity.
B: No, I've never been cowtipping, nor do I think it would be fun.
C: Yes, I went to a "real" school.
D: Oh, and yes, we have running water. Well, most of the time, but that's only at college and only because they're too lazy to fix anything.

HerenIstarion 02-16-2008 10:46 AM

Live and learn, that'd be the motto...

I have question E for you. It stands as: what in the name of Odin is cowtipping?

I'm not making fun of you, honest, so pardon my ignorance if it's something very obvious

Rikae 02-16-2008 11:35 AM

I believe it involves overturning somnolent cattle for amusement.

That would require a lot of physical force I imagine, and would strain one's back for sure too. I guess I'd settle for some quiter hobbitish type of sports (throwing things, like) if ever in the country

Finduilas 02-16-2008 12:10 PM

Cowtipping is awesome! :D

.... Well, I've never really done it, as it sounds stupid, and I don't think my neighbors would like it, and I don't have any cows at present, so.... no cowtipping for me! It also is probably rather dangerous...

But yes, we have had people ask us if we've been cowtipping.

And I live precisely where my location says I live, so I see no reason to further explain. :D

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 02-16-2008 01:38 PM

Muskego, Wisconsin.

Plenty of cows around here, but it's been ages since anyone tried cowtipping in this area. That's more of a "rural college town with bored fraternity members" kind of thing. :D

My brother and I actually caught some kids tippin' our cattle last night on our ranch. You weren't by any chance one of the kids we caught were you?;)

I actually have an uncle who lives up there! I always pictured with a name like yours that you lived in the Ukraine.

Well, that's not terribly far off. My family is largely of Polish/Russian/Ukrainian heritage. My screen name here looks a lot like some of my relatives' surnames. When people ask things like, "what's your mother's maiden name?" you say it and start spelling before they even ask. And they still look at you like you just sprouted mushrooms in your nostrils. :D

Prexactly. And I'm sure if you tried it, you would probably understand how bored (or drunk, as Ibrin suggested hehe) you would have to be to gain amusement from that.

I'm actually from a small college town with bored fraternity boys. Fortunately, they don't go to my even smaller hometown to amuse themselves. That could be quite interesting.

Sidenote. Phantom, I didn't know you were from Omaha? Fascinating. I went up to Papillion a few months ago for a concert, and my step-brother goes to college up there, but that's not worth more than a mention. Are you too cursing the weather, or are you far enough from the Lincon/Crete area that you've escaped the nastiness?

You actually caught someone cowtipping? It wasn't me, I would be more secretive and carefull. :)

Eomer of the Rohirrim 02-16-2008 05:50 PM

Michty, er, The Might. You've been to Aberdeen? And Glenfiddich? My mother worked there when she was a teenager! You probably walked past me in the street once, not noticing me because you were too busy staring in awe at the majestic city. :D

The Might 02-17-2008 05:44 AM

Could be...
But why on the streets?

Nerwen 02-17-2008 06:22 AM

Where else would you have seen him, Might?

–I am from Victoria, Australia.

Yep, two nights ago on our ranch. We saw some of the neighbors kids were doing it while my brother and I were making the night rounds.

-I'm from Boerne Texas, and proud of it!:D

Gwathagor 03-27-2008 08:29 PM

Gwathagor is from Newberg, Oregon. He frequently revels in the fact that his state is better than all others and laughs at people who disagree because they are invariably the people who have never been to Oregon for any serious length of time.

Woah...dude...you're really, super claiming a lot. I personally vouch that my own state is the best. And if I didn't live here, I'd live in Kentucky. Why on earth do you claim that Oregon is the best state?

piosenniel 03-27-2008 08:58 PM

Oregon is the best state.....

I live there.

:p
