Grima was in awe of the massive army
A stupid little question, but necessary for me to understand this completely: what does the word "awe" mean?

Rimbaud 07-30-2004 07:37 AM

Dear Mariska

Main Entry: awe

Pronunciation: 'o

Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse agi; akin to Old English ege awe, Greek achos pain

1 : an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime <stood in awe of the king> <regard nature's wonders with awe>

2 archaic a : DREAD, TERROR b : the power to inspire dread

That's definitely it, then. He's amazed, shocked, and somewhat fearful at the sheer size of the army and at what he has done. Awe describes it perfectly.
