Ok, this one is tough! I'd be glad to give a clue if needed.

Others dwelt here before hobbits were; and others will dwell here again when hobbits are no more. The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves, but you cannot forever fence it out.

Bombadil 05-24-2004 07:58 PM

haha, wow. Even as I was typing that it was tough i still figured Luthien would get it. Awesome job! So prompt also! You're up :D

luthien-elvenprincess 05-25-2004 03:13 AM

hehehe, I do seem to have a knack for this type of puzzle. ;)
Here is, I hope, an easy one...I am leaving on a 7 day trip tomorrow and am not sure if I can get internet access without paying alot for it!

'PH P KT PA PF EGM HKMIA,' FAPD BPIBG. 'PA PF TPVL, P ALII EGM. TE GSN. TE CNLUPGMF. ELF, TE CNLUPGMF.

(owww, I wasn't even trying to make a word with this, but 'elf' came out! Somehow, I find things like that to be cool  )

Bombadil 06-02-2004 05:52 PM

well, i gave time duiring your leave to see if anyone would join this game besides me, and no- but that's fine! I'll just have to give the answer! *Btw, there were some discrepancies, like in the "said Bilbo" part, you had some letters representing themselves. Just letting you know! Here it is:

'If I am it is your fault,' said Bilbo. 'It is mine, I tell you. My own. My precious. Yes, my precious.'

luthien-elvenprincess 06-02-2004 09:28 PM

Ah, so I did...I was in a hurry in making it...with packing and all. Sorry  You are correct with the answer.
This is a great game, I don't understand why others don't get involved
Your turn.

Bombadil 06-29-2004 02:14 PM

Let's get this rolling again!

Sorry! I forgot all about this game - although I think the only person I'm apologizing to is Luthien, lol. Here's a new one! It's been awhile...

luthien-elvenprincess 06-29-2004 07:48 PM

Hi Bombadil :) , I figured it out...but I will wait a few days to see if someone else may, perhaps, answer. :)

Bombadil 06-29-2004 07:49 PM

Ha! I knew you'd get it! Smart move by the way, maybe we should start doing that everytime, because it also takes awhile to make one of those up! :)

Firefoot 06-29-2004 07:53 PM

If you don't mind my asking, I have never for the life of me been able to get these things. How do you go about solving them?

Bombadil 06-29-2004 08:01 PM

Some good tips are looking for certain repetitions of common words.

Par example:

UHG UGG WQSAX UHG OPZZ.

In most cases the UGH would represent "The" or "And." A lot of times it's process of elimination. In this case it represents the. So far you'd have:

The tee WQSAX The OPZZ.

If somewhere else in the clause you see a single letter it has to be an I or an A in almost all cases. These are some strategies, but basically you have to do them and practice them. Usually when someone starts out it's good to have one or two hints. So if you'd like one just ask ;)

By the way, my little example cryptogram says, "The tee holds the ball." :D

Firefoot 06-29-2004 08:03 PM

okay, that should help. Thanks for the tips!

Firefoot 06-29-2004 08:21 PM

Now I can feel proud of myself for figuring it out :)

Bombadil 06-29-2004 09:03 PM

Correct! Luthien we have another player! ;)

luthien-elvenprincess 06-30-2004 09:19 AM

Great job Firefoot. Way to go! It didn't take you long to catch on! :)
Good tips, Bombadil. Also, it helps to realize that certain letters, such as 'E', 'S', 'T', etc, are used alot in the language. So look for letters that are used alot in the crypto and see if some of those fit in. Trial and error work. Look for double letters in words too, these are usually 'LL' or 'EE" or something like that. The easiest cryptos to figure out are ones that have a single letter in the puzzle, because this has to be an 'A' or 'I'.

Can't wait for the next one! :D

I believe it is...

Perfect! Except where you wrote "muse" it is "must." No biggie though, thanks for your participation, this game is starting to get bigger! You're up!

Mirkgirl 07-06-2004 02:13 PM

Well e is just 2 keys away from t.... I have to learn to type one of these days lol

It's a neat game :D

Might be a bit too difficult... but it does have a good deal of short words too... and the name of a certain elven lord in it... consider it a hint (:

Wizards ought to know better: They do know better. There is no curse in elvish, entish, or the tongues of men bad enough for such treachery. Down with Saruman!

luthien-elvenprincess 07-14-2004 03:57 PM

Good job, Bombadil. Your turn!
