I have been reading the Sil again, and I found the death of a character similar to Arwen's (since it was honored in this thread) on a smaller scale.

Quote:

Rian, daughter of Belegund, was the wife of Huor, son of Galdor, and she was wedded to him two months before he went with Hurin his brother to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. When no tidings came of her lord she fled into the wild; but she was aided by the Grey-elves of Mithrim, and when her som Tuor was born they fostered him. Then Rian departed from Hithlum, and going to the Haudh-en-Ndengin she laid herself down upon it and died.

I think the best death was the Witch-Kings, I mean getting a sword plunged right into your face!
He ain't pretty no more!

Fingolfin's death was truly heroic, as was Fingon's. But I must add to this list of interesting deaths another elf, Maedhros. After finally reclaiming a Silmaril, he took it in his hand and it burned him, showing that he was impure of heart. In anguish he cast himself into a fiery chasm.

Poor Maedros! :( All that work and only to end in suicide... perhaps a little group therapy could have helped a bit...

Personally, I've always liked Fëanor's death. I know I want my body to turn to ash when I die! ;) Also, though it technically hasn't happened yet, I like the true death of Morgoth that Mandos foretells in The Lost Road and Other Writings:
Quote:

In that day Tulkas shall strive with Morgoth, and on his right hand shall be Fionwë, and on his left Túrin Turambar, son of Húrin, coming from the halls of Mandos; and the black sword of Túrin shall deal unto Morgoth his death and final end; and so shall the children of Húrin and all Men be avenged.
Elianna, you sound like the kind of person who would enjoy the SCA. :)

I have to say the battle between Morgoth and Fingolfin moved me the most. along with feanor. Also there was in one of "thelost tales" (I think) a more in depth story of the downfall of Gondolin. The part when a group of elves are escaping along a narrow path and are confronted by a Balrog and an elf i think his name was Glorfindel challenged and defeated him thus losing his life in the process. If anyone knows what book and the name of the elf I would like to know.

Turgon: Yes, that's Glorfindel, and a very valiant death indeed.

Yes, turgon, it was Glorfindel the valiant Blarog-slayer. The book was The Book of Lost Tales vol 2 "The Fall of Gondolin."

thank you.. I had to throw away all my old copies. And now I'm getting anxiety attacks until I can "resupply" :D

Finally! A thread where I can rant on glorious violent deaths!!! Muahaha!!!

Fingon's death is the most gory, most vivid one. Tolkien literally wrote that sparks flew when Gothmog cleaved through the elf king's helm. If elven armor was sturdy, imagine the strength of Gothmog and the impact on Fingon's skull, totally smashed beyond shape I say.

Also what about the part when the balrogs started to mutilate the body of the king, turning it into mince meat? Armor flattened beyond repair, bones pulverized and all organs crushed and ruptured. Brilliant! Bits and pieces of elf king everywhere!

Speaking of Arathon who died by a wound to the eye, in Luo Guan Zhong's Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a general of the Kingdom of Wei by the name of Xiahou Dun also recieved an arrow to the left eye. He pulled out the offending barb and with it, tore out the ruptured eyeball from the socket. Seeing what he had done, the burly general flew into a hideous rage and exclaimed,

"Essence of my father, blood of my mother! I cannot throw this away."

He then popped his eyeball into his mouth, chewed and swallowed it. Marvellous!

Um, not quite a death, and not quite Tolkien related about Xiahou Dun, Saurreg.

Gurthang 11-08-2004 10:53 AM

Yeah, that's nice. Being ripped to shredds by fiery demons.

But anyway, I really liked Turin's death. After defeating Glaurung, he went to retrieve me(Gurthang) and was scorched by the dragons blood. Then the dragon gazed upon him and they both died. That was cool.

Alright...

Think of it as a little side note if you will.
