This kind of good ale I'll raise to his health as soon as the opportunity presents itself

Diamond18 10-13-2007 11:29 AM

Congratulations to all three of you. :D

HerenIstarion 10-13-2007 11:41 AM

By the way...

Either I'm too tired, or I'm missing it for the lack of good sight, though I looked through the thread twice - have the name given been named (apart from joking up there about combining davem and lalwende)? :Merisu:

Farael 10-13-2007 02:54 PM

Congratulations Lal and Davem! =) as we'd say in my family "que cosha golda!" ("cosa gorda" which is literally translated to "chubby thing" but that is NOT the meaning... it means rather a cute lil' one :) )

No, it hasn't. We're still thinking...... We do have one in mind, & I'll let you know when we've finally decided.....

a new little baby
such a heavenly sight
he'll steal your heart by day
and your sleep at night*

CONGRATULATIONS!!

I am so happy for you both (Wow, I thought my boy of 9lbs2oz was big!). He is so cute and smells good, too. Yes, I can smell through the computer. Just so excited for you both. It is an amazing feeling when a tiny little person has been on this earth not so very long but then you can't imagine them not being a part of your life.

Maybe not too quickly but for some of us we never learn. Mr. Holby and I are trying for our 5th. Take note, Alatar, we are going to break the tie :p ;).

I'm of the opinion that, when it comes to babies, the two are synonymous anyway. :D He's adorable!
Lal & Dave, though I congratulated you elsewhere, why not here as well? Can't have too much celebration! Make the most of every minute - little ones grow up far too quickly.

Maikadilwen 10-15-2007 03:02 PM

A slightly belated congratulations to both of you, he is a cutie! Can't say how it pleases me to see the "dating-success" of the Downs resulting in a next generation (having been happily married to a downer for 3 years now, myself) :D

Durelin 10-15-2007 05:43 PM

Congratulations!! That's so exciting, and I'm so happy for you both! He's gorgeous!

Folwren 10-15-2007 07:23 PM

Congratulations!

Something funny - I just met a one month old just barely the same weight as this newcomer when he was first born!

Hope all is going well with you, Lal, and your recovery. My Mom had three Ceasarians. No fun.

Blessings!

Lalwendë 10-16-2007 08:41 AM

I'm back.

Well I have a thousand and one things to do and am verrry tired, but my first task shall be to come on here. We came home yesterday evening. Davem said he'd do the through the night thing last night and is now in a sate of severe shock - I'd already done four nights of this in the hospital so I was quite happy to give him a turn but the little tyke decided to give him the run around and not induct him in lightly. Meh. ;)

It's quite funny how quickly you fall into casual talk of sore bums and the colour of poop. Saying "What has it got in it's pocketses?" adds amusement to the task... I'm quite taken with the concept of modern medicine as the hospital team did a great job and despite still walking around at little old lady pace and whining when I climb the stairs as I can feel the stitches pulling, I was up and on my feet within 12 hours of the event. There's nothing to be scared of really, painkillers are excellent these days and then afterwards nature shows you what to do. ;)

Now I need to look up what Middle-earth events took place on his birthday - off the top of me head, I think this was when Frodo was fleeing to Rivendell wasn't it?

Hilde Bracegirdle 10-16-2007 10:15 AM

Apparently, Glorfindel left Rivendell on the 9th. That would be pretty close. :)

HerenIstarion 10-16-2007 10:32 AM

On 11th Glorfindel drove the Riders off the Bridge of Mitheithel :)

Just bear in mind that it is a topic of somewhat limited interest to anyone who a, hasn't got a strong genetic stake in the pooh producer or , b, doesn't have one of their own to swap anecdotes about. I really didn't need as much information as I got about my god-son's potty training believe me :p Don't get me wrong, I like children... I am just better with them when they have developed a sense of responsibility at both ends

Guinevere 10-16-2007 01:33 PM

(Belated) congratulations from me too, for the lovely little boy!

May the stars shine on his path through life!

(And I wish you a speedy recovery, Lal, and not too many disturbed nights... )

The Might 10-16-2007 02:05 PM

Seems you could call him Glorfindel...if he happens to have blonde hair it actually is a must.

Eruanna 10-18-2007 04:46 PM

Hearty congratulations, Lal and davem. He's gorgeous!

The Saucepan Man 10-19-2007 12:52 PM

<- Here's a beer to wet the baby's head ...

Haven't been around much lately - family, work, other interests etc - so I have only just seen this.

Many congratulations to both - all three - of you. I am really happy for you. :) I remember when our first was born - nearly 10 years ago now - and what a wonderful moment it was. As for those who tell you to make the most of every moment, well they've got it just about right. The years just seem to whizz by.

I am impressed that you sound so calm, Lal, after what you have been through. My recollection of the first few weeks is utter panic, although that was largely because Mrs S had some complications (severe back pain from a botched volley of epidurals), and I had to learn the basics of babycare pdq. Still, it sounds like you are coping well, and I'm glad that you have got davem doing his fair share. :D

And bear in mind that things are always much easier second time round. ;)

All the best.

~Sauce~

Poor Mrs Sauce.... few phrases not concerning actual loss of life have filled me with more horror than those five words ...

Other interests? Don't tell me you have seen the light and have taken up watching rugby? :p

Lalwendë 10-20-2007 03:45 PM

I was told right away that an epidural was the sensible choice as it was going to hurt more than normal otherwise so I took it gladly - I was scared but the brisk and sarcastic manner of the anaesthetist made me laugh and thankfully she did a good job. The other anaesthetist who took over in the evening was similar and let me hang onto her hand and talk mind-diverting drivel to her all through the op. I asked one if she had a thing about needles considering her specialism and the other I accused of being a sadist. ;)

I'm calm because I have to be, but I have had some screaming fits over the inability to get the steriliser into the microwave and thinking I'd given the tyke nappy rash (it was his antibiotics which did this) :(

And davem has taken to it all like a duck to water. ;)

Mithalwen 10-22-2007 11:58 AM

I know that I would not want to be even

vaguely conscious during major surgery and if the pain was going to be bad enough to make having a ruddy great needle shoved in my spine seem like a good option, I'd rather be knocked out and woken when it was all over .....

Well you know that whatever happens, something has got to come out in some way, and if there is the option of doing this relatively painlessly then you snatch it up. I kept thinking that if Frodo had been offered a Tardis to take him to the Cracks of Doom then he'd have been mad not to take it ;)

It's all frightening at the time, but afterwards you really do put it out of your mind, possibly as you are soooo tired... :(

I did wonder what agonies poor Miriel went through having Feanor though, to make her react like that? Wonder how heavy he was? ;)

Oh I fully admit I am a wimp ...and too many friends have told me more than you should tell someone who hasn't gone through it... and size isn't everything :p - my godson was a froglike 4 llbs and still did enough damage to necessitate transfusions and emergency surgery. Another friend produced ninepounders with no epi, no stitches and was back in size ten jeans within a couple of weeks. If she weren't my dearest friend I'd have to kill her....

Fordim Hedgethistle 10-22-2007 02:33 PM

Congratulations and best wishes to everyone involved (but particularly to the new mother who, let's face it, had the biggest and most important job).

Free Advice From a Parent: ignore all the advice you are about to get (except this of course).

(Now the real question: when, several years from now, davem reads The Hobbit aloud to the child, will the tra-la-la-la-lalee singing Elves be left in the story or summarily excised as not belonging in the legendarium?)

I think that the reason we have four is so that my wife could finally experience childbirth with an epidural...
  • Child 1 - How bad can the pain be?
  • Child 2 - Preeclampsia complicated labor and birth, and so the anesthesiologist said no, after putting the needle in my wife's back.
  • Child 3 - We rushed to the hospital - Ms. alatar suggesting I run every light and signal as the baby was about to be born in the car  - so when we get to the hospital, we tell the nurses that the baby is about to be born. Experts that they are, knowing that we were just another couple of clueless parents, figured that we could wait in one of the pre-labor rooms. We also stressed that, being aware of the epidural 'window,' that we were keen on getting one immediately. This was met with a yawn. So after a few minutes in the pre-room, I went out and asked a nurse for some gloves and some scissors. She asked why, and I said, "Well, I don't want to contaminate the baby when I cut the cord (the baby hadn't come yet, but it was close)". Suddenly we were rushed to the birthing room amidst apologies and after a few minutes - Ms. alatar try as she might to 'hold it' - we had child #3, missing yet again the epidural. Note that Ms. alatar gave birth a mere 45 minutes upon me dropping her off at the hospital door, and that's due to her trying to hold out for the epidural.
  • Child 4 - We got to the hospital a little earlier this time, and, after explaining to the nurses our prior experiences, got an epidural shortly after arriving.

After experiencing four such events, I can't see Tinúviel or Arwen going through the same ordeal.

Nimrodel_9 10-28-2007 06:27 PM

Yay! Congrats to you both! :D
Have you decided on a name yet?

Ahhh The Cuteness

He's soooooooooo cute!:D

Of course I don't know anything about birthing children, because I am not old enough yet to do so since I am only thirteen! Other than, when my little brother was born, a matter of six and a half years ago he was purple!

I will say this again... he's soooooooooo cute!!!!!
I say you should name him a sensible hobbit name, like ummm... not Ted Sandyman or Lotho Sackville-Baggins!!!!!:D

Lush 11-14-2007 07:19 AM

Yeah, I haven't been around in a while, but this is just to say:

This is what we call "criminally cute." ;)

Mnogaya leta.*

Lalwendë 12-14-2007 03:31 PM

If you aint seen me blog lately...The big little guy is now weighing in at 13lb 11oz and is two foot tall, so almost Hobbit sized in height if not in girth. He's learnt to smile and giggle and is currently eating his fist while listening to The Pogues. He laughs at monkey noises and davem blowing raspberries and currently has his very first bout of 'man-flu' ;)

Bęthberry 12-15-2007 08:32 AM

I always think it is a conundrum, to describe a baby's size before he or she walks: is it really "tall" or would "long" be more appropriate? ;)

He's got a beautiful smile. Isn't it worth all the world and loss of sleep to see that smile? especially when it comes just after an upchuck or the umpteenth nappy change five minutes after the previous one, which drenched the bed too. :)

I think 'long' is right, but it just doesn't sound it!

Surprisingly, nappies are one of the least unpleasant things to deal with - the worst thing is all the worrying you get to do :(

TheGreatElvenWarrior 12-15-2007 09:59 PM

Well, I still don't think you have told us a name.... or is it a secret that you are keeping from all of us *cries*

Folwren 12-15-2007 10:01 PM

I'm pretty sure they promised to tell us....

--Finduilas--

*Really, Finduilas....

TheGreatElvenWarrior 12-16-2007 01:10 AM

They're naming their boy Findulias?
