the flame of anrock, and the flame of anrock 2..........

Eärendil 07-07-2002 12:02 PM

I have read the Silmarillion once in Swedish and once in English, the Hobbit twice, Lotr 6 times, the book of Lost Tales 1 & 2 once, and am hunting the other books....
Oh..when we´re talking about books..when I was in the north of Sweden (came home yesterday) I bought a "kind of"-biography (about Tolkien, in Swedish), and J.R.R Tolkien-A Biography by Carpenter, in English, I am very happy....

:EDIT: - I must have miscounted something when talking about LotR... I am reading it for the 9th time right now (in English for the first time, lovely!) And I have only read LotR once since I posted in this thread. Ack, missed one time! How horrible.. Oh well, just had to change that, it was bothering me...

Since i´m from Argentina, i read the books in spanish. I´d love to try the english version but i´m afraid it´s gonna be a bit too advanced for my english It would be nice to read it with the original names and everything.
Maybe i´ll give it a try when i´m done with the unfinished tales!

Anorien 07-08-2002 11:01 AM

ya know in all honesty, i started to read the Hobbit and put it down because i got bored. So, i started to read LOTR. And, oh my gosh! I couldn't put it down! I read them though once, and then read all my fav parts again and again! LIke, in ROTK, i read the last stretch of Frodo's burden like once a week at least, if not more! And call me pathetic, cause i am, but i read 'a knife in the dark' and 'flight to the ford' a million times since the movie came out in theaters. What can i say? They are the best books ever written! Tolkien IS the author of fantasy!

Elessar,elfstone 07-08-2002 12:11 PM

ive read lotr 3 times, same with the Hobbit, the silmarillian twice, unfinnished tales once and the letters once. and i love it so so much... would people recomend reading the histories of middle earth too?

Cúdae 11-20-2002 07:45 PM

Let's see, this is actually a very hard question for me. My family is very...er...Tolkien-friendly (my parents named 3 of us with Middle-Earth first names and the rest have Middle-Earth names for middle names, just to point one odd fact). Very, very soon after I was born my parents read me the Hobbit, and after that The Lord of the Rings, then the Silmarillion. Imagine reading the Sil to a baby. As a direct result of this my first word was, "Maedhros!" Anyway...moving on...I think they continued reading all three of these books to me until I was old enough to read them for myself, which happened around 4th grade. I read the Sil for myself around 6th grade. I'm seventeen now and I have lost count of both how many times I had the books read to me and how many times I have read them myself. So my answer is, "Too many times to be considered normal anymore." I have read UT twice though and I am currently waiting for the HoME volumes I ordered to arrive.

WarBringer 11-20-2002 07:49 PM

ive read LotR 4 times, the hobbit 3 times, the simarillion, the book of lost tales one and two, and unfinished tales.

Arathiriel 11-20-2002 09:32 PM

I've read LOTR once but I plan to reread the trilogy sometime early next year...

I have yet to make it through The Silmarillion or The Hobbit even once...

Morgoth Bauglir 11-20-2002 09:53 PM

Beruthiel 11-21-2002 12:26 AM

I've read LOTR 5 times and I'm reading TTT again before the movie comes out but I'll probably just read the whole thing! I've read the Hobbit twice BUT I CAN'T FIND THE SILMARILLION ANYWHERE!! I used to live in Malaysia so it was no suprise but now I'm in Australia and still I can't get it.
anyway my mum read the hobbit and lotr to me when I was young so I've been addicted ever since. an you know what? my mum complains that I'm too obsessed!

Orogaerion 11-21-2002 01:58 AM

btw, i have read the lotr 8 times, the hobbit about 5-6 and the sil 3 and reading it once more atm i am also reading the entire HoME series

Lindril Arvilya 11-21-2002 04:04 PM

I believe I've read the whole set three times through, and The Silmarillion once. (Currently on my second go.) The Hobbit around four or five times. I have to finish The Two Towers by noon on Saturday, as I'm going to see the exhibit then. Huzzah!

kaleidoscope 11-21-2002 06:06 PM

I've read The Hobbit 3 times, LOTR 5 times, The Silmarillion 2 times (I'm working on my 3rd), and UT 1 time.

FYI
I don't have very much spare time to read. I go to school. I am taking all of the honors courses that are offered at my school and I get entirely too much homework. So, my spare time is limited.

Lindolirian 11-26-2002 08:06 PM

Cudae: Sounds a lot like what I want to bring my kids up on!

LotR: 35 (twenty of it was speed reading)
Hobbit: 8
Sil: 9
UT: 4?
HoMe #1-8: once

Beren87 11-27-2002 12:56 PM

If you go back to the first page, you'll find someone named "hegemonmatt". That's me! I've read it easily over a hundred times now, though not quite as frequently as I used to. Maybe once a week when I find the time. THe Silm i've now read 11 times, as it takes a week to get through.

Helkahothion 11-27-2002 01:30 PM

I have just discoverd Middle Earth for a small year now and i'm busy reading lotr for the second time.

I have not read any other books yet.
