Wow, Saucepan, that's a really interesting site. My hardback LotR set is there, apparently they are worth a lot of money! ($300 - $5000 if I read that right! ) Mind you, the nasty smell is sure to lower their value. My father's set is also there, and priced at $300, and my Silmarillion too, for $100. I'm amazed they're so valuable.

Yes, SaucepanMan, that was a VERY interesting site. Thanks!
Here's another one: Mike's Tolkien Resources |
Mine are the same as legolas'. The Ballantine books with Ted Nasmith's art on them. I'm glad I got those because for some reason I don't like the ones with the movie pictures on them. I love the movies but I guess I like to keep book and movie seperate.

My original copies of The Hobbit & LotR are from the 1960's and are the Ballantine paperbacks. All four have the surrealistic pictures that seem to match nothing in the story.
I also have an oversized paperback boxed set from 1978 (Houghton Mifflin) with LotR & The Hobbit. The books are beige and box is green. I have paperback & hardback of The Silm (same picture on cover of both of Tolkein's drawing of a mountain pass). Hardback is Houghton Mifflin 1977; paperback is Ballantine 1979. Quote:

I just got a new Fellowship today! It is covered in red fabric with a jacket or whatever that has a picture of Moria on the front and the trolls' clearing on the back. It is illustrated by Alan Lee

The Hobbit is orange with a picture of Gandalf and Bilbo building a campfire near a stone bridge.
FOTR is green with the painting of Rivendell by a waterfall like in the movie. TTT is the picture from the movie of Frodo and Sam looking down at Emyn Muil. ROTK is the picture from FOTR (the movie) of Minas Tirith with birds flying around it. And the Silm is a weird greenish color with that picture of an elf with the Silmarils, the same picture as Eruwen has. My friend has a torn up FOTR that I think has a picture of the Fellowship climbing up Caradhras. |
The Hobbit - The Red Outline of a Dragon (Hand-drawn by Tolkien himself)
FotR - Gandalf and Frodo walking along a cliff next ac waterfall close to Rivendell. TTT - Movie Logo, behind is what looks like Galadriel in the rain. RotK - Movie Logo, behind is what looks like Sarumans Tower. |
