Congrats, Samwise - you're certainly on a roll right now. Hope you're feeling a little better from that .

Aragorn, random question; would you happen to be a fan of B5?

Samwise 04-06-2002 11:08 PM

Thank you, Aragorn.
Uh, Kalimac, a tad more specific.
Quote:

"Elves! " exclaimed Sam. "Elves, sir!" He would have burst out of the trees and dashed off, if they had not pulled him back.

Kalimac 04-06-2002 11:11 PM

Sorry...I'm kind of slow this evening...do you mean just a gumball then? Or am I off-track?

Samwise 04-06-2002 11:15 PM

Yep, that was it. Just the gumball.
Well, my brain is near wore out, an' I'm havin' trouble keepin' my eyes open. Miss Kalimac and Mister Aragorn, sir, I hope to see you next time I come wanderin' through here.

"Yes, sir!" said Sam. "Begging your pardon, sir! But I meant no wrong to you, Mr. Frodo, nor to Mr. Gandalf. He has some sense, and when you said go alone, he said no! take someone as you can trust. "

Kalimac 04-06-2002 11:19 PM

Cool! (Oh lord, now I have to think of another one...well, I'll think about it for a bit). Have a good night, m'lady Samwise .

Meanwhile, in lieu of the new riddle I haven't thought of yet, I'll refer people back to the "two brothers" one I posted on the first page.

Amanruthiel 04-07-2002 05:53 AM

Hi, sorry not been on for a couple of days - wow we've moved.

Yes, Nuranar it was life!

There are two of them, they are brothers
The second twice as large as the first
To know the second, you must meet the first
Although only the second is ever sought.
Every man meets them.

Who/what are they?

Is it birth and death.

Boy, Kalimac, this is hard! Question: Is the second actually twice as large, or is it just larger in a metaphorical sense, and not necessarily twice as large?

Hmm...Guess I'll keep working on it!

Aragorn Husband of Arwen 04-07-2002 11:45 AM

Kalimac, yes I would be.

Kalimac 04-07-2002 10:00 PM

No, it's not birth and death. Good guess, though!

Nuranar - it's literally twice as large, but just remember that that statement can apply to a couple of different angles of the answer .

Aragorn - The Z'ha'dum kind of tipped me off - actually I've seen very little B5 but have friends who were devoted to it and have taped every episode. And hearing them talk about it I was rather struck by the similarity to Khazad-Dum...total coincidence, I'm sure .

Still trying to think of my new riddle - I'll be back .

Amanruthiel 04-08-2002 02:17 AM

Sorry to go off track - but stuck on Kalimac's riddle (good one!)

There are a numebr of links between B5 and LOTR - I read an article about it. Another link is the us of Rangers - they even dress the same. (Just though you may be interested!!)

Rimbaud 04-08-2002 07:26 AM

Kalimac - my guess for your superb riddle is 'Life & Love'; although I am nearly sure I am incorrect. It's definitely a tricky one...

Amanruthiel 04-08-2002 10:11 AM

Kalimac - still stumped - a clue if you please.

A xx

Aragorn Husband of Arwen 04-08-2002 11:36 AM

Kalimac - I'm not that big of a fan. But the similarity between the two are amazing. I'll try to find the link, but I found a website talking of the similarites.

Also, give clue, Im stumped!

I was thinking of Boyhood/Manhood, but on reflection I am not so sure.

I have been racking my brain cell for days thinking of another riddle, still racking.

Hm. Sounds good to me, sir.

LOL.......Robin Hood country....

It's true as well!

F.G.

Kalimac 04-08-2002 09:06 PM

Oof...now I'm hoping the riddle wasn't *too* vague. All of the guesses are really ingenious (I mean, they're not answers I'd ever have thought of, if presented with this riddle) but I really didn't intend to stymie the thread to this point. Here are some hints:

(1) Both answers begin with the same letter (I've given this one before)

(2) The second "brother" is literally twice as large as the first, but not in a way that can be physically measured (what I mean is, don't try to use a ruler, tape measure, scale or anything like that, it won't work)

(3) Both of them physically stimulate the nerves. And no, they're not off-color, so don't bother .

Hope that helps. If this goes on much longer, would you mind if I just told the answer? Then you'll all know and can say in chorus "WHAT? How do get that answer from those clues?" .

The Sun and the Moon?

And speaking of Kalimac's riddle...(kidding)...

Here's another from Sam.

I have no physical form
but I can bring a man to a halt.
As large as I may seem,
something quite small can end my reign.
What am I?

Samwise, is yours an illness? It's not the Sun and the Moon either. Oh dear...

Firladion, now you make me want to visit Robin Hood country ...

BTW about my last one - is anyone for just having me tell what the answer is and then barraging me? I wouldn't mind if the rest wouldn't.

Samwise 04-08-2002 09:36 PM

In a sense, Kalimac.
Okay, one more guess, and then I'll go get some snails out of the garden to throw at you (kidding.....)
LOVE and FREINDSHIP? No, those don't have sizes.....ah, I don't know!

Ouch, poor snails. (Unless they do something nasty to plants; never lived in snail country when it comes to gardening). No, it's not love and friendship (do you like Jane Austen, Samwise? ). Would you like to know the answer? It was a little scary to log in this evening and see all those "I have no idea" messages, maybe I should just get it over with .

Is yours a headache? (Aspirin getting rid of it).

Samwise 04-08-2002 09:58 PM

........or tylenol, or in my case CODINE after this riddle.....yep, that's it.
(I realized when I posted the riddle, I also posted the haiku about Sam whacking the Orc...giveaway, no? )

Please, Kalimac, post the answer! I'm sure I'll smack my head and dance around the room, calling myself a triple imbecile, but all the same I don't have the energy to try to guess it.

Samwise, I like your riddle - although I'm not a man, it's unfortunately all too true for me...and sometimes the "something quite small" doesn't end its reign...

Kalimac 04-08-2002 10:37 PM

OK everyone, here it is, and I'll admit right here that some of the clues were a little...off-kilter...so please don't banish me ... please?

The riddle is:

There are two of them, they are brothers
The second twice as large as the first
To know the second, you must meet the first
Although only the second is ever sought.
Every man meets them.
Who/what are they?

The answer is.......PAIN and PLEASURE. They're a natural pair (brothers), and you have to experience pain before you can appreciate pleasure (if you want to be very literal, everyone experiences the pain of birth before they can experience the pleasure of, well, anything else). And nobody deliberately seeks out pain - well, there are a few exceptions but we're talking about the normal 99% of the world here - while everyone seeks pleasant experiences. Every man meets them - that probably doesn't need too much explanation.

And as for "the second twice as large as the first" - well, count the number of letters in each word.

There it is. All questions and scoldings are welcome . And while I have a couple more riddles which I'm due to come up with, I can promise wholeheartedly that I will not use the number of letters as a clue ever again.

Amanruthiel 04-09-2002 06:11 AM

Kalimac

May I be the first to congratualte you for such a taxing riddle! Honestly would never have got it!!

Off to take some nurofen now to get rid of my headache from trying to solve it.

A xx

Rimbaud 04-09-2002 07:49 AM

Kalimac - very good; enjoyable trying to solve it. Congrats, that was a good one.

Um...

How about:
I do not breathe, but I run and jump.
I do not eat, but I swim and stretch.
I do not drink, but I sleep and stand.
I do not think, but I grow and play.
I do not see, but you see me every day.

AnnúnwenOfRivendell 04-09-2002 01:09 PM

Gosh, that's a good one Stephanos, I'm going to have to think about that one tonight. I'll try to have an answer tomorrow.

LOL--I'm not either, Nuranar. I thought about putting it that way when I posted it--but I couldn't figure out anyway to word it otherwise. TY.

Hmm, I'll be thinking about yours, Stephanos, while I'm studying tonight...

LOL, I know you're not, Samwise!

Nuranar 04-09-2002 08:00 PM

Okay, here's the first fruit of my (mental) labors.

Stephanos: My shadow?

It seems to fit everything.

Samwise 04-09-2002 08:13 PM

'Kay. Keep forgetting who here knows that an' who dosen't.

Aragorn Husband of Arwen 04-09-2002 08:25 PM

Kalimac: Excellent riddle.

I agree with Nuranar, that would be the only thing I can think of.

Kalimac 04-09-2002 08:26 PM

Nuranar - Thank you [Kalimac blushes]. Shadow sounds good as an answer to Stephanos' riddle as anything - in fact I can't even THINK of anything else.

Samwise - Umm, was that a good AIIII or a bad AIIII?

And in case anyone is still willing to guess at a riddle that I wrote, here's one of the backed-up ones I should have done a while ago.

Millions of lives will end to create me
In every house it happens, every day.
I am not alive, and yet I grow.
And when my growth is ended, I will shrink
Until there is nothing left.

Samwise 04-09-2002 08:44 PM

"Shadow" sounds good to me, too.

Kalimac, that was a combination of things 1) at how good that riddle was, 2)at the headache I got trying to figure it out 3)relief that my widdle brain no longer has to try to figure it out!

As to your newest riddle, Kalimac--dust?
Quote:

When thirteen had fallen and the rest fled shrieking, leaving the defenders unharmed, except for Sam, who had a scratch along the scalp. A quick duck had saved him; and he had felled his Orc; a sturdy thrust with his Barrow-blade. A fire was smouldering in his brown eyes that would have made Ted Sandyman step backwards, if he had seen it.

Kalimac 04-09-2002 08:48 PM

Samwise - no, not dust. But it is something you see around the house a lot (wait, I think I just said more about the condition of my apartment than I meant to... )

Stephanos are you out there? Is it a shadow or do we have to start over?

Samwise 04-09-2002 08:58 PM

LOL! Yeah, as I made that guess I thought about the room I rent.....
Quote:

"What did you see?" said Pippin to Sam, but Sam was too deep in thought to answer.
