What, you've tried? And just try to hold an image of Pipping swearing at an Uruk in your head for 5 seconds with a straight face, really.

One of my favorites is definetely
Quote:

We come, we come with roll of drum: ta-runda runda runda run!
We come, we come with horn and drum; ta-runa runa runa rom!

To Isengard! Though Isengard be ringed and barred with doors of stone;
Though Isengard be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone,
We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door;
For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars — we go to war!
To land of gloom with tramp of doom, with rool of drum, we come, we come;
To Isengard with doom we come!
With doom we come, with doom we come!

and of course
Quote:

Baruk Khazud! Khazud Ai-menu!
and
Quote:

Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake; fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

Scott 05-13-2003 05:37 PM

One of my all time favorites is admittedly non-Tolkien - so I translated it into Quenya for the sport of it.
Inigo Montoya ea essenya. Elle mance atarinya. Avaleryal qualmen!
My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die. (lit. "Inigo Montoya is my name. You killed my father. Make ready for death!")
~The Princess Bride

I'm not so sure about the swearing thing... Even though it could throw your enemy off guard, it's a little un chilvalric.
But then again, if you're trying to kill or mame someone, chivalry is pretty low on the priority list.

GaladrieloftheOlden 05-13-2003 05:48 PM

Scott- I didn’t think of Inigo’s one. That’s my favorite battle “cry” of all non Tolkien, and some Tolkien ones too, except my Quenya is not near good enough to start translating things myself yet.

Minyataurien 05-14-2003 01:35 PM

I love For Gondor! Me and my sis have pretend battles with our neighbors and my team is always Gondor. We blow this horn and say For Gondor, For Gondor! I might add we always win.

Lalaith 05-14-2003 02:14 PM

Salix, on a cd I have of Tolkien doing his own readings, there is an excerpt of him reading the Ents battle march - it is really good.

Scott 05-14-2003 09:27 PM

Well, battle cries were pretty well covered, but what about laments as well? my obvious first choice (first to mind as well) was, of course, the "A Elbereth Gilthonniel" poem.
Any others?

Helkahothion 05-15-2003 03:55 AM

Nope a Elbereth Gilthoniel is quite cool.

Mirendabeth 05-15-2003 04:47 AM

I liked in in FotR when Pippin and Merry were messing about with Boromir, and they shouted "For the Shire!". Some people don't count it as a battle cry, but I thought I'd share anyway!

The Flame Of Anor 05-15-2003 02:23 PM

The best battle cry is in my signature. Anyone who says otherwise is asking for my to smite them. Although some others might be close....

The Flame Of Anor 05-15-2003 02:24 PM

Also, although its not exactly a battle cry:

The Horn Of Helm Hammerhand will sound once more in the deep!

Also, "For the Shire!" Is almost as good, but you have to yell it, not jokingly as in the movie.

"Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!"
What more can I say?

Awww, that takes the fun out of it. If you're gonna go out, go out with dignity and style - not flailing and screaming expletives. Although that could be just me... You could at least say something profound. Or silence. Complete silence. Silence can be very intimidating and kind of creepy. With perhaps one simple word or phrase upon victory. That's how I'd do it anyway. (hoping for victory of course )

But no one has hit the all-time best battle cry yet! I couldn't believe it! Are you telling me that NONE of you would yell Attercop? I mean c'mon... If you're not going out with style and dignity, at least shock them with your insanity. So, I'd have to get into two battles. One for each.

But all the other posted cries have been good. (And I do like Inigo Montoya's. See, now there's style and dignity.) But Tolkien was really good in the sayings department...

Sillabub 05-15-2003 05:44 PM

FOR GONDOR!!!!!!! (In case u people don't know already, I'm VERY patriotic about beautiful Gondor)

TOUCH THE MONKEY, DAMMIT!!! (thanx to the middle-earth races quiz for that one)

Numenorean 05-16-2003 05:40 AM

Don't know if this one by Hurins phalanx has been done yet, but it always feels madly inspiring to me:

Quote:

And the sun glittered on fifty blades as they leaped forth, and the court rang with the battle-cry of the Edain of the North: Lacho calad! Drego morn! Flame Light! Flee night!

Oddwen 05-16-2003 06:06 AM

I had forgotten about Attercop! That's one of the best, sure.
Alas, I used to have it memorized.
"I'm far more sweet than other meat, and still they cannot find me!"

Nerindel 05-16-2003 07:43 AM

I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

this is also one of my favourite cries as are most of the cries made by Eomer and Theoden, but my Favourite has to be :
Quote:

'But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.
If it can be counted as a battle cry?

Lindril Arvilya 05-17-2003 11:10 AM

Eulalia! (Sorry, Redwall coming through... anyone read those?)

At the dentists, in my mind I'm chanting A Elbereth! Gilthoniel! and imagining the dentists running away from the light.

Uh, anyhow.

Yes, my favourite has to be "Forth Eorlingas!" It was a wonderful sound to it. *jumps on the bandwagon*

Tarien Ithil 05-19-2003 11:49 AM

OK, I know this is cliché but I like Buruk Khazad! Khazad ai menu!
It’s quite aggressive

"For the Shire!" definitely counts in my book.

My personal favorite is "A Elbereth, Gilthoniel!", though who doesn't get chills with "Forth Eorlingas!"? And of course, the Ents' song is just amazing. I sing that to myself every now and then.

"Day shall come again!" is another one that gave me chills. Also from the Silmarillion, though I don't know if this counts as a battle cry:

"Auta i lomë! The night is passing!"

But all the ones mentioned before are great, especially the Rohirrim ones. Those are usually the ones that make me want to jump up and cheer. Or something to that effect.

Also, to whoever mentioned Inigo's - I heartily agree on that one.

Scott 05-19-2003 06:19 PM

Why, thank you kindly
Also, where'd you find auta i lome? I don't think I've ever seen that one before.

My favorite's only been mentioned once!

Quote:

Amroth for Gondor! Amroth to Faramir!
Although my second favorite:
Quote:

Aure Entuluva!
has had quite a few mentions. This really is rather an inspiring topic.

"I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow. You cannot pass!"
Dunno if this is a battle cry but it’s a great bunch of writing!

It was in The Silmarillion, in the chapter about the Fifth Battle. Since I have no life, I looked up the actual passage.

"Then when Fingon heard afar the great trumpet of Turgon his brother, the shadow passed and his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: 'Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatari, utúlie'n aurë! The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!' And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered crying: 'Auta i lómë! The night is passing!'"

I just really love that passage.

And I think "You cannot pass!" can count as a bit of a war cry. And even if you don't think of it like that, then you're right, it's fantastic writing.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-25-2003 08:19 PM

Here's one that hasn't been mentioned at all, truly stirring:
Quote:

"Anduril for the Dunedain!"
"Guthwine for the Mark!"
"Anduril! Anduril goes to war! The Blade that Was Broken shines again!"
Of course, in the book there's more description between the cries, but the first part is Aragorn, the second part is Eomer, and the third is the Rohirrim army at Helm's Deep. Makes me shiver all over, think of the prophecy fulfilled in that moment.

maikafanawen 05-25-2003 08:50 PM

My two favorites are:

Quote:

We come, we come with roll of drum: ta-runda runda runda run!
We come, we come with horn and drum; ta-runa runa runa rom!
To Isengard! Though Isengard be ringed and barred with doors of stone;
Though Isengard be strong and hard, as cold as stone and bare as bone,
We go, we go, we go to war, to hew the stone and break the door;
For bole and bough are burning now, the furnace roars — we go to war!
To land of gloom with tramp of doom, with rool of drum, we come, we come;
To Isengard with doom we come!
With doom we come, with doom we come!

mentioned already by Diamond and Salix, and

Quote:

"Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode, and to heart's breaking;
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!"

mentioned by Nerindel. There's probably a billion more in the Silmarilion--I've got to read that!!!

The fave of mine? "Let's kick some ... well ....places where back loses it's honourable name " !!!
But if we're talkin' Tolkienologicly : "Hoooom Boom , Hrrrmm Boom Booooom" (I belive that means "The Ents go to war" or somethin' like that) .
