I usually don't read that fast, unless I feel like it. I usually get through The Hobbit-LotR-The Silmarillion in about a month and a half. But I can read The Hobbit in a day if I want. <img src=smile.gif ALT=":)">

Interesting Question

It's been years since I've read the whole trilogy+ straight through. Every once in a while I'll browse through a chapter or two, especially recently with the movie coming out soon.

The Hobbit was the third real book that I ever read (after Tom Sawyer and White Fang) when I was about ten. It took me a whole summer in my off hours at camp to get through it - incidentally the same summer I learned how to play D&amp;D. The two played off of each other quite well.

I tried reading the Lord of the Rings shortly thereafter, but I must admit it was hard going. I basically gave up around Helm's Deep six months later.

I took another shot at it when I was in High School and I absolutely loved it. Don't remember how long it took. I've probably read the whole series completely about half a dozen times.

The best was when I was in the Peace Corps. I was posted in a large town and had access to a large library of English print books. There was a month long period in which I was &quot;between&quot; jobs (I was a teacher and the teachers were on strike). I spent nearly the entire month hanging out in a hunting lodge on the edge of town that was popular with French tourists. It was like something out of a Bogart film. I easily read fifty books that month. One day when no one else was around I started reading at about 9 AM and blasted my way through the Hobbit, LOTR and about half of the Sil for good measure. The best part was that it was hippo migration season, so I enjoyed the periodic spectacle of herds of hippos floating down the Charay River. Not a bad way to pass a day.

well...i read
fast...that doesn't mean that im a lousy reader..cuz some people think so..i havwe read hard books since i was small and i love reading..i read everyword with csre..i have read the 1half book the first other half book and the 2 half book ...for everybook it took me 1 days...or mostly few hours/like 5~6~7 hours.

I really don't read fast, and it doesn't bother me one bit. I like the fact that it takes a few weeks(2-3) for me to read LOTR. I least I knew that the first time that I read it, when I went to bed with all those thoughts running through my brain, that in the morning the book would still be there with the answers that I seeked. If I read it in a day or two, I wouldnt have much to look forward too, without picking up a new book and starting fresh.

Reading "The Hobbit" seems alot easier to read then other Tolkien books, so I can usually spend a few days on it. Like I said above it usually takes a few weeks for the LOTR. And I just finished reading the Siml, and it has taken me about a month. I find the book, absolutely fascinating. I usually re-read chapters, everytime a question "popped" into my head about a fellows name or history.

I guess if I could devote days and days of reading, it wouldnt take that long. But with family and work and all the good things in life, sometimes reading gets pushed aside. But I think I will always take my time when it comes to reading, savoring all the sweet things. I am looking forward to reading much more of Tolkiens works, and it seems it will take quite some time(maybe even a few years), but thats quite all right with me!

But one thing now that I have to look forward to after finishing or even in the middle of a Tolkien book, is this wonderful forum, which brings many new/old answers and questions to my mind!

The fastest i've read LOTR is I think 5 days...But that was my third time and I'm starting on my fourth! I wish I had read it more times , but oh well.

Sigh...I'm afraid it was too long ago to remember, though I do plan on correcting that...

I started The Fellowship on December 1 and finished it a few days before the 19th I just finished The Return of the King about a week ago. I would have finished a lot sooner, but the only time I have to read is during study hall, before shool, and the 2 or 3 minutes before each class starts.

well...I got in the habit of reading books when I was very little so I'm a fast reader. It's the school holidays and, in between everything else, I've read LOTR in three days...the Sil is a lot harder going!
With anything pertaining to Middle Earth I like to read slowly and make sure I'm not missing anything [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] It also has the virtue of simply prolonging the experience...in LOTR my favourite passages are probably those that are descriptive of character, Ithilien and the dialogue between Eowyn and Faramir [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

I enjoyed reading a lot when I was younger. I'm starting to get back into it, as he's been loaning me different books to read....hey, maybe I can persuade him to lend me his LOTR's..... [img]smilies/wink.gif[/img]

I can read 1 Book each day from front to back. [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Here's a way to read faster.(it works for me) Have a kind of compitition with a friend. Try and always be ahead of them in the book. It's really fun! Corse it's always good to go at your own pace.

Ok...so I've only read LOTR once...and it was after I had seen the movie 4 times...but it took me just under a week. And that was with me working 30 hours a week and still having a fairly active social life (and trust me...being a Rennie...that takes up a lot of time...even in the off season). I'm gonna start reading The Silmarillion soon so we'll see how long that takes. [img]smilies/tongue.gif[/img]

Hi all, I shall make my first post about my introduction to the books. Time 1967, long weekend before finals at small lib-arts school mid Pen. Recieve in mail from estranged aunt all 4 books previous weekend. Read the Hobbit leasurely through the week. Then on friday began LOTR. Didn't stop. Crashed in the morning but continued few hours latter. Finished the books Monday morning and was 15 - 20 miniuts late to first exame The Only Time I ever did that. I am a relitively slow reader and I tend to subvocalize and concetrate so hard that I am "there". Absolutely no skipping or skimming for me. As a rule I do very little rereading so the movie was wanderful because the details had faded enough to be no distraction. Looking forward to sharing ideas. Hi, I am new to this board and to LOTR. I am 23, an yes, this is the first time that I have read the books. I started LOTR on Sat Jan 27 and I finished Monday Feb 4.

All I can say is that I wish I had read them sooner. I normaly devour books, I can read a 350 page book in about 6 hrs. But the depth of these books are amazing. I started reading early middle ages stuff in college in British Lit class. I fell in love with Beowulf, Sir Gawain, and King Arthur's Court.

I usually read fast. But when i was younger, my dad gave me the Hobbit for one christmas, and i tried to get into the book 3 different times, and i couldnt finish it. After seeing the movie, i decided to try it and my coworker who was nutso over the LOTR lent me the hobbit and i finally finished it but it took me few weeks for me to finish it tho. Then i went to get 3 in one volume book(I m cheap :P~) and i m now in the 6th chapter i think, it s really fast read for me! I work nowadays, so i dont read as much i used to. but it does make me want to read in one sitting [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img] i think to finish the whole 3 books, it ll take me a month at most.

I read all three books(FOTR, TTT, ROTK) in two days..I just couldn't put it down..
It took bit longer to read Silmarillon..maybe something like 5 days? I think Silmarillon is bit..harder to understand..

The first book took me around three days, the second took me four and I had to stop half way in the third because of Exams. But it took me a day to read through half of 'The return of the King'

I can still remember getting the beautiful white and green Ballantine edition in 1973 for Christmas. (I had checked the first volume out of the school library.) I read the next two volumes in two days, dragging it with me to all the relatives' houses, reading far into the night with a flashlight. I'm sure my parents regretted ever getting me the thing.

Couldn't do that now. For one thing, I never bury my nose in a book now when company is around.

I have a slight problem in that when I start reading a book I can't stop until I run out of words. To that end, I read the Hobbit, and the trilogy in about 36 hours. I followed with the Silmarillion, but that really needs concentration so that took me another day. I was in bed with flu at this time though!

I remember reading 'The Hobbit' when I was around 17. I remember it being in my older brother's bookcase (an actual 60's hippie) but I didn't read it until I was around 17 and had been indulging in 'Old Toby' for a year or two. I remember telling my brother I had read The Hobbit, and he said 'ah, now you have to read LoTR!' I had no idea what he was talking about, but I started reading FoTR a few days later. I know I finished the three books in less than a week.

I read them now, on avg, once a year, usually in the fall. That is when I first read it, and I seem to go into a LoTR spell around the date of Bilbo and Frodo's birthdate (Sept 22). This last time I read them, I just read bits and pieces over 4 months leading up to the movie. I mean, rather than sitting down and devouring 100+ pages, I'd just read 20 or 30. I just finished RoTK a few weeks ago, and am now reading 'Unfinished Tales.'

Hmmm...I'm a pretty fast reader and also very obsessed...I think my best (I've read LOTR 5 times...) was one day. It was during the summer...I'd already read it twice...it was pretty easy going for me. When I say a day..I mean like 20 hours...in a row...I even read on my way to the kitchen and bathroom. No kidding! I think the Hobbit, nowadays, takes me about half a day of obsessibe compulsive reading, like two if I'm being normal and don't have school or work. I'm reading the Silmarillion now, but I'm in the middle of a grueling semester. Yuck. So it's taking me a long time. *sigh* But I really love it. My goal is to have read everything by Tolkien and on Tolkien by next December. Wish me luck! There's a lot!

When I did attempt to read Lotr, I read the first 7 chapters in about half an hour.

The Hobbit usually takes a few hours... and I can read LoTR in a couple days...
