Hmmm

That was actually a good question! Maybe with a more direct hint someone wd have gotten it. Not me, but someone.

P.s. I don't have RotK with me, but I didn't think that the Mouth of Sauron said "Gandalf", just "old fool" or whatever.

Re: Hmmm

Hmmm You're mixing up the bad guys!

The Mouth of Sauron:

Quote:
But this time thou hast stuck out thy nose too far, Master Gandalf

The Lord og the Nazgul:

Quote:
Old foll! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it?

<marquee>It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes!!! ... Anar kaluva tielyanna!</marquee>

Odysseus819 09-24-2001 05:58 PM

I should have known better thn to question you, master dwarf.

Ok seince no one else is asking one, find the odd man out:

Maedhros
Hurin Thalion
Celegorm
Turin Turambar

Telchar 09-25-2001 02:06 AM

hmmm this seems too easy, so Im surely wrong. But Celegorm was killed by Dior, whereas the others took their own lives (in folly some might say)

Odysseus819 09-25-2001 05:49 AM

Yep, I gave you an easy one -- only Celegorm was not a suicide.

Telchar 09-25-2001 06:26 AM

ERU, I'M GOOD - OK this shouldn't be that hard

BEORN
THRAIN
BOLG
BILBO
THORIN

Odysseus819 09-25-2001 12:47 PM

Thrain, because he did not participate in the Battle of Five Armies?

Telchar 09-26-2001 02:31 AM

Ohh Yes - not too hard was it?

Odysseus819 09-26-2001 11:44 AM

Well that's two easy ones in a row -- I have to come up with something harder -- give me a little time.

Telchar 09-26-2001 11:55 AM

http://www.hbgk.dk/mus.gif My god - He is going to come up with something really hard!!!! Aaargghhhhhh!!!!

Odysseus819 09-27-2001 07:00 AM

I thought it was "stonehearted", not "wise-*** ".

OK here's another easy one:

Galadriel
Gandalf
Faramir
Frodo

Telchar 09-27-2001 09:19 AM

hmmm... lots of possibilities...

One would be that Faramir wasn't on the ship sailing West with the others. or that he never wore a Ring of Power

Odysseus819 09-28-2001 10:26 AM

No. This one might be a litle tricky in that the answer is a little subjective. You're second guess was closer, but Faramir is not the answer. Let's say that 3 of these people accomplished something which teh 4th failed to do.

P.s. are you and I the only ones who do "Odd Men Out" quizzes any more???

Elenhin 09-28-2001 12:23 PM

Frodo was the only one to fail in resisting the temptation of the One Ring?

P.S. no

Turambar 09-29-2001 05:18 AM

Exactly, Elenhin ! You ask one.

(P.s. I changed my name to a more suitable one for this forum -- Odysseus.)

Elenhin 09-29-2001 10:49 AM

Thranduil
Galadriel
Nerdanel
Gildor

P.S. It seems that these boards aren't as active as they were before

Odysseus819 10-02-2001 02:06 PM

YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN !

WELL NERDANEL IS THE ONLY ONE NOT TO SURVIVE THE FIRST AGE . . .

Elenhin 10-03-2001 06:03 AM

I don't think that it's said anywhere that she died... anyway, that's not what I'm after.

(Hint: this is about what they are, not what they did)

Orald 10-07-2001 02:31 PM

was she the only silvan elf?

Elenhin 10-10-2001 09:00 AM

Nerdanel was a Noldo and the wife of Feanor; Thranduil is the only Wood-Elf on my list.
However, their kindreds/cultures are not what I'm after.

(Hint: picture these Elves in your mind... what do you see?)

Turambar 10-11-2001 02:00 PM

Gildor -- the only unmarried one?

Nerdanel -- never met a Baggins?

Orald 10-11-2001 09:13 PM

DO! I was thinking of Nimrodel.

Okay how about Thranduil being the only king, well, you know what I mean. Because Galdriel was never queen of Lorien, Nerdanel was never queen of any noldor and Gildor was no king.

Elenhin 10-12-2001 10:25 AM

These are all good suggestions - but I'm after something else...

Yet another hint: it's about how they look like.

Turambar 10-12-2001 02:37 PM

Was Galadriel the only blonde?

Elenhin 10-13-2001 01:56 AM

That's getting very close - but no, Galadriel isn't the only blonde on my list. I'm looking for a feature even more exceptional among the Elves.

(Hm. I'm starting to wonder if this was mentioned outside of HoMe series at all...)

Orald 10-13-2001 11:09 PM

Nerdanel had five children and Feanor thought she was still attractive enough to give it another go.

But seriously, I can't think of any physical traits other than hair color and eye color that you could compare with 4 people. Nerdanel probably had black hair and Gildor had either black or blonde hair, depending on his lineage, Thranduil's I don't believe is mentioned.

Maybe you should just tell us after the next couple guesses, because the majority of or answers have been right, like Thranduil being the only King, non-Noldor and Nerdanel not being in ME.

PLEEEZ just tell us.

Elenhin 10-14-2001 04:07 AM

Okay, here it goes:
Galadriel - blonde
Thranduil - blonde
Gildor - blonde (or maybe black, we can't be exactly sure)
Nerdanel - red-haired. HoMe XII talks about Nerdanel's father being one of the best copper-smiths among the Noldor, and that his hair had glints of coppery red. Maedhros and Feanor's youngest sons (the twins) are said to have inherited the red-brown hair of their mother's kin as well.

I thought that Nerdanel's exceptional hair-color was mentioned in the Silmarillion, but when I gave it a look I found it's not so.

The first one to read this may continue the thread.

Turambar 10-14-2001 10:00 AM

Where does it say that Thranduil was blonde, Elenhin?

Elenhin 10-14-2001 02:27 PM

The Hobbit explicitly states that the Elven-king had blonde hair. This was of course the same king of Mirkwood who was called Thranduil in the Lord of the Rings.

Turambar 10-16-2001 05:35 AM

I wasn't doubting you Elenhin, I just didn't remember the reference.

Try this:

Feanor
Fingon
Luthien
Gwaihir

Telchar 10-16-2001 05:58 AM

This is probably not it, but it's actually a good answer I think

Fingon resqued Maedhros from imprisonment
Luthien resqued Beren from imprisonment
Gwaihir resqued Gandalf from imprisonment

Fëanor is odd out because he didnt resque anybody!

[ October 16, 2001: Message edited by: Telchar ]

Turambar 10-16-2001 10:50 AM

That's it exactly, Telchar. I guess Gwaihir gave it away, but I couldn't think of a third non-winged rescuer.

Telchar 10-17-2001 01:34 AM

Thanks Turambar, You could have tried Sam for resqueing Frodo , Bombadil for resqueing the Hobbits, Bilbo for resqueing the dwarves or even Frodo for resqueing Lobelia Anyway try this one

Gandalf
Frodo
Théoden
Gimli
Sam

Damnit - I myself have for the time being forgotten the answer to this one ...

I'll give a new one and a good too, if I might add

Eomer
Legolas
Gandalf
Aragorn

Elrian 11-04-2001 01:02 AM

Eomer, he wasn't a member of the fellowship?

Telchar 11-05-2001 03:25 AM

Nope - this one is a little more profound come again

Finwe 11-05-2001 10:42 AM

How about Gandalf?
Coz.........
All the others were heirs to thrones.
