Manwe made the final decision, with authority given to him by Iluvatar.

He decided that none of the Eldar may have two living spouses. Finwe was allowed to remarry only if Miriel wished to stay in Mandos until the end of Arda.

obloquy 09-23-2001 02:36 PM

Hrm...My understanding is that it was Mandos' decision that stood.

Go ahead, Elenhin. You were close since Manwe was the one who declared Mandos the judge of the matter. And I gave it away already. :P

Elenhin 09-25-2001 09:28 AM

Well, I answered without checking the books, so I guess your answer is more correct than mine

But, if you say I got close enough:
Of what deed of the Valar did Tolkien say that 'it came near to countering Morgoth in his own way', and that it had a 'selfish or neglectful' motive?

Telchar 09-25-2001 10:25 AM

That they called the Elves to Valinor???

Elenhin 09-26-2001 07:58 AM

Nope - evil may have come because of the invitation, but its motive wasn't selfish or neglectful.

Try again

Telchar 10-15-2001 03:29 AM

The hiding of Valinor???

Elenhin 10-15-2001 09:03 AM

Well, since it's been so long and your answer was almost the one I was looking for, you can have the next question.

What I originally meant was the lifting of the Pelori mountain chain. It was made to counter Morgoth's possessiveness with rival possessiveness and thus it was somewhat selfish (even though the exact nature of the possessiveness was different). The Valar also let Morgoth roam free in Middle-Earth in that time, so the deed can be called neglectful as well.

Telchar 10-16-2001 01:26 AM

Vala and plural Valar is quenya, but what is the Sindarin equivelant?

Elrian 10-16-2001 07:07 PM

Belain, singular Balan?

Telchar 10-17-2001 01:21 AM

Why the sad face??? You are very much correct!

Elrian 10-17-2001 07:17 PM

I wasn't sure I was right when I posted it. I'll put on a new face.

Telchar 10-19-2001 07:51 AM

Wanna ask a new question Elrain ??

Elrian 10-22-2001 01:26 AM

It's the only one I can think of at the moment, so here goes:
Which of the Valar was best know for singing?

Telchar 10-23-2001 01:24 AM

Would that be Este???

Elrian 10-24-2001 04:13 PM

No, not Este.

Turambar 10-26-2001 11:20 AM

Manwë ?

Eldar14 10-26-2001 01:26 PM

I would say Melian, but she's a Maia.

Elrian 10-26-2001 08:41 PM

No, it wasn't Manwe or Melian. Good choices though.

Elenhin 10-27-2001 05:48 AM

Yavanna? (She made the Two Trees by singing, after all...)

Turambar 10-27-2001 07:07 AM

Didn't Tulkas do a good version of ""Hound Dog"?

Elrian 10-27-2001 09:22 PM

It was Yavannah.

Elrian 10-28-2001 09:12 PM

Your turn Elenhin!

Elenhin 10-29-2001 10:17 AM

What was the name of the steed of Orome?

Telchar 10-29-2001 10:21 AM

Nahar

Turambar 10-29-2001 03:14 PM

Btw, you're up in "Awakened Analogies", Telchar.

Telchar 10-30-2001 02:59 AM

Melkor and Manwe were brothers in the thought of Iluvatar, but who were the sister of the Feanturi?

Elenhin 10-30-2001 09:06 AM

Nienna.

Telchar 10-31-2001 02:22 AM

Correct - Go on Elenhin

Elenhin 10-31-2001 07:52 AM

Of whose folk was Tilion, steersman of the Moon?

Gwaihir the Windlord 10-31-2001 10:30 PM

Orome. the huntsman.

Elenhin 11-01-2001 01:38 PM

Yep, go on Gwaihir

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-01-2001 10:36 PM

Which wind was not asked for tidings in Gondor?

Telchar 11-02-2001 05:27 AM

Hi GtW - A: it was the eastwind and B: you're off the topic If Im right - you ask a new Valaquestion OK?

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-06-2001 10:28 PM

Ah. Sorry. Not quite up to date with the new format of the quiz room; first time I've posted here in half a year, after all.

Which Vala befriended the Noldor most intimately?

[ November 06, 2001: Message edited by: Gwaihir the Windlord ]

Telchar 11-07-2001 02:45 AM

Aulë

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-07-2001 10:33 PM

Go ahead.

Telchar 11-08-2001 02:17 AM

hmmm... Nienna is the sister of Irmo and Namo in the mind of Iluvatar. In earlier myth Nienna also had two brothers, but it was not the feanturi - who was it?

Elenhin 11-08-2001 05:29 PM

Manwe and Melko(r), if I recall correctly.
