I belong in Ithilien apparently, i'll be joining BW then

It's a great test, i've only seen one other, a pretty poor attempt, the results were only between Hobbiton, Bree, Rivendell, Moria and Lothlorien, maybe someone based it on the movie and hadn't read the books humm?

Davin 08-16-2002 02:37 PM

LOL! Do remember what site it was? I want to check it out.

Hey B-W...what about a Weapon Test? To find out what weapon from ME best suits me? I just don't really know how many questions you could ask...you're smart though, you could think of somethin

Sindacuion 08-16-2002 03:51 PM

*packs his bags and makes sure he has everything* Toothbrush - check. Comb - check..

Oh, yeah, I'm going to Rivendell. See you there!

PS. Does this mean I don't get to see the Lady Galadriel?

Mister Underhill 08-16-2002 07:33 PM

Apparently I'm Rivendell-bound, though I have a feeling those Elves will be getting under my skin right quick. Ithilien as a backup seems a wee bit dangerous for my tastes; maybe I can crash in Edoras in Kate's big mansion if "tra la la lally here down in the valley" doesn't work out for me.

Tarthang 08-16-2002 07:57 PM

It would appear, that I too, shall be joining the BW in Ithillien. After taking the test twice, Ithillien was at the top both times. Followed by Edoras twice, Mirkwood and Long Lake both once, for alternate abodes.

Bulelainwen 08-16-2002 08:22 PM

Melephelwen Ill be in Long lake so you wont be alone, errr......though im not sure if im a good neighbor

Melephelwen Ill be in Long lake so you wont be alone, errr......though im not sure if im a good neighbor

Ithaeliel 08-16-2002 08:46 PM

Goodbye, all ye Rivendellers, Edoras inhabitants, Ithilien dwellers and Lothlorienistics. I shall catch my flight to the Long Lake in a few minutes with Bulelainwen and Melephelwen.

Pff. Almost everyone got Rivendell, and only three have the Long Lake. We are unique! HA!

Maikadilwen 08-17-2002 01:20 AM

YOU'RE unique? I'm sitting here all alone on Mt. Doom. Sure nobody wants to join me for a BBQ? I'll be firing up the grill erh... mountain. I promise to be nice. I can do that, I know I can. Mr. underhill, you're more than welcome to visit me when those nasssty elves are beginning to wear on you.
Now, how on Middle Earth do I get Barad-dur? Except in a hostile take-over of course...?

Marileangorifurnimaluim 08-17-2002 02:09 AM

Maik, this is unrelated but I like your quote. Who said that?

Mr. U: "Ithilien as a backup seems a wee bit dangerous for my tastes."

Tsk. Tsk. Gentrification, gentrification. Ithilien is the up-and-coming neighborhood. Sure, everything's a fixer-upper and the neighbors can be a bit dodgy.. there's the occasional orc and Shelob's not accounted for.. but that's what gives The Ith (as insiders know it) its artsy edge. And places can be had for a song, at a fraction of the price of say one of Kate's mansions in Edoras, to say nothing of overpriced downtown Minas Tirith.

Alas! I got Rivendell.

Rose Cotton 08-17-2002 09:51 AM

BW, congratuations! This is a great and accurate test. I'm going to be living with Frodo_Baggins and ElanorGamgee in Hobbiton. But I'll be visiting Bree and Ithilien.

You know the test can also be worked in reverse. If you pick the answers that don't fit your personality you can figure out which places in Middle Earth you should avoid.

I tried it and I'm going to stear clear of Minas Morgul,Barad-dūr, and Isengard.

Try it. It's fun.

P.S. Welcome to the Downs Lady_Elf

Mister Underhill 08-17-2002 10:19 AM

Nice pitch, Maril -- you should be a Middle-earth realtor! You almost had me until I found out that it's impossible to get insurance that would cover the odd Mūmakil stampede. It would be just my luck to get a fixer-upper into decent shape only to have it crushed flat by iron-shod oliphaunts. Freeloading off of Elrond is looking better and better.

BTW, there's no need to get overly paranoid about occasional off-topic banter, comments, and questions. I think it's the threads that start off or veer off into swamps of complete and irretrievable off-topic-ness that we'd like to curtail.

P.S. - Rose, appreciate it if you'd take a few moments to chop that sig down to three lines or less. Thanks.

Alright hows this. I guess you've all memorized that poem anyway.

Though I think you still need to get this stuck in your heads.

Starbreeze 08-17-2002 10:47 AM

Well, I seem to be alone in Fangorn Forest *sighs* No one want to come and join me? Everyone is going to Rivendell and leaving me alone - oh well, I did select that I liked being on my own...
Maika, I might join you for the BBQ, it'll be a bit of a walk though, may I can catch a bus there?

Artilien 08-17-2002 12:13 PM

Hey Sind, nice that you're moving to Rivendell... I'm going to a holiday there I'll try to do something and make Galadriel come to Rivendell (I know, I live in Bree... but still... I also have some power ;P)

red 08-17-2002 08:16 PM

Would you believe I didn't get Rivendell?

Nevfeniel 08-17-2002 08:17 PM

I live in Ithilien, but I already knew that! (Note my location @ the bottom) *packs bags* Now what have I forgotten. . . (reference to Sam and his rope)

Duramarthiel 08-17-2002 08:32 PM

I'm moving to Mirkwood, but if I get bored off I go to Rivendell or Lothlorien!

Its so accurate, because elves totally kick butt.

the phantom 08-17-2002 09:27 PM

I got the same thing after BW made the correction. I'm going to join the throng in Rivendell! Lothlorien and Minas Tirith are very workable back up locations for me! Great test, BW! It's accurate for me anyway!

Marileangorifurnimaluim 08-18-2002 03:34 AM

Mr. U, heh. Yeah, I heard about that insurance problem, but we haven't had a Mumakil stampede in at least a week.

Gandalf took the realty job actually. Better hours than wizardry, flexible schedules, plus you get a free tote bag.

Daisy Sandybanks 08-18-2002 04:04 AM

Hmmm, well it looks as if I am off to Ithilien with a few other folks. Though all this mentioning of 'fixer-uppers' and such are worring me just a bit. I think I'll spend a week or two in Hobbiton and then drop by Bree on my way back to The Slums of Ithilien.

Nevfeniel 08-18-2002 07:22 AM

This is what my mom got:
Quote:

Based on your answers, you should settle in
Bree
It is the location that meets most of your preferences.

You would also probably like to live in
Ithilien
Rivendell
She complained that if she lived in Rivendell, she wouldn't see any hobbits. I reminded her of Bilbo, but she said she "might get tired of him."

The Barrow-Wight 08-18-2002 07:28 AM

red didn't get Rivendell!?!? The formula must be broken ! Or maybe she preferred sea and sun over mountains and rain?

Marileangorifurnimaluim 08-18-2002 10:13 AM

Get tired of Bilbo??? Dear me, that seems hardly likely. You just never know what's going to come out of the old chap's mouth. Startles Gandalf even. Yes, and on a regular basis, too.

red (or RED) - didn't get Rivendell?? What did you get, praytell? We can solve this mystery. I'm past master of slanting tests. I can get Frodo on any personality test, though if I'm honest I get Aragorn, or worse yet, Eowyn. The difference between Rivendell and Ithilien for example is to ask for warmer weather.

Maikadilwen 08-18-2002 11:02 AM

Heh, I asked for the warm weather... And I must say I certainly got it. Starbreeze, it seems you're the only one who has the stomach to come visit me in Mordor... *sniff*

LadyElbereth 08-18-2002 11:11 AM

Maikadilwen, i'll come visit you in Mordor too! Rivendell is getting way too crowded, too many ppl give me too many headaches! i think i need to go on a holiday, so see you soon!

Gandalf_theGrey 08-18-2002 11:17 AM

Oddly enough, I keep coming up with:

The Long Lake

followed by Bree and Rivendell.

No mention of the Grey Havens, from which to sail West ... nor of the Shire, though certainly I always find Rivendell in particular a most agreeable place whenever I pass through.

Gandalf the Grey

ArwenBaggins 08-18-2002 02:10 PM

Eruwen 08-18-2002 02:23 PM

Cool!!! I'm going to Hobbiton!!! But it also said I would like it in Bree and The Grey Havens. The Havens???? What is up with that? I think I'll stick with Hobbiton.

Elenna 08-19-2002 12:28 PM

I got Dol Amroth as my #1 choice.

Followed by Rivendell and the Long Lake.

And BW, I have also tried other location finders, but yours is by far the best. It has more locations than just Lorien, Rivendell, the Shire, Minas Tirith, and Mordor, like so many others are limited to.

Marileangorifurnimaluim 08-19-2002 02:59 PM

WARNING!
A heads up for folks looking for property - there's a shady character or two out there selling lots in Numenor, Gondolin and Doriath.

The post-Ring War expansion has created a ripe market for some of these schemes.

I realize it's a long haul to see some of these places, but please, please, please, at least check a map before purchasing! None of these realms will show up on the BW's locator, and that's a good clue.

I have a very upset Dunlander family on my hands who showed up on Hobbiton expecting to find Gondolin. Hobbit law does have recourse for such shams, but it only applies to Hobbits born within the Shire. (If you're a Brandybuck, take note.)

In most places the rule is CAVEAT EMPTOR, let the buyer beware, but here's a review of local laws.

Rohan:
You have rights to persue restitution under the law of Rohan if you "be of just character and goodly mien.."

Mostly it means you can behead anyone who cheats you, and the court of Rohan will figure out later if they like and agree with your complaint - a quick process. Since the person most likely to complain is already dead, it works out. A good system, though not likely to get your money back.

Gondor:
Has a byzantine and complex legal system applying to "all acts committed within the current and former boundaries of the realm(s) of Numenor; by citizens and visitors of such realm(s); and all descendants of the high race of men, born within and without the current and former realm(s) of Numenor.." Whew!

This pretty much means everyone and everywhere, given the reach of old Numenor (the men of Far Harad for example are still considered citizens of Numenor). I think it also applies to fish swimming above the former island of Numenor. So long as you're not a dwarf, hobbit or full-elf (the half-elven are covered under this law), even if you commit your crime in another country - evem if it was never part of the realms of Numenor at any time - you can appeal to Gondorian law. If your crime was committed in a former Gondorian territory, you are covered no matter what your race. This broad policy was enacted largely due to problems inherent in Elvish law (see below).

Sounds good, eh?

I don't recommend it. Not unless you have a lot of time, deep pockets, and a deep grudge.

This open policy has lead to a staggering backlog of cases. Graft has been reduced under King Elessar but still exists. I'm not sure that cracking down on the bribes was such a good idea, as this used to be the only way you could get a hearing in any decent amount of time. But whatever.

In the thousands of years of Gondor's existence, each king and steward passed a new set of laws, often with little regard to contradictions with previous laws. But due to Gondor's respect for tradition, these newer laws do not over-ride past law. In fact, the tendency is to respect older more out-of-date laws over the more recent (though this depends on the judge). This is a real problem when it comes to laws enacted by that wacko Ar-Pharazon, as any any animal rights activist in Gondor can tell you. The result of all this: there is law both for and against everything, and it takes a very good ($$$$$) lawyer to locate the laws and interpretation of such laws to suit your needs.

Fortunately, this only applies to civil law, and capital cases such as murder and treason are overseen personally by the King. Or Gondor would be a complete disaster.

By the way, for this reason do not apply Rohan-style criminal justice for civil offenses in Gondor. Your civil case will take forever, while their criminal case will be processed immediately. It brings little satisfaction to finally get your money back once you're exiled or in prison.

Shire law (though this culturally applies to any Hobbit population):
Most disputes in the Shire are solved "as between friends" or, if they are serious, in a meeting between the heads of each family.

Solicitors (as lawyers are called there, everything's different in the Shire) therefore have little to do outside of executing wills, marriage agreements and adoptions.

This has the unfortunate effect of your civil complaint being of great interest to any Hobbit Solicitor. They will draw out your case to its utmost length and complexity, including multiple hearings and personal meetings with the major, even if they are fully aware it is hopeless. This happened to my Dunland family. I wish they had come to me first.

Elvish law:
Elvish law is uniform for the High Elves from one Elvish country to another, and only slightly different in Mirkwood, subject to the vagaries of the current king. They have had plenty of time iron things out. Each case receives a personal, attentive and careful hearing by the head of that realm, Elrond or Galadriel as the case may be. It takes time, but given the wisdom of these ancient beings, the outcome is almost inevitably fair and well-considered. The problem is if you happen to be mortal. Elves are immortal, and time means nothing to them. Your hearing is likely to be 100-200 years in the future. (This is actually very wise, as the elves say most disputes given time will resolve themselves. In the case of mortals this is very true!) If you appeal, explaining you are mortal, it will be moved up to 20-30 years. They feel this is perfectly reasonable and will honestly not understand your impatience. While they will politely say they will consider moving it up sooner, there is no chance they will.

Dwarvish law:
Nobody really knows. There was some legal understanding between the dwarves of Moria and the Elves of that region, and currently between the men of Dale and the King under the Mountain. But there is little historical record of the 'Great Khazadum Accord,' and the agreement with Dale boils down to: "..if the crime is committed on dwarvish territory, we will handle it. Thank you."

Dwarvish law, for those who've run afoul of it, appears to be arbitrary. Dwarves hint that their system was set down by Durin however, and is unchanged from that day.

Reports are that dwarves have little respect for any fool who has been financially cheated, (their attitude - the careless and stupid get what they deserve), and rule accordingly.

Interesting note: connections with dwarves of high-standing have proven to be actually detrimental to ones case, as wealthy dwarves do not wish their reputations to be tarnished by their friends' stupidity.

Mordor:
While technically bound by the law of Gondor, this is a frontier town. The reality is the law of the sword. Bring a weapon to back up your point, buy nothing that you can't verify... and don't drink the water!

Good luck, and happy house hunting!

If you would like any assistance in purchasing real estate, please PM me.

Maikadilwen 08-19-2002 03:15 PM

I wonder who keeps spitting Dr. P. on my puter screen.... I noticed it happened quite a few times through Maril's post...

Well, I must say, I'm happy to live Mordor, since our laws... erh... WHAT laws??? Well, we just deal with such "things" in our own way. Why do you think my mountain burns so bright? Hey, what do you mean "don't drink the water"? Water's *hic* just fine.

Definitely not going to Elven country now... I'm really not that patient.
