Be nice, Phantom. Ye don't want to scare away all the nice newbies, do ye?

Hey Newbies! Welcome!

The dirt never really bothered me, probably I was distracted from the dirt because I'm so very ticklish. Drat those squirmy worms!

Nukapei 01-02-2005 07:57 PM

Bah, he doesn't scare us! After all, we're all "phantoms" here, right?

Truly, Phantom, is that really necessary?
It is if you're from the east coast. I just don't trust you people. :p

I guess not the "nice newbies".

But you know, I think we need somebody like me making semi-hostile remarks-> to counter all of the gushing welcomers-> :D around here.

Linnahiril Tinnufinwen 01-04-2005 02:39 PM

Hello, I'm also new. Well, I'm not exactly new...its just that I've been away for a long time. I hope that I'll be able to participate once more in discussions and such, although I must admit that I am far from a Tolkien expert. But I plan to improve my knowledge as much as possible.

Sapphire_Flame 01-04-2005 02:52 PM

Welcome, Linnahiril, or rather welcome back! *pokes*

You think that, phantom? I'll join you, though I don't have quite as sinister a reputation.... I can just warn them about how horrible their deaths will be.....

Encaitare 01-04-2005 09:38 PM

Welcome back, linna!

Gil-Galad -- Wait! I think I get it! No, that's just new age music... and I'm still oblivious. :p

Yes, newbies, first you shall unwittingly click on a link that says "Canonicity," upon which your brains shall immediately be melted.

Next, you shall be tempted to join an RPG. Pursue at your own risk.

And then, you shall get involved in a heated debate over some trivial point in LotR, only to realize that no one is ever going to agree, no matter how often you tell them that of course Balrogs don't have wings...

Someday, you may even get a personal title... and that's when you know that your soul belongs to the Barrow Downs.

Heh... don't mind me. Enjoy your slow, slow demises. :)

Ainaserkewen 01-05-2005 01:18 PM

I think I'd like to make a special mention to all members who are now joining in the futuristic year of 2005. This year will be on your prophile for the rest of your Downs-related vitural deaths so be proud. Also, happy New Year to all.

I'd also like to make another special welcome back to everyone who was away over the holidays or longer. If you or your family are very conventional about whatever holiday you celebrate, then all us you should know how difficult it is to receive internet time. So like I said, and I'm including myself in here because I couldn't find a piece of technology more advanced than a toaster over for the last two weeks, Welcome to the New Year of the Downs, may it be productive.

ancalemagill 01-05-2005 01:37 PM

hi

namarie my name is ancalemagill and I am 17 and A bit obsessed with elves, hobits ,wizards and valor .

elronds_daughter 01-05-2005 03:46 PM

Welcome, ancalemagill! Your stay here at the 'Downs should be enjoyable... That is, if you don't run into the phantom or cross The Barrow-Wight. (Mr. Barrow-Wight being the head dictator--um, I mean monarch--you don't want to get on his bad side....) And some of us coughcoughBoromir88andGil-Galadcoughcough have petty personal squabbles.... So, if you don't understand it, it's probably best not to.;)

All hail Comrade Wight who overthrew the monarch of the evil Queen of the white-backrounded forums.

Hi ancalemagill, out of curiousity, do you know what your name means? There's a good general question if we get short on Newbies to shower with attention.

If you happen to have an Elven name, either one you made up, were named, or got off the Name generator, do you know what it means?

Mine means Maiden of the Holy Blood. I had no idea when I chose it, but you know, I kind of like it.

Boromir88 01-05-2005 05:04 PM

Welcome to Tyrn Gorthad ancalemagill. Enjoy your stay here at the downs. :)

(Are you happy now miss elrond  :p )

Encaitare 01-05-2005 07:05 PM

Hello there, ancalemagill. Welcome, and be assured that we're all a tad obsessed as well. ;) :)

Nukapei 01-05-2005 07:25 PM

Oh, is that what you call it, obsession? Well . . . . . yeah, we're obsessed!

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-06-2005 08:32 AM

Hey everybody! I don't think I posted on this forum when I was a wee newbie, so you'll have to forgive me.

I'm Abercrombieofrohan (Duh!) and I'm from the USA. I like Lord of the Rings, obviously, Douglas Adams (Hitchiker's Guide series), Monty Python and most things to do with England. My brother told me to say "potatoes" and "42" which gives you a little bit of insight into my family life (very interesting).

The Barrow-downs has since become my day spa where I go to talk about all the important things in life. It's like a therapy group, it relaxes me.
:D

Thorongil 01-06-2005 08:34 AM

I'm almost back to noobyness. It's been a while since I logged on. How are y'all doing?

Nukapei 01-06-2005 12:38 PM

AbercrombieOfRohan, eh? Is that a spin-off of "Gap of Rohan", the oldest LotR joke in the book, that's oddly still funny? :D

AbercrombieOfRohan 01-06-2005 01:05 PM

yep it is. lol I try to be funny...

Nimrodel_9 01-06-2005 04:05 PM

Hello, ancalemagill! Wecome to the Barrow-Downs! Why be a bit obsessed? It`s more fun to go all the way! Anyway, enjoy walking among the dead. I hope we will seem more lively than the living. ;)

Finwe-89 01-06-2005 04:20 PM

Welcome!
It's cool to be a dead dude, but now I'm a animated skeleton *yawn* I hope you're going to enjoy Barrows!

Formendacil 01-06-2005 04:27 PM

A new member tests the icy waters of the Barrow-downs...

Greetings everyone.

I am a new member of the Barrow-downs (well, duh! you say...) who has been a Tolkien fanatic for something like 7 years, although I'm not quite sure how long. Well before Peter Jackson had even been heard of, anyway.

I've known ABOUT the Barrow-downs for quite some time, but it was only in a fit of compulsive boredom (blissful stuff, when you can get it), that I decided to join a LR fan site. That's right, I wrote LR, not LOTR. I never heard of LOTR until the movies came out, and as a backwards nobody who doesn't really appreciate what Peter Jackson did to the world of middle-earth, great as the movies were, I make a point of not using LOTR, besides which I think its an ugly-looking acronym.

Anyways, more about me that neither bores nor offends, and yet informs you about me...

I have read the Lord of the Rings more times than I can count. I prefer the Silmarillion to the LR in most moods, and I have read it at least as many times. The History of Middle-Earth continues to fascinate me, and I am an avowed fan of the Appendices. I read the Fellowship out loud to a friend (and enjoyed it more than he/they did), during one remarkable camping trip. The most fascinating writings of our beloved and dead J.R.R. Tolkien are quite possibly the Letter.

Those are my credentials, here are my downsides...

In a fit of Junior High nonsense, I had the audacity to write about a novel's worth of drivel set in middle-earth in the Fourth Age, which was not only rather poorly written, but also inaccurate in more ways than I can count to boot. If nothing else, it gave me a bit of practise at writing.

In not-quite-related-to-middle-earth news, I am 17 (just about 18) years old, a LEGO fan/builder (see my website for my Silmarillion LEGO figs. I am (like Tolkien) a practising Catholic, heavily involved in my local Youth Group.

Normally, I don't even consider browsing Tolkien-related message boards, but as I said, I was fortunate to find myself endowed with an unusual length of spare time this afternoon (blame it on the snowstorm, if you like), and my typical website stops weren't enough to keep me occupied.

Having said that, I hope that this experience proves to be rewarding, or at least not detrimental. I wouldn't expect me to be a hugely active user here (got LEGO forums for that, if I need them), but I'll be sure to weigh in on book-related topics with regularity, to avoid the movie-topics for fear of lynching, and to visit elsewhere if the mood ever strikes....

Anyways, that's me....

Sorta. Not quite. In a way...

Boromir88 01-06-2005 04:35 PM

Welcome to Tyrn Gorthad formendacil, hope to see you around the forums :) .

elronds_daughter 01-06-2005 04:39 PM

Welcome to the 'Downs, Formandacil! (By the way, I like you signature... Proverbs is just chock full of nuggets like that, isn't it?)

Finwe-89 01-06-2005 04:42 PM

Welcome Formendacil

I hope you enjoy these forums like the most people around here! Hope to see you around soon

Formendacil 01-06-2005 04:51 PM

Thanks for the welcome, Boromir, Elrond's Daughter, and Finwe. I think I might already be hooked on the place...

So I have found. I guess they don't call it Proverbs for nothing.

True, true.

Nimrodel_9 01-06-2005 05:26 PM

Welcome to the Downs, formendacil! That has to be the longest newbie post I`ve ever seen... My compliments to you! :D

Nukapei 01-06-2005 05:38 PM

It was certainly longer than mine! (Which was basically "Hi, I'm new.") Welcome to the Downs, Formandacil, and I hope you enjoy the book forums, if nothing else. I know I do.

Formendacil 01-06-2005 09:49 PM

Thank you Nukapei and Nimrodel for the welcome- and for noting my verbosity.

This may be the first Tolkien-related forum I've joined, but I've got accounts elsewhere. I much prefer to go to a thread that has been added to and find something to read that is entertaining and/or thought-provoking. Not that the all-too-common "Yeah, right" "I agree" "Hey that's cool" posts are bad, because it IS good to get a feel for what the general consensus is, but simply that I do my best (not always successfully) to make my own posts interesting, or at least long enough that it takes you longer to read it than to click "Back".

Encaitare 01-07-2005 11:34 AM

Welcome, Formendacil. Hope to see you haunting about.

And a formal welcome to Abercrombie as well.

Witch_King 01-07-2005 02:26 PM

Hi there folks. I'm Martin, I'm a big LOTR fan, but know the movies better than books though.

I had registered before as King_Elessar, and either it's been deleted and someone else has registered with it or it's still mine and I've just forgotten my password. I had a look at some of the member's posts, and I think I wrote something about the obviousness of Legolas saying "A diversion" in ROTK, and I think that was my signature, but the posts like "ooh Aragorn is nice but legolas is nicer ooh" doesn't sound like me :p

Anyway, hello again!

Encaitare 01-07-2005 02:29 PM

Welcome back, Witch_King. I think I know what happened: Legolas, in a fit of rage over being teased about his no-brainer lines, hacked into your computer, found out your password, and then proceeded to inform everyone on the site how great he is. ;)

Boromir88 01-07-2005 02:51 PM

Welcome back Witch_King. :)

Nukapei 01-07-2005 03:53 PM

Good theory, Encaitare. Either that, or he was framed by Aragorn. At any rate, welcome (back), Witch_King, and I hope your (new) death will be as pleasant as your first, but a little more Elf-free! :D

Finwe-89 01-08-2005 08:44 AM

Welcome back Witch_King

Hope you'll enjoy the forums (again) :P

elronds_daughter 01-08-2005 10:48 AM

Welcome (back) Witch_King! Your stay should be enjoyable, as long as the elf-princeling doesn't hack into your computer again ;)

Gil-Galad 01-08-2005 12:24 PM

aye, welcome back formerly known as King_Elessar

Lolidir 01-08-2005 11:28 PM

hello there

hey every one,

i must say i am new to the whole forum thing, but i am not new to the LOTR world so to speak. i have read the books once but a lot of people dont believe me bc i can recall a lot of information and sometimes its a lot of pointless information that only a fanatic would know. know i dont want to bost here bc i know that prolly everyone here know more than i do, mainly bc i have read anything other than the triogy and the hobbit. i do plan on it, but as some others i am also in school. i am a junior in highschool.

heres an interesting story. i got in trouble in english class my freshman year for not paying attention. any one know what i was doing? i was reading TTT. and on top of that when the teacher took the book away the book mark fell out and i said "thanks for loosing my place" in a not so nice tone. well thats just how dedicated i am i guess. i put my own safety on the line for LOTR. paving the way for all those new comers out there i guess.

well i have prolly bored half of you to sleep and the other half have prolly left so will say adios for the time being and i hope to hear from some of you in the future wether it be an IM or PM or maybe a reply to something i wrote. hope to read you soon.

elronds_daughter 01-09-2005 05:29 PM

Welcome to the 'Downs, Lolidir! 'Dedicated', you say, eh? I prefer to name it 'obsession'. Ah, well. Enjoy your death!
