hmmmm - Dargor Aglareb was the third and not the second of the great battles of Beleriand. Dargor-nuin-Giliath (The Battle under the Stars) was the second...

From SILM:

Quote:

But the host of Morgoth, aroused by the tumult of Lam-moth and the light of the burning at Losgar, came through the passes of Ered Wethrin, the Mountains of Shadow, and assailed Fëanor on a sudden, before his camp was full-wrought or put in defence; and there on the grey fields of Mithrim was fought the Second Battle in the Wars of Beleriand. Dagor-nuin-Giliath it is named, the Battle-under-Stars, for the Moon had not yet risen

how stupid of me! well, I've been mixing them up before...
You are the one to ask, Telchar!

Telchar 10-10-2002 12:50 PM

What Battle was fought on January 23-25 - 3019 - Third Age?

lathspell 10-10-2002 02:20 PM

How on earth did you ever think of that?

it is the battle between the Balrog and Gandalf

greetings,
lathspell

P.S.: the next question, quite easy, is: what is the last battle fought in LotR?

Telchar 10-11-2002 12:21 AM

The Battle of Bywater ?
and by the way, the battle between Gandalf and the Balrog lasts from January 15 where they both fall from the destruction of the bridge. They enter the summit of Zirak-Zigil on January 23 and on the 25th Gandalf casts down his foe. (All dates from The Tale of Years in the appendix) So the Battle in question in very specific and has a name: The Battle of the Peak

Gandalf telling in 'The White Rider, TTT':
Quote:

The sun shone fiercely there, but all below was wrapped in cloud. Out he sprang, and even as I came behind, he burst into new flame. There was none to see, or perhaps in after ages songs would still be sung of the Battle of the Peak.

I see. Well, your answer is good anyway, so please ask another.

Telchar 10-12-2002 08:12 AM

Easy one: In what battle was Fingolfin killed?

Childlike Empress 10-12-2002 01:05 PM

Ha, a trick question!
'Twas no battle, but a duel with Morgoth

Telchar 10-12-2002 04:30 PM

hehe - right and wrong - I was actually looking for the name of the battle wherein the duel took place ... name it and its all yours

Childlike Empress 10-12-2002 05:33 PM

Then that would be the fourth Battle for Control of Beleriand: Dagor Bragolach, the Battle of Sudden Flame

Telchar 10-13-2002 06:04 AM

Perfect Childlike Empress - Go on...

Childlike Empress 10-14-2002 02:19 AM

Tell me the fate of each Dwarf in the Quest for Erebor. (I figure this is ok because they were in the Battle of Five Armies, in which some died) You can add Bilbo's fate if you really want to, but don't have to, since we all know what happened to him. Ditto Gandalf. heehehe

lathspell 10-14-2002 09:58 AM

If you mean what was their fate in the time of LotR:

- Thorin: died in the Battle of the Five Armies
- Dwalin: alive
- Balin: dead as Lord of Moria
- Oin: taken by the Watcher in the Water
- Gloin: alive, meeting Frodo in Rivendell
- Ori: dead, probably in moria
- Nori: alive
- Dori: alive
- Bifur: alive
- Bofur: alive
- Bombur: alive, being so fat that it takes six young dwarves to lift him
- Fili: died protecting Thorin in the Battle of the Five Armies
- Kili: died protecting Thorin in the Battle of the Five Armies

I believe I've got them all now
I think you meant this... anyway, I can answer later again

greetings,
lathspell

Childlike Empress 10-14-2002 06:55 PM

Yes, that's what I meant

lathspell 10-15-2002 04:59 AM

alright

who invented Golf and in what Battle did that happen?

Eruhen 10-15-2002 09:14 AM

I'm fairly sure that the Bullroarer (Brandobras Took) invented golf when he knocked off Golfimbul the Orc's head in the Battle of Greenfields in T.A. 2747, S.R. 1147.

lathspell 10-16-2002 06:56 AM

Correct in all ways, Eruhen!

Please go on!

greetings,
lathspell

Eruhen 10-16-2002 10:01 AM

It help to have FotR next to the computer when you answer these questions! Anyway...

When was the battle of Eriador, and who were the participants?

lathspell 10-19-2002 01:59 AM

I couldn't find this Battle anywhere! DO you mean when Sauron overrun Eriador in 1700 S.A.?

Eruhen 10-21-2002 09:56 AM

I'm sorry, that's it. I didn't have RotK with me when I posted that. Go ahead.

lathspell 10-22-2002 02:32 AM

In what Battle did Eorl the Young die and in what year did that happen?

greetings,
lathspell

Telchar 10-23-2002 02:27 AM

hmm... I know he died in battle with Easterlings in/on The Wold in TA2545, but I can remember the name of the battle. Maybe as simple as 'The battle of The Wold' ?

Elfhelm 02-28-2003 11:38 PM

Well, I wish to resurrect this thread.

In what battle was Marhari slain?

Faenaduial 02-28-2003 11:43 PM

He was slain in the Battle of the Plains.

Elfhelm 02-28-2003 11:46 PM

Muy bien! Ask away.

Faenaduial 02-28-2003 11:51 PM

In what battle was Artamir slain and who was he?

Tar-Palantir 03-01-2003 12:03 AM

tricksy one - using Unfinished Tales...

Artamir was an heir to the throne of Gondor. He was slain in the battle with the wainriders. His father and younger brother Faramir both died there also, leaving no direct heir to the throne.

Faenaduial 03-01-2003 12:18 AM

Very good. Your turn.

Tar-Palantir 03-01-2003 01:52 AM

Great.

What battle last for 50 years?

Bonus points: what prize was recovered and by whom?

Pallando B.C 03-03-2003 04:30 PM

The Last Alliance before Mount Doom?

Tar-Palantir 03-03-2003 05:00 PM

No, 'twas not in the Second Age.

Faenaduial 03-03-2003 05:11 PM

Were they the Battles of Beleriand?

Beren87 03-03-2003 05:17 PM

The "Battles of Beleriand" were 5 different battles in the War of Beleriand. It wasn't one battle.

Tar-Palantir 03-03-2003 05:29 PM

No, but Beleriand was affected.

edit- gravely affected...

Faenaduial 03-03-2003 05:32 PM

I realize that, I just can't remember any of the battles lasting 50 years. I thought maybe they were being combined to span a period of time.

the real findorfin 03-04-2003 12:34 PM

The War of Dwarves and Orcs?

Tar-Palantir 03-04-2003 02:07 PM

Well it was actually a bit less than 50 years, I am sorry for not double checking first.

The War of Wrath is the answer, approx. 42 years in length, ending with the destruction of Beleriand at the end of the First Age.

Feel free to take it whoever would like!!

Faenaduial 03-05-2003 11:44 AM

Thanks Tar, that was a real stumper. Since we couldn't get it how about posting another!

Tar-Palantir 03-05-2003 01:35 PM

Ok,

In the Dagor Dagorath:
- who will be the enemy??
- what 3 will lead charge against him??
- and who will deliver the killing stroke??
