Guinevere 11-26-2004 12:56 PM

It is Gandalf talking to Frodo and Gimli about Dain's death:
"I should call that a heavy loss, if it was not a wonder rather that in his great age he could still wield his axe as mightily..."

luthien-elvenprincess 11-26-2004 07:59 PM

Excellanto, Guinevere :)

Guinevere 11-27-2004 03:31 PM

luthien-elvenprincess 04-30-2005 05:45 AM

Correct Elf-Warrier. Thankfully, I still had the bookmark left in place...I had forgotten the answer and would have had to search for it!
Good job...your turn.

The Elf-warrior 04-30-2005 06:12 PM

"Call them so, if you will,"

The Elf-warrior 08-24-2005 06:36 PM

Anybody want to take a stab at it?

Lostgaeriel 08-25-2005 01:02 AM

This is Thorin Oakenshield to Gandalf, referring to his so-called "halls".

Quote:

Gandalf looked at him with wonder. 'That is strange, Thorin Oakenshield ,' he said. 'For I have thought of you also; and though I am on my way to the Shire, it was in my mind that is the way also to your halls.'

'Call them so, if you will,' said Thorin. 'They are only poor lodgings in exile. But you would be welcome there, if you would come. For they say that you are wise and know more than any other of what goes on in the world; and I have much on my mind and would be glad of your counsel.'
- tLotR, Appendix A, III Durin's Folk

The Elf-warrior 08-25-2005 09:37 PM

Correct! Your turn now!

Lostgaeriel 08-30-2005 09:19 AM

Sorry for the delay.

Quote:

'But great Kings take what is their right,' he said.

Hiriel 09-01-2005 02:33 PM

I believe that was Sauron to Ar-Pharazon in Appendix A.

Quote:

And Sauron lied to the King, declaring that everlasting life would be his who possessed the Undying Lands, and that the Ban was imposed only to prevent the Kings of Men from surpassing the Valar. 'But great Kings take what is their right,' he said. - Sauron to Ar-Pharazon

Lostgaeriel 09-01-2005 05:39 PM

Yes, Hiriel, you are correct. And thanks for taking the time to type out the quote in context so everyone can find it.

I like this quote - I find it mildly amusing that an Age later, a great King does take what is his right and helps to destroy Sauron in the bargain:

Quote:

'You forget to whom you speak,' said Aragorn sternly, and his eyes glinted. 'Did I not openly proclaim my title before the doors of Edoras? What do you fear that I should say to him? Nay, Gimli,' he said in a softer voice, and the grimness left his face, and he looked like one who has laboured in sleepless pain for many nights. 'Nay, my friends, I am the lawful master of the Stone, and I had both the right and the strength to use it, or so I judged. The right cannot be doubted. The strength was enough – barely.'
tRotK, The Passing of the Grey Company

Your turn! Good luck - there's not a lot of dialogue in the Appendices to choose from.

Hiriel 09-01-2005 06:54 PM

De nada. And yes indeed, the parallel is very interesting and ironic. I hadn't noticed that before.
Herm, well, here it goes:

Quote:

But it needs gold to breed gold.

Eonwe 09-03-2005 08:55 PM

Thror to Thrain, i believe.
Quote:

This may prove the foundation of new fortune for you yet, though that seems unlikely. But it needs gold to breed gold.

Hiriel 09-03-2005 09:35 PM

Yes, that's exactly right. Well done. :)

Eonwe 09-04-2005 05:50 AM

Ok here we go:
Quote:

"I will await you."
have fun :)

Hiriel 09-04-2005 10:59 AM

That would be Cirdan, after presenting Gandalf the ring of fire.

Quote:

"But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails. I will await you."

Eonwe 09-04-2005 11:09 AM

nicely done. take it away, Hiriel.

Hiriel 09-04-2005 05:59 PM

Thankee. Here's the next one:

Quote:

"You owe me a great wereguild..."

Eonwe 09-06-2005 04:30 PM

taht would be eorl to felarof

Quote:

But now you owe me a great weregild, and you shall surrender your freedom to me until your life's end.

Hiriel 09-07-2005 09:15 PM

Yes indeed. Your go. :)

Eonwe 09-08-2005 03:21 PM

ok here goes.
