From Werewolf...

The Seer dreamed of wolves. = we move the dress of leader.

The Seer found the leader was a wolf in sheeps clothing? (It's a stretch.)

The Hunter got a wolf. = Flunt, he goeth to war.

Guess the hunter was Flunt.

The wolves win! = The W's now live!

Everone knows that W stands for wolf.

Middle Earth Mirth = hitler mirth me add
This illustrates the sadistic side of Downers' humor.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum =switchboards furrows mound noise
Obviously it means the interesting thought that is provoked by BDer communication, at least if one has dial-up.

Valesse 11-09-2005 09:02 PM

I wasn't going to post until I knew what Bb's original quote was she took from, but I don't want to let this one go, as it points out how one of our fellow downers came into being:

Firefoot blazes into the spotlight, here, with a highly illregular (just like the 'downs) Latin phrase: fiet foro. What does that mean, you say? Together, most literally "I was made by the forum".

Children of Eru, meet the Child of Wights.

Rune Son of Bjarne 11-18-2005 08:07 PM

Iron Hills is really a shrill ion
Who should have known that atoms could produce a high-pitched sound

Imlad Morgul is a symbol of Tolkien's anti-mao'istic thoughts: dull grim mao

Tumladen is just a word for mute land- Fitting don't you think ?

Morai 11-19-2005 12:16 PM

fundamentals headed grim =Middle Earth Fun and Games.
Obviously the dark side of BDer humor.

vetoes him =The Movies.
The attitude of many BDers towards Peter Jackson and his interpretation of LOTR.

newcomers connive ads= Novices and Newcomers.
The impulsiveness of many newcomers to our forum to splatter the discussion with on topic/ off topic advertisements.

Okay, so the last one wasn't that clever. At least I tried....

Gurthang = gag hunt'r
I abuse gags! I'm so sorry!

mormegil = lime morg
A place of the dead that takes on a sour green tint.

Anguirel = Ariel gun (sp)
Always looking up, and shooting that way, too.

Formendacil = For men, dial 'C'
All along he's been an add for a dating service!

Kitanna = A tin kan
???(I got nothin'.)

Alcarillo 12-03-2005 03:33 PM

Alas! The Barrow-Downers' true names can be discovered through the power of anagrams!

Folwren's name is Ren Wolf. It's surprising that she isn't lynched more often.

The Squatter of Amon Rhudh is in reality HM (His Majesty) Hudson F Quartet-O'Harte. Who knew we had royalty in our midst?

The Barrow-Wight is Theo W Warbright, and Bęthberry's name is the deceptively obvious Beth Berry.

THE Ka, or Kate H, always uses her last initial rather than her full surname.

And to finish, I must reveal my true identity as Al Carillo.

Glirdan 12-03-2005 04:02 PM

Gurthang becomes Than Rug G
Wow, someone like carpets a little to much.

Morai becomes Ai, mor!
Sounds a little spanish to me.

and lastly,

Glirdan becomes Ran gild
What dirty little secrets am I hiding? :p

Gurthang 12-12-2005 11:01 AM

Who or what is Tom Bombadil?

Well, I think the answer quite obvious, for his name tells all:

Tom Bombadil = Idl[e] atom bomb.

Well, he's certainly caused an explosion in Fordim's poll.

mormegil 12-12-2005 11:34 AM

Tol-in-Gaurhoth give us either a guilt or honor hat to wear. Which is rather true.

Aiwendil 12-12-2005 02:07 PM

It's time to reveal the truth about this site.

The Barrow-downs discussion forum is really a front for a nuclear physicists' gambling ring:

"Much odd, sour, or raw fission won bets".

What do they wager? The site advertises Members list, or:

"bet elms' rims"

(or is that a demented Gollum saying "Mm, blisterses"?)

When the nuclear physicists are criticized for the gambling, they blame another department, saying "Active Topics" or:

"vice at optics!"

There are those that have tried to stop the depravity, but they are Novices and Newcomers who don't know that:

"No downer can mess vice".

And one of the most infamous threads offers a piece of sordid advice: Canonicity: the book or the reader? or:

"the contradictory bookie - he earn!"

And, like other gambling havens, the Downs draws a healthy crowd with the lure of gambling: Translations from the Elvish or

"Reservations - half month list".

Arrows 'nd Bows= borrows dawns. Take from it what you will, but I thought it was a rather poetic description of this thread.

How Do You Imagine Other Bders?=intermediary show dough oboe. A wacky guess helps end an argument over how a certain Bder looks and acts in 'real' life.

This is not off-topic, I assure you.

What happened in the Hobbit Survivor? What do the contestants say?

Thorin: "Votive rubbish!"

Ah, well...

In the end, Bullroarer and Gloin lost. Well, what were they but a Strolling Bore and Dull Aaron, anyway?

However, the Dragon wins which is now grand.

ps. Or: "Fine win, ugly gnat pillowcase roundup ends in a fandango." ;)

Nilpaurion Felagund 02-22-2006 07:03 PM

Whoops.

There were a lot of extra letters there. Three, to be exact.

Ah, well.

It seems John Ronald Ruel Tolkien is playing an odd Dwarvish dice game in which, someone claims...

"John, I’ll Rol a ‘De’ Rune... NOT!"

Rikae 09-17-2006 07:32 PM

Anagrams

It's almost creepy how some of them fit...and others are funny simply because they make no sense at all.

This might not wound really good but I think that Gandalf would equate to *** Land, which I really felt he was a part of in the beginning of my quest through LOTR.

Great thread none the less, even if there is not much worth into thinking of anagrams for character names, a good way to alleviate the felling still.

Galadriel55 08-31-2012 03:35 PM
