Per Mr. Greenbow:
Stacey, I can't believe you are letting Sam spend all your money, They must be very good seeds!
LOL--well, they were just your "garden variety" (pardon the pun, couldn't resist), but he was right, they WERE a good price (and a very SMALL fraction of the money I had, really. )
Quote:

Sam stood by him, his round eyes wide open - for he was looking across lands he had never seen to a new horizon.

Is it Marriage?
Nope. Nor is it a church building. Though people certianly do shun those, don't they?
Quote:

Sam had a natural mistrust of the inhabitants of other parts of the Shire; and also he was not disposed to be quick friends with anyone who had beaten his master, however long ago.

Samwise 03-30-2002 02:36 PM

OH! OH! *Jumps up and down, raising hand in the air* The answer to Starbreezes' is NINE!

Starbreeze 03-30-2002 02:45 PM

Well done Samwise! I was beginning to wonder if anyone would get it, I personally thought it was too easy for people of your caliber...oh well, seems I was mistaken.

Samwise 03-30-2002 02:59 PM

Brain Teasers, Riddles...something of the same thing, when you think about it. Good one, Starbreeze!

Kalimac 03-30-2002 07:07 PM

Starbreeze - d'oh. That's me, always taking the complicated way round and failing to notice the straight way just in front of me.

Samwise - string, or nothing!! Are you going to tell us the answer if nobody gets it after a few more days? . And speaking of church buildings - happy Easter! (It's a few hours early, but I'm going to an Easter vigil in a bit so technically this should be OK).

Kalimac 03-30-2002 07:08 PM

Hooray, at long last I'm a shade!

Samwise 03-30-2002 07:18 PM

And a very happy Easter to you, too, Kalimac!
Yes, if no one gets it after a few days, I'll tell you folks.
(I just can't believe my little brain thought up one to stump you guys, though... ).
Let's see, clue #2...
(which may or may not be a giveaway)
The folks who shun this usually do so on a Friday.
Quote:

Sam had begged to be allowed to wait on his master, but had been told that for this time he was a guest of honour.

Samwise 03-30-2002 07:20 PM

Oh, and congrats, Kalimac!

Kalimac 03-30-2002 07:26 PM

Samwise - meat! Is it meat?

Raefindel 03-30-2002 08:33 PM

Samwise, do you have someone with you adding to your posts, are you schtizophrenic or is your name Stacy? You are confusing the heck out of me!

Samwise 03-30-2002 08:56 PM

Sorry, Kalimac, no.
LOL, Rae--sorry. Yes, my name is Stacey. Talking back and forth between myself and my character was a habit I developed on another board...oddly enough, the character was Sam.

Sam: Character?? And what do you mean by that?

Stacey:
Quote:

*Frodo and Sam walking across a feild*
*Sam stops*
*Frodo turns* "Sam, what's the matter? "
*Sam* "If I take another step, I'll be farther from home than I've ever been."

Raefindel 03-30-2002 08:59 PM

ooOOOoohh, so you ARE schitzophrenic!

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:02 PM

Clue #3: The answer has to do with some events that happened after ROTK ends....at least, I don't think think they happen 'til after ROTK ends...and I'm not going to spoil it and look, 'cause I'm only barely done with FOTR.
Quote:

"There must have been a mighty crowd of dwarves here at one time," said Sam; "and every one of them busier than badgers for five hundred years to make al this, and most in hard rock, too! What did they do it all for? They didn't live in these darksome holes, surely? "

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:04 PM

Well, I'm never gonna get Samwise's riddle, so maybe it's time we had another .

What force and strength cannot get through
I with a gentle touch can do.
And many in the street would stand
were I not a friend at hand.

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:09 PM

Stacey:LOL, Rae....I believe the term is "split personality".

Sam: Split? *looks at her* Miss Stacey, y' look 's whole 's anything to me..."

Stacey: *Well, at least he's a cute little thing...* *I've got to be nice to him, too, 'cause we just read the part where he lost Bill and he got all weepy....*
Quote:

Sam, clinging to Frodo's arm, collapsed on a step in the black darkness. "Poor old Bill!" he said in a choking voice, "Poor old Bill! Wolves and snakes! But the snakes were too much for him. I had to choose, Mr. Frodo. I had to come with you."

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:12 PM

You're reading the Trilogy for the first time?

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:13 PM

Oh, well. I'll tell you folks on Monday.
Quote:

Sam stood sullenly by the pony and returned no answer. Bill, seeming to understand well what was going on, nuzzled up to him, putting his nose to Sam's ear. Sam burst into tears, and fumbled with the straps, unloading all the pony's packs and throwing them on the ground.

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:17 PM

No Fair! No Fair! I'm going on vacation Monday! Booo Hooo Hooo!

I'll miss you Samwise! In fact, I'll miss everybody! and will probably suffer withdrawal from lack of Barrow-downs exposure!

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:18 PM

No, Rae, the second. The first time I read it, though, was roughly 19 years ago, and I'm finding I remember VERY little.
Quote:

At that moment from far off the wind bore to thier ears the howling of wolves. Bill the pony started in fear, and Sam sprang to his side and whispered softly to him.

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:20 PM

We must be close to the same age. The first time I read it was 22 years ago.

Did you get your Sam statue you ordered?

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:20 PM

Oh.....when are you coming back?

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:21 PM

Thursday

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:23 PM

Hm...well, maybe I can save the answer 'til then....no one here knows were I live.
No, It's not supposed to come (be shipped?) 'til April, which isn't too far away, fortunately....

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:26 PM

I'm 31. I first read LOTR in Jr. High.
Quote:

"He'd follow Mr. Frodo into a dragon's den, if I led him." protested Sam.

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:26 PM

Gee Wiz Samwise, that was your 600th post!

(Raefindel orders fireworks for the occasion)

Wow! I wasn't even watching!
Quote:

"What did I tell you, Mr. Pippin?" said Sam, sheathing his sword. "Wolves won't get him. That was an eye-opener, and no mistake! Nearly singed the hair off my head! "

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:31 PM

Wow! You are quick with those quotes! do you have the whole trilogy marked with a highlighter like your Bible?

[ March 30, 2002: Message edited by: Raefindel ]

LOL! Actually, as I read, I've written them down, and I have a file full of them. Your post led me to dig up that one. You can kind of tell how far I am in the book from my latest quote.
Quote:

"But you can't leave poor old Bill behind in this forsaken place, Mr. Gandalf!" cried Sam, angry and distressed. "I won't have it, and that's flat. After he has come so far and all! "
Well, I take that back. They're sort of mixed up, and some are off this board from places I haven't read to yet. Okay, scratch that.

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:41 PM

.....and actually, I don't think I've ever used a highlighter in my Bible--at least, not my newer one. My thing is to mark little notes in the margins everywhere.

Well, Everyone, Have a Wonderful Easter. God Bless!

Kalimac 03-30-2002 09:43 PM

Raefindel, is the answer to yours a key?

Samwise, I was almost expecting you to tell me "the answer isn't a kettle boiling over" because I'm *really* trying to figure that one out and can't come up with anything that fits perfectly . I'll stick with "string, or nothing!"

And I'm starting to feel embarrassingly young; I first read LOTR 12 years ago, and I was still young enough then that my father was reading it aloud to me and two of my brothers for a bedtime story (well I remember when we finished the "Flight to the Ford" chapter where at the end Frodo sees the Nazgul starting across the ford and then collapses into unconsciousness. My dad then closed the book: "OK, time to go to sleep." We protested loudly until he consented to read the first page of the next chapter, so we could see that Frodo was not, in fact, captured by Ringwraiths).

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:43 PM

And the same to you, Rae!

Thank You!

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:46 PM

LOL, Kalimac! Boy, I'm beginning to feel embarassingly old....

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:50 PM

Wait a sec.....LOTR for a bedtime story!?!? Yike--I hope your dad didn't read you the part about the Dead Marshes before you went to sleep....

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:51 PM

Give that Elf a cigar! (I doubt she'd take one) Good job Kalimac! A key it is!

Samwise 03-30-2002 09:52 PM

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:52 PM

Oh, you're a hobbit aren't you? Sorry about that! Your turn.

Raefindel 03-30-2002 09:55 PM

ok , just so we keep within the spirit of the thread, let's all tell our ages as a math riddle...lol
