Tarien Ithil 08-02-2003 12:16 PM

Imladris has such a lovely feel to it.

Shire Flower 08-02-2003 06:43 PM

I like Legolas Greenleaf (because it sounds so woodsy) and Merry and Pippin (because they sound so happy and British). The name Withywindle also strikes my fancy... It looks so funny and sort of reminds me of a Lewis Carroll poem.

Lord of Angmar 08-02-2003 07:11 PM

My favorite names are Hithlum and Nan Dungortheb, because I can almost visualize the place when I say the names.

Hithlum sounds misty and wet, very hilly and green with oft grey skies and beautiful summers and springs.

Nan Dungortheb sounds very dark and dirty. I always imagine crags and spikes of rock and many dark passageways and shadowy corners.

dancing spawn of ungoliant 08-03-2003 07:24 AM

This is hard, I can't just say one name that is my favourite. Tinúviel is though something so beautiful...and so is Caras Galadhon. Almost everything that is in Sindarin or Quenya is beautiful.

elfearz1 08-03-2003 06:59 PM

good topic! There are a lot of great names, some of my favourite are: Eowyn, Nienna, Yavannah, Lothlorien, Tinuviel, Dunharrow, Nimrodel, Mirkwood, Frodo, Pippin just to name a few. I'll name more later. I'm having a bit of a problem here.

Novberaid 08-03-2003 07:40 PM

My favorite has to be Cuivienen. "firstborn
or the Children of Iluvatar - awoke by the
waters of Cuivienen."

Amarantha_Daisy 08-03-2003 11:37 PM

-Amarantha, obviously, is one of my favorites. I just found out there is an actual character named Amaranth (one of Frodo's aunts, I believe) but I like the 'a' at the end.

-Osgiliath...soooo fun to say

-Elessar (fairly popular, I see?)

-Elbereth Gilthoniel (fun to recite, too)

-Sauron is fun to say just for the 'au' sound

Pretty much anything in Elvish is fun to say... Dwarf stuff, too. I mean, just say Khazad-dum and you know what I'm talking about. Yeah...there's tons of them!

I love Tolkien's languages, he was really good at making things sound perfect. Well, most things, at least. I really don't like the name Gandalf. But maybe that's just me. Oh, well, he's got lot's of other names, hasn't he.

Lady Snickerdoodle 10-25-2003 08:30 PM

~*LEGOLAS*~ even though the nickname would be Leg, or Lassie... oh thats actually kind of funny...
I also like Galadriel, the way Cate Blanchett says it in FOTR is so cool. And Eowyn. does that have an accent on the e?

Princess Of DolAmroth 10-26-2003 01:54 PM

You've all given wonderful examples of some of the most interesting or beuatiful names Tolkien gave his charecters, but I thought I might just add a few of my favorites too! ^-^

Namaarie!

Galenondowen 10-31-2003 04:11 AM

Well, I like Legolas, Haldir, Glofindel(sp?), Aragorn, Gandalf/Mithrandir. Galadriel sounds cool too. For places, Imladris/Rivendell, Lothlorien, Mordor.

kittenpants 11-06-2003 09:09 PM

Lachwen 07-28-2004 07:49 PM

Ondolinde, Brandywine, Gildor Inglorion, Glorfindel, Alqualonde, Lalaith, and Laiquendi. I love just saying those things out loud. Maybe that's why people look at me so strangely... ;)

Morsul the Dark 07-29-2004 12:42 AM

Balrog-You sense the power
Gandalf-awesome prononciation
Fangorn-sense of unsteadiness
Saruman-awesome pronunciation
Rohan-strenghth
Gimli-whats not to love about the name gimli :p

Boromir88 07-29-2004 07:28 AM

Tongue rolling

I just love names that sort of "roll" off the tongue, and sound so ellegant. As someone already said, Osgiliath is really funny to say. Some of my others are...

Imrahil
Celeborn
Cirith Ungol
Minas Tirith
Iarwain-ben-adar
Ghan-Buri-Ghan, in fact all pukel-men talk lol, with the "woses," "pukel-men," and "gorgun" is just fun to say lol.
Ecthelion
Remmirath
Radbug (great name for an orc)
And most of the dwarf names are fun, oin, gloin, balin, fili, kili...etc

My all time favorite word would have to be....
Mount Taniquetil, just rolls off so beautifully.

Thorongil 07-29-2004 07:57 AM

My favourite name is the one I have, Thorongil. It just sounds kind of mighty. Like a great eagle soaring under the stars. I like it.

Boromir88 07-29-2004 08:03 AM

Aragorn, naaa, nicknames yes.

I don't care much for the name "Aragorn," but it's his nicknames I like. Mentioned above, Thorongil is a good one, Elessar, Telcontar, Estel. Bill Ferny insulted him call him Stick-at-naught Strider, which is one of my favorite insult names lol.

Boromir88 07-29-2004 11:05 AM

Bear with me

You'll have to bear with me I just thought of some more, there's just too many good names to say.

Wetwang, just hilarious name all together
dwimmerlaik
khazad-dum
kheled-zaram
galadhrim
Caras Galadhon
Hyarmendacil
Most of the numenorean kings names, Tar-Telperien, Tar-Minyatur..etc.
Eomer's swords Guthwine, and Theoden's sword Herugrim (far better names then Anduril)
Any of the orc names, Radbug, Lugdush, Ugluk, Grishnakh, Snaga.
Tharkun
Tarks

When I think of more I will get back to you lol.

Encaitare 07-29-2004 02:23 PM

As I think the first poster said, Gildor Inglorion is truly a wonderful name. Other names/words I like are Bauglir, Laurelindorinan, Eressea, and let's not forget alallalallarumbalindorkamandaburume! (Entish for "hill") I think I've got it right, anyway; I'm going on memory here!

But if I was Bernard Hill I would make everyone call me Mr. Alallalalla etc. just to irritate them! Bah-hah!

Arwen Imladris 07-30-2004 12:49 PM

Off the top of my head here is my list:

- Imladris (obviously)
- Frodo
- Estel
- Gorgoroth
- Eryn Lasgalen
- Mithrandir

Morgul Queen 07-31-2004 04:49 PM

Quote:

and it's not a Middle-earth name but I still like the word: Olori
Actually, if you add a 'n' at the end it would be Olorin...Gandalf's name from when he was in Valinor.

My favourites are Morgul, Elu, Celeborn, Celebrimbor, Findekano, Maitimo and Silmarien.

Isowen 08-03-2004 11:51 AM

I like the sound of Rohan, Mirkwood (sounds creepy) Minas Morgul, Stoors, Isildur, nazgul, fangorn and the westmarch. Mostly because they are all very original names and not at all typical of ordinary fantasy tales. I myself have thought of many middle-earth type names but none compare to those mentioned. I think the place names in the shire could be more original, such as "old forest"!
