Geez these are tough, guys! I haven't had a guess in days!

Kalimac 04-09-2002 09:05 PM

Hmmm...how do you do gardening if you're renting a room? Is there a backyard that you can use? Lucky . I have two rooms but no yard except for the front lawns, which I cannot plant stuff on. Now if I switched to an apartment on the first floor...ahh, I'm moving soon enough anyway.

Hint for the riddle: you're most likely only to see it in one or two particular rooms of the house.

Kalimac 04-09-2002 09:06 PM

Hello, Rae! If you want, you can post one of your own and let us agonize for a change .

Samwise 04-09-2002 09:11 PM

Don't you remember my describing my garden to you in that PM, Kalimac? The room I rent is actually my own, in my parent's house. A couple of years ago, as I think I explained,
I "claimed" the front yard.
(If you don't, it's okay, 'cause half the time I think I've said things, and then I find out I haven't... )
Quote:

For some time Frodo and Sam managed to keep up with the others, but after a while they lagged behind. Sam's cut was burning like fire, and his head felt light. In spite of the shining sun the wind felt chill. He shivered.

Samwise 04-09-2002 09:14 PM

....and what do you mean, you can't plant things in your lawn? I have two freesias and a jonny-jump up growing in ours! (of course, they planted themselves....
Quote:

Aragorn tended to Sam and Frodo. Sam's wound was not deep, but it looked ugly, and Aragorn's face was grave as he examined it. After a moment he looked up with relief. "Good luck, Sam!" he said, "Many have recieved worse than this in payment for the slaying of their first Orc. "

Kalimac 04-09-2002 09:15 PM

Actually, Samwise, I don't think you ever did (just took a moment to glance over my PMs). If you want to do so, though, I'd be more than happy to read it . Still lucky, though - I can't see my dad ever relinquishing his garden even if I still lived at home (though honestly he's much better at it than I'll ever be ...)

Kalimac 04-09-2002 09:18 PM

I mean that they're not my lawns, they're the apt. complex's lawns which they hire gardeners to take care of, and they'll thank you not to plant anything there, since it might interfere with the landscaping. So yes, they're perfectly capable of growing stuff, but I can't plant it there. Sigh. Ah, Suburbia.

Do you want any more hints for the riddle? (Just bowing in the direction of the topic for the moment ).

Samwise 04-09-2002 09:23 PM

I didn't mean recently, you asked me about my garden, and.....
What? Oh, yeah, the topic. Not dust...uh...something spilled?
Quote:

"They're Elves," said Sam. "Can't you hear their voices? "
"Yes, they are Elves," said Legolas, "and they say that you breathe so loudly that they could shoot you in the dark."
Sam hastily put his hand over his mouth.

Kalimac 04-09-2002 09:33 PM

Nope, not something spilled. Think about the "millions must die" bit.

The garden thing is confusing me now! But I think we have each other's respective gardening situations pretty well mapped out at least . I do remember you mentioning that you're a flower person, though, and the fact that the snails are pretty bad for them. (You could have fooled this northerner ).

Samwise 04-09-2002 09:42 PM

Mm. Okay, must have dreamed it. (I can't have dreams that are actually INTERESTING, like some folks on this board....)
And as per your riddle, this just popped into my head, though it's probably not right.: Hair?
Quote:

Out of the shadows a ladder was let down. Legolas ran lightly up, and Frodo followed slowly; behind came Sam, trying not to breathe loudly.

Kalimac 04-09-2002 09:46 PM

Hair - no it's not the answer, but I like it. It really could fit, especially since hair consists of millions of dead cells (fun thought as I try to untangle it every morning). I think you have to get style points for that one . But no, it's something else. And like I said, it mostly shows up in one or two rooms.

Amanruthiel 04-10-2002 02:28 AM

Hi Guys,

I have a new riddle can I add it while to figure the last two out?

A xx

the_true_king_of_the_ring 04-10-2002 06:26 AM

WHATS RED AND HAIRY ???

F*NN*E RASH!!!!!!!!!!

Amanruthiel 04-10-2002 06:56 AM

Stephanos is yours reflection or shadow?

Kalimac is yours mould?

Don't think the second one quite fits thinking about it!!

A xx

Amanruthiel 04-10-2002 07:44 AM

My riddle:

You say I may not enter,
That your errors are my mistakes.
You think you can control me,
but I know there is escape.
I know when you are lying,
for I come here every day.
So why not stop your mischief,
and let me come and play.

What am I?

A xx

Rimbaud 04-10-2002 07:55 AM

Hello everyone; I have not deserted you. I am afraid that the correct answer to my riddle has not yet been posted. Not shadow or reflection I feel. My only clue is to go for something more tangible and more literal.

I'll cut and paste it back here in a second...

I do not breathe, but I run and jump.
I do not eat, but I swim and stretch.
I do not drink, but I sleep and stand.
I do not think, but I grow and play.
I do not see, but you see me every day.

There you go... good luck! Amanruthiel this is a little 'out-there' but is the answer to yours, your sense of humour?

Belin 04-10-2002 09:22 AM

Kalimac: is it dirty dishes?

Belin 04-10-2002 09:44 AM

Um, "Belin", would you mind not using my account, please?

Samwise 04-10-2002 09:57 AM

Amanruthiel, here's another off the wall guess if Stephanos is incorrect--your riddle reminds me of an old children's story--is it
"Nobody"?
Quote:

It was Sam who had insisted on choosing him, declaring that Bill (as he called him) would pine if he did not come.
"That animal can nearly talk," he said, "and would talk, if he stayed here much longer. He gave me a look as plain as Mr. Pippin could speak it: if you don't let me go with you, Sam, I'll follow on my own. "

Rimbaud 04-10-2002 10:08 AM

Would people rather I simply posted the solution to my riddle?

Or would you prefer a couple more guesses? It is quite an old riddle...

Raefindel 04-10-2002 10:33 AM

Samwise, That was me you told about your garden. Sounds nice.

Stephanos, I would guess a creek or river, but the 'see" part doesn't fit.

Amanruthiel, I have no Idea.Good riddle.

Rimbaud 04-10-2002 10:39 AM

Clue number 2 - there are two of the answer.

Clue number three - without one you are drunk

Samwise 04-10-2002 10:41 AM

OH! Thank you, Rae--I thought I was going nuts! (or nuttier than I already am!)

Aye, I'm sorry Belin. Twon't happen again.

Raefindel 04-10-2002 03:16 PM

Mae Govannen, Susan. Welcome to the downs. Enjoy your time here.

Samwise 04-10-2002 03:42 PM

Hullo an' welcome, Susan!
Quote:

It was Sam's turn that day to take the first watch, but Aragorn joined him. The silence grew until even Sam felt it. The occasional movements of his feet became loud noises. Sam could hear his own joints creaking, if he stirred.

Belin 04-10-2002 03:43 PM

Thanks, Susan... and in that case, welcome to the Downs from me as well. (Hey, cool, my first welcoming of anybody)
Ahem. Back to your regularly scheduled riddles.

Thankee

I've a riddle as well, so I do.

If you break me, I'll not stop working.
If you can touch me, my work is done.
If you lose me, you must find me with a ring soon after.

Samwise 04-10-2002 07:45 PM

A heart?
Quote:

At that moment Sam came running back from the edge of the dell.
"I don't know what it is," he said, "--but I suddenly felt afraid. I durstn't go outside this dell for any money" I felt that something was creeping up the slope. "

Susan Delgado 04-10-2002 07:50 PM

You got it

Kalimac 04-10-2002 08:09 PM

Hello everyone! (Especially Susan, since she's new. Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome. May you soon become a Shade). No, it's not mould or dirty dishes (urgh) but geographically you're getting rather close .

Amanruthiel - yours wouldn't happen to be a computer, would it? (At least if all those "system has performed an illegal operation" messages are as irritating for you as they are for me).

Stephanos, this is probably wrong but would yours be a leaf?

Samwise 04-10-2002 09:54 PM

Quote:

You got it
Really? Wow--I wasn't sure!
Quote:

"Elves! " exclaimed Sam. "Elves, sir!" He would have burst out of the trees and dashed off, if they had not pulled him back.

Kalimac 04-10-2002 11:23 PM

Stephanos - please forget my last guess, I hadn't remembered all the clues. Is the answer legs? (If someone is very drunk, after all, they might as well not have any).

Good guessing, Mistress Samwise

An' here's another yet

What lies in bed, and stands in bed,
first white, then red.
The plumper it gets,
the better the old woman likes it.

(An' no, everyone's first guess is wrong. Getcher minds out of the gutter! )

Susan Delgado 04-11-2002 02:00 AM

Kalimac, is it laundry?

Rimbaud 04-11-2002 07:16 AM

Kalimac got it right. Well done!

Oh, now I have to work out everybody else's...hold on I'll edit in some guesses in a second...

Susan, is it a rose? As in 'flowerbed'?

[ April 11, 2002: Message edited by: Stephanos ]

Amanruthiel 04-11-2002 07:45 AM

Kalimac

Good guess you got it right - how did you guess my computer keeps sending me loads of lovely error messages lately.

A xx

Susan Delgado 04-11-2002 07:45 AM

No, but you're on the right track.

Rimbaud 04-11-2002 07:47 AM

Susan ~ a tomato plant? Or am I slightly off-beam with my prediliction for vegetation?

Aragorn Husband of Arwen 04-11-2002 10:49 AM

Kalimac: Wild guess, but could it be Bacteria?
