Being good enough, or Christian enough has nothing to do with getting into heaven. It's like adoption, or fire insurance. You are family, or not.. you've got fire insurance or not. You've clearly chosen.....not. And that settles it.

for the summer, i work at a country club and drive golfcarts all day. I am the guy who drives in the cage and picks up balls on the driving range. it is the ultimate dream job!

I'm only 14 (big laugh) and a student in really good school called CCS. Now the best part about me is where I'm from, I live in a country with the best education system in the world(no joke) and I am the only member here I think from my country. Now anyone who I have met in the chatrooms or theodred, beregond or sam be good sports and don't answer!

Here is a hint

I am a Graphic Designer and have been one for twenty years, I have been a Tolkien fan for longer (almost 30 years now) If loving Tolkien and Star Wars and Star Trek and many other meaningful forms of entertainment and enlightenment makes other people want to see me as a NERD? Well so be it... I would never give them up to please anothers expectations...

I'm a High School student from Vancouver, British Columbia. I've been reading Tolkien since grade three, but since TV has taken over the world only two of my friends and I can discuss Middle Earth. However, I have a side job. You want ODD jobs, I pick up dog @#%$ for 25 cents a pile, beat that!

Re: What do you do for a living?

I guess I'm that nerdo that keeps up the stereotypes... well... I don't look like one, since I'm a girl and I don't have glasses or greasy hair or anything. I'm a software developer, and I study computer science at the Helsinki University (in Finland). I don't think I'm going to do this for the rest of my life though, I plan on perhaps applying for the medical school and become a doctor! Whee!

P.S. I'm a Star Trek fan too. And I play roleplaying games. I guess I fill all the descriptions of the typical nerd. Well, fortunately I don't look like one.

I currently am in summer high school, which isn't so bad, but doesn't give me a whole lot of spare time. I also read, design webpages, and play games on the computer. And of course I am on the Barrow-downs when I can!

If you own a bank (for instance), and want a dedicated t1 long distance communication line between your main database and an ATM, you would order that line from a long distance carrier, that long distance carrier would order the local portion of that line from the local exchange carrier. if your t1 goes down and the long distance carrier determines the problem to be in the local exchange portion, a trouble ticket is generated by that local exchange carrier and worked. I'm the guy that double checks those tickets when they are closed out. Does it get much better than that?

MLD-Grounds-Keeper-Willie 01-19-2003 12:00 AM

Beren87 01-19-2003 01:59 AM

More than often I simply get money from people who don't expect me to pay them back.

However, when that fails, I'll write a story or two to send in to some obscure Sci-fi magazine. Or design some web-page for a company or person. Boring work, but it gives me a lot of flexibility.

Oh, that and I go to school.

The Witch-King of Angmar 01-19-2003 06:31 AM

Hi.

I'm attending the 12th class in a German school. In my spare time I read a lot, meet my girlfriend, go out with friends, work on my LOTR-Webpage and so on. Ah, I forgot music. Sometimes I play the piano, since I've been learning it for 12 years.

Since my friends aren't much concerned with my Tolkien-"mania", I haven't ever been called a nerd. *g*

Estelyn Telcontar 01-19-2003 06:42 AM

Hmmmm, somehow this thread managed to survive buried on the Books forum for two years! High time to move it to Novices and Newcomers, since it's not a book discussion...

Isilmëiel 01-19-2003 04:31 PM

I have an after-school job at a grocery store either doing the cash register or bagging groceries. I like having $$$. A lot of kids are getting into Tolkien at my school; one even rode his bike to the next town to get the Silmarillion.

lord of dor-lomin 01-19-2003 04:34 PM

Esty, I can't believe it took you so long.

My main job is going attending my University where I recently switched to business after two years of physics. During the school year I work part time at a department store. During the summer I work full time tutoring kids.

the phantom 01-19-2003 04:40 PM

How weird, lord of dor-lomin. I also am a business major, work at a department store, and tutor kids during the summer (not full time though). Come to think of it, it's the same University and department store as you!

(only difference, I get better grades)

lord of dor-lomin 01-19-2003 04:45 PM

Oh yeah? Well, you'll see after next semester that the last one was a fluke.

And phantom, you forgot to mention that you make some money doing recordings for people (and that you're hoping to make a bunch of money next summer when you get done with your CD)

(and I bet I get promoted at work sooner than you)

Selmo 01-21-2003 08:14 AM

After looking back to the first post of this series, I realise that I must be a half-nerd.
I am a Star Trek fan (Trekkie not Trekker) but I'm not any kind of computer nut. Posting on boards like this is the limit of my IT skills.

I'm a Church Leader and a volluntary Youth Worker but to earn my daily bread, beer and pipe-weed I'm a Servant of Lore-masters and Assistant to Wizards (I'm a Lab Technician in a University working with academics and scientists).

Inderjit Sanghera 01-21-2003 08:28 AM

What are the qualifications to be a nerd? I don't watch Trekkie, and I hate computers. Though, I have to admit, a lot of these computer peoeple and Trekkies strike me as insane. There is a boy in my Sociology class who has no intrest but computers, and whenever I attempt to talk to him, he shys away and mumbles. Oh yeah, he is also scared of girls. And he is 18. My Star Trek fan friend also though that Final Fantasy, Vannila sky, Jason X and Armageddon were good movies, and he hasn't heard of Martin Scorecse. He also thinks Robert De Niro played Micheal Corleone.

Lossentilien 01-23-2003 01:25 PM

I'm in high school at the moment, but hoping to go to art college to study film, in a practical sense, not historical. Am definatley not a nerd. Don't mean that offensively or anything, nothing against them, they're often nicer than "normal" people.

Inderjit Sanghera 01-23-2003 01:34 PM

Nicer? Yes. Yawn inspiring? In most cases. Have terrible taste in movies? Definetly. I don't think that any of the people who haev posted here fit my interpreation of a 'Nerd', I.e Boring, not being able to make friends.

Really, Raefindel? Someone has to make them...right? LoL.

I never liked Star Trek. My Uncle always said I'd love it if I gave it a chance...but I just don't like Star Trek...

I am still in middle school, and my friends borrow my hard-eaned money for lunch and never give it back. My friend Erica probably owes me about a hundred dollars from over the years.

I guess you could say I have a job, even though it isn't professional or anything. I have an after-school job at the county library where I sort out all the books. I also make some money teaching my neighbors daughter how to play the guitar.
