You inky-swot you... (whatever that is)

You're always right...

Mat_Heathertoes 06-06-2002 09:11 AM

Hehe .. Even when I'm wrong as my wife says

Next Question.

What are the Eldarin terms for male and female?

http://humferier.free.fr/sac/dent.gif

akhtene 06-06-2002 06:30 PM

Haven't studied many languages
Is that heru & hiril ?

Mat_Heathertoes 06-06-2002 06:32 PM

alas, no

Lómelindi 06-06-2002 07:01 PM

Well, since "Eldarin" is an umbrella term for "Elvish languages," here's both Sindarin and Quenya.

Sindarin:
Female: ending of -riel
Man (I don't know male): adan

Quenya:
Female: inya
Male: hanu, hanwa, hanuvoite

Arwen Imladris 06-14-2002 08:03 PM

I don't know what happened to Mat, but I would think that you were right. It has been a while so I would just ask now Lormindi (sp)

Sam Gamgee 06-17-2002 06:17 PM

ok, randomnisity, i know that Arwen means woman in Sindarin, so, hehe, Arwen's name means woman, which would explain her betrothal to Aragorn, as he's a man and all...

Lómelindi 06-17-2002 07:20 PM

Okay, randomness rules, so: What number am I thinking of…?
Just kidding. But for lack of a better question:

What is the material known as "moon-sparkle"?

Lindolirian 06-17-2002 09:09 PM

Hmm perhaps Ithildin?

Lómelindi 06-17-2002 10:34 PM

I've come to the conclusion that I need to stop answering questions so I don't have to ask them, because I ask such bad questions…D'Arvit.

In other words, you're correct, as usual.

Lindolirian 06-18-2002 11:36 AM

When, where, and how did Thorin Oakensheild get his surname?

Mat_Heathertoes 06-19-2002 03:37 PM

When - TA 2799.
Where - Nanduhirion (Battle of)
How - During the battle Thorins shield was split and he cut off an oak branch with his axe to use as a replacement shield.

Lindolirian 06-19-2002 09:10 PM

Yes, Mat, you are right.

Mat_Heathertoes 06-20-2002 04:24 PM

What were Numenorean bows made from?

obloquy 06-21-2002 02:54 PM

Hollow steel, according to UT.

Mat_Heathertoes 06-23-2002 09:38 AM

Correct. Do go on.

Arwen Imladris 07-12-2002 05:58 PM

O.K. It has been a while, so if whoever's turn it is wants to go, go ahead. If not the next question is:

What was the kind of tree that replaced the party tree at Bag End?

Lindolirian 07-12-2002 08:31 PM

It was mallorn, the only one west of the mountains and east of the Sea; it was a wonder of the neighbourhood. Ha! I just read that chapter for the 34th time today!!

Galadel Vinorel 08-16-2002 11:50 AM

Well, it seems that no one is going to ask another question, so I might as well.
Question- How old was Pippin when he went to Minas Tirith?

Orome 08-16-2002 08:36 PM

28 going on 29

Galadel Vinorel 08-16-2002 08:38 PM

hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm......... I thought that he was exactely 29, but, ohh well. Okay, Orome, your turn.

Lindolirian 09-25-2002 03:45 PM

I'll take it. Who is Gil-Galad's great grandfather?

Isilya 09-25-2002 04:40 PM

I do believe that would be Finwë

Telchar 09-26-2002 07:16 AM

... at least he is the only one of the 8 that we know the name of

Lindolirian 09-27-2002 07:05 PM

Isilya has what i'm thinkin of.

Diamond18 10-23-2002 10:51 PM

I'm reviving an old thread, oh yay! I need someplace random for this bit'o inane trivia, so here it is:

How many words long did J.R.R Tolkien estimate "The Lord of the Rings" to be?

hobbitlass 10-24-2002 07:20 AM

"Wicked, wicked Master."
I suppose the answer would be found in the Letters book. Of which I don't have.
So I'll start counting......

Diamond18 10-25-2002 10:34 AM

All right, all right, nice master will give the answer: 600,000. I don't know if this is how long it is, but Tolkien states that number in several of his letters to Allen & Unwin.

hobbitlass 10-25-2002 03:06 PM

Thank you "Nice master". But I'm already at 1648 words....give me a week and I'll see how close Tolkien was himself!

Beren87 10-25-2002 03:50 PM

Hmm,
Fotr = 188,270 words
TTT =154,459 words
RotK =135,397 words
Total = 478,108 words

That includes table of contents, but not the Appendix. I got bored after the end of RotK, so if someone wants to count the words in the Appendices go right ahead.

hobbitlass 10-25-2002 06:02 PM

Are you (BEren87) serious! You actually counted? I was playing around, but would have done it sometime.
When did you do it and how long did it take you? I am impressed.

Beren87 10-25-2002 07:05 PM

Yah, I did. Took me about a week to finish. I did it in the middle of summer. I get bored really easy...

Diamond18 10-25-2002 09:24 PM

I had a feeling Tolkien was over-estimating. (I would take my cap off to you, Beren87, but I'm not wearing a cap...)

I recently wrote a story that is 176,389 words long. I was proud of that, but I guess I'll have to work harder to come close to Tolkien!

Lindolirian 10-27-2002 08:53 PM

Beren, ur amazing, but I'm sorry: Get a life. hehehe wow

Beren87 10-28-2002 06:08 AM

It was summer, I was bored!! and.. and..., ok I don't have a life. SHEESH. Wow, were so off topic, this is ridiculous. The evil moderators shall swoop out of the sky soon.

lathspell 10-28-2002 08:11 AM

Then let us get 'on-topic' again!

Allow me to ask:
What is the most reknown work of Salmar (and the only one I know of)?

greetings,
lathspell

Telchar 10-28-2002 12:47 PM

The horns of Ulmo

lathspell 10-28-2002 02:50 PM

Of course, Telch!

Go ahead!

Telchar 10-29-2002 02:22 AM

who lived in the fairest dwelling of any king that has ever been east of the Sea?

Beren87 10-29-2002 03:40 PM

Thingol lived in Menegroth.
