I can't believe no one guessed it yet...
Could it be, that I mistook a movie quote for a book quote?! No, I refuse to believe that's possible!

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-22-2010 04:58 AM

Both, I believe. "That would depend on the manner of your return" was something Denethor said to Faramir in both -- wow, something that made the transition and stayed in the same people's mouths! ;)

I feel a bit out of line, popping in when I've only been lurking up till now...:o

:) Yavanna to Manwė:
Quote:

"Would that the trees might speak on behalf of all things that have roots and punish those that wrong them!"
Btw, the former quote (Denethor to Faramir) is a bit shorter in the book: "That depends on the manner of your return."

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-22-2010 02:42 PM

You've got it, Guinevere. Take it away!

Guinevere 05-22-2010 02:58 PM

But very bright were the stars upon the margin of the world, when at times the clouds about the West were drawn aside.

- Voronwė

Guinevere 05-24-2010 02:17 PM

You've got it, Eorl! :) please proceed

(Voronwė is one of my favourite Elves. I think his account of his journey is very touching.)

Eorl of Rohan 05-24-2010 03:18 PM

Thank you, Lady Queen.

This is not said by any particular character but the narrator himself,
and is an apt summing-up of the tragic history that Tolkien wrought for his world:

-- -- --- ------ ---- --- ---- --- --------- -- -------- --- ----, ---- --- -- --- --- ---- -- ---- ------;

Inziladun 05-24-2010 03:52 PM

Not an actual quote by a character?
