Um.... Would it be unmannerly to offer a guess without asking for a letter?

With no letters? That would be quite extraordinary!

But the rule is, when you think you've got it, go for it!

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-24-2010 07:48 PM

Yeah, well, it wouldn't be the first time. Word games and I are very old friends. :D

If it has passed from the high and beautiful to darkness and ruin, that was of old the fate of Arda marred.

From the end of The Silmarillion. My version of the book has 'the' before beautiful, and that would be missing from the quote, which otherwise appears to fit perfectly.

I thought that the hint might have been a li'l bit too much, but still, what a feat! The floor is yours, Ibrinidilpathanezel~

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-24-2010 09:20 PM

The hint was definitely a pointer, but I had another edge, Eorl -- I'd just read that part of the book yesterday. A fortunate coincidence, I'm sure. :)

For my 500th post, here's a bit of a travel review:

"- --------- ---- ---- -- ---- --- -------- - ---- ---- -- ----. - ----- ------- ----- ---- ----- -- ----- - ---."

Blind Guardian 05-24-2010 10:10 PM

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-24-2010 10:36 PM

Guinevere 05-25-2010 05:53 AM

T please!

kudos, Ibri!http://www.myrias.de/Templates/Elron.../notworthy.gif that was awsome! (It has been done here before though. e.g. Diamond 18 guessed "Gil-Galad was an Elven-king etc. without any letters, just thanks to the tell-tale hyphens!)

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-25-2010 06:14 AM

IT

"I --i----t-- ---- ---- -- ---- t-- ----i--t - ---- ---- -- t-i-. I t-i-- ------- -i--t ---- ----- -- ----- - -it."

I had no delusion that I was the first! :D But sometimes, things just fall into place with very little to go on. I've freaked out a few of my relatives by walking into a room where they were watching the TV game show, saw the topic and the blank spaces, and knew the answer before a single letter was up. It's a pattern-seeking thing -- that and being familiar with a lot of clichés. ;)

Lindale 05-25-2010 06:55 AM

Sss pleassseee.

Congrats on having such a great eye, Ibri!

Inziladun 05-25-2010 06:56 AM

L for me.

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-25-2010 07:41 AM

ITSL

Tuor in Gondolin 05-25-2010 02:16 PM

I think "K"s.

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-25-2010 03:38 PM

ISTLMHEK

"I e-i-e-tl- --me ---k -- m--h t-- s---i-ht - ---- ---m m- t-i-. I thi-k -----l- mi-ht h--e sh--- me
----- - -it."

Okay, hint #1: I may have had an extra letter in the second word. If I did, it's corrected now. Hint #2: The travel being commented upon happened in another book. Too vague?

Faramir Jones 05-25-2010 04:32 PM

I think I have it!

"I evidently came back by much too straight a road from my trip. I think Gandalf might have shown me round a bit."

Bilbo to Frodo and the other three hobbits, the day before they left Rivendell, in Chapter VI ('Many Partings') of Book 6 of The Lord of the Rings.

Ibrīnišilpathānezel 05-25-2010 05:48 PM

By George, I think he's got it!

Quite right, Faramir! The floor (or screen) is yours! :)

Faramir Jones 05-26-2010 03:37 AM

My turn

Here's my quote:

"-- ---- --- --- --- ---- -- ------- ------ -- --- -----, --- ----- ----- ----- ------ ---."

Hint: It's an insult.

Aganzir 05-26-2010 05:56 AM

A please!

Tuor in Gondolin 05-26-2010 07:06 AM

"b"s?

Lindale 05-26-2010 11:20 AM

Guinevere 05-26-2010 12:58 PM

Faramir Jones 05-26-2010 03:02 PM

Inziladun 05-26-2010 03:09 PM

Let's have the R's.

Faramir Jones 05-26-2010 03:54 PM

Exactly right!

Well done, Inziladun! You were exactly right.

It's your turn now.:)

Inziladun 05-28-2010 11:37 AM

Thank you , Faramir.
