Poor Matt Heathertoes was killed by Sharky's men (or at least by some troublemakers in Bree).

Unless you mean something terribly ironic, no, it was not a forest.

I may be aiming well wide of the mark here, but for some reason `cleft valley` rings a bell. I may be thinking of Rivendell, though.

Taimar's doubts were accurate. I like Kittle's answer; indeed, someone might have called it that. But not the men of Gondor. Let's do two steps. Does ayone know what Nan Curunir was?

You must be despairing at how obtuse we are being, Galpsi. Can`t you just put us out of our misery? Angrenost is the only other name I can suggest, though I am pretty certain it is not what is required.

What does Edoras mean? Is it a legitimate or mitigated word according to JRRT?

As far as I know, it is Old English, so it most probably just is a translation of its real name in the language of the Rohirrim. The meaning of Edoras is nothing but &quot;houses (used for living)&quot;.

Unfortunately that is not what JRRT said in his essay On Translation.

Edoras means 'the courts', though I am unsure of its mitigation.

I'll give this one two days for someone to either answer it, or for Galpsi to give it to us. This is the largest thread in the Quiz Room, and I think it's about time for it to throw in the towel. 143 replies!! Yeah, it's that time.

I think Galpsi would approve that our Wight should go on. I looked the answer up and it was right; like galpsi said, in the appendix 'On Translation'.

Okay, then we can keep this one going and it is Sir Wight's turn to ask!

We'll say that after Ron's question is answered correctly and wrapped up, this thread will be done. So, unless I get a whole lot of complaints <img src=ohwell.gif ALT=":/"> , this will be the last question for this thread. Make it a good one!
