The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 01-14-2004 03:48 PM

Yes, that was something of a wild stab in the dark. This, however, is not. It's Ereinion Gil-Galad, in a letter to Meneldur, king of Númenor. He is speaking of Aldarion and the rising shadow of Sauron in the East.

Guinevere 01-15-2004 02:11 AM

Right!
(btw I was thrilled when I first read UT and saw Gil-Galad's letter: at last a bit more about that legendary but mysterious character... but unfortunately it didn't go on )

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 01-15-2004 03:45 PM

Yes, Tolkien did have an annoying habit of leaving his audience hungry for more. It's nice to see a little of Gil-Galad in his own words, nonetheless.

Whose words of wisdom are these?

A small oversight; but it proved fatal. Small oversights often do.

Gandalf replying to Meriadoc who asked about Thrain.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 01-16-2004 12:55 PM

Right you are.

Guinevere 01-22-2004 08:05 AM

Aldarion to Erendis. And he added: "I plant more than I felled."

Mariska Greenleaf 01-22-2004 08:54 AM

Right you are!
I was gonna add that last part, but I figured it would be all to easy then...

Guinevere 01-22-2004 09:58 AM

Thank you, Mariska!

Guinevere 01-28-2004 01:18 PM

Shall I make the quote a bit longer ?

Mariska Greenleaf 01-29-2004 06:42 AM

Turambar, talking to himself.

Guinevere 01-29-2004 07:45 AM

Of course! Perhaps it was too easy now for you...

Mariska Greenleaf 01-29-2004 07:54 AM

I wouldn't say too easy, but it did help me find it.

Follow me, if you will.

Guinevere 02-08-2004 09:50 AM

Finally found it! It's Cirion speaking to Eorl and his companions, before they go up to the Halifirien.

I go now to the Hill of Awe. Follow me, if you will.

Mariska Greenleaf 02-10-2004 06:03 AM

That's the one allright!:)

Catchup in UT Quotes Game

This is a pasteover from the old forum, so I can continue here. (I'm also pasting Guinevere's quote question):
question: Thanks! I hope this one is not too short:
Quote:

Go! Go now!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My answer: Elendur to Isildur in "The Disaster of the Gladden Fields" as they are beset by Orcs.
Cheers,
Lyta

Guinevere's response: Yes, well done, Lyta!
(btw, since when are you a haunted halfling? I've only noticed it now. Somehow reminiscent of poor Frodo...)

OK! Now that I've got all that done, hopefully I haven't broken any rules! Gotta find a new UT quote! Here I go!

Quote:

...his heart had some deep premonition beyond his waking thought.
And thanks for the comment on my "Haunted Halfling" status Guinevere! However, I seem to have lost it again! ;)

Cheers,
Lyta

Mariska Greenleaf 02-11-2004 02:29 AM

That would be about Gandalf, and how he felt towards the "little people". The hobbits of course. Say, I always thought that a "quote" should be something someone says or thinks.
Am I right?:)

Lyta_Underhill 02-11-2004 11:44 AM

Gee, Mariska, you've uncovered the flaw in my quote! It isn't a quote! But it is Gandalf, so the floor is yours! from Concerning Gandalf, Saruman and the Shire:
Quote:

For indeed in the beginning it had no such connexion, and was due only to Gandalf's love for the Little People, unless his heart had some deep premonition beyond his waking thought.
I had a strange feeling I was doing something wrong there! Thanks for pointing out something I should have seen much earlier!

Cheers,
Lyta

Eorl of Rohan 02-11-2004 10:12 PM

I'll join in :D I just love Unfinished Tales.

Mariska Greenleaf 02-12-2004 03:45 AM

Ok, try this one!

Quote:

unloved and unlovely
It's a very short one, I know, but it shouldn't be too hard.;)

Eorl of Rohan 02-12-2004 03:47 AM

Got it!

It was the lame Brandir talking to Niniel Nienor.

Quote:

wise brother? Say rather lame brother, unloved and unlovely

Mariska Greenleaf 02-12-2004 04:23 AM

You needed only two minutes to find it???

Good job! :)

Eorl of Rohan 02-12-2004 04:27 AM

:D This is the first time I got a quiz right!

Mariska Greenleaf 02-12-2004 04:31 AM

That's great! Congrats. Now you can post a new one for us to find...

Guess who?

Guinevere 02-12-2004 07:33 AM

Aldarion to his father, when Meneldur had told him he would resign the sceptre to him.

Eorl of Rohan 02-12-2004 08:12 PM

Yes, that's true. Please continnue, Guinevere!

Guinevere 02-13-2004 10:33 AM

thank you, Eorl!

Your news is stale.

Eorl of Rohan 02-15-2004 10:06 PM

I got it... I think.

No, wait, that was in LOTR, said by Denethor.

*dives for a copy of UT*

Be right back!

Maybe in conversation between Thorin and Olorin?

Estanesse 02-17-2004 11:13 AM

Turin to Gelmir and Arminas

Guinevere 02-22-2004 10:51 AM

Correct, Estanesse! Well done!

Estanesse 02-22-2004 01:37 PM

Thanks Guinevere,

Estanesse 02-22-2004 03:44 PM

Very good Evisse the Blue , your turn :)
(But is it not Ecthelion :p)

Evisse the Blue 02-23-2004 10:45 AM

So sorry. Typo.
Quote:

All this day until dusk

Eorl of Rohan 02-29-2004 07:06 AM

No idea. Please have pity on us ignorant mortals and make the quote a bit longer, please.

Evisse the Blue 02-29-2004 08:57 AM

I'm sorry but I forgot where where that quote came from :( it's been a while...heh...amnesia
I'll give a different, longer one now:
Quote:

This is no place for such joy as yours.

HerenIstarion 03-01-2004 01:26 AM

Quote:

Long sight may be safer than lurking," said Túrin. "Amon Rudh gazes far and wide. Well, Mim, I will come and see what you have to show. How long will it take us, stumbling Men, to come thither?" "<html><font color="red">All this day until dusk</font>," Mim answered.

and the next one:

Quote:

One morning soon after Erendis came to Emerie she awoke to the song of birds, and there on the sill of her window were the Elven-birds that long had dwelt in her garden in Armenelos, but which she had left behind forgotten. "Sweet fools, fly away!" she said. "<font color="red">This is no place for such joy as yours.</font></html>"

Evisse the Blue 03-01-2004 01:56 AM

Correct on all accounts! And thanks for clearing up that mess. Not remembering the first one was really getting to me.
Please continue.:)

HerenIstarion 03-01-2004 02:30 AM

The thing happens. I for myself used to forget encrypted 'backward/another way round/quote that was not' thingies, so now I have a special file for it, where I memorize things I ask. Quite a handy practice, mostly recommended :)
