Actually I think I know it but my version has some extra words but everything else fits perfectly.

“But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores, guarding the Havens until the last ship sails. Then I shall await thee.”

Cirdan giving Gandalf the ring.

Guinevere 07-05-2021 12:18 PM

 Wow, incredible! How did you find that out with only one letter? Kudos!!

In my book (HarperCollins, ed.1994) Cirdan says: "But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails. I will await you."

I wonder that there are such differences... I guess your version is the original one, because an editor would probably not add more text or change "you" to "thee"..

The first word ended in t which made it most likely But or Put or out, but the third word not being “the” meant unlikely to be a location preposition EG “out of the” “put in the”.

The single letter later was either “I” or “A” I assumed “I” which would make the fourth word “me” to setting up the subject I.

And the phrase that fit best was “But as for me”

A far simpler explanation I made a bunch of assumptions and got lucky.

Gandalf to Beorn, when introducing the dwarves little by little

(I was a bit irritated by the fact that the T in "with" was missing...)

Morsul the Dark 07-07-2021 03:45 PM

Ah indeed it is!

Also well done getting it with the missing t sorry about that.

Guinevere 07-08-2021 10:02 AM

Thank you!

"---/ ----/ ---/ ---/ ----/ ---/ ----/ --/ ---/ -----/ ---/ ---/ -------/ --/ ---/ -----/; ---/ --------/ ----/ ---/ ----/ ----/ --/ ---/ ------/ -----/ --/ ---/ ----/ ---l/ ------/ ----/ ---/ ---/."

Morsul the Dark 07-08-2021 01:40 PM

Well assuming that’s an L left behind and not the punctuation might as well fill the rest in L

Blind Guardian 07-08-2021 02:28 PM

I feel like I always start with vowels so...T

Guinevere 07-08-2021 02:57 PM

LT (the "left behind L" was only a typo :o sorry)

"--t/ l---/ --t/ t--/ --ll/ t--/ ----/ --/ t--/ -----/ ---/ t--/ -------/ --/ t--/ ----t/; ---/ --------/ t--t/ t--/ t---/ ----/ --/ t--/ --l---/ l--t-/ --/ t--/ ---t/ ---/ ----t-/ ----/ t--/ ---/."

Morsul the Dark 07-08-2021 03:32 PM

“Too well the”?

Possibly.

I’ll take H and see if we can break out the Thes.

Guinevere 07-09-2021 07:24 AM

HLT

"--t/ l---/ --t/ t--/ --ll/ th-/ ----/ --/ th-/ -----/ ---/ th-/ -------/ --/ th-/ h---t/; ---/ --------/ th-t/ th-/ t---/ h---/ --/ th-/ --l---/ l--th/ --/ th-/ ---t/ ---/ ----th/ ----/ th-/ ---/."

Morsul the Dark 07-09-2021 11:26 AM

Hmmm nothing’s shaking loose in the old noggin. W?

Guinevere 07-09-2021 12:19 PM

HLTW

Morsul the Dark 07-09-2021 04:20 PM

I know strands of words but can’t connect them.

O

Blind Guardian 07-10-2021 12:49 AM

More vowels needed

A?

Guinevere 07-10-2021 07:54 AM

Blind Guardian 07-10-2021 01:40 PM

Love not too well thy work of thy hands and the devices of thy heart; and remember that the true hope of the Noldor lieth in the West, and cometh from the Sea.

Ulmo to Turgon, Silmarillion

I don't know what the first word is, since it's not in my copy.

It was hard because the does not equal thy

Guinevere 07-11-2021 09:57 AM

that's the one, well done Blind Guardian! :)

The sentence in my edition starts with: "But love not too well the work of thy hands..."

Blind Guardian 07-11-2021 03:07 PM

"---- --- ----- -- ------ ----, -- ------ ---- -----, --, -- -- ----, --- --- ----- -----?"

Guinevere 07-12-2021 08:28 AM

Let's start with T !

Morsul the Dark 07-12-2021 12:32 PM

I really really want to take this down with no letters. “, **,” is the key. I’ve plugged in every two letter word that makes sense between two commas but can’t find anything.

Fine I’ll try the old fashioned way.

Is taller than trees, Up, up it goes, And yet never grows ?

WAT

Blind Guardian 07-14-2021 11:16 PM

Ah it was close enough. I like how you didn't post the actual quote for 10 hours.

TWO semicolons in this one. Hm.

Let's mix things up a little and start with a W.
