Greetings and Salutations Baran. There are many activities you can find here at the downs, from the Chapter-by-Chapter book discussions, Scene-by-Scene movie discussions, if you want to get out of the "serious" and into the "mirth" perhaps Crazy Captions, or the Werewolf Games will suit you. Plus there's on going RPG's. Enjoy your stay.

Gothmog 11-08-2005 10:26 AM

I guess I've been dead long enough to make my first welcome post here. Welcome, both Panda and Baran. You see, you already have nicknames! It's just because I'm so lazy.

A little comment on the "ranking" system. You'll become a higher rank of dead (for example wight) when you reach a certain number of posts, but not after a certain time like Celebuial said (sorry to correct you).

And it is true that age does not matter. Many great posters are adults with long experiance while others read they're first Tolkien book not long ago. Everybody is welcome and can have fun here! I'll be glad to see you on the ongoing Silmarillion Survivor thread. We need some more audience to vote!

Guess that's all... See you around!

Baranithil 11-09-2005 01:50 AM

Ok, ok so I'm old...and dead...It's because I have to go back into life to make some things clear (my clothes turned white then, and i really don't know why;) )
Thank you all for that cold welcoming, now I feel like home:D

Oh, I wasn't trying to take credit for the name-giving. Only explaining why I used them. And that goes for all of you people here, I always shorten your names, but that's only because most of you has such long and beautiful names that I can't muster the energy to spell them out ;)

One thing that would make the descent into the land of the dead easier is a list of nicknames. In the beginning it's hard to keep track of all people and nicks down here. I know I was confused.

To all new: this isn't a good post. Keep on topic. Sorry for setting such a bad example.

Hope everybody enjoys their death!

Yes, quite bad. Those who commit off topic posts will be forced to find a shrubbery! :p But, seriously now, off topic is bad, the mods if they notice it will try to steer the thread back in the direction it's supposed to be, but if it continues there are serious consequences.

Rose 11-10-2005 02:00 AM

A shrubbery, eh?

With thorns, no doubt! :p

Rune Son of Bjarne 11-10-2005 03:56 AM

Well it could have thorns, but usually it is not demanded as long as it is a nice and neat shrubbery. . . But back on topic: Hey Rose I see you have allready postet in the Green Dragon; I hope I will soon meet you in the Quiz Room.

Together we are going to have lot's of fun, if you are game.

Boromir88 11-10-2005 06:37 AM

Yes, Plastic_Panda, there are moderators here. ;)

Our handy "Barrow-meeter" Boromir88 has suggested some of the interesting forums and games here, but you should also, before you post more, find the other barometer of taste and style here. Please read carefully Estelyn Telcontar's "Guidelines for Forum Posting". Estelyn is the Moderator for the Books, Movies and Newbies forums and so she knows a thing or two of helpful hints for the newly dead, no matter what age they claim to be. She also guides the Chapter by Chapter discussion in the Books forum. So, in other words, she's someone who knows her way around and so is a great person to ask for advice.

And if learning from authority isn't your cup of tea, you can read over many of the threads and posts here to see the kind of discussion which the forum generates. Chatspeak and chatty posts are typically rare and not well received--people just don't like the kind of thoughtlessness which those styles demonstrate. Such sloppiness also tends to limit the kind of wit and humour which good writing makes possible --and this place is definitely about wit and humour. There's only so many times one can overuse an ! before it becomes boringly predictable, after all. ;)

And welcome also to Baranithil and Rose.

Thinlómien 11-10-2005 08:27 AM

Welcome, Rose.

I can really recommend the werewolf games to every newbie (and not-so-newbie, for that matter), though I've only been playing in one game this far.

Kath 11-10-2005 11:27 AM

Rose has already found the RPG's at least! Welcome and enjoy the Downs to you and all the other new arrivals.

Valesse 11-10-2005 11:52 AM

Hey hey, Plastic_Panda, Baranithil, and Rose and welcome to the 'downs! Seeing as that the majority of y'all have found your way into RPs and the Quizzes you'll soon be -so- addicted you won't want to leave... and find the smallest, shineist things amusing!-- well okay, maybe not that, but you'll fall in love with the text-hoovel we've tredged much like the rest of us.

I can't say that I've been in the forum for AGES, but I've certainly been around the people for a matter of years, and they're all truely great. Don't worry too much about those "I'm new to this whole forum" feeling because making buddies is easy after you animate those skeletons and get into the (Disco-king Boromir) groove of things here. If you have any questions about Mirth-ical matters I swear upon my sword... (of course I don't have a REAL sword yet, but those plastic toothpick ones work in this case) I will do my best to assist you.

Glirdan 11-10-2005 02:44 PM

Welcome among the living dead Rose!! I hope your stay here is gruesome and terrifying. :D

Gil-Galad 11-10-2005 11:37 PM

Gorwingel 11-11-2005 03:36 AM

Hello again

Well hasn't it been awhile (almost a year)
I had been trying to avoid an English paper, when my Lord of the Rings book loving roomate and I got on the topic of Fan Fiction
So I decided to go and search out the dear old downs, where I found my account still valid, and people that I remember dearly
Now I do have to admit that my book/film/everything Tolkien knowledge is quite rusty, but it is nice to see that all is well  (That smile has to be my favorite)
And I do have to say that I love the new leaf message icon

Sleepy Ranger 11-11-2005 05:07 AM

Also random note to all new people, Go do some Quotes... NOW!

When ever a game ends you can join the next one by stating it on the Tol-in-Gaurhoth thread, but you can't post until the current game is over. . .

I would recomend a Junior game first. There is no game right now so you can just post that you would like to join the next game, this you do in the Tol-in-Gaurhoth Junior thread. (I belive ther are 3 persons on the list for the next game)

Farmgoth 11-13-2005 03:08 PM

I'm Farmgoth, son of Faramgorth II... :P
Neh, my real name is Mariano, I'm from Argentina, I'm 14 years old. I like Tolkien since I have read The Hobbit, that's the first book I had.
I love role playing, with my friends I play MERP and Dungeons & Dragons.
Well... I've nothing more to say here... I will see what else I can find in this forum...

C ya!
