The Saucepan Man 08-15-2006 11:54 AM

Letter from an avid spectator

(Apologies, I posted this mistakenly in the game thread before.)

Come on folks, it's all far too friendly.

I want to see some sabotage and double-crossing ... ;)

I understand that misrepresentation is not allowed and neither is interaction during the day. But I'm looking at least for a little bit of competitive spirit, rather than all this chuminess. :D

(This is only mildly tongue-in-cheek. ;) )

Valier 08-15-2006 11:57 AM

Thin...sorry about that......lol Look at the map and that shows where everyone is...I will edit my post to reflect this...sorry again.

Oh and Sleepy....I am the Mod! I can do what I like! :D ;)

For the record, I'm waking up first!!

Actually I think it's just that we have the same plan to get to the Hoard, which is cool. You might be seeing more sabotage soon, Saucy, or you might not. I'm still trying to figure if "Valesseka" is more motivated by her heart (sniff-sniff, tear-tear) or by greed.

Dun Dun Dun!

O Sauce! I have seen a few treacherous seeds being planted. Now you've spoiled the surprise. :p

Just have to think of more ways to thrill you.

About the stalking (or as some would call it: hunting) keep reading. :D

Eomer of the Rohirrim 08-16-2006 07:37 AM

Just saw your post in the game thread, Valier. Had not realised that night-voting could be tactical. Not sure if it's morally right. I've been voting for my favourite posts and will continue to do so.

Thinlómien 08-16-2006 11:06 AM

Posted it, finally. :)

Seeds? What seeds? Well "Valesseka" is a farmer, Eomer, if there are any seeds they will be prone to grow futher--MWAHAHAHA! But what is this about the stalking/hunting/keep on read'n? Is this not as... unintentional as I first presumed?

*dramatic cord*

This could quickly turn into something of a Middle Earth soap opera, which might be quite amusing. If anything, Saucy might get hooked. With this said, I have to ask... Does Eomerleo have an evil twin? :D

Eomer of the Rohirrim 08-16-2006 12:11 PM

Nogrod 08-17-2006 07:09 PM

Just to raise a further issue over spm's question...

If we want to play rougher - which surely could do some good to energize the game - how could we make it "fairly" eg. not depending on the timezones (when someone is awake) or to RL bussinesses (someone being more at ease than someone else)?

I mean: could I write a post now (myself being awake and Glirdy being offline for whatever reason) where Novgorod discovers Glirdingo and decides to sink all the elf's belongings to the swamp leaving Glirdan's character with no spare clothes or food or arms to the end of the game (if he doesn't acquire ones during the later stages of the game)? Or just killing him with his blade?

That would not sound fair in any sense.

Or how about if I write a trap to f.ex. Glirdingo during the Day-phase, would Glirdy write his character to fall into it after I have written it open into the thread? Why on earth would he be so fool? I could PM my trap-idea to the mod, surely. But with at best 1/3 possibility of a possible trap being sprung, should I really just keep on trying to make them every night, describing nice plots which probably won't bite anyway? Or what would be the procedure?

Yeah. I would enjoy some more action, but how to do it fairly?

Glirdan 08-17-2006 07:22 PM

See, if this was a true RPG, I would whole heartedly agree. What I think SpM was getting at, however, is where is the competition? We're all being WAY to friendly to each other. The only reason I was friendly with Ka's character is becuase she's an Ent. If she wasn't, I'd have a different approach to her.

For instance, Nogrod, you're a Man from Dale who doesn't really know about Lorien. I also don't really know about Dale. What I do know, however, is that the Men of Dale are friendly with Dwarves. Seeing as I am an Elf and do not trust Dwarves and therefore would not trust you as much either, Man though you be. And then, in the Day, if we are still going on the same trail as each other, we would perhaps do something to slow the other down? Like hide the others belongings or something of the sort. Just to slow them down a little. That's what I think we should do.

Is that what you were kind of going for Saucy? A little less fuzzy and a little more competitiveness? If not well, the sabatoge idea sounds good! :D :p

Valier 08-17-2006 08:11 PM

Well I don't see how we can do this and keep it fair, we mods had thought of these things beforehand and they just made it too complicated.

This is why I add Eoln....He would not allow such goings-on from the adventurers, he was paid remember, to make sure you all get there in one piece, well mostly :p So unless someone can come up with a fair idea the sabotage is out.

Glirdan 08-17-2006 09:22 PM

Kind of figured that. But what about my other idea? To just slow them down, but it doesn't effect how far they travel? Is that alright??

Reverse and ditto. ;)

I am going to have to agree with Glirdan about the streak of friendship that seems to be abound here. Besides the obvious fact that most of us right now are rather spaced apart, soon, if the map doesn't fail to point out, character interaction is most likely going to increase during the nightly hour period. Since this is in the mirth section of the downs, some form of humour or entertainment is expected to occur.
Taking in the obvious and putting it aside for a second, some form of competition between characters would be nice to occur, since this is a race, and not everyone I am sure is going to return to their home in arda on a golden sunset of riches and many happy smiles. That would just defeat the point. While having characters kill off each other, or seriously wound them to where they are defunct from the game and such is quite too far to be taken, slight impediment to their ease of travel does not seem to be pushing the boundaries too much. Nothing on the level of "A gigantic Oliphant is going to crush you, oh nooo!", but on a smaller scale, for example, "It seems sharing a camp wasn't a good idea, most of <character name> food was gladly eaten by <other character>." or another such thing. This doesn't cause any more harm than making the player having to include problem solving skills to get around the problem along in their post, thus leading to something more interesting to read along with their scenario.

Sorry if I sound like the King from Alice in Wonderland, I am just making a slight suggestion, if I may.

Valesse 08-18-2006 02:54 AM

I'm in favor of sabotaging, obviously, since I just left my character to brood about it, but if we were actually officially able to sabotage other players, I think it would have to be more regulated, or else the early dwarf will get all the blueberries... in a sense.

Naria certainly did problem solve that one, though! And how! :D

Right, but anyways... I mean...I usually am awake to see every transition, so compared to poor, poor Eomer I have this HUGE opprotunity to constantly do all sorts of things to his character. But knowing that, it just wouldn't be as fun.

What if, when there is a pair at night, those involved would have a mod roll a dice/flip a coin... draw virtual straws... something which would define who will be the unfortunate victim, and/or in the case of a larger group, also the conspiritor. Even then... the luck long-straw would have the ability to forgo it entirely.

My only concern past that, is it puts even MORE work on the mods in an already labor instensive game.

Valier 08-18-2006 11:17 AM

I really like your idea Valesse!!!! This Mod dicerolling will do just nicely as I can do it when the night begins....

Lets put it to a vote shall we

Vote yes if you would like me to roll a die each night phase for players who are at the same rest point, to see who will be the sabotagee and sabotager. Vote no if you don't like the whole idea.

Sleepy Ranger 08-18-2006 11:26 AM

I vote no. I've got something else in mind but I still have a few kinks to work out before I post it.

Nogrod 08-19-2006 05:15 AM

I vote yes.

With the reservation that there should be something like common agreement about the level of damage that can be inflicted and which are the consequences of them. This sabotage idea shouldn't become too decisive factor in the game (like: I take all the food the other competitor has and so s/he can't move at all the next day because of the search for food etc.).

Glirdan 08-19-2006 09:01 AM

Hello?? Mod's?? When do we get our next scenario? Cuz I need to do mine within the next 6 hours as I will not have computer access till tomorrow late at night. And there's also others in this game who need their beauty sleep.

Gil-Galad 08-19-2006 10:25 AM

++yes

that'll make it interesting...

Valier 08-19-2006 01:57 PM

NOTICE TO ALL PLAYERS: THIS DAY WILL BE EXTENDED BY 24 HOURS. IT WILL END AT 1 AM CST TOMORROW. WE MODS ENCOURAGE YOU ALL TO FINISH AS QUICKLY AS YOU CAN, SO IF EVERYONE IS DONE EARLIER WE WILL START THE DAY THEN. THIS WILL ONLY HAPPEN FOR TODAY, I DON'T WANT THIS HAPPENING ALL THE TIME OR ELSE WE WILL NEVER FINISH!! :p

Glirdan 08-19-2006 02:21 PM

Done. Hope that was good. :)

Nogrod 08-19-2006 04:39 PM

Sorry that my post kind of got out of the hand and is longer than I thought it would be.

But this challenge was so much fun!

Happy to oblige! :D

Naria 08-21-2006 01:37 AM

I'm really sorry and really late with my post. Please forgive me.

I got messed up with the time change thing...Moddess Valier, do what you must...if you must. :(

Glirdan 08-21-2006 12:22 PM

Aiee!! I'm back from camp! But I hope I'm not too late. I'll PM my vote in a minute.

Valier 08-21-2006 06:07 PM

All players.....We have a three way tie between Ransley, Novgorod and Gil-Galad.
Everyone but them will revote!!! I will extend the night phase until 1pm CST tomorrow. All players will vote for one of these three. If the vote is still a tie the Mods will vote. If you do not revote you will be penalized. The three tied players will not have to revote.

Thinlómien 08-22-2006 03:11 AM

I'm not so aware of the American timezones... Does that mean +12h? Or more?

Roa_Aoife 08-22-2006 06:34 AM

It's +12 hours, to when Day 6 starts at 7pm GMT. Essentially, you have a 36 hour night.

Rune Son of Bjarne 08-22-2006 11:59 AM

To All Players: When you reach my zone, all direction and questions must be send to Valier and the scenarios/answers will be send by her. The reason for this is that I will only be able to answer every other day, due to work.

Valier 08-24-2006 01:14 AM

Seeing as almost half of the players did not finish before the Day end, being the wonderful Mod I am, I have decided to extend this day until 1pm CST tomorrow. That is 12 hours from now.

Since this is unfair to the players that did finish on time, the players who did not finish will be penalized. The penalty is that you are not eligible for the day 6 favorite post. If you do not finish your post by 1pm CST tomorrow you will also stay where you are until you finish your post.

I expect from now on that players will notify me if there is ANY problems and they are unable to get their post done on time.

Penalized players

Gil-galad
Glirdan
Eomer
Naria

So when it is time to vote, these players cannot receive votes.

Thinlómien 08-24-2006 02:05 AM

Thanks, Noggie, for posting my post. :)

(I had problems with my internet access and couldn't find a proper computer in time so I had to have Noggie putting my post up... Hopefully that won't cause any problems.)

Glirdan 08-24-2006 06:46 AM

I am sooooooo sorry!!!! I had absolutely no way of getting on the computer yesterday at all! Firstly, my dad was doing something on the computer for about five hours which disabled anyway of doing anything. And then him and my mom had the computer the rest of the night. So I had no way of getting on. I'll *crosses finger* hopefully have it done today. Again, I am sooooooooooooooooooooooos sorry!!!! :( Don't beat me with an Orlando Bloom film!!!

Eomer of the Rohirrim 08-24-2006 11:55 AM

For anyone interested:

I was online Tuesday night, obviously just before Day 6 started. Couldn't get back on until next night to do all the admin. stuff. Was fast asleep by the time I could write anything. Was still asleep by Day's ending.

Gil-Galad 08-24-2006 07:25 PM

sorry, i didn't read the awnsers to my 3 questions till right now, when i just got on after getting home from school, so my apoligies, just that me and Roa were on on the wrong times

4:30 PM Mountain till about 4:30 PM again Mountain i was eitehr working, sleeping or at school

and i did not receive my Anwsers till after 5 PM, which i was not able to check at

Valier 08-25-2006 11:19 AM

I am not sure if I made myself clear....All players must still vote!!! You just may not vote for the 4 penalized players. The penalized players still have to vote as well. This night ends in two hours and I am still missing over half the votes.

Valier 08-25-2006 01:03 PM

This night will end shortly, but I thought I should address a few things first. Now I understand that RL sometimes gets in the way, but what I want some players to understand is that when you do not participate in the daily posting or nightly voting, it effects the good players that did. I understand there has been a lot of problems with players receiving their scenarios or answers to their questions late. Now I apologize for this, but if there was a problem with you getting your post done because of this reason it would be great if you would let me know, so that you won't be penalized.

Now I want to apologize to anyone who thinks I am being to harsh or "yelling" at players. I have no desire for the game to end early, nor am I getting stressed out. But some players seem to be able to do their game duties even though they too are busy. I just want to stress that all this non participation is recking havoc on the preset rules and regulations we set up in the beginning. Now I know that things change, but think....is it really fair for the participating players?

Please don't take this the wrong way!!! I love this game, and for the most part all players have be doing exemplary!!! I just want people to use courtesy!! If there is a problem let me know!! How are we supposed to make things run smoothly when there are so many missing links? :)

Again keep up the great posting!! We are nearing the end, so lets make this game something to remember!! :D

Valier 08-27-2006 01:19 AM

*sigh* I am having computer problems so I am extending the night again for 12 hours. Day 7 will end at 1pm CST tomorrow. Sorry if this is an inconvienience for anyone....I promise I will have everything fixed by tomorrow. :D

EDIT: Valesse your pm box is full!!!!!!

Valesse 08-27-2006 09:40 AM

Your computer and I are in kahoots, Valier, and yes... its full, but I'll be cleanning it out here in a moment.

I wasn't expecting more than one PM in a 7 hour period, but got three. Yikes!

Eomer of the Rohirrim 08-27-2006 01:20 PM

Sorry! Posted this in the game thread. Deleted it swiftly.

I'm really confused as to how the players are where they are. It doesn't seem to add up to me.
