Hello
Im back from my vacation. Im a female. Ill be 29 in July. I didnt really start being obsessed with LOTR until December of last year.

Daniel Telcontar 06-01-2002 11:04 AM

Feeling the group pressure to reveal my age, I finally give in and admit that I'm only 16. And as the brighter ones would guess I'm a male. (I mean, who many females go by the name of Daniel?)

akhtene 06-03-2002 05:26 PM

Just human aged 34 (will be 35 next Monday) So "Happy Birthday" song is welcome
I first got hold of the "Lord of the Rings" in 1985 (how old was I then?)I loved it at once because it was so different from what I had read before - entire new world, mysterious peoples(?)and lands, noble characters, heroic quest, love and sacrifice. None of my friends somehow are really keen on the book, though many have read it. When I'm asked now what I have found in it, I really can't put it in words. It's all on the level of emotions (do I sound like a grown-up?) I just love it !!!

Ithaeliel 06-03-2002 05:45 PM

ME age is... oh, say, about 389. Pretty young.
Reality- Elf female, 14

Maikadilwen 06-07-2002 02:47 PM

Well, I guess I'll have to step forward as well. I'm female, 24. Actually FOTR opened on my b-day so you can probably imagine the b-day party. And it's going to be this year as well.
I first discovered Tolkien..... Hmmm, actually I don't remember. Would you believe that? The books have just always been there. Though I haven't owned them myself until recently.

Tirned Tinnu 09-03-2002 11:11 PM

Female, 38. Discovered Tolkien thanks to Ranking and Bass's The Hobbit cartoon. Began reading soon after. Was given LOTR at 11, ignored them till 13-16 yrs, adored them! Took specialty English course, FOTR, got an A in high school. Met fellah who liked to read them aloud, was hooked completely. Read Sil on my own, Unfinished tales at the library - brought tissues, people thought I was nuts...
Continuing to read...all .... gosh, it gets harder as you delve deeper! I love it though.

LadyElbereth 09-04-2002 09:54 AM

Hullo everyone! i was reading all of the posts and it seems its been a while since people have posted here. anyway, i'm fourteen yearsold and of course, a female. i read "The Hobbit" when i was seven yearsold, but i wasn't very interested in it, not to mention didn't have a clue what they were talking about (who could blame me? i was seven!). anyway, i discovered the wonderful world of Tolkien a few months ago and i just finished reading "FOTR" and "The Unfinished Tales", right now i'm reading the "Silmarillion". I'm already obsessed with LOTR and i still haven't read "TTT" and "ROTK". Nice to meet everyone and i'm happy to say i love being dead at the Barrow Downs!

All I am going to say is that I grew up with the Don Bluth's(sp? must forgive me) version of the Hobbit. I am also younger then the mountains and two years older then my car.

Samwise 09-04-2002 01:34 PM

Tirned Tinnu, welcome to the 'Downs! Rankin-Bass' "The Hobbit"--yep. My first inrtroduction to Tolkien too---watched it several times over my childhood though that version of Gollum really creeped me out....

Armadoin 09-06-2002 02:01 PM

I am 15 years old and discovered Tolkien about 5 months ago. I have read Lotr 6 times and the Sil three times; pretty good, huh?

Guinevere 09-06-2002 02:08 PM

Hullo everyone !

I am about as old as child of the 7th age, so she`s not the only "grandmother" on the downs!
The difference is, I only discovered Tolkien last year, with 5O ! I now wonder why on earth I hadn`t heard about him before, (I read a lot of English books and I stayed in England in the USA in the seventies, but none of my friends and teachers mentioned him...)
It seems that nearly everybody else started reading Tolkien as teenagers. Well, better late than never !!
It was really through my son (then 15)who read LotR (in German) that I became interested. I read the Hobbit, found it delightful, read LotR and was immediatly spellbound! Hardly ever have I been so moved and fascinated by any book. Since then I read anything by or on Tolkien that I can lay hands on. I finished the Silmarillion, read "Tree and leaf", a biography, then Tom Shippey`s "Tolkien , author of the century". Now I`ve ordered and got Tolkiens letters (after so many interesting quotations from these here on the downs i decided I MUST have them) and next I`ll read UT.
None of my friends shares my craze, so I`m ever so glad to have discovered the Barrowdowns!

Hope I haven`t bored you with this too long post... Namarië ! Guinevere

maleliel 09-06-2002 02:19 PM

I'm female and 15, 16 on October 1st though!!! I read The Hobbit age 13 in my English class because my teacher really liked it. After that I read LotR on my teachers recommendation and loved it. I read the Silm only recently and am currently half way though UT!!!

Galadrie1 09-06-2002 02:59 PM

i'm 13, but i'm gonna be 14 on October 23rd (yay!)... i discovered Tolkien in grade 4 when we watched the animated movie and the teacher read it to our class (she didn't read the last chapter for some reason, though, and I waited about a year until I got it from the library and read the rest of it ).
I heard about LotR when my brother got into the books.. hmm... I guess 3 years ago.. I'm not sure. Anyway, I thought he was kinda dorky for being so obsessed over a series of books, and now that I'm obsessed with them he thinks I'm the dork!
Anyway, I started reading LotR about two weeks before the movie came out in theatres, and I finished in mid-March (I know, this seems like a long time, but I kinda stopped reading FotR for a couple weeks after I saw the movie. But I read RotK in 5 days, so there! )
I'm gonna read the Silm as soon as I can get a copy! (Must..get...money....)

(hope I haven't bored you all to life with this post )

Wow! And I thought I had a lot of books! Lucky you. I could never find enough time to read that much.

Anyways, I'm a female 14 year old and am in 9th grade in my junior high school. I began reading The Hobbit the day before FOTR premiered and finished that book and LOTR in about 10 days.

Aylwen Dreamsong 09-06-2002 04:37 PM

Hi! 13-Female....Yay! I'm a big eighth grader now...I've loved lotr since I was...uhhh, well I got the books for my 12th birthday from my dad so...a year and a half? I don't know. But I always thought it was cool because one of my favorite teachers (Language arts, 7th grade) started putting up all his old pictures and posters of lotr a few months before the movie came out, and ALL the other teachers started getting into it too, so now I know that kids may actually have something in common with those people! Wow.

Frieda 09-06-2002 06:48 PM

I'm female and 18.

Lossenavariel 09-06-2002 07:13 PM

Jeli Baggins 09-07-2002 02:27 PM

hellu! i am 14, 15 on oct. 28th....wow a lot of you have b-days in oct.!
neway, i was in 8th grade when the High School was goin to put on The Hobbit play. *i really admired the guy who played Bilbo!!!!* and i decided to read the book, so i would understand it. then, the next month, lotr: fotr was coming out, and i thought i would only like The Hobbit, so didn't read it until Dec. (a month later ) it then when i found out that's where i get my traits of height, hairy feet, curly hair, and nervousness around any "big people"!
All of you who got to read it in english, i greatly envy you!!!! I would get a 111 A+ if i did anything to do w/ Tolkien! (instead of Anne Frank or the Red Badge of Courage!!!! )
Maybe one day my teachers will understand any Tolkien books are the only books to read!

by the way, i'm very mad i wasn't a fressman when they did that play!!!!
