What was the name for the Hither Shores, and where were they? |
The Hither Shores is another name for Middle-Earth.
I'm looking for something a bit more specific.
Well, they're Eldarin names.
The "Hither Shores" is used to refer to a more specific area of Middle Earth ...
Neverast?
Nevrast is the name that I am looking for, but where were they?
As in the song of Earendil, the "Hither Shores" is referring to all of ME. Maybe specifically that where mortals are, but that could be said to be anywhere. It's used once in the tale of Numenor, but with more bearing placed on the actualy meaning of the word "hither" than anything else.
Ah, I bet you do mean specifically where mortals were don't you? |
Nevrast means Hither Shores. So I am looking for the location of Nevrast for the final part of the answer.
northwestern coast of Beleriand?
Wait wait, Nevrast is the "hither shore". That means something totally different from the "Hither Shores". The Hither shores is a term referring to all of ME, but specifically where men inhabit.
Hmm, having checked the index to my copy of the Silmarillion, I see that you are right, Beren. Just goes to show that you can't always rely on the ol' Complete Tolkien Companion. First time it's let me down, though.
But, Earwen gave both answers that I was looking for, so it's your turn next, O elf maid. |
Quick and easy.
Give me four names for Aragorn? |
Ellesar and Elfstone (by Galadriel and people of Gondor)
Strider (in Bree) Longshanks (by Sam) Wingfoot (by Eomer) |
correct
What was the "red-hill-land"?
Just as a side note: Sam didn't name Aragorn 'Longshanks'... Bill Ferny did
Ooh, Beren's getting his movies and his books mixed up! (happens to the best of us, I should know )
Anyway, red-hill-land... I will venture a guess: caran- red dol- hill Cardolan- red-hill-land? Sophia |
Quote:
You're correct Sophia, it is Cardolan. Nice guess. |
Who was "Elf-Foam"?
Elwing.
Nope... she was "Star-Spray" I believe.
Stops. Feels stupid. Alters question. "Elf-rain"... who was "Elf-Rain"? Apologizes. [ July 10, 2003: Message edited by: Sophia the Thunder Mistress ] |
