Precisely

elven maiden Earwen 04-11-2003 10:16 PM

What is Soronśmė, who made it, with what, and what does it mean?

tulkas 04-11-2003 10:41 PM

Soronume is a constellation made by Varda with the silver dews from the vats of Telperion. It means, 'Eagle of the West'

tulkas 04-12-2003 12:15 AM

if i don't get a new question in by tomorrow then someone else can do it

tulkas 04-12-2003 12:30 AM

haven't been told i'm right yet, so i can't post one yet, but the above post applies

elven maiden Earwen 04-12-2003 06:32 PM

correct you are.

tulkas 04-12-2003 10:22 PM

What is Karningul and what does it mean?

alaklondewen 04-13-2003 07:25 AM

It means 'Deep-cloven-valley' or Rivendell.

tulkas 04-13-2003 09:44 PM

perfect alaklondewen

alaklondewen 04-14-2003 08:04 PM

Thank you, it's not often one reaches perfection.

Okay, give me literal meaning/language/another name.

Kūd-dūkan

Beren87 04-14-2003 08:12 PM

Hobbits, my dear Alak.

alaklondewen 04-14-2003 08:14 PM

Yes, dear, but you are forgetting the first two questions: Literal meaning and language.

Beren87 04-14-2003 08:35 PM

Ah, I took the slashes to mean "either-or"

Hole-Dweller/Rohirric/Hobbits

alaklondewen 04-14-2003 09:06 PM

You are absolutely correct! Please proceed.

Beren87 04-15-2003 03:32 PM

What was the name of the event where the Mayor of the Shire was elected?

The Saucepan Man 04-15-2003 04:34 PM

The Free Fair, which was held every seven years on the White Downs.

elven maiden Earwen 06-24-2003 05:52 PM

Mr. Saucepan Man would you like to continue?

The Saucepan Man 06-24-2003 06:17 PM

Why not.

What was the name for the Hither Shores, and where were they?

Beren87 06-24-2003 06:35 PM

The Hither Shores is another name for Middle-Earth.

The Saucepan Man 06-24-2003 07:29 PM

I'm looking for something a bit more specific.

Beren87 06-24-2003 07:34 PM

Well, they're Eldarin names.

The Saucepan Man 06-25-2003 07:53 PM

The "Hither Shores" is used to refer to a more specific area of Middle Earth ...

elven maiden Earwen 06-25-2003 08:14 PM

Neverast?

The Saucepan Man 06-25-2003 08:16 PM

Nevrast is the name that I am looking for, but where were they?

Beren87 06-25-2003 08:19 PM

As in the song of Earendil, the "Hither Shores" is referring to all of ME. Maybe specifically that where mortals are, but that could be said to be anywhere. It's used once in the tale of Numenor, but with more bearing placed on the actualy meaning of the word "hither" than anything else.

Ah, I bet you do mean specifically where mortals were don't you?

The Saucepan Man 06-26-2003 06:41 AM

Nevrast means Hither Shores. So I am looking for the location of Nevrast for the final part of the answer.

elven maiden Earwen 06-26-2003 11:36 AM

northwestern coast of Beleriand?

Beren87 06-26-2003 02:52 PM

Wait wait, Nevrast is the "hither shore". That means something totally different from the "Hither Shores". The Hither shores is a term referring to all of ME, but specifically where men inhabit.

The Saucepan Man 06-26-2003 06:59 PM

Hmm, having checked the index to my copy of the Silmarillion, I see that you are right, Beren. Just goes to show that you can't always rely on the ol' Complete Tolkien Companion. First time it's let me down, though.

But, Earwen gave both answers that I was looking for, so it's your turn next, O elf maid.

elven maiden Earwen 06-26-2003 07:01 PM

Quick and easy.

Give me four names for Aragorn?

Beren87 06-26-2003 07:13 PM

Ellesar and Elfstone (by Galadriel and people of Gondor)

Strider (in Bree)

Longshanks (by Sam)

Wingfoot (by Eomer)

elven maiden Earwen 06-26-2003 10:35 PM

correct

Beren87 06-27-2003 03:38 PM

What was the "red-hill-land"?

Telchar 06-28-2003 06:46 PM

Just as a side note: Sam didn't name Aragorn 'Longshanks'... Bill Ferny did

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-03-2003 12:32 PM

Ooh, Beren's getting his movies and his books mixed up! (happens to the best of us, I should know )

Anyway, red-hill-land... I will venture a guess:

caran- red
dol- hill

Cardolan- red-hill-land?

Sophia

Beren87 07-07-2003 06:33 AM

Egad! *throws his DVD out the window*

You're correct Sophia, it is Cardolan. Nice guess.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-07-2003 07:22 AM

Who was "Elf-Foam"?

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-08-2003 02:53 AM

Elwing.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-10-2003 09:51 AM

Nope... she was "Star-Spray" I believe.

Stops. Feels stupid. Alters question. "Elf-rain"... who was "Elf-Rain"?

Apologizes.
