No, those are not what I had in mind. I wouldn't really count any of them as Battles, more skirmishes (or, in Smaug's case, a rampage).

So, there are still more ...

The Saucepan Man 05-06-2003 07:42 AM

*Bump*

How many recorded Battles in ME have a name that is water-related and name each of them?
Quote:

Battle of Bywater
Battles of the Fords of Isen
Battle of the Crossings of Isen
Battle of the Crossings of Poros
Battle of the Crossing of Erui
Battle of Unnumbered Tears (Hey tears are water too)
Quote:

Hmm, you got the tricksy ones (Isen x2, Bywater and Unnumbered Tears), but there are more ...
Anyone care to have a go at naming the remaining water-related battles?

Hint: One was named on the previous page.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-15-2003 07:11 PM

Battle of the Fields of Celebrant, then, since Celebrant is the name of the river. And if we've decided that Battle of the Gladden Fields was indeed a battle, then that's one too, for the Gladden River is certainly water.

It's all I can give you for now .

Sophia

The Saucepan Man 05-15-2003 07:47 PM

Yup, both those are on my list. But the list is not yet complete ...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-16-2003 07:36 PM

How about the Kinslaying at Alqualonde? "lond" means harbor?

The Saucepan Man 05-17-2003 09:12 PM

Actually, that's not one of the ones that I had in mind, but it fits. Yet, the list still remains incomplete ...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-17-2003 11:58 PM

Battle of the Havens of Sirion, where the Sons of Feanor attacked Tuor's people?

That's all I can find...

Sophia

The Saucepan Man 05-18-2003 07:19 PM

OK, there is one more that I have in mind. It is named after a river ...

The Saucepan Man 05-24-2003 08:19 PM

Surely someone must be able to name the last Battle that I have in mind ...?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-24-2003 08:50 PM

I have looked and looked and still find nothing.

Finwe 05-26-2003 04:57 PM

The Battle of the Lhun? (When Cirdan and Gil-galad held the forces of Sauron at bay, by the blood of their people... (Yeesh! I'm turning into Boromir)).

The Saucepan Man 05-27-2003 11:39 AM

No.

Think of where a great force of Men came to the aid of Elves in a time of need.

Finwe 05-29-2003 02:57 PM

The Battle of the Fens of Serech, where Barahir came to the aid of Finrod and his men!

The Saucepan Man 05-30-2003 07:24 AM

No. Not the one that I'm thinking of.

Confused? Goth law!

Finwe 05-30-2003 08:17 AM

The only one that I can think of is the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, where Hurin and Huor came to the aid of Turgon.

The Saucepan Man 05-30-2003 06:22 PM

The Battle of Unnumbered Tears is on my list, but has been mentioned already. There was a clue in my last post.

lathspell 06-02-2003 12:57 PM

The Drowning of Numenor, though that ain't really a battle and might have been mentioned before... sorry, I had no time to look for it.

greetings,
lathspell

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-02-2003 07:34 PM

There must have been a battle at Gwathlo (Greyflood), as that's what Goth Law is confused .

Sophia

The Saucepan Man 06-03-2003 04:48 AM

Yes, indeed the Battle of Gwathlo ensued when the fleets of Numenor arrived to break Sauron's hold over Eriador.

So, having got the last one on my list, I think that it must be your turn, Sophia.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-03-2003 03:33 PM

Wow, Saucepans that was quite a question. I think I deserve the "Perseverance award" at the very least .

Will be right with you in the matter of the next question, as soon as I am able to think of one that will take a few minutes to answer. Don't bet on a month though.

Name five battles whose proper names are in Elvish.

Lyra Greenleaf 06-08-2003 05:24 AM

Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Dagor Dagorath, Dagor Aglareb, Dagor Bragollach, Dagor-nuin-Giliath.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-08-2003 01:52 PM

Perfection, O Most Diaphanous of Dryads... do carry on!

Sophia

Lyra Greenleaf 06-08-2003 03:51 PM

Thank you, oh smelliest of flowers. That didn't come out right did it?

Name two other names for "The Battle of the Mines of Moria"

Lyra Greenleaf 06-09-2003 03:11 AM

Well, you got the right ideas across-Nanduhirion and Azanulbizar it is.
Proceed, Sophia!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-12-2003 02:42 AM

After which skirmish was the name of a river changed?

Sophia

piosenniel 06-12-2003 03:02 AM

Beren led a force of Laiquendi to defeat a band of the Dwarves of Nogrod on the banks of the River Ascar, the northernmost of the seven rivers of Ossiriand.

The Dwarves had sacked Doriath, the great Sindarin Kingdom of Beleriand, and the golden treasure of Thingol's Menegroth there was emptied into the river.

The river was known thereafter as Goldenbed, or Rathlóriel in Elvish.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-14-2003 07:34 PM

Yes, Pio. Apologies for the lateness of the reply.

Sophia

piosenniel 06-15-2003 01:42 PM

Turning north, his ranks reinforced by the defeated and fleeing northern allies, the Penultimate came upon the foe.

Surprised, the foe fell, driven to their watery deaths beside the Battle Plain.

Never again did they dare to stand against the defenders of the Southern Kingdom.

Finwe 06-15-2003 09:20 PM

Was this when Sauron drove back the Last Alliance initially? When Malgalad and his forces perished in the Dead Marshes?

piosenniel 06-16-2003 12:51 AM

No, this was not The Battle of Dagorlad.

Though, the Dead Marshes were involved.

Gwaihir the Windlord 06-16-2003 04:41 AM

It wouldn't be anything to do with the Wainriders?

Finwe 06-16-2003 08:34 AM

The Battle of the Fields of Celebrant?

piosenniel 06-16-2003 10:54 AM

Why would you think it wouldn't have anything to do with the Wainriders?

Sorry - not Celebrant.

piosenniel 06-18-2003 09:48 PM

Major Hint: This is the battle which involved the Wainriders - 1944 TA.

Led by the penultimate (next to the last) King of Gondor (before the rule of the Stewards)

Lindolirian 06-19-2003 09:34 PM

The Battle of the Camp.

piosenniel 06-20-2003 12:18 AM

You have it, Lindolirian! Carry on!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-03-2003 12:39 PM

I miss this thread Lind... (hint hint)
