Yay!

This is the "fish" riddle, Lady_Bain.
Quote:

Though precious it looks, a shiny stone,
It was not born in the earth.
It speaks all day, but no sound is heard,
And no matter how far it goes,
It will always end up in the same place.
Several pages ago, someone asked this one. I found it in my book and didn't have a corresponding answer for it, so I posted it asking for the answer. I then asked Sam if she was the one who posted it originally, but she told me it wasn't her's, but Greenbow's. Hope this helps!

Lady_Báin 04-17-2002 11:10 AM

okay at the risk of sounding really stupid I'm going to ask if someone can take me through the fish riddle step by step cause honestly i don't get it at all sorry but this is just going to stay at the back of my mind til I get it. I hate not understanding things

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 11:16 AM

Oh, I didn't know that was what you meant

Though precious it looks, a shiny stone,
(Its scales are shiny)
It was not born in the earth.
(It was born in water)
It speaks all day, but no sound is heard,
(It opens and closes its mouth all the time)
And no matter how far it goes,
It will always end up in the same place.
(It can never leave its bowl or tank)

Is this better?

Belin 04-17-2002 02:11 PM

Pillows should not be hard, though..... Sorry, just playing. couldn't resist.

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 02:15 PM

Very funny, Belin. She's only joking around cause she knows the answer.... and, no, sadly, it is not a pillow

Bragolandune 04-17-2002 02:34 PM

well since pillow was wrong im gonna guess again...my boyfriend keeps telling me its a birdcage, so thats my guess.

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 02:39 PM

No, it's not a birdcage either

Bragolandune 04-17-2002 02:44 PM

a cloud?

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 02:58 PM

No....you're on the wrong track

Raefindel 04-17-2002 03:04 PM

What animal is that which in the morning goes on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening upon three?
A Man. When he's born, he crawls- 4 legs
When he grows, he walks on two
When he's old he uses a cane-3legs.

Nuranar 04-17-2002 03:05 PM

Anyamiex, yours is man, who when young crawls on all fours, walks on two during the prime of his life, and uses a cane when he is old.

Susan, is yours a window?

Nuranar 04-17-2002 03:06 PM

Way to go, Rae! Beat me by sixty seconds!

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 03:08 PM

No, it is not a window. Think organic...

Raefindel 04-17-2002 03:12 PM

Why don't you take my turn Nuranar, I can't think of a riddle to save my soul.

What's black and white and red all over?

Firladion Greenbow 04-17-2002 03:15 PM

What is dressed when night falls and undressed when day breaks?
Would I be right in saying A FIRE, Susan of Hambry?

Bragolandune 04-17-2002 03:17 PM

your eyes?

Firladion Greenbow 04-17-2002 03:18 PM

Oh yes, I almost forgot,

What is light as a feather, but no-one can hold it for long?

F.G.

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 03:30 PM

Why, your breath, Mr. Greenbow

and, yes "a fire" will do

I pass before the sun yet make no shadow. What am I?

Bragolandune 04-17-2002 03:33 PM

i dont get it... how is that a fire? can you explain it?

Susan Delgado 04-17-2002 03:47 PM

Surely
At night, one builds up sticks and other pieces of wood to build the fire. In the morning, the wood is all burned away, leaving nothing in its place but ash. It's simply a different use of the word "dressed" Substitute "built" and it'll work too.

I also would have accepted "a rose"(or other flower) because at night it closes over its delicate inner parts and in the morning opens again, exposing itself to the sunlight.

Lady_Báin 04-18-2002 08:51 AM

Black white and read all over? hmmmmm... maybe this is a ratorical(spl?) riddle but i am gonna bite a newspapper?

Lady_Báin 04-18-2002 08:53 AM

or maybe a bloody zebra eeeeewwwwwwwwwww!!!! (not the English bloody )

susan is yours a star or stars?

Susan Delgado 04-18-2002 09:35 AM

Nay, that be not it, Milady

Firladion Greenbow 04-18-2002 04:31 PM

To Susan, Thankee-sai, you speak true, the answer is indeed Breath.

as for
Quote:

I pass before the sun yet make no shadow. What am I?
I will not answer this just yet, but instead will give another.

Cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind the stars and beneath the hills.
Ends life and kills laughter.

What is it?

And NO Susan, your not answering it!

Lindolirian 04-18-2002 04:36 PM

"Easy! Dark, I suppose."
in the words of Mr. Bilbo Baggins himself

Firladion Greenbow 04-18-2002 05:05 PM

That is correct Lindolirian, the dark it is.

With no wings, I fly.
With no eyes, I see.
With no arms, I climb.
More frightening than any beast, stronger than any foe.
I am cunning, ruthless, and tall; in the end, I rule all.

What am I?

Aragorn Husband of Arwen 04-19-2002 07:42 AM

I've got another riddle!

You have seen me, and heard me.
But yet you have no seen me.
I come from an unknown place,
and go to an unknown place.

What am I?

Susan Delgado 04-19-2002 08:10 AM

Is it wind?

Samwise 04-19-2002 07:37 PM

Hm.....
Sam's ?th Riddle
---------------------------------------------
I can reach out and grab you
yet, I have no hands.
Often I can hurt a person,
but people come in my presence
without much fear, anyway.
What am I?
---------------------------------------------
Quote:

"What about the elves?" said Sam, too excited. "Can't we go and see them? "

Susan Delgado 04-19-2002 08:36 PM

Sam, is it love?

Don't forget mine, also

I pass before the sun yet make no shadow. What am I?

Tigerlily Gamgee 04-19-2002 11:00 PM

Susan, is the answer either darkness, the night or twilight?

Susan Delgado 04-20-2002 12:09 AM

Sorry, it's none of those.

Samwise 04-20-2002 01:00 PM

No, Susan, not love--
As for: "I pass before the sun..."
is it a cloud?
Quote:

"So my plan is all spoilt!" said Frodo. "It is no good trying to escape you. But I'm glad, Sam. It is plain that we were meant to go together. "

Kalimac 04-20-2002 01:54 PM

Hello, everyone! This thread has certainly grown since last time I was here...

Susan - this is probably out of left field but is the answer a witch? (If I remember correctly witches weren't supposed to be able to cast shadows. Or be photographed, for that matter).

Samwise - Is yours illness? It certainly grabs you quickly, anyway...

Raefindel 04-20-2002 01:57 PM

Hi, Kalimac! good to see you.

Susan, I'm stumped. That's a good riddle.

I have nothing pertinent to add, neither guesses nor further riddles. I think I'm riddles out.
