Telchar 09-28-2002 04:38 AM

No - as I said Lothiriel Silmarien is very close...

Isilya 09-28-2002 01:01 PM

They were all born in the third(?) age? I can't double check my answer right now, so this is a guess.

Telchar 09-28-2002 03:41 PM

you need to narrow it down a little Isilya or anyone for that matter.

Isilya 09-28-2002 07:29 PM

They were all born in the same year?

Telchar 09-29-2002 01:51 PM

No they were not.
And secondly I wanna add that while guessing is good, its it should still be based on just the smallest amount of insight - if insight is out for lunch - then try research - it is allowed to use the books - actually I inspire it - thats the way to learn more - if your wild shots hit now and again then you will soon forget why and how - but if you read up and earn your right to ask the next question, I think you'll feel hust a little more proud of yourself.

Cheers Telchar

Turambar 10-09-2002 12:38 PM

Telchar -- we seem to be stumped on this one.

Turambar 10-09-2002 01:01 PM

Were they all part of a "May-December" marriage (i.e. wife was much younger) ???

Telchar 10-09-2002 05:23 PM

hmmm It was that good either - but they were all born in the same decade 2900-2910 - anyone can take it from here...

Telchar 10-14-2002 02:09 PM

Somebody?? Please?

Lothiriel Silmarien 10-14-2002 06:05 PM

They were born within 3-4 years difference of each other.
Odo-1304
Drogo-1308
Gilraen-2907
Thengel-2905

Telchar 10-15-2002 12:21 AM

Yeah!!! Go on!

Lothiriel Silmarien 10-15-2002 12:53 PM

Rosie
Lothiriel
Melian
Arwen

Telchar 10-15-2002 02:21 PM

I have no clue at all unless maybe that they all married the man of their dreams after he had finished the quest of his life?

Lothiriel Silmarien 10-16-2002 12:57 PM

Nope, but pretty close..

hobbitlass 10-17-2002 06:19 AM

They all married a man who became kings or rulers over their respective lands.

Lothiriel Silmarien 10-17-2002 12:56 PM

Yea. I was hoping that it would last for more than 2 guesses! Your turn

hobbitlass 10-18-2002 12:29 PM

Oh my heck, I'm right!? I hardly ever get these. But, Telchar is the one who got things rolling...thanks.
Since I wasn't expecting to have to go next, please give me till tomorrow morning. I have to do some research. Then if 7:00 a.m. (E.S.T) comes and I haven't posted, I relinquish my turn.
Thank you all.

hobbitlass 10-18-2002 01:00 PM

Theoden
Eomer
Merry
Sam
Beorn

hobbitlass 10-22-2002 08:04 AM

I'm bringing this up to the top with a hint. I get the feeling that I am jinxed and kill off topics.

All of them have a thing in common that they had out of their possesion, at least for awhile. Some with their permission some without their permission. The people can be grouped as follows...

Beorn
Sam
Eomer

Merry
Theoden (at first)

Telchar 10-23-2002 02:13 AM

I dont think you're jinxed hobitlass - but you do give us a hard question Im speechless.

hobbitlass 10-23-2002 02:28 PM

Actually, I'm not sure if it's hard or just lame. And holler (anyone) if another clue is needed.

Or the answer if everyone is bored with this one.

hobbitlass 10-25-2002 05:35 AM

All right, I'm posting the answer so this game can go on (or get buried) cause I'm tired of checking back.

HORSES. They all had horses at one time or the other that was out of their "possesion" at least for awhile. Some with permission some without.

Eomer-lent Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas
Beorn-lent Gandalf and dwarves and Bilbo
Sam-let Bill the pony go at the mines of Moria

Merry-had horses stolen at the Prancing Pony
Theoden-(at first) Gandalf takes Shadowfax then Theoden gives Shadowfax to him freely.

Like I said, not sure if this was incredibly hard or incredibaly lame.

Turambar 10-25-2002 02:05 PM

It was a perfectly good question, hobbitlass - we shd have gotten it.

Lindolirian 10-30-2002 04:07 PM

It was a good question, but I also noticed that there were only three days in between the time of posting the original question and when you gave away the answer. Maybe you wouldn't be so "jinxed" if we had more time to think or to even visit the thread.

hobbitlass 11-03-2002 09:06 AM

I'm sorry, I guess I get too overzealous. What would be the proper time period?
Anyone can go ahead.

Nevtalathiel 11-03-2002 11:35 AM

Ok, in that case I have one:
 • Luthien
 • Aragorn
 • Gil-Galad
 • The Ring
 • Elbereth
 • Snowmane
 • Frodo

[ November 03, 2002: Message edited by: Nevtalathiel ]

Lostgaeriel 11-04-2002 09:11 PM

There is a song or verse about each of these persons, beasts or things in The Lord of the Rings.

Song of Beren and Luthien
Riddle of Strider (Aragorn)
The Fall of Gil-Galad
Verse of the Ring(s)
Elven hymns to Elbereth Gilthoniel
Snowmane's Epitaph
Frodo of the Nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom (which isn't actually written out in the book)

The problem with this answer is that there were also songs or verses about other persons, beasts, monsters and things in tLotR, so the list could be continued to include Earendil, Durin, Nimrodel, Goldberry, etc. So I'm pretty sure I have the wrong answer.

Nevtalathiel 11-05-2002 11:37 AM

No, you are correct, I'm just too lazy to try and remember and then type out all the people/beasts/things who have verses associated with them

Please proceed

Lostgaeriel 11-08-2002 11:04 PM

There is something in common linked to each of these clues. If I give you a straight list you'll have it in an instant. Even so...

My info is according to tLotR only.
 • one of the Three
 • the guards of the Court of the Fountain
 • Speak, friend and enter.
 • The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hopes end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee.
 • 'In his time the City was made more fair than it had ever been, even in the days of its first glory; and it was filled with trees and with fountains, and its gates ...'
 • 'Here's a pretty hobbit-skin to wrap an elven-princeling in.'

ElentariGreenleaf 11-09-2002 07:32 AM

All said by Gandalf? (I just wanna know if I'm right or not. I wouldn't be able to think up one of these!)

Lostgaeriel 11-09-2002 09:38 AM

No-o.

First of all, not all of the items in the list are quotes. They are just clues (riddles sorta) that will give you a list of 'Things' (not 'Persons, Beasts and Monsters' or 'Places').

If I actually named the Things, I think you would have the answer immediately. All are Things from The Lord of the Rings. And they have one Thing in common.

I think I should edit the list slightly:
 • one of the Three
 • the livery of the guards of the Court of the Fountain
 • Speak, friend and enter.
 • The days now are short. Either our hope cometh, or all hopes end. Therefore I send thee what I have made for thee.
 • "In his time the City was made more fair than it had ever been, even in the days of its first glory; and it was filled with trees and with fountains, and its gates were ------- -- ------- ..."
 • 'Here's a pretty hobbit-skin to wrap an elven-princeling in.'

Mithril!!

Nenya?
The black and "Silver" livery of the Guard
the mithril on the doors of Moria
The Standard of Arwen with mithril in it.
The new gates were made of mithril
bilbo's/frodo's mithril coat.

mordor136 11-09-2002 05:13 PM

Me thinks you got it

Lostgaeriel 11-09-2002 11:08 PM

Yes, Lindolirian, you got it. Each item was made of mithril (true-silver) or made with ithildin (which is made from mithril).

The Guard of the Citadel at the Court of the Fountain (and only there) wore helms made of mithril. Their surcoats may have been embroidered in true-silver - the text isn't specific in that.

The emblems and letters on Durin's Doors were made using ithildin or starmoon.

The new gates of the City were made of mithril and steel.

As far as I can find, the only other sure mention of mithril in the book is in Bilbo's Song of Earendil.

Well done. Go ahead.

Lindolirian 11-11-2002 06:51 PM

Yahoooooo!!!
easy one

Sauron
Aragorn
Denethor

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-12-2002 03:40 AM

Palantiri, they had all looked into a palintir at some stage.

Heh, it's all coming back to me...

Lindolirian 11-13-2002 04:16 PM

Yes, yes, I told you it was easy.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-14-2002 12:09 AM

Took me some thought.

Arathorn
Boromir
Tar-Pharazon
Elrond

Similarly, ths should be rather an easy one.

[ November 14, 2002: Message edited by: Gwaihir the Windlord ]

Lindolirian 11-14-2002 12:05 PM

Do you mean Ar-Pharazon the Golden?

if so, they all were leaders in oppositions against Sauron.
Arathorn- Captain of the Northern Dunedain.
Boromir- Son of the Steward of Gondor.
Ar-Pharazon- King of Numenor, attacked and took Sauron prisoner.
Elrond- leader in the Last Alliance, and in the War of the Ring.

but then something truly easy would be that they are all offspring of Earendil.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-16-2002 03:28 AM

Er yes sorry, Ar-Pharazon.

But nope, that wasn't what I was after.
