The Saucepan Man 03-27-2003 09:28 PM

Well, you're on the right track, alaklondewen, but that's not the answer that I'm looking for.

Silmarien 03-27-2003 09:52 PM

would that be Erendis?
the eldar were in gold Teleri ships

Her's is such a sad story.

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2003 09:56 PM

Hmm, she knew what she was getting into when she married him ...

But, you are correct, Silmarien, Erendis it is.

Silmarien 03-27-2003 10:47 PM

Use Lady of lights to fix an ire slim heart.

Arwen_Evenstar 03-28-2003 12:29 AM

Uh...anires? Is that something? Im just guessin...Usela? No idea...

Annunfuiniel 03-28-2003 01:13 AM

If you "fix" an ire slim you get Silmarien. So, my answer is Silmarien, Silmarien.

Silmarien 03-28-2003 07:22 PM

Well done Annunfuniel. I couldn't resist. You're turn.

Annunfuiniel 03-30-2003 01:34 PM

*bows* Thank you, Silmarien!

You may try to figure out who he is but that's useless; for no source reveals his true identity behind all those different names.

Lyra Greenleaf 03-30-2003 02:10 PM

for no-
FORN-
one of Tom Bombadil's names-
and we don't know what he is!

Annunfuiniel 03-30-2003 11:11 PM

You're quite correct, Lyra! And the floor is yours.
(Btw. congrats for the Ghost Prince(ss) title! )

Lyra Greenleaf 03-31-2003 12:13 PM

thank you. I want to go for cryptic so I may be a couple of days. but bear with me, I won't forget!

Lyra Greenleaf 04-02-2003 12:38 PM

Laura and you, or Fred, see the enchantress take the weight off her feet.

Diamond18 04-04-2003 03:24 PM

I'm totally stumped. But c'mon, there's got to be someone smarter around.

Lyra Greenleaf 04-05-2003 10:35 AM

Hint: the first bit is actual word in words, but different, the second is a cryptic clue! If noone gets it, I'll extend the first bit

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-08-2003 02:51 AM

is a clue in order yet, Lyra?

Annunfuiniel 04-08-2003 08:01 AM

It has to be Lay of something but I'm not sure of what... Lay of Nimrodel??
Oh, and if I use only the first bit I get Lay of Anor but I doubt there even exists such a song!
Need more clues me thinks!

Lyra Greenleaf 04-08-2003 12:54 PM

Lay is absolutely right. The second part is a clue to the person. Think name meanings...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-08-2003 01:17 PM

Lay of Luthien? Luthien means Enchantress...

Lyra Greenleaf 04-10-2003 01:02 PM

Yup, thats it. I don't think my talents lie in making up riddles!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-10-2003 02:05 PM

A first try at this game, and not a very good one I'm afraid...

a phrase in a phrase:

In Fla. me and Shelly go for the new estimates.

Sophia

alaklondewen 04-10-2003 04:52 PM

Is it 'Flame of the West'?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-13-2003 01:07 PM

It is. (that was so badly written I didn't know if anyone would get it... *gulps* I think I'm better at anagrams )

Sophia

I'm really sorry, but I'm just going to go and steal the turn, because it has ben 10 days, no less.

Right.

So....

COMPETITION!!!!! We invite YOU, the layperson to try and win J5 by finding the odd word out of this set:
faschism, august, one, hen, German, wedlock, and valinor.
For full rules, send and SAE to our address.
Closing date for entries, 30th April 2003

The Saucepan Man 04-23-2003 08:06 AM

Hmm. Good one, Beautiful Soup. Is it by any chance ...

faschism, august

... Smaug?

Edit: Mind you, I also found Stonehenge and Manwe in there:

august, one, hen, German, wedlock

Now I'm confused.

Does that make Valinor the odd word out because it doesn't form part of another word?

Don't want to be rude, but it's fascism. I was told that in essays a couple of times actually!

BeautifulSoup 04-27-2003 06:13 AM

Actually, I was just picking words to suit my word-hiding. But I now see how interesting a discusion it would make, actually picking out the answer. Aaaanyway, you are correct, Saucepan Man. Either Smaug or Manwë was acceptable, and Stonehenge was just a random idea of mine. So there you go.

The Saucepan Man 04-27-2003 07:52 PM

How one day makes a difference! Yesterday, I was sitting on the beach, throwing pebbles into the waves rolling into shore and marvelling at the beauty of the sun glinting upon the surface of the sea. But today, alas, I am back in the smoky city, sitting on a dirty noisy train, with nothing but rows of pallid grey buildings to act as my backdrop.

Nuranar 04-28-2003 12:02 PM

Saucepan, I've been working on this ever since you posted it...I've studied it during computer science class! Can you give some kind of hint on the direct you're going with it? The last few words in words seem more riddle-ish, so I'm lost to know what to do now.

The Saucepan Man 04-28-2003 05:14 PM

Hehe, my was not in vain.

This is a straightforward (albeit tricksy) Words in words. There is a ME-related word somewhere in there.

Nuranar 04-28-2003 09:05 PM

If it's (beach, sea) I shall claim a foul.

The Saucepan Man 04-29-2003 08:10 PM

No, but you're on the right track.

Silmarien 04-30-2003 09:39 PM

Is it Faery?

This is a total guess so if it's right could you explain how. If not could we have another clue. Pleeeeeeeease!
*puts on best wheedling face and voice*

The Saucepan Man 05-01-2003 08:40 PM

Nope.

A clue, eh? Well, you are looking for a word in a word.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-01-2003 09:52 PM

is it perhaps 'arvellin'? I found a reference to "Arvalin", perhaps the other is an alternate spelling? *looking doubtful*

Sophia

Nuranar 05-05-2003 06:56 PM

In between devouring Calculus II like a mad thing, all I've managed to find is "ai" in "train." Is this what you had in mind, O fellow Downie-Awardee?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-05-2003 08:35 PM

Drat you, Saucepan Man!!! You deserve that award, methinks. It's 'este' in Yesterday.

Estë, the wife of Lorien?

In Yesterday.

DRAT! The lady of precipitation has beaten me to it.

The Saucepan Man 05-06-2003 06:44 AM

Nope, it's not Este (truth be told, I didn't see that one), but you've got the right host word.

Annunfuiniel 05-06-2003 07:17 AM

I can't get any other word than Este straight out of 'Yesterday'...
If playing with letters is allowed then I'd say Yestarë, the first day of the year in Elves' calendar.

The Saucepan Man 05-06-2003 06:34 PM

OK OK, here's a hint: It's the end of the weekend for Hobbits.
