Sorry it took so long, had a rough week.

And anyways these thoughts are nothing but a delusion,... He'd see me and ram me, before I could even scream. He see me, and fairly fast, if I donned the Ring on now, even in Mordor.
Don't know if this is any good. It's my first try at this.

HerenIstarion 10-01-2002 11:19 AM

that must be Sam entering Mordor

Joy 10-01-2002 02:55 PM

Very good HI.

HerenIstarion 10-07-2002 01:31 AM

same apology here

next one:

Quote:

It could not get very far, let us poke in the ferns over there. We’ll get him like a rabbit and then will see what a kind of bird it is

burrahobbit 10-11-2002 02:29 PM

Rangers in Ithilien, about Gollum.

HerenIstarion 10-12-2002 12:46 AM

aye, welcome to your domain, burra

you are right, take it up

burrahobbit 10-12-2002 02:01 AM

Yes, doubly mine.

Childlike Empress 10-12-2002 01:03 PM

Gollum?

burrahobbit 10-15-2002 08:55 AM

Yess Gollum. Where?

Childlike Empress 10-16-2002 01:03 AM

Soon after he joined up with Frodo and Sam? Looking, I've found at least half a dozen likely passages.

Perhaps,
Quote:

"Yes, yes, and Sam stinks!" answered Gollum. "Poor Smeagol smells it, but good Smeagol bears it. Helps nice master. But that's no matter. The air's moving, change is coming. Smeagol wonders; he's not happy."
But probably not. It sounds like he's muttering unpleasantries about Sam and/or Frodo. How close am I on a scale of cold to hot?

burra?

HerenIstarion 11-13-2002 12:19 AM

burrahobbit 11-13-2002 12:35 AM

OH! Send me a PM next time I seem to forget. Heren got it.

HerenIstarion 11-13-2002 01:00 AM

well, all right

next (easy) one:

Quote:

But it darkness seems more weighing, to think about everything the lamps.

Gwaihir the Windlord 11-13-2002 03:47 AM

Hmmm... in this game, you kind of have to have either a)read the books recently or b)have a good memory, neither of which applies to me at this moment. But carry on please, I'll join you soon.

HerenIstarion 11-13-2002 06:10 AM

Welcome to the realm of nas-s-sty mistrans-s-slators-s-s, Windlord

gralin musicteeth 11-13-2002 06:57 PM

*kick myself for joining in on the 6TH PAGE!* I'm a bit confuzzled. if someone would like to spare the time to explain why this is not making any sense to me, or direct me to somewhere else where i may obtain this information, i would be very much obliged. or you could flatly refuse and kick me in the teeth. either way, i will have learned a lesson.

Lostgaeriel 11-14-2002 12:56 AM

Hi gralin musicteeth!

I assume that you mean that you don't know how to play this mistranslated quotes game. And since there are probably others also in the dark, I hope I can illuminate.

An exact quote from one of the books is entered into an online translation engine such as
Babel Fish or InterTran once or a number of times to scramble it. (Such as English to French to Spanish to Mandarin to English again.) Then it is posted.

How to unscramble it is your own lookout!

Lostgaeriel 11-14-2002 01:12 AM

Of course, now that I've had a chance to think about this one for a few minutes, I think I know what it is. If my friend HerenIstarion hadn't said it was easy, I would never have come up with it. (From my experience that usually means it's from tLotR.)

Anyway -
Quote:

But it darkness seems more weighing, to think about everything the lamps.
is Sam in Moria responding to Gimli singing the Song of Durin
Quote:

But it makes the darkness seem heavier, thinking of all those lamps.

HerenIstarion 11-14-2002 01:53 AM

I find it more amusing to translate it myself. In this case I'm able to convert idioms to corresponding expressions and than it bocomes even funnier when gets back to English

But I must confess last one has undergone FreeTranslation.com treatement

BTW, we still can kick you in the teeth, gralin, but just for the sake of heavenly melody which, I expect, will flow out of your mouth after this

HerenIstarion 11-14-2002 02:17 AM

and yes, Lostgaeriel gets it

Lostgaeriel 11-14-2002 08:34 PM

Why, oh why do I try to solve these? I hate generating new mistranslations! Never again!

Quote:

The remainder there under an in brief during of the doubt, that we should use.

HerenIstarion 11-15-2002 01:13 AM

That sounds like Gandalf about Sauron in the last debate of Captains of the West.

Lostgaeriel 11-15-2002 11:51 AM

No-o, it's not from The Last Debate, although it is from a similar conversation.

HerenIstarion 11-18-2002 02:42 AM

alrighty than, that's Gandalf to Aragorn just after Pippin's 'fool-of-a-tookish' stealing of the Palantir:

Quote:

There remains a short while of doubt which we must use

Lostgaeriel 11-18-2002 07:33 PM

Yes, although I believe that Gandalf was also speaking to Théoden and Éomer as well as Aragorn.

Go!

HerenIstarion 11-19-2002 01:18 AM

thanks

next round:

Quote:

I take am goods it at to received always simpler than below in upper part. This how do not fly can, can jump!

Lostgaeriel 12-10-2002 10:43 AM

Thanks for the hint, HerenIstarion.

That was Sam to Frodo as they look for a way down from the outer ridge of the Emyn Muil.

Quote:

Sam knelt beside him and peered reluctantly over the edge. Then he glanced up at the great cliff rising up, away on their left. 'Easier! he grunted. 'Well, I suppose it's always easier getting down than up. Those as can't fly can jump!'

HerenIstarion 12-11-2002 01:21 AM

yes, Lostgaeriel, that's the thing proceed

Lostgaeriel 12-12-2002 11:51 AM

Quote:

Eh on the level? Possess shall you district me shore up? Desire you admit I no peace all in all in the night or day?

burrahobbit 12-27-2002 02:55 AM

Hint?

HerenIstarion 12-27-2002 03:49 AM

Saruman to Gandalf and Co at Orthank:

Quote:

'Why must you disturb my rest? Will you give me no peace at all by night or day?'
um?

Lostgaeriel 01-02-2003 05:35 PM

Yes, that's it, HerenIstarion. Go!

My mistranslation includes the 'Well?' at the beginning of his grousing.

HerenIstarion 01-20-2003 04:30 AM

Excuse me for a delay. I'm being nusy of late, alas. Anyways, here it comes the next mistranslation:

Quote:

Death you can give gained or unmerited; but not the titles which I will take of you of lowly, neither spy, nor servant

burrahobbit 01-21-2003 12:26 AM

Quote:

Then Beren answered: 'Death you can give me earned or unearned; but the names I will not take from you of baseborn, nor spy, nor thrall. By the ring of Felagund, that he gave to Barahir my father on the battle field of the North, my house has not earned such names from any Elf, be he king or no.'

HerenIstarion 01-29-2003 12:11 AM

yup

burrahobbit 02-01-2003 02:53 AM

Quote:

"That which is you?'"

"Wandering thrall, the proof went ahead of eleven, met and troestete."
english-german-french-english

burrahobbit 03-07-2003 07:44 PM

It's from the Sil.

HerenIstarion 03-31-2003 12:32 PM
